Brief Recap and Power Rankings

Due to repetitive stress syndrome brought on by constantly refreshing the page of his fantasy baseball team, Nick is unable to provide a recap for this week's games. I'll try to fill in briefly for him, and include the Power Rankings for the week.

Sunday night was one of the biggest turnouts we had. JR and Jared chose what looked to be fair teams on paper; each team had 2 full lines. Reminiscent of Game 1 from last week, this week's first game went well over an hour. The dark team once again had solid D from the group of Joe, Lee, Matt D, and yes Jimmy (well, to an extent!). That, combined with stellar goaltending from Jack (returning after a 3 week hiatus) allowed the dark team hold off the White team's attack and eventually prevail 5-4. John and Dale powered the offense scoring all 5 goals (Dale netting the GW). Unlike last week, this game was close throughout - no historic comeback was needed. It was simply a hard fought, fast paced game.

Game 2 was not quite as memorable as the dark team jumped out to a 4-1 lead before seeing the White team net a couple to close the gap. Lenny was the hero though, wristing home the game winner. Sorry Nick, I don't have time to write anything witty here...

Game 3 - tied 2-2 before the lights went out.

Power Rankings

10. Steve P / Mike C (tie) - Both newcomers played well for the White team, each scoring twice (we'll ignore the hand pass this week Mike). Steve displayed some good offensive skills while Mike provided some grit around the net. Good job guys.

9. Jared - Was an ongoing concern all night in the offensive zone, but couldn't score on any of his trademark 80-footers (finished with 1 goal). Jack stopped him consistently all night, with many great saves sprinkled in. Jared's effort would normally rank him higher, but with the amount of chances he had, if he buried just a couple it could have given his team a win.

8. Lenny - Complete opposite of Jared this week. Did not have an abundance of chances, but made the most of what he had. Lenny was key to the Game 2 win by setting up John for a one-timer after a nice rush into the zone and behind the net, and then scoring the next two goals for the win. Could probably have ranked higher, but he never should have argued with his captain!

7. Dale - Only had 2 goals on the night, but they were big as it helped the Dark team win Game 1. Dale centered the second line and did a solid job. He looked for his teammates more than normal, and for the most part made an effort defensively to cover his man (defensive play fell off a bit toward the end of the night). Most impressive was the frequent subbing and keeping the shifts short (maybe he was afraid JR would have benched him if he stayed out too long!). All around a good team effort though from Dale.

6. Mike W - Displayed his tremendous hustle and speed all night, and produced on the scoreboard (2 G, 1A). He was the best player on the White team this past week.

5. Lee - Probably the highest ranking Lee has reached, he earned it with solid D all night. He had an assist as well, but he made smart choices with the puck on defense all night long. When your goaltender singles you out as making an impact defensively, you've got to be recognized on the Power Rankings.

4. Griff - Honestly, I didn't expect to be placing him this high. Griff was very selective in his hustle this week. Yet he was the second leading scorer on the night (2G, 3A) and could have had a few more assists if his teammates could have buried some of the chances he created. You just can't argue with the production.

3. Joe - Third week in a row of stellar play on D. He had his typical sliding style to breakup chances in the defensive zone, and very good getting open at the point. He probably would have had some goals if his teammates could have found him. He also had several nice rushes with the puck.

2. John - Yeah, so maybe I'm a little biased here, but the stats back it up. No, I'm not talking about Goals / Points. I'm talking the number of times I subbed. It must have been some sort of record. Team player folks, right here. Oh yeah, and I'm probably going to make up for that by not subbing at all next week!

1. Jack - It's not happened too often this year that Steve has been outplayed by the opposing goalie, but that's what happened last night. The senior Riley was able to keep the Dark team in the game until they could get their offense going. Very few if any questionable goals allowed, and many great saves, especially against Jared. Save of the night came on a kick save when Jared thought he had a goal. That's a size 13 shoe Jared...you better aim high!

So i get home from a long day of work to find i get shortchanged on the stats and a quality recap. Chalk it up to a case of the Mundays

I will argue if I think I'm right. All that yelling from the bench doesn't help, guys!

I'd would have done the recap but Im working on my subbing skills.

Lenny, in general, I agree. But, I think it depends on what is being said (or yelled). We all know that we need to get the ball out of our respective zones-it doesn't need to be said. Though, sometimes the yelling can be helpful. For instance, someone could be open and our bench points it out to us.

I get no mention in the recap and snubbed in the rankings.

But I will take this opportunity to address something.

This is for all those who have never played organized sport of any kind.

1) If you have an issue with the way someone may be not husting, not passing, not subbing - say something to them first before telling the captain.

2) If someone says you're not looking up for the pass, you should pass more, or what ever take the advice don't, DON'T, turn it into a tit for tat situation.

We are all there to have fun, but at the end of the day we want to win because honestly if you don't it's just a bunch of pointless running around.

If you make a blind pass in our zone that gets picked off and a goal is scored, you gonna get called on it, especially if it happens twice. There is nothing you can say to defend it, so don't try.

If you don't like being called out about how you play, play SMARTER.
No one calls you out on ability level, it all about hustle and how smart you play.

Wasn't passing blame, just stating facts.

does "throw under the bus" work better?

Good to see Jack finally getting the credit for what has generally been solid goaltending.

So JR is the Power Rankings?!!
Finally the truth come out!!

WPR told me that this week the ranking was going to be done by a mystery guest writer.

3/22/09

5 Jared & Matt S - As neither of these guys won a game, they'll have to share the number 5 spot. Jared ran the offence all night for the white team and was the one spark that kept them in each game. Matt S played the best defence all night long on the white team, holding dark players in check and making safe plays out of the zone. If not for his good defence, the games could have been very ugly.

4 Griff - Showed up to play, just as Jared predicted. When he's not on Jared's team, he seems to have motivation to win. I wonder what that is? He played hard and fought to get shots on net, but despite missing some wide-open chances, he put the puck in the net enough times to get the job done.

3 Dale - A couple more weeks of consistency from Dale and WPR might have to rank him #1 if he has a great week. This week was good for Dale, not a lot of points, not quite worthy of the #1 spot, but he held his own and was able to drive offence for the dark team when JR was on the bench.

2 Joe - His defence was perhaps the main reason the dark team didn't lose game #1. He made a couple of key saves when Jack was slightly out of position in net, and prevented the white team from wrapping up game 1. He played great defence all night and contributed on offence as well. Without Joe, the games might have been split 1 win a peice.

1 JR - Not too much to say here that is new. He's not just an automatic #1 spot every week. He has to work for it, and he did. He put in rebound after rebound and had some nice moves up the middle to create offence when there was no other option. Winning 100% of your games and being the lead scorer should get you the #1 spot, don't you think? When he loses more games than he wins or if he has an off-night, he won't be up here. But until then, he owns the number one spot.

Honorable mention: Lenny - Didn't rack up a ton of points Sunday, but did contribute intangibles: fighting on the boards for the puck, screening the goalie, making key passes to get the 2nd assist, tying up defenders so another player can get a free shot on net, and so forth. More points maybe lands him on the list, but the effort is worth noting as he helped his team do just enough to get er done.

Dishonorable mention: Brett and JB for not showing up!

Hey guys just checking the posts for the first time this week. I do want to comment on Mikes comments. I do agree with some but not all of what you said. The tit for tat stuff is childish I was hearing it as well. Smarter play is important too. Danny is young and a rooky as well as very competitive. I personaly have and will keep teaching him the ins and out's doo's and don't. He IS inexperience and will make mistakes and will get called on it. so I wiil keep an eye on him( as long as he is on my team other wise ALL BETS ARE OFF)Lol.
By the way I have played organized spots for 5 years and was Captain of the track and football team Back in the day. You are right when you say not to tell the captain befor you talk to the person first. It sounds like theocratic order. It was me that talk to jared to mention about the subbing. I wasn't sure if you knew it was me or thought it was danny. Anyway, I thought I made it clear enough to Nick when it was time to sub. I know this is a sore spot with nick. So I am sorry if I hit a nerve. We have four defensemen and three of us felt the same way. One of us had to sit way too long too often. I could sit with Nick for the most part because we were trading places or playin together not sitting together, so I mentioned it to Jared and I think he did a good job of metioning it to nick. Nick plays real hard and is a veteran out there but it was a game where everyone on BOTH teams both offense and defense was subbing quickly keeping fresh legs.I never got off when I was tired or when I got off Cris and Danny would sub twice before nick would come off. Enough said I DO apologize and hope nick isn't miffed at me for saying this. Until next week Love Matt S
