It's not really a recap anymore...

So what recap style tickles your fancy? Do you prefer PPP’s controversial sentence? Do you enjoy listening to Nick ramble and rant about someone else’s mistake? Does Johnny’s boring box score keep you entertained? Hardly. So why, then, have the recaps become a hockey town staple? I don’t get the obsession. But I’m not going to rant…about this anyways.

Quick Game Recap:

Game 1: 5-4 White Team over Dark team (are those still the team names?). The white team should have rolled over the dark team but the white team fought back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game at 4. Remarkably, Johnny’s team was able to avoid his usual choke artist routine coming up with the victory.

Game 2: 5-4 Dark team. The talk that will come out of this game will be Johnny’s uncanny ability to anchor a team that chokes. For the second game in a row, the white team held a large advantage and blew it. An undeserved win for the Dark Team, but they will take it. Game Winner in game 2 went to Jimmy Nelson.

Game 3: The highlight of this game was Nick’s brake-away shot, but the story was that the Dark Team finally got the memo to show up. The game ended early with the score ending 4-1 (depending who you ask), but the white team continued to show guts. They played hard when down and their stats went up for it. That’s how we work in Saugus!

My weekly chat with the Scout:

Nick: What do you think, should we do a “body interview” like ESPN the Magazine did?

Scout: No thanks. No one wants to see you in that situation. By the way that cover picture freaked me out man.

Nick: I know, I still can’t decide if that bionic leg or her nose was creepier.

Scout: Definitely the nose.

Nick: Did you know that you can buy a giant cover at espnthemag.com/covers?

Scout: I think I’m all set. That nose can’t get bigger.

Nick: Her nose was almost as “putrid” as my defensive support last night.

Scout: That was an awful segue into hockey town talk.

Nick: I tried though…

Scout: You did, but you failed.

Nick: So in the end it’s like a Jimmy Nelson slap shot?

Scout: A shot attempt that goes nowhere? That sounds about right.

Nick: Speaking of Jimmy, did you enjoy how he played with Brendon?

Scout: Very entertaining. It was like a repeat of the “event” we saw the week before.

Nick: No sticks thrown this week though.

Scout: But the common denominator remains a constant.

Nick: Ok, your thoughts on our inability to understand a hand pass.

Scout: Unreal. Wikipedia does a nice job with the definition. Perhaps Jimmy should look it up. This is a simple rule, don’t bat the ball with your hand in the offensive zone to another teammate…

Jimmy: HOLD ON!!!! The ball spun towards me though...I want a goal!

Scout: So? He still hit the ball with his hand in the offensive zone and you touched it first-that’s a hand pass.

Jimmy: But the ball rotated east to west. It was spinning at a speed of 53 MPH and umm…umm…

Nick: Moving on…

Scout: Yeah lets, he was pretty close to out smarting us.

Nick: Why do teams that are under the management of Johnny Riley seem to collapse when they have big leads?

Scout: Johnny has the personality that can make some teammates play tight and if the other team starts to gain any momentum Johnny starts to yell and his team collapses.

Nick: Mike De Maio seems like a solid example of this.

Scout: No question. I’m not sure that Mike crumbles under the pressure though. It seems that he just becomes more hesitant and predictable. Hesitation is the downfall to anyone in such a quick game.

Mike: Stop Yelling about me!

Scout: Lenny?

Nick: No that was Mike, but he just pulled a "Lenny"

Scout: Is that what we are calling it now?

Nick: Sounds like a plan. Maybe Johnny won’t yell as much if he could finish off a break-away against Steve?

Scout: 3 posts, right? Ouch babe.

Nick: Your thoughts on Lee?

Scout: He played solid. I just wish he had a slap-shot threat from the point, it would make that knuckle-ball much more effective.

Nick: I have to tell you that I tried to get by Chris Young…I had no chance.

Scout: You had no trouble getting by De Maio for that break-away, but yeah Chris is a beast. He is another guy that would become a great player if he can get the offensive weapons down.

Nick: Yeah, he is definitely a scary opposition.

Scout: Not as scary as Sarah Reinertsen’s nose.

nick, entertaining as usual.

i actually read the whole recap nick. First in a long time

Mike D said...

If you're going to quote me at least quote me right

"Will you stop yelling"
is what I said

cyoung said...

Beast is a good thing right???

cyoung said...

Slapshot...ok professor, help us out with this one. I know its a stretch for me to think that I would have this one, but give me at least the basic mechanics of this shot.

Mike D said...

Chris if you go to google video or youtube and search for either hockey slapshot or how to take hockey slapshot you'll find a ton of tutorial videos on it

Anonymous said...

I think he was looking for a little more hands-on advice that that...

Anonymous said...

seeing that hands on would mostly likely only happen on Sunday, the reference to the videos was most likely appreciated and if it wasn't don't worry about it cause it wasn't put there for you.

Nick said...

mike, i know what you said. My point wasnt to quote you, hence no quotation marks.

I think my point was made clearly.

Nick said...

beast is a very good thing

Mike D said...

I didn't say it wasn't made clearly

I have problem with you nit picking or ripping me for it either

I just wanted to clarify what I said

Nick said...

stats have been updated guys

I know it didn't happen this week. but a few weeks ago Joe slid on his knees and tripped someone from behind and sent them flying.

WHY IS THIS ALLOWED???

If he wants to slide to block a shot be my guest. But when he trips a player and potentially seriously hurts them, it's not right.

Deck hockey rules say that anyone who leaves their feet and trips another player gets a penalty. Whether he hits the ball first or not. oh and guess what.... IT'S PICK-UP STREET HOCKEY!!!! there's no need to be sliding and tripping people from behind.

I know that's not his intent, but it happens way too often(just ask Jared)

It should be a penalty shot at the least.

Brett said...

i don't want to hear.."But i hit the ball so it's ok". It doesn't matter. It's still illegal and could really hurt someone.

tpj said...

where's ron or ppp, i want his thoughts on this past week.

I agree about knee sliding, it will seriously injure someone sooner than later.

Best games of the year i thought, what are we thinking for teams this weekend? I hear brett (bret?) is looking to rehab his hand.

easy to see said...

The week that was says it all
look at the goals

Ron / jimmy got 4 so they cancel out
John / jared got 3 so they cancel out
Mike got 3 / Bredon got 2 so white has 1 goal advantage there

Then when you go to defensemen
Nick got 2 / Lee got 0
Joe got 2 / Chris got 0
4 goal advantage dark

Everyone on dark got a goal except Mike J

Brad, Chris, Lee, Ronnie all got 0 goals

John said...

Regarding the sliding, that's something that I meant to bring up last week. In case I forget, someone remind me to address it before we play this week.

People can leave their feet to block a shot - that's fine. However, we do want to stop guys from sliding into players since obviously guys can hurt an ankle / knee / etc.

John said...

I am curious about the teams this week too Jared. At some point it would be fun to play on the same team, although I don't see that happening anytime in the near future.

This week should also be a better turnout than the last couple of weeks have been.

why not try it said...

oh come on it would be fun to watch you & Jared play against say Mike & Dale, or Dale & Brendon, or even Mike & Brendon

You & Jared will win & get a ton of stats and we will all get a kick out of Dale, Mike, & Brendon screaming at each other, heck throw Lenny on the team and he can scream as well

Brett said...

i say Johnny ends up yelling at Jared for not playing defense and Jared ends up srceaming..."I don't know how!" and then sits on the bench for the rest of the night and doesn't even go out for drinks after.

John said...

And Jared will still complain about the teams!

biblical law said...

i hope he has a ride home if he has even a sip of alcohol brett!

Anonymous said...

Who said that? Nevermind...I don't care.

Congrats to John for piling up his 100th career win and if Brett can just get one more one-handed assist, he will break 100 career assists this year. Also needs 4 goals for the 100-goal mark, but that doesn't seem likely until much later in the year (or is that a challenge to Brett?)

Sniff, sniff...Joe doesn't play nice... Sniff, sniff... I know more about hockey than everyone else combined... Everyone, listen to me!...sniff, sniff...

Suck it up, Brett, IT"S HOCKEY!

nick or john, this site needs some more poll questions.

I got one, whose your favorite person to play with?

1. johnny
2. jared
3. brett
4. ron

Nick said...

what if someone votes for themself?
hehehehe...

keep trying, that poll is not interesting enough.

Anonymous said...

how annoying is nick?

1 very

2 a lot

3 extremely

Nick said...

burn!!

Now that was clever.

Maybe next time I should ignore terrible suggestions like Johnny does so I do not become an object of your frustration.

Anonymous said...

even when nick doesnt know who the guy is, he comes up with a clever comeback. I love it!!!!

tpj said...

i'm curious who "biblical law" was too, hmm.

anywho let's do it johnny, same team sunday! I'll still complain about teams, even if we win.

and did someone say jimmy and ron canceled each other out? if that was you jimmy, please rest assured that you were outplayed by everyone on dark team (except ronnie's friend who apparently enjoyed the bench better than playing). You've had decent weeks, but last sunday was not one of them.

and bradley, can you post again?

Anonymous said...

The goals cancel out each other not the players

I'm fine with you being on the same team

Jared, that sounds fine with me, we just need a captain for the other team to pick against you...I'm assuming we also will be shooting against Dave.

Nah...Brendon would have posted an article from the 60's!

Brett said...

to crybaby Brett:

it's not Hockey

it' pick up street hockey.

Big difference

Mike D said...

I hate sliding

That week I got blown up by Matt, which I now was a mistake, I had to get my left knee exasperated (drained) because the swelling was so bad

If that was my other knee, which I've already had surgery on it could have been much worse

The point really isn't if this is hockey, street hockey, or pickup hockey, I feel (Brett might be thinking differently) is we are a bunch of guys playing a pickup sport and we assume and understand that there is a certain amount of risk for injury involved.

Sliding (granted is legal and has usefullnes)increases that risk unnecessarily

Same principle why when we play tackle football we don't generally have kick offs and start on the 20.
Are kick offs part of football- yes
but having guys running full speed during kickoffs lead to people gettign their clocks cleaned, so we don't do that anymore.

So if we can lessen the chance of injury - why not do it?

Mike D said...

and before someone jumps on me and says I've slid

Yes I have, but it was to break up a passing lane, which didn't put anyone at risk

Crybaby Mike D said...

Sniff, sniff...My knee hurts... Sniff, sniff... Brett, do you have a tissue I can borrow?... Sniff, sniff...

GROW UP, IT"S HOCKEY!!!

Crybaby Brett said...

Sniff, sniff...Here you go, Mike... Sniff, sniff... Why are these guys so mean to us? We just want to run around and hold hands... Sniff, sniff... Leave us alone, you big meanies. Stop sliding near us!!! Sniff, sniff...

Mike D said...

Hey Crybaby - why don't you be a man and put your name on your post?

Nick said...

mike, we all know thats not how it works here. I do find him entertaining though.

Mike D said...

Nick, I know - it's just funny that they're calling me and Brett crybaby when if they really read it and used their little tiny brain they have that we aren't crying about it, but we are stating our opinion and we are not doing it anonymously.

And if they were able to control themselves while sliding and not take people out this wouldn't even be an issue, but they can't

notice the people who are stating that the sliding is not being used properly - it's people who have been blown up by someone sliding into them.

Nick said...

lol...oh I agree mike. Anonymous finds me annoying. they dont put their name to it though. Atleast when I rip someone my name is their for rebuttle...which never seems to happen btw.

I slide a lot, and no one says anything to me...people just need to be smarter.

But that's asking a lot.

Mike D said...

Nick, another funny thing is I even said I slide, but I don't slide at people

I guess that's to much to ask

Hey - I'll stop stating my opinion on it when they learn to control their slide, become fast enough to keep up with us, or they become talented enough to stop us with out blowing us up.

tpj said...

i want crybaby brett to include me too! I've been complaining about sliding to break someone up for about a year now. come one, be consistant!

jonny, you and dave should be captains, i say you both have similar impact on games and if you get me, dave gets next pick, which would be ron if he shows.

and like brett says, leaving your feet to slide and destroy someone is against STREET hockey rules. Nevermind the fact that we should probably try to avoid hurting each other! There's seperate rules for street hockey, mainly because your running not skating, for example, it's easy to check someone whose running, that's why it's not alowed.

i hope crybaby is one of the people who slide all the time so that when i get back to playing i can follow through on my shot and smash his face with the blade of my stick and make his face look as disgusting as my hand.

I can't wait.

John said...

Well, that sounds a little extreme...I'm guessing that "Cry-baby" isn't really someone that slides a lot, I think it's the same idiot who likes to post things just to get people irritated. It's best just to ignore him...if he wanted to be taken seriously then he'd attach his name to the post.

Mike D said...

Brett does bring up a good point.. someone sliding affects the shot and not by blocking it

When someone comes sliding in front of you because you don't want to hurt someone you tend to pull back on your shot, not follow through fully, or not really dig for it.

Perfect example was a few weeks ago there was a big scramble in front of the net, the puck rolled onto Jareds stick and he basically had an open net until someone (I honestly forget who) slid face first in front of him. Jared just kind of stopped. He very well could have tried to zing it in and most likely would have nailed that person in the head or face and it would have still gone in.

how would people feel if instead of pulling back on those shots people let them fly even if they know it was going nail someone in the face, or if when someone slid at someones knees instead of letting themselves get hit they starting to drive their knees into that person that was sliding?

Crybaby - be seriuos, why don't we allow hitting / checking? Because someone would get hurt

you're telling me to grow up, whose the one who has to act like a little baby and post anonymously, did momy forget to change you're diaper this morning?
Be a man, put your name on your posts.

Brett said...

actually i'm gonna play with one hand so that i have an excuse for when i swing wildly at the ball and hit some one who is sliding in the face or neck.

I'll just say "Hey i can't help it, gimme a break, i only have one hand"

I gotta say i have shot at people on purpose who have gone down to block a shot.

Crybaby Brett said...

Sniff, sniff...Leave me alone! You're making fun of me!...sniff, sniff... I just want everyone to appreciate my awesomeness...sniff, sniff... why can't I be loved like Johnny?...sniff sniff...

Sniff, sniff...Hey, what about me? I've been crying for years and no one listens...sniff, sniff... please oh please stop sliding... It hurts my feelings and I want to run to mommy...sniff, sniff

YOU ALL NEED TO GROW UP!

Sniff, sniff...It's OK guys, I think...sniff, sniff...At least we have each other's shoulder to cry on...sniff, sniff...Maybe we can make tea at hockey...that will calm these sliders down...sniff, sniff...then maybe they won't be mean to us anymore...sniff, sniff...

Mike D said...

Well I look at it this way

All 3 of us Brett, TPJ, Mike have all put our names on our posts.

TPJ asked to be included so clearly he doesn't care.

all 3 of us Brett, myself, & crybaby have replied multiple times, if we were taking it personal we would just not reply.

our replies to crybaby are - in general - anyway because we don't know who he is.

we're just messing around

I don't know if anyone is still reading this post but I totally agree with the no sliding into a person rule. To block a shot is different. If you are sliding into someone it's probably because you are slow and couldn't catch up to them. I got new knee pads this year and couldn't control the distance of my slide with Mike and I felt wicked bad about the hit. If you want to hurt someone, then hurt yourself not someone else
