"Glad He’s Not On My Team"

10 Darrin (-3) – Let’s just say I’ve seen the other goalies for the Haverhill cup…..and Darrin should’ve been first overall.

9 Billy T – That pass. Never to be repeated.

8 Ron (-3) – In all seriousness though, Ron is a great passer.

7 Griff – I hope he’s good at moving players in front of the net. Gonna be tough with a bad toe.

6 Mike W – Made up for the absence of Ron. Almost a “Ron-like” debut on the rankings. Meteoric you might say. But could you imagine how many goals Ron would’ve had tonight?

5 Johnny (-2) – This is one of those games you just throw the tape away. He made his one face-off win really count for something.

4 Nick (+2) – Decent game. Hitting the net with consistency this year. His game has found a new level.

3 Borges (+1) – Kinda gave up towards the end of the night. I wish I knew what it felt like to score whenever you want to.

2 Brett (-1) - Assists

1 Jared (+1) – Goals > Assist = 1st. Simple math. Unfortunately Jared is terrible at math.

Honorable Mention: Mike D

Off the Rankings: Brendon, Joe, Eric

Newcomers: Billy T, Griff, Mike W

Haverhill Cup

Re-Draft

On the day Billy “the lesser Driscoll” dropped out of the tournament, the GMs of each team scrambled to put their heads together and re-draft the same day. Filling the void on the roster left by Billy D was Scott Finalyson. Orders were re-picked randomly by Ashley Borges and it went like this.

Jared

Johnny

Brett

Borges

And with the first pick in the draft Jared picked Scotty F. And so here are the teams for the 2013 Haverhill Cup……(until Scotty drops out too)

Jared – Scott – Mike W – Brian – Bobby

John – Eric – Billy T – Elliot – Jack

Brett – Ron – Griff – Andrew – Tony

Borges – Nick – Mike D – Brendon – Darrin

Game Time?

18 comments:
Ok Boys, with Sunday being a holiday the window to play hockey is very small.

The only opening we could get is Friday night from 6-8pm.

I know its tight for some because of work but we need a number so we can book the rink. Lets do this!

In: Nick, Johnny, JB, Griff, Jared. MVW, Billy T, Frendon, Brett,

Enjoy this rare treat from the desk of PPP
Another week of Saugus hockey in the books and after a quick review of the tape, it looks like everyone had a good time. Looking over the rosters it looked like JB picked the winning team even before the ball dropped. After it was all said and done JB's team won the first 3 games, each of them decided by a goal or two. There was a 4th game that went for 20 minutes, and team Johnny saved face, winning the finale 2-0.

The middle game was the closest of the night, needing overtime to decide the victor. There was some contentious moments, in overtime, when Johnny kept digging for the ball, eventually getting it to cross the line. However, since Johnny was the only one celebrating, it went to the replay booth. The goal was disallowed as Bobby had it covered up for a couple seconds before Johnny dug it out.

There were a couple high sticks thrown around tonight. JB was working Billy over for position and JB's stick caught Billy in the head. Fortunately, Billy was only hit in the face and not in any sensitive areas. Billy shook it off and played through it. Way to go Billy. Then, during the very next shift there seemed to be some retaliation when Brett took on JB for possession of the ball. Brett's stick deflected off JB for another high stick to JB's upper body. However, after the play was over it became clear that it was not retaliation and completely unintentional.

The 1st star of the game was Jared. He had a workmen like night and that's all it takes for him to shine brightly in Saugus. However, he's the #1 star for scoring the overtime winner in game 2. Nice shot Jared, off the post too gets you bonus points.

The 2nd star was Ron, the old dog is proving to still have a few tricks up the sleeve. Did he have a bone to settle with being labelled as a "can't pass player" by WPR last week? Maybe, but either way it's going to be interesting to see just what WPR has to say in his report this week. I'm sure he'll have a surprise in store for us.

The 3rd star is JB. His steady hand on D kept his team confident. When he transitioned to play power forward, he made great plays in the passing game as well as being able to bury the shot when his team needed it. Whether on D or playing forward, JB is always a threat to make a deciding play.

The white team had two players worth mentioning. Johnny played a solid game, scoring goals and hustling for loose balls. Johnny kept playing hard, fighting to keep his team in contention all night. He effectively used an extra curricular wrestling move after a play stopped hoping to fire up his team. Kudos to Johnny, you get the the 4th star, but unfortunately you don't get to come out and wave to the crowd.

Jacque also was a bright spot for Johnny's team. He showed off a terrific wrist shot that found the back of the net. Despite fading a little towards the end of the night, he was able to move pretty quickly with the ball showing some good stick handling ability. Jacque takes the 5th star.

But where oh where was Brett and Eric tonight? Eric scored some goals, and Brett might of had 1 or two, but for this dynamic duo much more was expected. They failed to deliver the goods tonight. Was it just an off night? Perhaps, but you have to wonder if the Brett and Eric team are still the odds on favorites to win the Haverhill cup on April 6. After tonight's performance, the odd's makers in Vegas are probably going to rethink the numbers. There's no doubt the other team captains took notes tonight.

BREAKING NEWS!

28 comments:
Big Board has just learned that there has been a major trade accepted for the upcoming Haverhill Cup.

General Managers Jared and Johnny were back and forth all day tweaking the trade and it has just been finalized.

Jared has traded Billy Driscoll, Mike Demaio, and Hunky Tony to Johnny for Darrin Driscoll, Ryan Griffin, and Andrew Mcteenager.

Big Board was the first to report this news.

The Insider's Game Report

13 comments:
Sorry that I can't bring myself to post my Insider's Report as a comment of WPR's thread.

WPR's rankings clearly play favorites. Last night's #1 player was Johnny without a doubt. If he had 7 goals it looked like he scored them on 9 or 10 shots. He's the undisputed scoring champ in Saugus and easily overshadowed Brett's night. I don't know exactly how Johnny does it, but he's deadly when he's in the slot with the ball. Nice job Johnny.

WPR used that final goal as the reason to put Brett number one. The player that should of got credit for that play was Ron. It was a perfect pass- tape to tape. But I was very disappointed that Ron didn't look before he made that play. However, all night Ron worked hard on the boards against the iron of Team Johnny, so I think fatigue was a contributing factor on that ill-advised play. I will say on that goal, Brett gets extra points for scoring a pretty nice game winner.

In looking at the evening as a whole, it was obvious the Borges, Jared & Ron line had their way against the Johnny, Brett and whatever player you put opposite Ron line. There was one stretch where team Borges dominated so much Borges was heard saying, "this isn't fair to the other team, I have to break up our line" and proceeded to put Jared on another line for a good stretch of the night. That was a noble gesture on Borges part and the 2nd line appreciated it, but that is only half the story... read on.

What was even more laughable was when the combination of Brett and Johnny kept taking extra long shifts so that they could get their + - back to respectable. It worked, they scored most of their goals against the second line (or should I say 3rd/4th line players). Their embarrassing strategy didn't go unnoticed. Players on Team Borges asked the captain to counter, doing the same thing to them, however Borges made a firm stand and said, "no we are not sinking to that level, let the kids learn from this and understand this is not how we roll". The young ones jaws all dropped in amazement at Borges wise words. Both Jarad and Ron nodded with approval, then turned back to the game with their heads held high.

Note: The missed icing calls are tough ones, especially when the ensuing play is a quick goal. I think the easy solution is this. If a team ices the puck 3 times in any game, that 3rd time is a penalty shot. This way, every icing call will be contested because your only allowed 2 of them before penalty shots are awarded.

Shameful

10 Billy T – Flashes of Borges with the long passes over everyone. Too bad Brett couldn’t finish like Jared can. Billy sobered up by game 2 and got it together.

9 Ward (-2) – Seems to want to just get one incredible goal per week. No penalty for excessive celebration. Well deserved.

8 Nick (+1) – A tall order for Nick tonight trying to contain a line of Ron, Borges and Jared. But he did quite well and kept his chin up even when Billy forgot how to play D in game one. Nick didn’t even think about blaming Billy T for his poor plus/minus rating.

7 Elliot (+1) – A solid second-liner with a nose for the net. Needs to be faster when he has the ball though.

6 Brendon (E) – Played hard all night and even took a wicked cross-check to the midsection from Jared that he moaned about for oh I don’t know a good 20 seconds. But in good ol’ Brendon fashion was ready to keep playing until he was called off for embarrassing himself and the team.

5 Borges (-1) – Underwhelming performance from JB. Had some very good back-checks to prevent some goals. I think he seems to score more than he does because he celebrates so much after every goal.

4 Darrin (-1) – “On call” my butt.

3 Johnny (+1) – Lit up Bobby with 7 goals. After tonight, both Borges and Brett should be worried about their net minders for the upcoming hockey get-together.

2 Jared (-1) – Incessant complaining and over the top angry sarcasm really wore on both teams. Way to overreact to every little thing that happens that you don’t like. Shameful isn’t what you and Borges claim to be monster shifts from Brett and Johnny. Shameful is the unnecessary bickering and the inability to let things go. Of course Jared probably had a hidden agenda for all his whining, it remains to be seen if it worked though. We’ll find out next week (if it worked it could skyrocket him back to first automatically). But for now all he did was act like a baby whose team never does anything wrong and cost himself the #1 spot.

1 Brett (+1) – Maybe he didn’t score as much as he should have with all those chances but he sure scored the biggest and timeliest goal of the night (unlike someone else who couldn’t beat the buzzer). And mostly got this spot just to spite Cry Baby Jared. Yes, I know that used to be Brett’s nickname.

Honorable Mention: Joe – Was the best defenseman for the White team and while he didn’t turn any heads with his play, he did a lot of the small things well.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

10 Mike D (-2) – Attempted to play but ended up getting sick so it’s hard to rank him. Is it a coincidence that the only game he played in, his team got blown out? Let’s just say I don’t believe in coincidences.

9 Nick – Yay Nick!!! Those three goals were a thing of beauty.

8 Elliot (+2) – Great chemistry with his brother. Those two together was a huge advantage for the dark team all night. They were able to abuse the newer players.

7 Mike W (E) – Florida-like game. Endured a wicked slash from Elliot.

6 Brendon (E) – Actually had a respectful game. Brendon seems to have mastered that flip-and –go move and used it on Borges liberally.

5 Borges (-1) – Lucky to be in the top five seeing as he lost two of three games, but he gets this spot due to his ability to make the same play over and over and over and still remain unpredictable.

4 Johnny (+1) – Got some points this week; may have even taken over the points lead. But yet again it’s nothing great because all he did was take advantage of people who’ve never played before so again I’m not impressed.

3 Darrin (-1) – Yes he gave up a ton of goals on the night, but I really think any other goalie would’ve given up triple the amount he did. The defense was just flat out urine- poor in front of him. He still made some fantastic meaningless saves.

2 Brett (+1) – Great game from Brett. He was able to battle through the tough defense of the White team all night and earned every point he got. He went back to threading the needle and Johnny and Brendon benefitted. What an effort from him tonight.

1 Jared (E) – Wasn’t looking good for Jared through two games, but he salvaged the night in game three.

Honorable Mention: Jack - If you forget about game three, he had a nice night for himself.
