Hockey this week is Sunday @ 6:00 - Indoor rink‏

Hi guys,

Evenly matched teams this week made for some competitive games. This coming weekend we’re playing on Sunday @ 6:00 on the indoor rink. Let me know who is going to be there.

Big Board isn't big on personal opinions on posts, however, it agrees with Mike's opinion on when goalie ties it up have the offensive team have ball.

you should not be rewarded for tying up the ball when the offensive team is applying too much pressure. Plus this will create more incentive for the forcheckers.

Let's make this hapn' capn'!!!

I agree with Big Board. I'm probably the biggest offender on this, since there's no negative impact for doing it. Faceoffs in-zone are something we deal with in tournaments, why not start playing that way?

Brett said...

i know billy was quite upset every time it happened.

it slows the game down alot.

thn again maybe they should dump it into the corner instead of infront of the goalie

Re: Goalie tie-ups

I've been wondering that for years. And sorry, Dave, but you were covering up those balls WAY too far out! That change would be awesome!

Anonymous said...

i say 7'8" of room for the player taking it out.

This gives them enough room to make a play, or get it high enough to hit the person trying to block the shot in the family jewels.

Mike D said...

if we aren't going to do face offs then I'd say no closer than 2 feet.

As far as I've ever known, there is no limit within the defensive zone for the goalie to tie up the ball, except for behind the net (the goalie is supposed to have at least one foot over the goalline), or in the corner.

With that being said, I agree that there should be a "punishment" for that to happen. My vote would be a faceoff--we have them in tournaments, why not have them here? They add an amount of pressure to the goalie and the defense, and there's little arguing about that, as opposed to when the other team takes the ball in zone, it's more confusing for the defense as to whether to give them a free shot or whatnot.

It may slow down the game for the goalie to tie up the ball, but if I have a choice between facing a breakaway and slowing the game, I will tie it up every time. I'm not going to give the other team the chance for an easy goal if I can stop it, and I don't pass the ball well. If I can get to the ball before anybody else, why shouldn't I? I agree there should be a downside to it, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't happen.

I stand corrected. I poked around online and found a little info on goalies tying up the ball:

1) The goalie exclusion area is a rectangle defined by the face off dots and the goal line.

2) You can always cover (if in the zone) when under even token pressure.

3) You are OK only as long as some part of your body or equipment is within the goalie exclusion zone.

So to go past the 'goalie exclusion zone', essentially to completely go past the faceoff dots, is against the rules. What you do with that information is up to you.

I have no problem with the goalie coming out and covering the ball, but there should be a face-off or ball in zone.

Leader of the Pack

1) Dave - He made more key saves than I could count and doing this gave dark team the chance to fight from behind in 2 of the games. Outstanding performance.

2) Reggie - He made 2 headsup plays (steals)in his attacking zone that lead directly to 2 key goals. His gray shirt had nothing to do with the lazy passes that were attempted by the white team.

3) Jared / Derek / Mike - As a whole they were the most dominant offensive line the white team had and even though they weren't able to produce wins they gave the dark team & Dave a hard time.

4) John R - He played well, but I've seen better.

5) Brett / Billy - Brett displayed his usually execellent stick handling again this week. I'm putting Billy here as well for the sole reason that he had on roller blades.

6) Mike W - Once again was very aggressive on defense and helped keep the white team some what in it.

7) Nick / Griff - Both played very aggressive defense and were able to hound the white team into submission several times.

Honorable mention - Daves posts - I seemed liked every other time Mike D took a shot i heard - PING -Dave I hope you thanked them after the game..

If someone seems to be open more times than not is it because opposing team isn't worried about them or is it because that player is smart enough to know how to move and get open with out the puck???
Just something to think about.

We could do faceoffs, but we don't do faceoffs in other situations (like when the ball goes out of the zone). In that case the team in the offensive zone should take the ball out at the point. If everyone wants a faceoff instead we could do that, but I would say just have the offensive team take it out if the other team ties it up or if a shot goes off of the goalie out of the rink.

I got really lucky those games. Not even just the posts--numerous shots through screens just happened to hit me. Call it positioning, I call it luck.

Mike D said...

I'm fine with taking it at the top of the zone.

Mike D said...

face offs after goals might make it easier to make sure the goals are accurately written down as well.

It might help if it was on a clip board too.

I'll be honest in saying I was on the white team and I didn't even know that our bench was the one with the stat sheet..

John, I'm in for this week. Can I meet at your house? is so what time?

Anonymous said...

6:00 is just so much better.

Anonymous said...

I agree with Mike on faceoffs after goals. All too often the team that scored is still celebrating and the other team just passes it out to get a break into the zone. Seems a cheap way of getting into the other zone.

Mike D said...

face offs would let us write down stats accurately, let scoring team celebrate, and not give either team the advantage after a goal.

Just as long as we don't have a long pause.

score & go right to center ice for the face off. leave it up to both centers to make sure everyone is ready. if the center takes the face off and someone wasn't ready then to bad.

well said Mike.

again leader of the pack over and under values certain players.

and as far as your last comment, it depends on the person.

JR seems to know where to be, in saugus it works, in tournaments . . . not so much.

If mike was able to capitalize on more of his chances, the dark team would have started to pay more attention to him. But until he made them pay he was going to be open more often then not.

Why can't the team that is opposing JR come up with a game plan to cover him? That's the greater qustion. Or is he open cause other players are drawing two players to themselves, leaving Johnny open? Double team him!! Leave a player(that you believe isn't as dangerous as Johnny) open. Who are you woried about more? A single covered Johnny or an open _____________ (fill in the blank)

Anonymous said...

i think you are giving Johnny WAY to much credit

Anonymous said...

i'm giving the top scorer too much credit?

How is that? he has almost double the goals of the next person. JR 49, Brett 27.

How is that over estimating.

if johnny isn't responsible for his prodution, who is?

Nick said...

its definitely Nick that should get the credit.hahahaha

I cant wait for Anonymous to respond.

Mike D said...

I personally think I'm just good at finding open area.. ha

As far as capitilizing more - again I'll go with Dave made some really good saves on me.. ha (and the post)

I'm gettin a good laugh of the 2 anonymous posters trying to decide on my level of play and hockey skill..

John said...

If everyone wants to do faceoffs on Sunday, then let me know for sure and we can start that.

As for the debate of leaving Mike open, I can say from my standpoint we weren't leaving him open intentionally. However, he was left open in certain circumstances: if Derek had the puck, I would go after Derek and leave Mike open. To me, you just don't want to give Derek ANY clean opportunities at net. I think that's different then just saying we didn't care to cover Mike. I don't think there's anyone that you can just leave completely open.

John said...

Mike, meet me no later than 5. I'd like everyone to get there early so we can start no later than 6 since the group after us starts at 8.

First 09 post

Anonymous said...

i'm gonna beg to differ on your comment johnny

Lenny D said...

Dave, I totally understand the reasoning for covering it up so far out. I'm not contesting that. It does slow the game down and renders forechecking usually moot. I like that the offense takes it in zone, no face-offs...

Face-offs after goals, ugh - let's just play. It hasn't been an issue before. Besides, is keeping track of stats more important than keeping the flow of the game going?

Anonymous said...

John is righ, but if you look at the stats for the week, Mike D did take advantage of his ops... He had the most goals on the white team.

Anonymous said...

yeah but he could have hed 4 more

Nick said...

I agree with Lenny.

There's a new #1 on the Big Board! Calm down brett, it's not you...

We've also added a new three up/three down draft trend for the upcoming week.

on we go!!!

1. Dave- Back to back weeks of dominate goal-tending. Now we're changing rules to make him not as good.

2. J Riley- Not falling too far, perhaps we'll see another Riley vs. Riley matchup sunday.

3. Brett- Will he ever emerge from Riley's shadow?

4. Jared- Was last week the first time he and Griff squared off and didn't completely ruin hockey for everyone?

5. Griff- Skyrockets up the BB with his very aggressive/violent play.

6. MVW- In NHL 09 he'd have a 95 for speed and a 10 for a shot.

7. Reggie- Punished white teams mistakes all night making sure he'll never slide in a draft again.

8. Mike D- Getting goals and scoring chances while playing solid D. No complaints here.

9. Billy- Started his rehab sunday from a extremely minor knee injury. Will he ever fully recover?

10. Derek(s)- The new Derek has been playing great defense and even throwing some weight around. we can throw the old derek in here too, probably a once a year treat, and hopefully Brett took some notes on how to raise his game.

11. Scott- Still made his presense felt dispite missing a third straight week.

12. Nick- The best Nick's played in quite some time. Still only 14 so there's room for growth.

13. Lenny- Tough week for lenny...

14. Brendon- tougher week for brendon.

15. Steve the goalie- coming off a decent week, look for him to raise his game and challenge dave.

THREE UP

D Rye, Griff, Reggie

THREE DOWN

Brendon, Lenny, MVW

Nick said...

I have been 14 for a while now,huh?

Anonymous said...

won't be able to make it sunday. going out after the assembly, and then hockey in borne. sorry JR. Just hope scott isn't there.

Anonymous said...

why would he hope Scott isnt there? Im dissappointed in you Brett. Dont you know your stats will suffer?

Anonymous said...

no they won't. i'm pretty sure if i don't show they'll stay the same. I'm not worried.

Who's gonna take over second anyway? Jared? yeah right

Stat Guru said...

If steve had a number these two would own it

Johnny Riley - 39 of 49 goals scored off of Steve (80%)

Brett Driscoll - 22 of 27 goals scored off of Steve (81%).

Time to switch up their opposing goalie?

Anonymous said...

I hate the boards in the indoor rink.

Anonymous said...

Steve plays goalie almost every week, of course thats how the percentages work out.

Anonymous said...

Leader of the Pack....

with this absense of Brett and Scottie not showing for 3 weeks who will move up in the draft???

Will someone take a gamble on which Dale is going to show (if he shows at all?)?

Is the original Derek going to show again?

Will Johny take Griff and hope his physical play will stifle Jared?

If Jared takes Dave in net will Johny go for Mike D and hope he quietly has another 4 goal week on Dave?

Will someone take Mike W quickly for his intense D and speed?

We will see come Sunday...

Im the "x" factor
