 Haverhill Cup 2022

The Curse Is No More

20 Brendon – He set up the other teams for goals more than his own team. And his inability to get a slap-shot off the ground was a real problem all day

19 Chris – Wasn’t expecting much from him yet he still under delivered.

18 Teddy – He potted a very important goal in the playoffs, but his refusal to put 2 hands on his stick was infuriating.

17 Mike Meadows – He mistakenly thought he should let the young guns run around all day and underestimated his value as a leader on and off the ice. His total ice time for the day was around 3 minutes.

16 Adam – The earlier games for him were concerning, like when he let a slow roller from 100 feet away go in 5 hole (granted Brendon swung and missed at the ball as well) but when the playoffs arrived he started getting in the way a little bit more.

15 Reggie - Had the funniest play I’ve ever seen in a HC game.

14 Bobcat – His highest value was in his ability to trick the other captains into thinking Billy Driscoll didn’t know how to play hockey anymore.

13 Jamie – For a goalie that didn’t move side to side a whole lot, his save percentage was pretty high. He also recorded a pancake block on Griff and wouldn’t get off him.

12 Elliot - I asked Hannah Borges today what she thought of Elliot’s game. She said “he played like trash, like absolute trash”. I don’t necessarily disagree.

11 Andrew – He was threatening at some points during the day and then at other points he was a piece of cake to play against. Too inconsistent.

10 Johnny – I like Johnny better with a beard. But with a beard comes uncontrollable emotions.

9 Griff – Every year its: “there’s no way Griff makes it till the end of the day”. And every year Griff is in the finals, blocking 1000 shots, scoring goals and wanting to shatter his own stick into a million pieces.

8 Ward – Almost locked up the MVP in the first game of the day, but couldn’t lead his (Mike meadows) team (2nd rated team) past the first round.

7 Jared – You can’t question his will to win, from trying to get punched in the face just for a penalty shot to trying to break the refs will to live, but alas, his prolific scoring touch wasn’t even close to enough to advance in the playoffs.

6 Dave – Dave finally had a team in front of him he could have confidence in. Sure, he had a shaky game 1 vs Brendon’s team, but he was nails in the shootouts and played the rest of the playoffs mistake free. With his most important contribution coming off the ice when he scolded Johnny for #waterbottleweapon incident. He was a big part of his team taking home the cup

5 Borges – In each round, game 1 loss to Brendon’s team in round 1, and on the brink of being embarrassingly swept in the finals, just 1 save away from infamy. Yet Borges scratched and clawed and never said it’s over….until it was over, and he had tasted that sweet sweet nectar of victory.

4 Nick – A force. The sheer will and determination of nick infused the rest of the team and fueled them to give it everything they had. And while they did come up just short, they can walk away from this year’s cup with their heads held high knowing they left nothing in the tank

3 Brett – He may have made 500 saves on the day and some were spectacular. But he’ll always want that one he didn’t get in the shootout.

2 Billy T – For years, Borges had been searching for the right person to come along and break the Borges curse. At first, he may have thought it would be the prater boys….X. Then he thought maybe it would be Jared, a 4 time winner who would carry him to glory….X. It took a red headed defenseman (not named nick) to lead him to the promised land. Billy’s solid play throughout the day and his unlikely heroics in the finals shootout, and game winner in game 3, saved the team on the brink of elimination. Billy had been there once before, and now he’s back again as HC champion.

1 Billy D – $14. $14 F*#!ing dollars.(his actual price was anywhere from 12-19 dollars) The other captains should be ashamed. Yes, Billy slowed down as the day wore on. Yes, the only time he exerted effort was when he was shoving Johnny into the net. Yes, he chicken winged nicks stick and drew a penalty call from a ref that showed up 18 beers deep after a round of morning golf. Yes, his mustache is impressive. But Billy did things on the court last weekend that only he has the ability to do and he went for $14 dollars simply because the last time you saw him play street hockey he was on rollerblades. Now don’t think he’s only 1st this year due to his low dollar figure. Billy had to battle through adversity, like having Bobcat tell him he was going to bench him in the finals if you didn’t start trying harder. (verified unnamed source) That could screw with anyone’s self-confidence. Billy either harnessed the stern counsel or just completely ignored it on his way to scoring  one of the prettier goals of the tournament in game 3 of the finals. I’m sure Liz is ecstatic about having another trophy on the mantle. Congratulations to you, Bobcat, Billy Thomas, Borges and Dave on truly earning the title of 2022 Haverhill Cup Champions
