Lambs to the Slaughter

UPDATE: The Stats are updated-Nick

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...but for the black team, it was mostly the worst of times. What else could you say about the slaughter that was last Sunday Night? Teams were chosen by Brett and Jared, and each side had no complaints...until the end of the first game, which the white team won in a shutout. The black team's captain, Jared, was asked if he wanted a trade, but declined on the basis that he wanted some revenge. And they got some in the second game, scoring two goals...which would also be the last time they scored in any of the four games played that night. After a 5-2 loss, TPJ was asked again if he wanted a trade, but declined yet again. Perhaps they felt as though they were making some progress with their increase in scoring during the second game. Either way, the black team had a chip on their shoulder and wanted to prove they could put up a fight. They couldn't. Not one punch. Not even a sissy slap on the face. With the non-warmed-up-before-the-game John in net, the white team rolled to two more shutouts. OUCH. A bystander overheard Steve the Goalie saying to his team: "Where's the defense? I'm surrounded by white jerseys! No one's on him! Cover the point!" Steve did his best to stop the onslaught, but even on his best night, he could do nothing, as there was no denying the white team for the sheer number of chances they had.

Usually, it isn't all one-sided...but this time it was. It was humiliating, embarassing, and the black team may not live it down until next week. Will they switch it up, or come back for more? Will TPJ use his managerial skills to trade for a first-round pick, or perhaps two second-round picks to be named later? Or will he realize that there is nowhere to go from here but up, and fight his way out of yet another debacle? Will Dale pass the puck when he has a two-on-none breakaway, or will he trip over his own stick? Will JB show up next week to help out his beloved dark team, and if so, will the four cheeseburgers he ate give him indigestion and yet another excuse to use when they lose? All these questions and more will be answered next week for more Sunday Night Game Action....stay tuned!

Here are some thoughts to ponder over: -Newcomer Derek scored as many goals as TPJ, and had more points (through four games) than did Newcomer Brian, Nick, Mike D, Reggie, and Dale COMBINED. -Everyone scored at least one goal each on the white team. -The white team had 19 of 20 possible points, while the black team had 3 of 4 possible points. -Lenny had more goals than anyone on the black team. -Possible new records: 1) 20 goals by one team in one week 2) 3 shutouts in one week 3) 0.5 GAA in one week 4) Highest combination of points between two players in one week: 24 (Brendon & Brett) 5) Highest combination of points between three players in one week: 32 (Brendon, Brett, Cliff) Editor's Note: Some of these are not records; official records will be posted later this week.

Here are some stats to chew on: -John (Goalie) 2 goals allowed through 4 games; 0.5 GAA, 4 wins, 3 shutouts -Brendon 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists), 4 wins, 2 Gamewinners -Brett 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists), 4 wins, 1 Gamewinner -Cliff 8 points (6 goals, 2 assists), 4 wins, 1 Gamewinner -Mike W 4 points (1 goals, 3 assists), 4 wins -Lenny 2 points (2 goals, 0 assists), 4 wins -Derek 1 points (1 goal, 0 assists), 4 wins

-TPJ 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist), 4 losses -Chris 1 point (1 goal), 4 losses -Dale -1 point (should have had an assisted goal on that 2-on-none breakaway! Pass it next time!)

Something tells me that the weekly_power_rankings will, for the first time this year, be made up of 5 players from the same team...but in what order? And will anyone on the black team get an honorable mention? Stay tuned to find out!(Nick deserves an honorable mention)

You forgot to mention the slash across the face I gave Steve to top it all off.

No silver lining for the dark team

5 Cliff - His buddies he brought kept him out of a higher spot, but still he came through when it counted . . . . well he scored the game winner anyway in the last game to finish off the shutout or the shootout, which ever you think best described the last game.

4 JR - a shutout is a shutout and he had 3 shutouts this night. Not tested early on, but still managed to stay focused.

3 Brett - Brett got a little selfish and took way more shots then usual with Johnny being in net, but what ever he seems to do always works as he ended up with 6G and 5A and gained ground in almost every stat there is.

2 Brendan - A sneaky player, that always seems to slip in the draft each week, came up big by dishing the puck and also scoring when asked to and led his team in points.

1 Mike W. - Look up “Shut down defense” and you’ll see a mug shot of this kid. His blazing speed made it impossible for the likes of Jared to make any plays what so ever on offense. He made sure he was worthy of a #1 pick overall.

The mark on his neck looked like an italicized "L". I whacked him pretty good...

Excellent call on Mike W. Watching him from a goalie's perspective he played fantastic last night. He didn't panic when guys where bearing down on him, he was calm with the puck and smoothly transitioned it out of the zone. He also played very physical on Jared all night, limiting his chances.

i think we need to put a stop to this whole "pride" thing of not trading players, blowout after blowout.

there were players there who hadn't played before like derek and brian and Jared got the raw deal on that one.

Steve wasn't as hot as other weeks.

trading players makes it a better game for the goalies (JR with 2 saves and Steve with 100 shots on net per game) and for people who come to play a real game.

Now there are some players who will take the win and the points which ever way they come. And i don't mind getting 11 points a week, but i do want to earn them.

After every game we should analyze the teams and see if we can't make them more even.

I saw what the teams were going to be yesterday and I was really hoping a trade would have been made - something like Cliff for one of their guys who hasn't played much. I don't think the outcome of the games would have changed much as far as who would win, but I think the dark team would have generated a lot more offense.

Brendon, he obviously had a lot of confidence in the Dale acquisition.

at what temperature will we start to play inside?

20 degrees isn't the best conditions to play street hockey in.

Is it because the inside is already taken? If so, why can't we book inside 2 weeks in adance?

Brett,

Hockey is supposed to be played outdoors - that's why we do it!

Actually, the inside rink is always booked from 8-10. Since my meeting doesn't end until 5:45, the earliest we can play would be 6:30 (and even then usually arrive late). That's why we have to play outdoors.

However, starting January our meetings switch to the morning, so we're going to switch to 6:00 - 8:00. The indoor rink is open at that time so we'll be back indoors until it warms up.

Forgot to add, we can't bump the group that plays from 8:00 - 10:00 since they have played there for years and sign a contract ahead of time.

only 2 game in recent history(or even all of history) have been played outdoors in the NHL.

After a little while you warm up, but it's still hard to get the engine running just shooting around for 20 minutes waiting for everyone to get there.

Don't you people get it? Arriving on time means more games, means more stats, means more wins for me

Brett said...

how about, the people that come late(over 10 minutes late) without any notice, who don't call and say they'll be late, don't get to play.

Send them home Johhny

For example Dale came very late, send him home.

Do you think this would stop players from coming late, or just stop them from coming at all?

Mike D said...

no matter what time we start people are going to be late.
So what if we are playing 5 on 4 and someone shows up, we going to send them home?
Also go to remember the financial aspect of it too.
I also think that the fact that we shoot around for an extra long time leads people to thinking it's ok to late.
First thing that would help is if the goalie started getting suited up as soon as they got there even if that means getting suited up outside of the rink.
Ever notice when we have groups after us they basically walk in 90% ready to go so this might help because that would lead to less time just shooting around.
As far as everyone else goes you know how long it takes to get there so just leave on time.
I mean if the guys from Salem who don't get home from their meeting utnil 5 can get there on time most of the time so can everyone else.

I agree with you guys about people showing up late. Not everyone can lumped in the same though. The guys from my hall have a harder time making it by 7 because of the meeting time. I live close to the hall so it's not too bad for me to make it back in time. Obviously stating in January we have no excuse. In Dale's case (in the very rare instance of defending him), I believe he works until 6 or something, so he has a legit reason as well. The other guys that don't show up on time - I can't rationalize for them.

The biggest problem is getting the goalies ready. Once we start playing inside in January, they should be able to get to the rink 15 minutes earlier than we start and suit up. Once the goalies are suited up we can give them 5 minutes of warmups while we pick teams and then start playing. As far as I'm concerned, as soon as both goalies are ready and we have ten players we can start as soon as possible, even if there are a bunch of guys we know will still be coming.
