A fun way to pass the time...

For those who have played NHL 09 for the 360, they have attributes for each player. All of the EA games do the same kind of thing. I was wondering, if we were to create a team in 09 full of Saugus players, what would their attributes look like? I've started by taking the top 5 in points (all I had time for at the moment). This is based strictly on Saugus play, not actual ice hockey abilities. This is all in fun, and to give us something to discuss until we start playing again, so don't take it too seriously. I've tried to be fair as possible, but there's always the natural tendency to have a little bias. Anyway, here it is...feel free to add your own, and I'll post the next 5 players when I have some time:

finally a post we can argue about!!!

well done johnny fairly accurate too in my opinion! Do more guys! Wait, that sounded weird.

Brett said...

i don't know if you noticed jared but johnny rated me 1 point fasted than you. pretty accurate i'd say.

Everyones onetimers should be at 0 by the way. we all stink at them

Brett said...

JR i think your deking should be a little lower. I've seen jared pull off more pretty moves than you and he only has a 92. And mine should be even lower. i just ran around lee everytime.

i thought i was the only person to think of things like this

John said...

Brett, it's funny...I based some of this off of my observations playing net too...I've thought when facing him in net Jared could be a bit predictable at times with his dekes. Still very good though obviously. This is one category I might have rated myself a couple of points high, although I think my dekes are pretty good, I just don't get to show them too often.

brett said...

jared does always go to the back hand.

brett said...

if you rate ron leger he should get all 100s

96 endurance for brett is borderline laughable

WHY? i never sub. durability on the other hand.....

bradley should have atleast one rating in the 50s

Errrr I disagree with Johnny's speed..LOL!

Anonymous said...

you forgot to rank cliff p.

brett said...

i actually think that's exactly how the teams would be picked. except for the fact that brendon usually gets picked lower. But the middle of the pack players are only separated by one point or so, so there's no real difference. And Dale gets picked that low cause he's frustrating to play with.

no offense to anyone hopefully

John said...

Reg, how many times have I challenged you to a race? I've given you plenty of opportunities!

I'd say speed-wise I'm pretty fast. Quickness / acceleration wise not so much.

As for Cliff, I am only ranking the active points leaders...by active I'm referring to those that are still eligible to play.

As for the rankings, there are still categories that are not taken into consideration fully: hockey iq, grit, the ability to get open, etc. Also, some categories should probably be weighted more than others: ie discipline probably not as important as puck control. When you are averaging the columns in your spreadsheet you are probably giving everything the same weight.

Finally along those lines, the sum of a players attributes don't tell the full story. Brett joked/commented earlier that Ron would get 100s across the board. Rating-wise, his attributes might be right at the top. Yet, if I'm picking up the teams I still would pick other players like Jared or Brett ahead of him because I feel it would give my team the better chance to win. Sometimes there are just intangibles that are hard to quantify.

All of that being said, the ranking order ends up being fairly close. Not perfect, but it's a rough snapshot.

Mike W & Mike P are the fastest guys at saugus hands down, finish line or not.

Top 3 quickness
Mike P
Mike W
Jared

Anonymous said...

dont' forget the other end of the spectrum - size & strength

who do least want to see running into the boards with you because you know they are not easy to bump off?

Anonymous said...

the fattest ones

Anonymous said...

jared couldn't beat Joe with a bad back and two broken knees in a race

Anonymous said...

i hate jared

John said...

Size and strength I've got to say Chris. Lenny too, but Chris is just really solid, tough to move.

brett said...

mike P hits top speed in saugus, i hit top speed, jared hits top speed. If saugus isn't big enough for someone to hit top speed then their acceleration is terrible

Anonymous said...

or your top speed is really low

Anonymous said...

and how do you know that other people hit top speed when they play? do you ask them, and if that is their top speed then it isn't really all that fast

Reggie said...

AHAHA johnny could probably beat me in a race on a track but there is no way he is beating Mike Ward or Petzold!. I think Johnny is quicker and niftier than he is fast. But that is just me, and i am using this to rile Johnny up!! We Will race. The sad thing is i'm an afterthought in all this stuff, I thought my name would at least be mentioned in the " guys you don't want running into the boards with you". I guess that's what happens when you miss practically all of hockey for a season. Now I know how Ron feels lol. I guess it's all about relevance. IM COMING WITH A VEANGANCE THIS YEAR BOYS! I GOT SOMETHING TO PROVE!! LENNY WATCHOUT!!!!!

Reg..

ps..keep up the good work guys, this stuff makes for the best lunchtime reads ever.

pss.."jared couldn't beat Joe with a bad back and two broken knees in a race"

wow lol.

Anonymous said...

hard to move / dont want in the boards

reggie, big & strong
chris, big & strong
Johny, solid on his feet
brendon, cause you'll get hurt ;-)
Mike D, strong & solid on his feet

Lenny, Lee, Nick, Joe all about the same - good size guys & pretty solid on their feet

Anonymous said...

so you don't think mike p is fast in suagus?

John said...

Hey Reg,

Don't put yourself in Ron's class yet. You at least made it to a few games this past year. Ron had to bow out since his mustache was too heavy to run with.

I did think of you as far as size / play along the boards, but I just don't see you using it effectively enough (probably out of fear of killing someone!). I do think you use your size well when carrying the puck in order to get your wrist shot off though.

BTW, if you need motivation for the coming season just wait until I do your player ratings :)

John said...

One further note about speed: I agree with Brendon that you don't really get to run full-speed too much playing hockey. Maybe if you run from one end to the other (without the ball), but that doesn't usually happen. The forwards are usually higher in their defensive zone, and the defense do not run as deep into the offensive zone as the forwards do.

Usually football and sometimes baseball are the only team sports that you really see someone's top speed.

That being said, I'm still not likely to beat Mike P in a race.

Mike D said...

wow I missed alot.

Fastest hands down - Mike P
he had more in the park HR's in softball than anyone I've ever met

After Mike P you have Mike W
then Jared

hardest to move - Definately Reggie and then Chris, honestly if we played more physical they wouldn't move at all

after them you have Lenny & Lee
I personally think I'm not that easy to move, but I very well could be, but I do spend most of time pushing for position with the forementioned guys
I also think without my brace I'm one of the faster guys out there, again I could be wrong.. haha

with all this said, this is hockey so you really don't hit top speed that often or for a sustained distance, it's all in bursts

that's my .02

billy - 89.13
Brett - 89.25

Brett is officially the better Driscoll

brett said...

so brendon if lee was faster don't you think he'd be better on d, instead of people being able to run around him and crash the net?

Speed is relative. you take mike P who is a 99 and you base everyone else off him. pads and all that crap don't matter. I'm sure that ice hockey players could skate faster without pads on but who cares cause in the game they have to wear the pads. And i think johnny said these rankings are for when playing in saugus. so all that matters is what can happen in suagus, not what could happen under better than ideal conditions.

Brett said...

well speed is what gets me around lee not quickness alone.

and if someone is letting up on a play because they're afraid of getting hurt then they shouldn't be playing at all. If you're tied in a race for the ball along the boards brendon, do you slow down and let the other player get it?

I've never seen anyone run into the boards full speed, or should i say at high speed cause no one ever tops out. people can control their body and stop before they cause damage. Saugus is no contact, so there's no reason to be afraid of winning the race to the ball.

Anonymous said...

win the game, but blow out your knee. cmon, why not? its worth a win right?

Mike D said...

Speed is definately a factor as is acceleration and quickness.

Using Bretts example.

Acceleration is what gets him around someone, quickness gives him seperation, and speed is what keeps him from getting caught from behind.

If we were playing full contact all those things would playing an even bigger role as well because you need it even more to avoid getting crushed.
Would you be as willing to get a ball off the boards or corner if you knew Reggie or Chris had you dead to rights?

Also if you play thinking you're gonna get hurt, you play tentive and you end up getting hurt or hurting someone else.

no one is going to argue that the condition of the floor definately has an affect on peoples ability to sustain speed, but while you're in the heat of the play you're not thinking about that - case and point, look at how many wipeouts we have when it is slick.

brett said...

the win isn't what makes it wirth it. It's the stats

A real team player said...

Really Brett?

Then why last year when Johny busted his mouth up did you instantly start saying you wanted a trade and basically didn't play (giving up on your teammates)till Johny came back?

Brett said...

it's simple logic really. I pass the ball to johnny, johnny shoots and scores, and i get the point for an assist. simple. Without him there i don't get the assist.

Anonymous said...

Hey, Brett. Good luck in the tournament. Johnny said you'd be suiting up as goalie. I feel for you--those tourneys are brutal for the keeper.
