Recap

Have any of you tried to write a recap without sounding redundant? It’s almost impossible. It’s like trying to pick up a wet watermelon seed off the ground. You need to be skilled to get the job done…

*Of course, the skill level that the white team displayed in game one’s 5-1 defeat wouldn’t have been sufficient enough. “Frankly, it should have been a shutout for Steve”, said one opposing player. It was, apparently, so bad that team “captain” (we use that term loosely around here) Jared wanted to switch up teams. “Good thing no one listened to him, the games were fairly competitive the rest of the night”, said one white team player who was trying to undermine Jared’s authority.

*White team certainly did bounce back in game 2 though. They turned a 5-1 loss in game 1 into a 5-1 victory. “This game was a lot closer than the score indicated, but they did play much better in the second game”, said one casual observer. Game two was filled with fluky goals that took funny bounces or went off a player's foot. "When you make that many shots on net, (or the vacinity of), you are going to get the lucky goals", said one player.

* The return of Brett: After sitting out the first 2 games because of shin splints, Brett decided to help out the bench-less Dark team. "Injury or not he made a difference", said one scout. Brett helped turn the dark team around from game 2 leading them to a 5-3 win. Despite the dynamic speed of Jared and Petzold the white team came up short again. Said one scout: "Considering the bench situation for them, they should have walked all over the dark team by game three."

* So, does anyone know what happens to the stats when a tie occurs? Neither do I. The 4th and final game of the night ended at 8:00 sharp with a 2-2 tie. This game was so short nothing of note happened. But, when the game started we decided first to three wins. The white team was up with a quick 2-0 lead but couldn't finish it off before time was up.

Nick's Ramblings:

Any guesses were the watermelon reference came from? How is the welt, Jared? Is Brad banned for next week? 17 more days! Petzold, hold the stick with two hands and it may not go flying next time. Steelers or Cardinals? That's right, no one cares. Just to let you know: He doesn't care. Two weeks in a row, Lee? Impressive. Leader of the Pack: No one likes what you have to say(still) Stat Guru, I was unimpressed last week. Brad still doesn't look good. Is the word "shutout" one word or two? Joe, keep blocking De Maio's shots. Who looked more hurt: John R or Brett? Lenny, get better. Reggie, we missed your presense. I want Mark in goal!

Brett only gets one win he sat out on us the first game we won.

Anonymous said...

i get the second win for the unfinished game. everyone did

Anonymous said...

no, i think its a mistake. If that was the case, Brett, then I would have 3 wins(game 1,3,4)

With a week off here in winter the BB is gearing up for the mid-season awards. Look for Steve to win many and MVW to be disappointed.

So I finally say to myself, self, let's take a look at all these rediculous stats riley and nick have up there. And under scoring combinations who would've thought brad has 7 career unassisted goals which puts him at 7th most unassisted all time! Cmon stat guru. I demand more from you!

Just to clear it up: the weekly box score comes from a separate query that doesn't accurately calculate if a person doesn't play ALL games. Typically I will manually adjust that after the fact; yesterday I just forgot.

Stat wise Brett only got 1 win for yesterday, and only officially played in 1 game. I marked the unfinished game as unfinished (along with the other unfinished games), so any stats that are calculated based on the number of games (ppg, winning %, etc) should be slightly higher for most people. The exception is the goalies stats (still have to figure that one out).

If the half games don't count as actual games, but the points do count, then i'm just gonna play in all the unfinishable games so my points per game sky rocket.

Anonymous said...

As will I!
Why don't we all just do that?

Anonymous said...

You can, but then your total points will be lagging way behind, and eventually you won't be seen in the ppg leaders since you won't have enough games to qualify.

Plus, that's assuming you'll score in those games!!!

Anonymous said...

It was sarcasm. Everyone couldn't do that else we wouldnt even have games

Anonymous said...

i'm still doing it

Anonymous said...

Yes, I could tell you were being sarcastic - that's the reason I replied as I did. A person would obviously care more about playing hockey then trying to have the highest of a particular stat...well in theory anyway.

Anonymous said...

who is "he"? LOL

Anonymous said...

brett obviously care more about the stats then

Anonymous said...

How about a new poll?

Who is the best candidate for the "lets develop a center" program? Mike W should be on the list, as was stated in previous postings. Who else?

Mike D said...

develop a center.
seriously?!?!
What are we a farm team?

How are we going to "develop" a center?

Anonymous said...

isn't obvious mike?

Anonymous said...

i would vote for jared. Make him play defense after not playing defense for all those years.

Anonymous said...

Here's a challange for you Stat Guru. Find me some stats that make Ryan G look impressive.

Anonymous said...

I agree, and disagree with Brendon to an extent.

The way I view it, a good center has to have the following qualities:

1. Playmaking
2. Transition
3. Defensive ability

Those qualities take a combination of skill, hockey sense, and hard work.

Someone like Mike D has pretty good hockey sense but he's not really a playmaker. Brendon, although a better playmaker, wouldn't be ideal because he really doesn't have the hockey sense for playing center. In that sense, a person might not be a natural centerman.

On the otherhand, when it comes to the defensive aspect of it, it's simply a matter of effort. Playing center is more work since you have to be responsible enough not to turn the ball over, as well as get back and cover defensively. Many guys don't feel like doing that when they play offense.

So to summarize, in some respects being effective at center is a person's skillset, but in others it's just their effort and commitment to winning.

If I had the stamina, I'd play center in a heartbeat. Not saying I'd be great or anything, but I think I'd hold my own...

BB apologizes for the delay, but as promised here are the mid-season awards!!!

Top Forward- J Riley

Another year and the numbers are there for Riley like clockwork. Brett made a small run for this award, but the grind of the season took it's toll on him.

Top Defensemen- Joe

With a required time of 33 percent played on defense, Joe wins with good hustle and the patented sweep check.

Top Goalie- Steve

Dominating the goalie department, rumored to have finished the first half season as the number one overall pick in saugus.

Most Improved- Steve

Has given all former average players hope that they too can become a dominant player. MVW's mid-season scoring slump cost him this award

Comeback Player of the Year- Griff

Left for dead with JB, Griff's resurgence as a forward has surprised even his best supporters.

110% Award- MVW

Had to find an award mike could win. So here it is, he hustles a lot.

Most likely to toot their own horn- Brendon

We've all heard about how he's the greatest backchecker and how he's breaking world records in races. Good Job Brendon!

Most likely to complain about the teams- Jared

Losing a lot this year, starting to think maybe he's the problem and not the teams.

Phantom Injury Award- Brett

No one believes you Brett, nobody.

Finally

The most likely to post first after this post- Nick

Consistantly online and too young to drive, this one definately goes to Nick.

Stayed tuned next week for the real BB

REPORT: BRETT DRISCOL OUT WITH CRACKED TOENAIL. X-RAYS WERE INCONCLUSIVE, HOWEVER STRUCTUAL DAMAGE IS CLEARLY VISIBLE...UP CLOSE.

Anonymous said...

"Consistantly online and too young to drive, this one definately goes to Nick."

Well Im still 14, right? :)

Yes i am online way too much.

Anonymous said...

Nick, you missed proving BB right by 10 minutes!

Does the Left Bench get nominated for biggest disappointment? It's not even showing up on the rankings anymore!

Anonymous said...

what about brett at center. he's a play maker and has speed and endurance, he never subs. When he's playing that is.

what about brett doesn't work for center? Besids maybe the fact he doesn't want to play it

Anonymous said...

who is to say, i waited for someone else to post before i did? :)

Anonymous said...

brendon makes the largest comments.

Anonymous said...

a small run? before last week i was only behind by 1 point.

i call that a strong push.

Stat Guru said...

why do i have to make Griff look impresive?

He's good and goes top one or two picks every week. 6th place all time top scorer.

That's a dumb challenge!!! not even going to bother looking for a more interesting stat.

My purpose isn't to make someone look "impressive". i'm just trying to make you realize someones hidden tallents or maybet even their hidden faults.

Anonymous said...

Stat Guru you just showed how terrrible you really are.

You can pick Brad as the top one or two picks every week for all i care but that doesn't mean hes good. It just means that you can't pick players well. Griff being in the top picks doesnt make him great either. If hes so great, why cant you find at least one impressive stat to his name? Because there are none.

You said hes 6th place all time in scoring. But he's really 6th place in points, not scoring: 64 points in 64 games. Everyone above him and many people below him on that list averaged more than 1 point per game. Cliff is below him and so is billy. They are both better than him, but they have only played about half as many games as him. Some impressive stat!

Face it: there are no impressive stats for Griff. Only mediocre ones. You failed Stat Guru. You failed.

Anonymous said...

scoring involves goals and assists. How do you not know that? seriously

Anonymous said...

sounds like someone is jealous

Anonymous said...

So if someone has 50 assists but no goals and 50 points is tops, they are a scoring king? Ha! You need goals to be a scoring leader not assists. your pathetic.

Anonymous said...

Stat Guru I demand an amswer from you!

Anonymous said...

no you don't. go on nhl.com and they have a list of the SCORING LEADERS. it's goals and assists.

it's called the art ross trophy

Anonymous said...

the rocket richard trophy is for the top goal scorer

Anonymous said...

cliff is no longer gonna play with us. and neither is billy, he's having surgery soon. that leaves griff.

he player D for a while too. i think that contributes to his low career point total. This year he's averaging 1.5 points a game. About the same as cliff and brendan, and way better than billy this year.

Anonymous said...

Stat Guru I am still waiting despite this pathetic attempt to make it look like I dont have a point here. Split hairs why don't you? My point remains! Well, Mr Guru?

Anonymous said...

Mr Anonyomous, are you the Stat Guru? Why are you speaking for him?

Anonymous said...

And everyone plays D, even JR. That doesn't matter.

Anonymous said...

not on a regular basis.

Anonymous said...

your point can remain, but it won't be taken seriously

Anonymous said...

No you wont be taken seriously. Your alone on your opinion. And Im still waiting for the Stat Guru to answer me.

Anonymous said...

Don't know if there are actually two people talking under anonymous names or this is just one of jared's arguments with himself.

But I checked into it and the first anonymous poster is correct. Almost everyone who plays offense regularly and whom we all agree is a good player has some decent stats to their name in at least one category, except Griff. He's middle of the road in his best categories. And he hasnt played Defence regularly for a long time because hes an offencemen now.

The only reason hes sixth in scoring is because of the number of games he has been in. Theres no doubt that Cliff or Billy would have surpassed him if they played as many games. In addition to that, Eric F, Mike P, Scott F, and Ron L who all play limited number of games put up better averages and I think we all agree they are better. So he should really be like 10th place on the scoring list if everyone played as many games.

So these two can argue like children back and forth, but the fact is that Griff isn't that good on paper. So why does he get picked near the top every week? Does everyone think hes actually much better than he really is? Maybe we should have a new poll: most overrated player!

How come the black team should have had a shut out if white scored 1st? DUH!
