White Out

The Blizzard of the Century was in full force last night (right Brad?), but that didn't stop another good showing for Saugas hockey (without Brad). Unfortunately for Team White, Mike D could not break enough hockey balls to prevent the clean sweep that occurred.

Team White had a new captain this time as Mike W picked up teams with John R. He chose the ill Brett, as John picked Jared with his first pick. Later as teams were being picked, John made a stunning selection by picking Mike C to play net, despite having other good players to choose from still on the board. Thanks to Mike D for the scouting report!

Game 1 got under way and the Black team jumped out to a 2 - 0 lead. That's when Borges arrived, prompting Griff to get cut from the White team. That proved to be incentive for Griff as he had a beautiful rush down the right wing and beat Jimmy with a backhand. John won the game for the Black team with his 4th of the game. Game 1 went to the Black team, 5-1.

Game 2 started out with more of the same as the Black team completely dominated the White team winning 5-2. Mike D beat Jim C with a beautiful wrist shot off the post (and this time in the net) for the Black team's 3rd goal.

Game 3 saw a change in goalies: Mike went to the White team, Jimmy went to Team Black. Things did not start well as Brett rushed alone on Jimmy. Jimmy must literally have been praying because he just stood there motionless before falling to his knees. Brett went around him with ease and game the White Team a 1-0 lead. This sparked the White team and we had our closest game of the night. However, Griff won it for the Black team giving them a 5-4 victory.

Jon B started looking like his old self, netting two goals in Game 4, including the first goal of the game where he ripped it past Jimmy. The goal was reminiscent of the goal that Washington scored against the B's in overtime on Saturday - from a half-mile away. Jimmy was able to shake it off though and played well enough to back the Black Team to a 5-3 win. Dale was the top scorer in this game, netting two goals.

Game 5 had the Black team leading 3-0 before the game was stopped. This game goes in the records as an incomplete game. Stats count for it, but it doesn't affect anyone's wins/losses or percentage-type stats.

Other thoughts:

Props to Dale for playing great on D, and also Mike W for playing a very good center. Brett and Borges were both on-going concerns for the White team, even if the production wasn't quite there. Both goalies played pretty well, despite some soft goals. I'd have to give the edge to Mike C in his debut though. Sorry Jimmy!

I may not have gotten most improved, but I stand alone on the list of shattering hockey balls.

The funny thing about last night is Jared had just been joking around about how I hadn't shattered one lately.

I missed a week for the first time this year, and no one says that i was missed? I see how it is.

I missed you Nick.

Next time Bradley bails on you lemme, if I can get out to you I'll pick you up.

thanks Mike, I appreciate it.

I have to say John Iam shocked how quickly you had the Recap up...

I knew you couldn't do it this week since you weren't there, so I just tried to get done as quick as possible.

5. Brett- awesome at everything

4. Brett- The only reason he lost was because of his crappy team.

3. Brett- Could've won every game if he felt like it.

2. Brett- Everyone's favorite player to watch and talk to.

1. Brett- another stellar week in the books for Brett!

it's nice to hear from - I am Brett and I love myself...

Hopefully, one of these weeks, we can get competitive teams on both sides. How many weeks in a row has one team won all games? This has to be like 4 in a row. Come on, guys, do a better job picking teams!

Anonymous said...

captains just isn't working.

To have the top player and what could be concidered the 4th or 5th best player as captains doesn't make sense at all.

Lenny is right!

You have to stop picking and start matching players.

for example:

John = Brett, Mike D
Jared = Jon B (one more week and he'll be a top player again)
Mike W = Griff
Brendon = Nick
joe = Lenny, Chris Y

And then split them up, leaving the teams something like

Brett, Mike D, Jon B, Griff, Nick, joe

VS

John R, Jared, Mike W, Brendon, Chris Y, Lenny, Dale

We shouldn't just consider the 1st pick worth the next 2 players.

And goalies made a huge difference last week. The games were much better and competitive after the switch even thought the outcome was the same. No ones feelings are hurt when they get traded Jared.

WPR told me his computer isn't working right this week so there won't be any this week.

This is just quickly what he said

1 JR
2 Brendon
3 Jared
4 Mike D
5 Ryan G

The stats are a little off.

on the week that was, if you add up all the players goals it comes to 24 but the white team only scoerd 23. Someone one got an extra goal.

And i assisted on on of JB's goals JR (i only mention this cause he asked me sunday night) but i actually don't really care.

I know, shocking!!

Brett,

Shoot me an email tomorrow to go over goal / point discrepancies.

Regarding picking teams, we can discuss different ways to choose them up. I'll post my thoughts tomorrow.

Anonymous said...

i think everyone else had 10 more goals too just like brett. so just put them on the stat sheet and take out word for it.

WOW!!

There is definately a Brett hater out there

I thought we outshot you by a large margin.

Goaltending was a difference, but it was more in how they handle rebounds.

Mike who is more a stand up goalie does a lot of kicks saves and they tend to go off to the side where they are less dangerous.

Jimmy dropps more and his kick saves tend to shoot out more in the middle or drop right in front of him. We were able to captilize on a lot of those, but that also falls on his team not being able to clear them out.

I hear what is being said about the picking of the teams, but it also has to do with how they play together - do they "click"

some people click and some don't.
then you also have off nights and you have great nights.

I thought when Jon B came and we took Griff, that another swap at that point would have been good.
Brendon for Lenny
Me for the guy on Defense (not sure of his name)

I get why people don't want to hurt anyones feelings, but everyone pretty much knows at what level they play.
like i know if I was swapped for JR, Brett, or Jared that my team needed a stronger / better player.

So if everyone knows going into it that if the games are blowouts trades are going to be made and it's not personal then it should be good.

And if you look at it the weaker player is being put on the more dominant team and now has a better chance to win.

Just my .02

Anonymous said...

yeah, Brendon for Lenny would have been good

Anonymous said...

Good points mike, I agree. It's hard to tell who is going to have a great game and who will have an off-night as well. I think we just need to be less sensitive about trades/egos. If the teams are unfair, make trades until they are fair. If that doesn't work, do something else. It's when people don't want to trade because they think they can win even though they just got beat 5-0 that is when the teams end up being unfair all night long.

Anonymous said...

Let's go back to throwing sticks!

Mike D said...

I think trades are more about who - fits - that particular teams more than - who is better - any way

sometimes a trade is what a player needs to get him out of having an off night as well.

Lenny D said...

The captains though have to know what their team needs. Some of the trades just don't make any sense. Trading Griff for JB wasn't great. It should've been JB for Ricky or either of the other guys on our D (not sure of the names).

The rookies needed to be balanced out a bit more. In fact, did the dark team have any rooks? I think they were all regulars, plus Jared and Johnny!

HOT

John Riley: Explodes for 11 points this week, 7 points last week, after going through a recent slump of many losses and few points.

Brendon: 2 Weeks in a row being a top scorer. Don’t' be surprised if he starts being picked over some usual top picks.

Mike D: The bounces are finally going his way again. The post is now his friend and not the goalies

NOT

Lenny: That poll must have gone straight to his head . . . and knocked him out. Lenny got overconfident and now is underachieving. Go back to D and start from the beginning again.

Jared: 3 point? That’s all? You should have more points especially if your team wins 4 games

As far as picking teams go, throwing sticks does not work. It almost always leads to unfair teams. Since I'm one of the ones picking teams, I can tell you from my standpoint I try to keep the teams as fair as possible. If I think the teams might not be quite fair then I and whoever I pick the teams with will try to tweak them. In fact, I usually would hear how I always end up picking my team to be the underdog. That's not my intent; I just want fair teams.

I think there are several reasons we've seen one team more or less dominate the past few weeks. First, with the good turnout we've had each week it makes for players being less tired at the end of the night. So last year if Team A wins the first 2 games, they might not have the stamina to battle with a highly motivated Team B in Game 3 or 4. This year fatigue doesn't factor in as much. I think mismanaging teams has been a factor (I'll take the blame for my teams on those occasions), and I also think that individual performances has varied depending on the night. For example, last week I took Brendon around 10th or 11th and he played great. This past week I chose him probably 4th or 5th overall and I thought he was average at best. That is bound to happen when picking teams...you just hope that you can have enough people play consistent to what you expect in a given week.

All of that being said, people have suggested it before, and Brett alludes to it above, but we can try to have more of set teams established going into each week. The key for it to work is to try to balance everyone by their expected performance. We do that with whoever is expected to consistently show up. Then for the other players we divide them accordingly.

I am not sure how well this idea would work, but if people like it, add your comments. Also post what you think would be fair teams. We can take the consensus teams and try to put them together to see if it works. If you don't like the idea, say so as well and we'll pick teams up as we normally do.

Anonymous said...

Brendan was picked 4th or 5th overall? And you thought he was average at best? John only you had more points than he did. If he was average than what was Jared? What was Brett? Who played best then besides yourself?

Anonymous said...

I thought Brendon could have played a lot better this past week...I told him such. I thought that Brett and Borges both stood out for the White team as did Mike W. For our side I think Dale played extremely well on defense, and Griff was very good. Jared had an off night, although he played better as the night went on. Brendon played awesome last week, this week I thought he lacked hustle at times, and turned the ball over too much.

Set teams might not be the greatest idea and I think it may be a slippery slope. May make things too competitive, no? Remember, it's pickup hockey, for fun and exercise (at least I think it is).

The solution should be trades between games to make it more even, if it's really lopsided. What if the two best players don't pick teams and make two wise, veteran types choose? Like Matt S and Joe...

And, please, no comments about people's spirituality on here. Not the place for it... "Boy, this rafter is sure itchy." :)

Nick said...

Lenny, excellent post. I agree 100%

Mike D said...

set teams would make it very competative, which would most likely bubble over into heated arguments and way more hurt feelings than trades made after the first or second game.

agree with Lenny, this is a hockey blog, not a - "let's judge everyone on issues outside of hockey" - blog.

again it's easy to post anonymous, if you're concerned about someones spirituality, be a freind and encourage the person. You really think posting something on here is encouraging, seriously??

Mike D said...

who actually voted - NO - on making a player sit if he's injured and stops play?

It's not a punishment, but if someone is so hurt that they have to stop play, why should they recover on the rink when there is usually a couple of subs waiting.

Also when that happens or some other type of stopage that is not the time for players on the ice to catch there breath.
making players wait even longer becuase you were able to catch your breath is unfair to the players that have been sitting on the bench.
we all pay our $10.

another thing if you've been out there for a extendinig period of time and it's your turn to get off and you get called off by the bench don't pretend you don't hear them or ignore them.

Nick said...

wow...mike is on a rant today

If we make people sit after an injury than brett and brendon wouldn't get any playing time.

another burn!

Nick said...

i didnt realize kelso is now on the board...

Mike D said...

another thing, if you're to tired to RUN and your stopping because you're tired - GET OFF...

If you sub out for defense, then play defense.
Don't pinch in while in the offensive zone if you don't have the legs, speed, or stamina to get back.

Don't say "I'm not good at defense" defense is about hustle..
if you don't want to play it be a man and say "I don't want to play defense"

Nick said...

I agree with you Mike.

Welcome to the latest blog spot here at HTSNGA, where we go over some things that need to be changed with this poorly run site.

For starters the name of this site is Hockey Town Sunday Night Game Action. Can we shorten that? Are we competing against other dueling hockey town websites that play sunday night? Sunday Night Hockey (SNH) boom, change it, next topic.

Now there's so many things wrong with that terrible cartoon of the goalie who says he's "quite good on his stick side". I'm going to leave the joke itself alone. The problem here is that this cartoon get's two, count em, two spots on the front page. And, AND, when you click on the top one you get that creepy dumbo you tube clip, and the bottom one takes you to a lion king singalong. Doesn't help that the goalie apparently plays for a team called the "oreos".

Real quickly, someone try to type something into that search bar. I'll wait....

That was fun huh?

okay now what happened to those somewhat funny links Nick had on the recaps? Effort people, on and off the court.

Well that's it for now, stay tuned next time when we'll try to make sense of the disaster "Rival" link, and why there's only 2 official bloggers.

Anonymous said...

I don't necessarily think that we should have set teams either, I was just throwing it out there since people had suggested it before.

Changing the teams is fine if a game is lopsided, but you don't want to have to change teams after every game...it just has to be within reason. Just because a team might play poorly in one game doesn't mean that the teams are necessarily unfair.

""For starters the name of this site is Hockey Town Sunday Night Game Action. Can we shorten that? Are we competing against other dueling hockey town websites that play sunday night? Sunday Night Hockey (SNH) boom, change it, next topic."

The professor named the site.

"The problem here is that this cartoon get's two, count em, two spots on the front page. Actually, they are different cartoons. The one on the bottom has a caption that reads "that guy didn't need to bump into me that way" The cartoons do need to be changed but there isn't really any good ones online. If you find something, send me a link I'll put it up. Most of you guys know that there are hidden links all over this site (82 to be exact) some are Disney or other movie clips, quotes, or other stuff I find somewhat entertaining.

Real quickly, someone try to type something into that search bar. I'll wait....

I never liked this feature and have always considered taking it off, but the "results"
appear at the top of the page. (and there usually isn't any)

okay now what happened to those somewhat funny links Nick had on the recaps? Effort people, on and off the court.

I have to be honest I'm not sure what links you are referring to.

Mike D said...

haha, Lenny - I just wanted to see if anyone would fess up to voting that way..

I think you can tell when a team didn't play to its potential and when a change needs to be made.

Sometimes the lossing team doesn't want to change because they feel they can do beter as well.

If a change is going to be made then make it or them after the 1st game and leave it at that.

Anonymous said...

If I may chime in. I think guys need to rotate out even if they are not tired. Some guys just don't get tired and others don't because they are not running

Mike D said...

Hey Brendon, did that shot to your head make you forget!!

You got hurt this week!

You & ?? (sorry I forget his name) shanked heads.

you were both sitting there for like 5 minutes..

Mike D said...

i know what you are saying Brendom, but i look at this way..

How do people get better at offense - they play it more.

how are people going to get better at defense - they have to play it more.

But you are correct in what you stated..

Anonymous said...

Also guys are getting cold on the bench waiting. Not to sound like I am complaining but I ended up playing center twice on sunday because my defensive spot never opened up. And I admit I don't have the legs for center.

Anonymous said...

I will say though that the New guys did a nice job asking a lot of questions on the bench on defensive strategies. Communication and constructive critisism during the game is great.

Anonymous said...

when i suggested we match players and not pick players, i wasn't saying we should have set teams.

we can switch it every week but still match players.

We did make 2 trades last week.
JB-Griff
G-G

Both trades made a difference

JB played great, a bit better than Griff i think

And the goalie trade also made a big difference.

The thing is, is when a team blows out the other team, the winning team will make a trade but doesn't want to make a big trade (like JR for Brendon) cause they still want to win. Even though they won 5-0 they still don't think a big change is needed to make the games better.

Griff and JB were too close in tallent to make enough of a difference.

Mike D said...

i hear what you're saying about subbing even if you're not tired because some guys have more stamina than others.

i think that is why sometimes guys who are tired end up staying out because they feel if they go off it will be forever before they get back on.

i actually like when there is 2 full lines and we do full line changes.
when you get more than 2 lines it's get ruff though.

it does get cold on the bench if you're waiting a long period.

When i was playing ice hockey someone had a clock that made a sound every 2 minutes and people changed based on that and each person had a number and you changed when your number was next regardless

Anonymous said...

Matt,

If you were on my team you would have gotten more ice time - I never stay out too long! :)

BIG NEED FOR A CHANGE!!!!

FACE OFFS AFTER STOP IN PLAY!!!!

No more free shots. no one wants to take a shot to the face or anywhere.

a free shot doesn't make any sence.

Just do a face off like every tournament does. It's quick. just have a winger drop the ball.

Mike D said...

faceoff in zone, right?

Anonymous said...

yes mike, after the goalie covers it.

Mike D said...

i have no problem with that.

make it up to the centers to make sure that their team is ready.

if the center takes the faceoff then it assumed everyone is ready, no exceptions.

don't even have to drop could use the 3 tap way like we do to start off

Anonymous said...

it just makes more sense

AMEN, every time joe or mike D gets a free one I have to upgrade my insurance policy. I'd rather they take a face off before they take my face off
