*It is going to be very tough to biased this week, huh Lenny? Ouch! This was pathetic. It certainly was a feeble effort by the white team in game one. "To many players can lead to sloppy, unorganized play" said one white team player. It was our first 5-0 game since January 4th. One scout said, "It didn't help that Petzold was playing with a torn up hand and knee, but the offense got nothing going...it again testifies that in order to be successful the game needs to played by 5 players working together." Of course it doesn't help when you have over two lines on each time for the second week in a row. "One of these weeks we are going to have a 4 on 4 game as a result" said one cynical scout. Not helping the White team's anemic offense was the fact that Mike Ward played stellar defense."MVW deserves a spot on the WPR this week, definitely!" said one commenter, though the commenter may be Mike Ward himself. Jared and Brett were integral in the Dark Team's offense.
*Of course, no one is giving Lenny any credit. So, Lenny is all the new free time leading to more practice? "What is that 13 goals in the last four weeks?" said one scout. Lenny was again a dominating force for the dark team. "In my opinion he is the most improved and underrated player in Saugus...everyone thinks Brett and Jared carried the offense last night but Lenny was huge componet of their success" said one goalie. Before dark team's 5-3 victory we heard whispers of the White Team asking for trades. "While Game 2 was closer, it was still a dominating effort by the dark team." said one white team player. Jack played a solid game in net but couldn't over come the short comings of the white team's defense.
*Last Week I felt that John was way too frustrated. I even felt it had "boiled over". Man, was I way off base. What is John's favorite thing to yell yet at teammates? "COME ON GUYS!!" In yet another 5-3 loss in game three, the frustration of loosing his seventh consecutive game, you could see the aggravation in John's eyes. "It was good thing Brett left early [again], or game three may not have been pretty." said one scout. Steve also played another excellent game in net. Mike De Maio likewise played very solid defense along side of Mike Ward. Unnoticed because of his team "terribleness", Matt Davis is showing signs of improvement.
Nick's Ramblings
Any guesses on who uses the term "terribleness"? Who is the scout? The goalie? White team player? Dark team player? Brett, leaving early? I am very disappointed. Hey Chris Young, I need 30 homers from you this year, plus I want you to out-pitch Jake Peavy. Sound good? I want credit on the Weekly Power Rankings and Big Board for this clutch recap. Matt Davis can you snap my stick in half this week so you buy me a new one? Lee, you will be better next week. Jimmy im not as confident. Just kidding Jimmy. Tony the
What is this Quote from?
Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse, wouldn't quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out. Gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.
Any guesses? By the way, 715 words a new record!

i think that was your best recap you have done Nick.

The Minor Players (kind of like the minor prophets, but not really)
5 Mike P - Not necessarily the best mike, but I think he’s the fastest one. He was able to put pressure on the D making some of them make questionable plays that they might have made anyway. He was rewarded with some goals. He was overheard saying “I’m not chasing that” as he went for the line change. Know your place Mike. That’s what you were picked for.
4 Brendon - It wasn’t so much the first and second picks that made the difference. Brendon fought for all the loose balls and played the boards well this week, finding himself in “Gretzky’s office”(that’s for you Jack Edwards) quite often. Brendon’s famous game winner was the crushing blow to the heart of the white team in game 2.
3 Jared - Highly questioned for the players he drafted this week. Jared put all worries to rest by, not only being a juggernaut on offense himself, but his late draft picks delivered as well. I’m going to incorporate the honorable mentions here: Matt S, Mike D, Lenny, Dale(saved a goal), Chris(very solid D) and yes Jim C(who seems to be getting better each week) Hope you don’t mind sharing this spot Jared. You got the best out of them this week.
2 Steve - Is it possible that we are starting to stack the teams to offset Steve? Well, we better start if we’re not. Steve stood up to the likes of Derek D(regarded by many to be the best), Benny(a good Defensemen that hooks a lot) and JR(leading scorer). There’s no way he’d get a shut out. . . . . right? WRONG!! 5-0 in game one. 5-3 in game 2. 5-3 in game 3. But there’s some one who humble Steve might give most of the credit to.
1 Mike W - Mike has found his knitch, and it’s at the red line. Mike cut short all plays into the zone by making the most of his energy this week instead of running in circles. No longer looking for goals, Mike is more content, and comfortable, stopping them from happening. Mike anchored the D and ran the ball out of trouble numerous times and was terrific on the transition.
If you’re wondering why there are so few white players on this weeks rankings it’s because for the second straight week they’ve gone winless, never even coming close to winning even after Brett left. They never dominated the play. Maybe for a shift but they were short lived rushes. I expect more from Derek and John.
Honorable mention for the white team: Jack - no fluke goals this week, just goals he had no chance on.
sorry nick. I only grade weekly performances, not recaps.
Thanks, though I personally didn't think it was my best.
WPR, Just like Brett I'm very disappointed in you.
why is that?
The BB is appalled at the latest poll results. Clearly changes need to be made to the board to satisfy such few fans.
Stay tuned for a record breaking, gut-checking, enhanced 20 man big board full of pros and cons for each player!
I don't know what else I'll have to do to make the WPR. But you asked for it, here's 7 goals next week!
BOOOOO to WPR, BOOOOOOO
How could you give a white player a spot? HOW?!?!
All 5 should have been dark players.
lenny you've made the rankings before.
You may have even been ranked number 1.
you had five goals one week
Brendon, you are wrong...maybe you should google it.
WPR, I would have had Lenny in front of the one handed Mike P.
i see jimmy but where's brian hanson up top winning percentage at 100%? 7-0!
i didn't play the last game!
Please take it off my record so my points per game don't go down.
i left early due to injury
Jared:
The first player in Saugus to reach the 100 plateau in both goals and assists.
poll question:
What is the biggest motivation for winning?
- Losing last weeks games
- Getting more points
- Making JR yell "COME ON"!!!
- You don't like someone on the other team
im not sure that last one should be an option
man, you know when you write something and right when your done you reread it and it sounds great. But then you read it later and it sounds like a 6 year old wrote it?
I must sound like an idiot.
let the players vote whether or not it should be an option
im not sure you see my point.
what, everyone will vote for that one?
"man, you know when you write something and right when your done you reread it and it sounds great. But then you read it later and it sounds like a 6 year old wrote it?
I must sound like an idiot."
Nick, that must happen to you a lot. :)
why are we talking about movies????
Any guesses on who uses the term "terribleness"?
I'm guessing either Joe Buck or Tim McCarver
After this week's recap, I like Nick a little less. Or maybe more. Anyway, I expected more from him. His team's lackluster performance combined with his own inability to give credit where it is due finally "boiled over" to frustration Sunday. Awww, I do like Nick. Sort of. Not really. Maybe. I still like Charleston Chew the same, though. P.S. You're Ok, Nick, in my book. For now. And I wrote this all just to get under his skin.
Joe thought the teams were unfair after all the games were done. In retrospect, perhaps he was right. But if Joe played like Jared or Brett did Sunday, the teams would have been fairly matched, right? Step it up, Joe. You gotta want it! And where's that patented knee slide we've been hearing about? I think it's just an urban legend at this point.
If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.
Johnny is a really really really good hockey player. Not this past Sunday, though. The best of the worst? Maybe. But that's like saying that you can pick your future wife from women ages
90-110 OR you can have Rosie O'Donnell. [shudder]. How old are they again? Haven't made up my mind yet....[shudder again]
Brett could be one of the best players out there, week to week, if he just stayed healthy enough to help his team win. Turns out that they didn't need him to win the last game, but come on, man - bailing on your team after a boo-boo? No Scooby Snacks for you. The black team showed that they really didn't even need you for that third game. How does that make you
look? Like a sack of potatoes. Lumpy, lumpy potatoes.
Jared. Ahhh, Jared. He used to give us so many reasons to make fun of him, but lately he's been sucking the fun out of even that by playing well and keeping his mouth relatively shut. Booooo. Where's the obnoxious, boorish jerk who took dives and cheated at every opportunity? I will say this, though, at first look at the teams, a monkey throwing darts at a list could have made better picks on paper.....on paper. Throw the paper out because his team somehow all came together and gelled at the right times, making him look like a genius....but I ask you, is he really smart, or just lucky? Vegas has the odds at 6:1 lucky over smart.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
A defenseman-converted-winger, Lenny showed us how to hustle to the net Sunday, getting, not one, but two goals on semi-breakaway plays. If we don't watch out, he just might drop 20 lbs and whip us all real good - you'll see.....if not we can just plunk him back on D.
Is Brendon a force to be reckoned with? Maybe. Maybe force is too strong a word. Weak influence, perhaps? Still should be picked about 14th overall in drafts. And what's with giving a white team member your jersey to wear? We're giving you 3 losses as well, just for that. Force them to skin up if they need a white jersey. Not sure how that would work if it was Reggie on the white team, but I digress...
Steve the cat is at the top of his game right now. That means there's nowhere to go from here but down.
Dale. [insert additional generic backhanded compliment here]
Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis.
Mike P claims that Sunday was the first time that he has ever gotten beaten to the puck (in open ice, I am assuming) and it was Mike W that out-hustled him. Learn from the master, my son. Hustle is good, and we don't want you to stop hustling, but hustle + skill + experience beats hustle alone. You could have let him get there first and then chop-blocked him. Ahhh, now you see the wisdom of the experienced ones. Use your speed while you can. Someday you may be 45 lbs overweight eating Yankee Doodles on your sofa watching reruns of Futurama. So what will you have then, huh? Diabetes. That's what.
Onto Mike W, then. If Mike can keep the ball under control, stickhandle effectively and fluently like some of the elite offensive players, his hustle and determination makes him a top 5
goal-scorer. His inability to do that makes him a top 5 defenseman, then. Good job Mike. I like Mike. I also like Grand Funk Railroad.
A newcomer, Mike C, plays like a bat out of heck, but what's with the plastic blade? Who do you think you are, Eri? Mark S (aka Goggles)? Spend the extra bucks and buy a big-boy stick.
To me, boxing is like a ballet, except there's no music, no choreography, and the dancers hit each other.
Chris Y played.... well...he played..... he played his age out there. Not too bad for an "old-timer" - getting old hurts, huh? Rub on the Ben-Gay and suck it up. Sunday night is all about mental toughness as well as physical toughness. We'll bring Hello Kitty band aids if that's what you need to keep going.
Once again, Jack gets the short end of the stick as his team fails to come through for him, despite playing well in net. This brings his GAA to about 4.9.....9.....uhh, probably closer to just
5. Too bad playing great doesn't get you Doritos when you have a guy like Steve playing in the other net who's been playing incredible. Did I say Doritos? I must be hungry or something.
Newcomer (?) Jason/Benny/Whatever came straight from a Catholic Mass to attend our game Sunday night. Fine, but while you're playing with us, try to limit the F-bombs down to a maximum of say...zero. That would be just lovely. Thanks. After all, you're not in church, so show some respect.
Derek knows better than to swear when he's with us. But where was the Derek we all used to know and love? Is he getting too old to be a scoring threat, or was he just playing generously? Playing the set-up man all night didn't help much because there was no one, for the most part, for him to set up. We probably won't see him again for a couple months anyway. He'll be back when his rocking chair is in the shop again.
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.
Matt S. Hmmm. I guess I got nothing against him........yet.
To avoid paying his taxes, Jim C would love to just be able to suit up and play net again. If Jack comes back for a third week, look for Jim to sharpen his stick down to a point and take out the competition. After all, how long can he keep this charade up?
For all intents and purposes, Matt J is a rookie. Plays like one too. Played a rare offensive position as the white team needed plenty of help. Don't worry, Matty. Keep coming back and practicing and soon those wide open shots three feet from the net will go in. Soon you'll be able to play with the big dogs, like a big dog. Until then, however, we'll still have to haze you and force you to eat Kibbles 'n Bits. Yumm.
The fact that I have no specific insult or backhanded compliment to give Bradley doesn't imply that he played well. He just didn't embarrass himself as much as usual.
Apparently, Lee embarrassed himself more than usual. Uhhh, nuff said.
Mike D gets bonus points for taking a Derek-slapshot off the thigh and not missing a beat. Even more points for playing well at center all night. Try to aim for the net, occasionally, on your shots, though. They make us pay for any lights we break.
If you define cowardice as running away at the first sign of danger, screaming and tripping and begging for mercy, then yes, Mr. Brave man, I guess I'm a coward.
I hope I got everybody. If not, just insult yourself for me. Then break one of your legs. Just kidding. You don't have to insult yourself.
P.S. How about this one thousand, four hundred twenty one word post, Nick?
For thoseof us who are tired of playing our hearts out and then having to endure these bogus reviews by the same players tooting the same horns(fixed numbers, ridiculous stat comparisons, etc.) The time has come for a fair and balanced recap.
I announce to you this Blog from someone who knows about hockey for a change. I am THE REAL DEAL!
And now the REAL DEAL'S re-cap:
Sunday night started w/ team black loaded w/ big-guns(Brett,Jared,Demeo,Brenden,Lenny,Chris,Dale,Matt,...someone stop me please!)One would think that they wouldn't even need the hottest goalie this year(STEVE).And the 5-0win was exactly what was expected. (no need to describe the game play of the forementioned. They play good hockey every night.)Meanwhile w/ a poor performance on defence for team white. Nick could not fill the shoes of defencive veteran Joe n. and Lee realized it early. On offence John,Joe & Derekwas the only offence the white team had.Unfortunately these three were never on the floor at the same time. What's up w/ that coach?
Game 2 got a little better w/ team white losing 5-3. BUT, take away the two non-called penalty shots(one when Mike P. was clearly tripped on his way to the net.Not only no call but the black team also took the ball! & Joe going in all alone on Steve was savagely taken down from behind.)A goal that was kicked in on the other end and game 2 could have easily finished 5-4 for team white.
Game 3, despite a quick 2-0 lead for the white team, they're defence, desperately missing Lee & Joe just folded like a lawn chair(commiting rookie mistakes and break downs in fundamentals)and they were suddenly down 3-2.Lenny d. floating in all alone got a couple of goals on Jack. Where was the D? Again Steve stonewalled tghe white teams offence like he did most of the night.Maybe we should go back to throwing the sticks again! Good job by team white but an even better job by team black.
Now my top 5 for hussle & gameplay:
1:Brett - Just a force. We all notice when he is not playing.
2: Jared - Turning out to be the all around player.
3: Steve - Just UBELIEVABLE!
4: Lenny - The poster boy for PROGRESS.
5:Derek - Text book game-play kept his team competitive.
Thank you guys, THE REAL DEAL!
I take back everything that I just said. It was all nonsense and I am just looking for attention because I played terribly last sunday. thank you.
If you actually paid attention when u read u might find that u may learn something!!!
"Nick, that must happen to you a lot. :)"
Good one Lenny. (Does me adding a smiley face make it seem sarcastic?)
Handley, I enjoyed your post but It is more nonsense then jabberwocky, and that's tough to do.
BTW, i know who you are. When you make posts that are that long, its tough to keep your personality out of it.
Poll question:
Who is a bigger loser "The Real deal" or "Leader of the pack"? My guess is they are the same person.
"I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people."
YES!
I don't think LOTP and TRD are the same person.
LOTP disappeared a few weeks ago and coincided with a few people who haven't played since then.. HMMM
You know who I am, Nick? Oh no! My cover is blown! Who am I? Are there more than two of us? Who are you? You'll never know. You can think you know, but you'd be wrong. Or maybe I'm playing to the fact that you will try to figure it out, and so I'll lead you down the wrong path intentionally. HMMM
Also, my Name is Handey. Not Handley. Here is my website:
www.deepthoughtsbyjackhandey.com
i would argue with some of the points that "the real deal" made. like joe in all alone(he filpped the ball past them and tried to run between the D, won't do that again). Or that the white team was stacked(we had depth, and those depth players, or roll players, played very well). But i won't argue because he named me #1 star and WPR didn't even rank me at all.
"Or that the white team was stacked"
i mean or that the dark team was stacked. mixing up my colors
common!!! I've played defense in the 3 times in the last seven YEARS!!! I think I deserve credit a little more than that!
and the quote is from "catch me if you can"
what credit? who said anything about you?
a word of advice Jimmy.
Don't say you deserve anything on this site or people will post anonymously and rip you apart, me being one of them
I think he was refering to my comment in the Recap:
"Lee, you will be better next week. Jimmy im not as confident."
"refering"? Im glad i can spell.
alright alright ladies, the BB decided to seek a second opinion to see if it was being biased. The board received an opinion from a certain star defensemen to give the top 10. The board rounds out the final 10 as promised.
(To be on the board one must have played in the last month and have plans to play in the near future)
on we go!!!
1. Steve- The greatest goalie OF ALL TIME!
2. MVW- If defense wins championships than Mike should atleast be good in saugus.
3. Jared- Never confuse Jared with defense fellow posters, he's a cherry picking winger.
4. Brett- Brett Brett Brett, you know mattyd's little brother is named Brett. You tell me where i'm going with that.
5. Griff- Just being lazy, he'll be back, nice kid
6. Johnny- And I quote from a former saugus legend, "Saugus is an alternate hockey universe where Johnny is King of hockey and we are all peasants."
7. Demeo- One more time Mike on how to spell your last name. Excellent job on center nonetheless.
8. Brendon- You want me to drop a bomb? Next to MVW and Steve, Brendon could be the most improved player this year, BOOM!
9. Joe- I DEMAND A KNEE SLIDE
10. Lenny- Lenny's resurgence on offense is like New Kids on the Block's resurgence in pop.
11. Nick- It's like my grand-daddy always said
12. Matt S- Plays as cool as the other side of the pillow
13. Mike P- Getting a bit too focussed on showing off his speed
14. Chris- If he and Brett schemed to lose the 3rd game by not playing the board will be seriously disappointed.
15. Dale- What in the world is he talking about on the bench, good playing though
16. Mattyd- reaching the pinnacle of mediocrity in saugus defense
17. Brian- 7-0 gives you an NBA JAM Boomshakalaka!!!
18. Lee- After the first game lee was a fat kid in dodgeball...OUT!
19. Jack- The day you bet against Jack in net is the day you get in trouble for gambling.
20. Bradley- The Bradley/Jimmy battles on the board were...amongst other things, stunning.
the lee comment is awesome
Hey Brett, I had control and was even making a move on steve when i got hit. Just so you know Jim appologized...he's a good defender.
Oh Lenny and Steve ...you two played great. I'm glad to see the progress.
Brendan the most improved? Wow.
I think going from 0 points last year to over 20 so far this year would warrant me the award. But hey, what do I know? I'm the NKOTB of hockey!
Joe, you were the veteran presence the white team needed. Too bad you were mismanaged.
And one more observation: Sorry Johnny, but you haven't been the same out there since your back injury.
Lenny, you're right. Statistically, since the injury I've played 14 games and am averaging close to a full point per game less than normal (and my team has only won 3 of those games).
I think part of that is my back, part of it is trying to shake off the rust and get back in shape, and part of that is good defense by the other team.
Despite that I expect a return to form this week!
I part of the Joe collision when he had a break away.
I instantly apoligized to him and did again few minutes later.
I didn't intentionally take him out.
I'll try harder to hit the net Hadley / Handley or who ever you are.
this board is hilarious!
i think i should take a few weeks off so i can get listed as high as griff on the big board.
Jim shouldn't have. He's too nice.
That's one thing i hate in Saugus. Every one stops when someone goes down. Just keep playing, unless the person is screaming in pain and can't get back into the play, or unless it leads to a scoring chance for the other team.
You can have the people on your bench cuddle you back to health.
Get a ref if you want penalties, other wise suck it up and keep playing. Or just leave like lee did
and to you lenny:
you have improved the most i think.
Brendon has always been the same, no matter where in the draft he's been picked.
MVW is the only one who gives you a run for your money.
MVW has great games on D but is inconsistent on offense. He's really only gotten better on D
You have solid games at both positions most times. You use to be pretty easy to get around when playing defense. Now, i personally have a hard time getting around you.
Side question: Anyone else see the Amica commercial where the baseball player is complaining of shin splints and the other dude doesn't believe him...anyone else think of Brett?
JR and Nick, have more polls on this blog
"11. Nick- It's like my grand-daddy always said"
This seems unfinished
"Side question: Anyone else see the Amica commercial where the baseball player is complaining of shin splints and the other dude doesn't believe him...anyone else think of Brett?"
I have been meaning to bring this up...everytime.
Didn't Mike D win the poll on most improved or underated this year already?
I think he's ahead of both Mike W & Lenny in goals & overall points.
I bet he's still a sleeper pick that goes pretty late.
1 guess as to who this "Anonymous" is!
mike D hasn't improved he's always been close to the talent level he's at now.
lenny has improved just in this season alone.
everyone play saturday at 3. It's better. WAY BETTER
out of Jared and Brett, who will reach 100 points first this season?
Let's find out when we play tomorrow at 3.
They are both tied with 93 points.
i sign in for all my post so the "anonumous" wasn't me
Mike, did you put it into quotes because you cant spell the word?
Im just kidding dude.
haha, no.
good catch..
Brett how do you judge most improved ?
points, goals??
