Recap

Competition is the quality of a game that we all yearn for. It's the true test of skill and ability. At times it can bring out the best qualities in us. But also, it can bring out the worst in us. Twenty minutes. That's all I can say. Sometimes, it’s hard to get off. Believe me I understand that. But the "I waited on the bench too long earlier, so I’m going to do the same to my teammates" mentality, is a joke. It's juvenile and crude. The "I’m better" attitude also shouldn’t fly. Get over yourselves. And get off. Competition can lead to stupid and selfish decisions, but it always makes the games more interesting…

*Game one was a game of great defensive prowess. “The white team’s defense was spectacular. I don’t think we are going to see a group like that together again anytime soon…the defense was the reason they were able to lock down the 5-3 win.” said one scout. It certainly was a huge factor. Joe, Nick, Lenny and Griff were all at the top of their games. Though, Lenny and Griff were also integral in the white team’s offensive game. The frustration was mounting for Jared and Borges though. “They both tried to their fullest extent in Game one but they came up short. The white team played extremely tough. It’s that simple” said one astute player. Brett and Johnny along with the help from Lenny and Griff were also able to muster up enough offense to win.

*This was the game of games. No matter what side you were on (the winners or the losers) you had to of enjoyed the competition. “Finally! For the first time in weeks, we had a game that wasn’t completely one sided. It was great” said one player. Of course, the word can be used differently depending on what team you were on. The effort that Borges and Jared put into game one was starting to pay off. “Well, they played just as well in the first game but they learned to work with their teammates a little better” said one scout. Mike De Maio, Matt S and Lee all played solid back on defense. MVW also played solidly with Jared and Borges. These combos carried the dark team to a 4-2 lead. It seemed like they had the win in the bag. Until, the white team buckled down again. Just like in game one, the white team’s defense was unbelievable. They shut down Borges and Jared and caused many “no look” passes by Mike Ward. After the comeback was complete, it had Jared clamoring for an unneeded trade.

*Game three was not as riveting as game two, but it was still entertaining. It was another game with a final score of 5-3. It started out with the white team jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead and seemed like the dark team had used all their gas in game two. But they fought their way back, though; they were still not victorious despite their efforts. It was a great week full of competitive games and because of that game three will be lost in the shuffle.

*We were only able to play until the score was 1-0, so there isn’t much to say. But Borges quit because he was “tired”. Very Nice.

Nick’s Ramblings

Guys, how long does it take to get back on sides? Did you notice that the defense that plays better usually use their defensive partner? Did anyone notice that John modeled his recap after mine? He started off with a random rant, then he went into the games and then ended with shrewd ramblings/observations. He must like my style. Borges-maybe your teammates would respond better if you didn’t yell at them. Griff and Joe you were solid on defense. Some of us need to remember, “Payback” shouldn’t be our main objectives. Who was the most frustrated player on the dark team? How would game four have turned out after Jared got his trade request? Brett, you are going down. Who art thou big board? Power Rankings, I’m interested in your top five this week. Brad, it snowed out today…did you leave the house? Reggie says he will be back and healthy in May. (or June, July…what ever is convenient for him) Just kidding, Reggie. Was this a “timely” enough recap? I liked my use of the semi-colon today. 761 words, impressed?

Fair Teams

5 Jared - Prettiest goals of the year no doubt about it!!!!! Two 70 foot goals and a wrap around goal(on multiple tries). Jared battled for every loose ball and came out victorious most times. Jared is like Manny. He make you wonder how good he could really be if he played good defense as well. It’s just Jared being Jared.

4 Griff - With a quiet start to the night, Ryan decided to give JR and Brett a break. Griff took control of the third game by matching Jared’s 70 foot goal and working hard behind the net. He didn’t even miss a beat when having to fill in on defense either.

3 Nick (first time I believe) - The week off proved to be just what the doctor ordered for Nick. He played his best game of the year playing along side Joe as they were able to communicate and bail each other out of trouble. Nick also showed that he is capable of passing the ball somewhere else than up the boards every time.

2 Brett - He does the same thing every week . . . . . control the ball. The only thing that varies is the results. Brett’s clutch game winner in game 2 was inspiring. But he couldn’t have done it with out JR.

1 JR - “I had more assists than I wanted.” But he had enough goals to help the white team to a hard fought 3 win night. Johnny scored his patented goal of pushing the puck between the defense and lighting the lamp, making what little confidence the dark team had disappear.

Honorable Mention:

JB - stopped playing a little early cause of excess fat but still showed flashes of vintage Borges while on and off the ice.

number 3? Excellent! Now does this get me over drafted next week?

Anonymous said...

I would have put Joe somewhere in the top 5.

Anonymous said...

joe was kind of included in the 3 spot with nick

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I would agree with that. now, How about a bottom 5? jk

Anonymous said...

question: who has the longest current winning streak, including goalies?

Anonymous said...

i think john has won his last 10 or 11 games

Anonymous said...

i think i'd be more interested in the bottom five

Anonymous said...

11 wins? time to stack the team against john!

Anonymous said...

stacking isn't fun to the rest of the players on JR's team.

even if he loses all 4 games he'll still have 10 points by the end of the night.

The solution isn't stopping him, it's containing him.

Have a player follow him all night, like a mike D or mike W. Double team him in the corners when he's fighting for the ball. He's not gonna make mistakes so make him give the ball to some one else, someone who is more likely to make a mistake or is just less dangerous than he is.

have them focus on JR and don't expect them to contribute any other way. If they can hold Johnny to 1 or 2 or even 3 goals then they are doing their job.

Anonymous said...

Good plan, but rarely works. Try it and see if you can shadow him like you said. He has a way of slipping by unnoticed. If you can do it, I'll give you a standing ovation!

Anonymous said...

No one ever tries it. No opposing team ever sets up a game plan to stop certain players.

Last Sunday we told the Defense to focus on Jared and JB. Don't let them shoot.

Our defense did a great job in all 3 games, limiting Jared (3 of his goals shouldn't have happened), Jon and Mike W to 8 goals in 3 games. The rest of their players weren't able to pick up the slack. Which is what our team was hoping for.

Mike D 0 goals, Matt S 1 goal, Lee 1 goal.

JR, Griff and I combined for 9 goals and got help from lenny 3 goals and Brendan 2 goals.

A little more focus on JR and you'll be all set. Motivate Jared to play defense. It becomes a 5 on 4 everytime we get it into the zone

Anonymous said...

What did everyone think of the teams?

Maybe trade Brendon for Matt S. or Bradley next week?

I thought the games were great, but just a minor adjustment and they could be even better.

And maybe it's just me but i think we should stop at 10:00. Games that start at 10 just get sloppy.

Anonymous said...

JR cannot be stopped. Not by Brett or anyone! Our best bet is that he purposely doesn't play 100% in order to give the other teams some wins every now and then.

That way we all don't get too depressed and stop playing.

Anonymous said...

WPR how do you determine your rankings?

assistes, goals, overall points

Jon B had 3 overall points.
There wasn't anyone with more overall points?

also if the big 3 according to Brett didn't produce, but each game was actually close in goals who kept it close?
Would it be the defense of the dark team?
Even though dark lost Mike D, Lee, & Matt kept it some what close.

I heard Steve commending them all night.

Anonymous said...

have someone ghost john like was mentioned earlier like Mike D or Mike W.

Look at how much of a pain Mike D is when he is covering the point, ask anyone that has to deal with him.

There is no way that he could out run Mike W. Look at how many of us have tried.

Anonymous said...

not possible johnny's rules and we drool

Anonymous said...

I think he'd be pulling his hair out by the end of the first game

Anonymous said...

the competition was close, not so much the scores.

5-3
5-4
5-3
5 goal differential

and like i mentioned 3 of jareds goals should never have gone in.

Jared's mentality that JR can never be stopped is the reason why he never is stopped. I'm not saying i'm the person to do it, but never say never.

Anonymous said...

as far as WPR goes, he says that he ranks the players based on the effect they had on the game.

"Nick had 0 points but i thought he made a huge difference. JB was a threat all night and if he hit the net a few more times with his shot he would have had more points as well. Points usually tell the story about the players influence that night, but not always, he was an honorable mention not a top 5" - WPR (i asked him that last night)

And i agree with the Mike D point. i hate when he covers me when i play D. i can never get open. I think he'll be able to do the same to JR.

don't know why i'm strategizing on how to stop JR since i'm always on his team.

Lenny D said...

We should just whack JR in the back again. That'll slow him down!

And the center should really be focused on the other team's center on D, especially JR. Too often they're caught too deep, not trusting the D-men behind them. It usually leaves the slot or 5-10 ft in front of the net WIDE open...

Lenny D said...

Sorry, but Brett was good, but nothing special this week. Definitely not deserving of the No. 2 spot.

Anonymous said...

that's the thing about being an assist man. If the person you pass to can't finish, no one remembers the pass and it's like you didn't do anything at all. But if they can finish then everyone does remembers the pass.

Brendon should have had a couple more goals than he did. I'm sure he agrees with me.

Anonymous said...

who deserved the #2 spot then?

Anonymous said...

I'd like to point out the following

Matt S- 1 goal, 2 assist: 1 assist to Jared, 1 assist to Jon

Mike D - 4 assist, 3 to Jared, 1 to Lee

Jared - 4 goals
Jon - 2 goals

Matt S contributed to 50% of Jons goals
Mike D contributed to 75% of Jareds goals

so even though you're main defensive strategy was to not let Jon & Jared shoot, they still were able to because those guys were able to contribute.

The ones that supposedly didn't pick up the slack were able to still get the puck to the goal scorers.

Even though they lost, Joe what did you think of your defense?

Anonymous said...

why can't you get it through your thick skull that 2 of Jareds goals were from behind half ice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And he had a wrap around.

I know they still count, but to say that Mike "set up" 75% of jareds goals isn't a selling point. Most goals aren't "set up" in the defensive zone.

Jimmy C assisted on my goal so he contributed to 33.33% of my goals, but he didn't really set me up, he didn't enable me to score, he was just the last person to touch it before i scored.

If you want to give them all the credit for the goal then go ahead, but i'm gonna give the credit to our goalie for letting those squeeze through somehow.

Just to recap . . . . . . 2 OF JARED'S GOALS WERE FROM BEYOND HALF ICE!!!!! AND A WRAP AROUND!!!!!

Anonymous said...

so you're saying that a solid pass in the defensive zone that leads to a break out that leads to a goal doesn't set up the goal?

Anonymous said...

Brett definately did not play well sunday.

He gives up numerous odd man breaks while playing defense and pinching in too much.

Also for him to blame his teammates for not finishing or doing enough with his blind passes is just rediculous.

You were the third best player on your team behind griff and Jon. No offense your not on the same level as jon.

Anonymous said...

Brett didn't play defense, so obviously this person didn't play sunday

Anonymous said...

good point, anonymous friend, he was ASSIGNED to play defense as i was one of the people to call him off for the position, however, he elected to play offence and leave one defensemen.

We still won though!!!

Anonymous said...

not if the goals are from behind half ice

Anonymous said...

I don't think getting into what were weak goals and what were "good" goals brett, I'm sure steve would like to have a couple of your goals back.

It all evens out.

Anonymous said...

then it's my teamates job to recognize that and they did.

One shift of D. and no goals given up. No odd man rushes.

Nick why are you posting anonymously? i thought you hated that? You were the only defensive player i switched with all night

Anonymous said...

I talked to jimmy and he said there was only one goal from center ice.

Anonymous said...

i'm sure every goalie would like to have every goal back.

All my goals were scored in the slot.

Anonymous said...

i passed to you a few times brett and you didn't score because of your weak shot, so i guess i deserve a bunch more points too.

Anonymous said...

i do have a bad shot. pass to JR next time is my advice to you

Anonymous said...

why don't you post you're name so i can think more deeply about your play sunday.

i just saw the amica commercial with the shin splints

Hey guys, I thought it was a great night of hockey. Frist time in a while that we've seen 3 nail biting games. It was fun! And I must hand it to my white team, the passing, the positioning, the teamplay was the best I've experienced all year!

entertaining***

Anonymous said...

Wow, it's been an entertaining week so far! Just what the board needs, controversy!

Just wanted to hit on a few points:

1. Thanks Brett for scheming against me! To be honest, I think if a team starts becoming overly concerned with me on the rink it's going to cost them. There were two plays that stood out on Sunday. The first was someone (I think it was Joe) had the ball for us around the blue line. I was stationed near the net. The dark team player completely turned his back to the puck carrier because they were too preoccupied with covering me. The puck carrier had a completely open lane because of that where they could have taken the puck to the net all alone. The second instance was the center getting criticized because he left me alone right over the center line. The center line (repeated for emphasis)! I have one of the worst slap shots there...not going to score from that far away. If the other team starts playing bad defense just to make sure I can't touch the puck, that's going to lead to more chances for my teammates, and as we saw from Lenny and Griff this week, they will bury them and help us win anyway.

2. As for our play last Sunday, I thought our team played very well overall. I didn't think Dale was nearly as effective as last week, and I thought Brendon struggled again, but I think Nick and Joe played great defense (very good playing the point too), Griff was strong wherever he played, and Lenny was solid on D and did a great job finishing his scoring chances. As for Brett, I thought he was very good again this week. I do remember at least one goal that he scored that Steve should have had, but all of us score bad goals from time to time.

3. Speaking of Brett, he makes himself a target on this site because of what he posts, but I will say he's a very good player. He makes the effort defensively, carries the puck very well, and likes to pass. He also has a much better shot then given credit for. I understand people busting on him (and he dishes it out so he has to take it as well), but I will say that I like having him on my team.

4. One last point, with how our games are, I tend to value goals more than assists simply because we have a lot of "vulture" assists. Jimmy had one since he gave the puck to Brett and Brett carried it the distance and scored. I had one when I dumped it into the corner and Griff took it himself and scored. Whoever passed to Jared on his center ice goal picked one up. These types of assists are on the weaker side, but overall the rules state that these are assists. There are other times where the assist is critical to a goal though. That's true even with the defense involved. Many times a player is sent in because of a great pass from the D. Since we don't record the games and can't remember every play, it's pointless arguing over which assist was valuable and which ones weren't.

Mike D said...

First off –why post anonymously, seriously?
Be a man & put your name on it.
Are you afraid you’ll be attacked or ridiculed?

I agree some assists are not as good as others, but an assist is an assist and no one can argue with that.

Granted I didn’t score any goal, but to say I didn’t contribute isn’t true. I blocked more shots and broke up several odd man rushes. Not to mention the 2 sticks to my head I took. I have a swollen lip and ear to show for it. I look like the elephant man.

Anonymous please stop putting me in your posts, PLEASE!!
You generally start off with promise of making sense, but then you totally don’t.
Thanks for the props, but I’m all set.

Even though White won all the games I thought they were competitive.

What about if after 2 games if the same team has won both games the goalies automatically get changed?
If the games got split 1 to 1, the goalies stay for the rubber match and if there is a 4th game they automatically get changed?

I’m saying this because if it predetermined before hand no ones feeling will get hurt, it’s just assumed they will be changed.

Anonymous said...

good points mike and JR (I sound like nick).

first, JR. Who would you rather take a shot? Bradley or Jared? My thinking is stop the more dangerous person first. Make the person who's a lesser threat try to make a play. Maybe not to the extent of just letting someone else walk in, but to double team you at certain points wouldn't be a bad idea. And while you may not have the best shot, they some how find their way into the net. It's a scoring touch.

Secondly, Mike. If I said you didn't contribute, I was only referring to scoring goals, not anything else.

The idea to switch the goalies automatically might not be the best idea. What if the team that is winning has the worst of the two goalies? If you switch them then it'll make things worse. But to automatically switch something after a team goes up 2 games to 0 is a good idea, even if the games are as close as they were last week.

We just can't ask Jared. He makes ridiculous suggestions like Me for Bradley. I don't think he gets the concept of why we want a trade. It's to make the teams even, not to lop side it one way or another. For some reason making a trade has become very hard to do.

Mike D said...

good point on the goalie, I hadn't thought of that.

trades should definately be made to make them more even.

What's hard is the loosing team is going to jump on getting rid of the player they think is the biggest weekness.

based on what I remember of the teams these may have worked out ok
Bradley for Brendon
Mike W for Griff
Me for Brendon

They all would have given Dark a goal scorer, but not handicapped the White team

Anonymous said...

it's hard when a team loses. Do they need a defensemen or a scorer? Did they lose cause they couldn't score or cause they couldn't stop the other team from scoring? Tough to say.

I think nick for Bradley would have been good. We had the top 2 D men.

Mike D said...

No offense to anyone, but I honestly don't think anyone we play with needs to have a whole game plan bases on stopping them.

Jared said...

A shocking return of the Big Board. With a couple weeks off the board has been able to straighten out the ranks. Back down to a manageable 15, let's go over some strengths and weaknesses.

1) J Riley-
+ Deadly accurate shot from inside 15 feet. Plays center position by the book.

- No slapshot, which really isn't a negative because he doesn't even bother taking one.

2) Griff-
+ Recently has tweaked his offensive game to become an elite scorer, passes Brett on the BB because he still has that rage on defense

- That wind up on the slapshot takes fooorrrrreeeeeevvvvverrrrrrrr, and he's a tad out of shape.

3) Brett
+ Great ball control and stick handling

- Needs that frontline player (JR) for his game to be effective, (think kevin stevens on the penguins, you can google him Nick)

4) Jared
+ Definate scorers touch while causing havoc in the offensive zone

- leaves a bit to be desired defensively, and boy his drafting is awful.

5) Borges
+ His game was unstoppable circa 2006

- It's not 2006, he's definately gaining those skills back in the recent weeks.

6) Mike D
+ Gives you almost everything Griff does, minus a bit offensively, and more hustle

- Streaky offensively right now but look for him to put it all together in the upcoming weeks.

7) MVW
+ Mike is the ultimate hustle guy which makes him a pain to play against

- Too many mistakes and out of position far too much. These bad habits are fixable though.

8) Steve
+ BB has decided to just throw out last week for steve, his positioning is usually spot on as well as rebound control, and who doesn't like steve?

- A couple bad goals can get into his head a bit, gotta shake those off!

9) Brendon
+ BB is widely recognized for being critical of Brendon, but his game has improved greatly. His speed is underrated as well as his shot.

- Breaks one bad habit and picks up another it seems weekly, when he's hustling he's great, when he's not he can look like Brad.

10) Nick
+ A top saugus defensemen who will have a great SHL career, No nonsense get it out of the zone works for me.

- Still a raw talent who may have been called up to the big leagues too early (think homer bailey), use your size in the corners more against Jared or Brett.

11) Joe
+ Excellent defensemen with a long reach and good speed

- Has the NBA JAM "wild shot"

12) Dale
+ Has found his calling on defense, and his shot is still one of the best in Saugus.

- I'm not going to call it passing, his weakness i believe is vision. Get's a bit to focused on the ball that he doesn't see his teammates.

13) Lenny
+ Goal scoring. Finding consistant goal scorers is tough in saugus but Lenny seems to be right in the 3-4 range most weeks.

- Another inconsistant player whose tough to predict. Some weeks he's a scoring machine and other weeks he tries flipping up the boards to beat MVW to the ball.

14) Matt S
+ Nice guy everyone wants on their team. Good speed and hustle

- Needs to figure out if he's a defensemen or winger, still needs to get a quality shot.

15) Petzold
+ Speed and hustle, probably the two most important attributes in any sport.

- Doesn't know how to play hockey and missing last week has him yo-yo-ing up and down the BB

Lenny D said...

Well, which is it - am I consistent or not?

I think the one who's inconsistent is you, BB!

Jared said...

Sorry Lenny,

Consistent goal scoring but inconsistent play, does that make any sense?

Maybe the BB should reread what he/she types

Anonymous said...

he does contradict himself.

I like this BB. but it can't last. There are only so many good and bad things about a player that you can name.

Good call on Dale. i thought the same thing Sunday. He is so focused on getting that ball to the net. JR yelled his name a few times to get him out of his trance and he passed it to him.

Jared said...

It's more of a hustle thing Brendon, some weeks it seems your not in the mood to hustle, other weeks like last week you were energized and hustled.

It's a problem many of us have in saugus, we don't feel like hustling because we'll get tired and have to sub and no one wants to sub.

Anonymous said...

Teams fr this Sunday (based on who showed last week)

White Team:

JR
Brett
Mike W
Brendon
Nick
Joe
Bradley
Lenny
G - Jim C

Dark Team:

Jared
Jon Borges
Griff
Mike D
Matt S
Lee
Dale
G - Steve

What does everyone think? It's a little tweaked from last week. Traded 2 top players (Mike W for Griff) and 2 "lesser" players (Dale for Bradley). Who ever else shows we can split them up when they come.

Who's in for this Sunday?

Anonymous said...

Personally Brendon, and I know I made it clear Sunday, I think you should stay on your feet. Even if you do intercept the ball, you're on your butt so what play are you going to make? There is a place for the slide. But you don't need to slide on the forecheck, or when trying to keep the ball in the zone.

You're faster on your feet (your speed is underated i think, or under used). And when you stay on your feet you're ready to make a play.

Nick said...

"And Jimmy didn't let up a whole lot of bad goals"

hahahahaha

"good points mike and JR (I sound like nick"

I see how it is

"Still a raw talent who may have been called up to the big leagues too early (think homer bailey)"

You finally gave a tell.

Brett, I will be there. And those teams seem great. I love working with Joe on D. We work well together.

Anonymous said...

NBA JAM - who remembers that?? lol

Anonymous said...

BB, errr Jared, apparently.

Anonymous said...

The only caveat to those teams would be if my dad ends up playing net...at which point Jim C would be on D.

Anonymous said...

If Jimmy plays D you would have to put him on Dark oposite Bradley.

Anonymous said...

yeah, i think that would be the best solution.

Anonymous said...

Just thought I'd put my two cents in on Brett. I've faced his shots before. I wouldn't call them weak. I can remember one WRIST shot he took that I saved with my forearm, and it deadened my arm for a few minutes. Only a handful of the people who play in Saugus have a solid enough wrist shot to do that.

I can't say anything about his slap shot, as I don't think I've ever faced it, but his wrist shot is not something to take lightly.

Anonymous said...

Dave, was that a pun?

Hey guys its Riccardo, don't know if you're into March Madness but I've set up a Tourney Bracket on Yahoo. E-mail me if you want in.

And yes, Brett has an incredible wrist shot, I know that and I've only been a couple times this year.

HOT

JR: For obvious reasons.

Brett: Showed he can produce when going up against a talented team.

Nick: Was able to make decisions and not just go with his instinct (up the board). Didn’t delay, he made quick plays.

NOT

Bradley: May not come off this list for a while. Not till he can lift the ball on a regular basis.

Brendon: Played worse than how JR thought you played last week.

i enjoy working with Brendon most weeks.

He crashes the net hard every time. And can finish most weeks(8 game winners this year alone).

I don't admire his stick handling ability. But his speed, if used correctly, can be very useful.

I like the line of JR, Brendon and I. It's a sniper, a grinder and a playmaker. Good chemistry.

can we have the stats from the past 4 separate weeks up on the site instead of just having the previous week that was.

if we have the previous 4 "week that was", we can really tell who's on a hot streak and who's struggling. And it'll better help make fair teams

Florida hasn't been planned since it seems like it'd be difficult to get enough people going this year. Not to say it won't happen, but it seems unlikely.

That's not to say that we wouldn't do it the following year, or pick a different tourney though.

that's fine.

Are you at the beach at 8 o clock at night every sunday?

why can't people make it in the summer?

Don't bother with Disney!!!!

It's the worst place in the world!!!

Where nightmares come true

If we're at the beach, then yeah, we are there till 8 or later...it's usually not a problem with what time we play though. It's just hard getting enough guys in the summer. If enough wanted to play then I'm always more than willing.

Hey guys Just got home and saw the posts. Just to comment on brendon. I agree 110% with brett on him crashing the net. I was telling Joe that last week. That was a big difference maker. I know that after the teams are chosen I look to see if JR and Brett are on the same team. If they are then I check to see if Brendon is there as well. If not then I check to see which team he IS on. That team usually is the bettewr team
