I don't know if you can just "work" on assists or "work" on game winners. Sure, those thing are the product of good hockey fundamentals but if you are a player on offense, you should consciously focus on improving your skills, and let your points result as an unconscious product of a good application of those skills.

Practice shooting the puck into the net.
Practice puckhandling.
Practice plays.
