I wanted my recap to break the 200 post mark, but it has now lost momentum due to a new post by WPR. He asked me to post it here because of it's length. Here you go:
Starting this week, WPR will be implementing a traditional weekly power ranking system. This first list is based on who the people at WPR(we will refer to ourselves as I) think have been the best(only regulars players will be on this first list.) Kinda like a mock draft list. From here on out though, people will either move up or down on the list based on their play of the most current week. This will also be based on what is average for a certain player, and did they play better or worse than expected. The list will now include 10 spots for the players at Saugus to attain for and maybe even rise above the rest for that precious #1 spot. But how long can you stay at #1?
10 Mike D - Some might think I'm being kind putting him here. Others can't believe he's this low. But Mike D has shown in the past that he can be that smothering center who can shut down the other teams top scorer. So every week he's picked pretty high. It's time to return to form Mike. Cause it'll take a blast from the past performance to keep you on this list next week.
9 Lee - Getting up there in age, but what team couldn't use a little more experience to settle things down on the back end? Lee got a bad rap last year for being slow and having a temper and abandoning his team. While the stick throwing is still a problem, he has somehow adjusted to the other fault he has. I gotta say no one blocks more shots than Lee. Maybe it's his massive ice hockey shin pads, but he stays in front of the shooter and never gives up the middle of the ice.(Bob Caterino thought that playing D in the direct middle of the ice was the same thing as not giving it up. Well it's not. Cause sometime the outside can be just as dangerous. Lee has a nice balance)
8 Chris Y - Is the new up and coming defender in Saugus. He's big, he's strong, hes quick, yet his shot is lacking(the other extreme to Joe, cause his shot is rarely in the air) Once he finds his shot technique you may see him above Nick or Joe on this list. For now he's just a real solid Defender with no real holes in his game (defensemen aren't usually expected to score anyway)
7 Ryan - When we think Ryan we usually think of an out of control maniac with a weapon called a hockey stick. And that viewpoint would have been accurate last year. But I think he's starting to shed that image of himself. Now I see him as a bigger, heavier, less productive, but still as argumentative..Jared. Now he does play a little more defense than Jared, but he tends to wait for an opportunity at the red line and try to take it and score. The weird thing is, is that he usually cancels out Jared when playing verse him. In the end Ryan will get his goals and win his fair share of arguments.
6 Joe & Nick - I'm grouping them together because I've rarely ever been impressed by their play while on their own. But when they are together(and they have been a lot this season) they can be a dominating force(kinda like Captain Planet). From now on they will be separate entities on the list each week. I guess if I had to split them up I'd have Nick ahead of Joe cause he has more upside due to him being younger. And as for Joe well you can't teach an old dog new tricks. As evident of the fact that he's been shooting the ball 10 feet too high for the past 3 seasons that I've witnessed.
5 Dale - It's funny(he he funny, not HA HA funny) Dale is the only player in Saugus, that when you think of him you think either: Very good forward. Or: Very good defensemen. You remember him for his ability at both positions. Now Brett is great on D. He's played it for many years and plays it in tournaments. He may even be the best D-Man. But you think of him as only a forward who helps on D. Same goes for Johnny. But Dale leaves that lasting impression on you no matter where he plays that night. You either say: wow what a goal, or: man he was tough to get around.
4 Brendon - For the 2 years that WPR has been observing the games that go on in Saugus, I always thought it a crime that Brendon would always be drafted near the end of the pack. Yes, he has his moments where you want to kill him. Seems like once a week at least. But put that aside and he gives you the second line offense you need to win while playing hockey in Saugus, or anywhere for that matter. I think hes finally getting the respect he needs and deserves.
3 Jared - His only weakness is Defense....and the H1N1 virus. Yet, even though he doesn't play the other half of hockey, his offensive output is incredible. Now you may say: well that's because he does waste energy on anything but offense. And I say: well then everyone try to play like he does, cause I guaranty no one puts up the points he does while playing his style hockey. I don't think anyone has the endurance to run aimlessly like he does for so long.
2 Ron - Thank goodness for Ron dedicating himself to Saugus hockey once more. He has been ranked #1 many times already this year by the previous write of WPR and with good reason. He is maybe the one person you want on your team when the score is 4-4 cause he can score from anywhere.
1 Johnny - Still in my mind the best player that currently plays in Saugus. Now maybe if this format was instituted a few weeks ago Ron would be here, but Johnny just has "IT" what ever that is. And no matter how many goals Ron scores on his wicked slap shot. I'd still pick Johnny first if I was starting a team (mainly cause Ron would probably retire one year after drafting him)

Nick WPR would have been more than willing to wait till your recap hit 250
Good thread Brett, just goes to show how much we love lists and rankings, we should make a rule every post has to have some sort of top five in it...okay okay okay, top 5 all time saugus goalies
1. Dave
2. Tony
3. Steve
4. Joe
5. Johnny
Look how interesting this post just became. And WPR you pretty much caved into what I said your rankings should be, expectations vs. actual performance.
it seems a lot like big board though...
top goalies:
1. dave
2. Tony
3. Darren
4. Steve
5. Jimmy nelson's dad
that last one was no joke...hehehe
Brett, you really were my #4...you would be in front of steve but you havent played enough goalie.
but Darren, as the best driscoll, has played enough.
does every comment need rankings too?
the top 5 comments so far on this thread is as follows:
1 Jared
2 Nick #2
3 Nick #1
4 Brett
5 Brett
And Jared all the credit goes to WPR not me. i can't take any credit. WPR is a man of the people. he gives them what they want.
BB is based on what he expects next week. WPR is an blurb about how each week has effected each players "hockey worth", and at the end of the season, their overall performance.
Will a goalie make the Rankings next week though? I think Steve has a shot. Although Darrin seems to be wanting to play more. WPR needs to give more concideration to the goalies.
Top 5 who don't play anymore:
5 Cliff
4 Borges
3 Scott F
2 Derek D
1 Eric F
top 5 goalies:
1. Joe - We haven't seen him play in years. But, from what I remember he belongs here.
2. Dave - Impresses every game. But is getting up there in age and consequently slower.
3. Steve - We've seen him evolve into a much better goalie. ()
4. Darren - Good, sound goaltender.
5. Jack - Is a machine! I can only say despite his age, he's the only one who could move up in the ranks. (like fine wine...better with age).
i remember joe quite differently
Stamina is a big part of being a goalie and Dave has shown he needs to improve his so I'd have him lower in this list. Kind of hard to place Joe on here since he hasn't played much goalie recently.
Based on potential only, I'd rank them:
1. Dave
2. Brett
3. John
4. Joe
5. Tony
6. Jack
7. Steve
8. Jimmy
I haven't seen Darren play enough to accurately gauge him in the above list.
Strictly in Saugus, I'd rank them:
1. Dave
-------
2. Joe
3. Tony
-------
4. Steve
5. Jack
-------
-------
-------
6. Jimmy
In my mind there's a gap from one to two, from 3 to 4, and several gaps from 5 to six. I think Dave's lack of stamina is offset by Joe's temper in net. Dave might not make it through game 3, but Joe would have already flipped the net and walked off :)
My prediction this year for Saugus goalies:
1. Darren
2. Jack
3. Dave
4. Steve
5. Tony
6. Jimmy
Here's my top 5 WORST goalies of Suagus, all time:
5. Mad Joe (when joe gets mad look out!)
4. Jim C (keep improving and you should be off this list soon)
3. Bad Tony (when he's bad, he's horrible)
2. Doug Nelson (not as good as I remember)
1. Mike K (sorry Mike, not your fault though)
Jared was pretty terrible as goalie in saugus too despite his winning percentage.
TOP 5 ACTIVE GOALIES:
1 Dave...slower but still good. 2
steve...Look for him to pass Dave at the end of the season. 3 Darin... A good goaltender 4 Jack...Should be third. 5 Jim
ALLL TIME TOP 10
1. (calm)Joe 2. Dave 3. (mad)Joe 4. Steve 5. Jack 6. Brett 7. Jimmy 8. Tony 9. Doug 10. Mike
TOP 5 ACTIVE GOALIES who are still playing with us right now and not in utah or wherever:
1. Steve. He has shown that he can have the hot hand, or glove and be the difference in a game
2. Darren. From what weve seen so far, hes the better driscoll and the best driscoll in net. unless brett is feeling better all of a sudden.
3. Jack. Plays solid most weeks
4. John. If he plays net, we see why he doesn't always do it. Hot and cold mostly.
5. Jim C. Just kidding. Ill reserve this spot for the goalie du jour which is usually better than him 9 out of 10 weeks
out of all the goalie post no one has spelled Darrin's name right.
And i'm gonna say joe is the one putting himself at the top of lists
that stats and standing are the only tangable thing to base a list of who's better on. If that's not the case then why keep them? A list based on anything is nothing more that that persons personal opinion
brendon your not making sense again.
Interesting...Tony has played net this year and I have not. I'm not sure the active status applies right now.
Jimmy better than tony? are you guys insane?
team suggestions:
Two assumptions: jack and steve in net. Jared and Johnny want another go. Sort of different, but the same. Do we just want to go rematch of last week???...of some kind anyways
dark white
Ron Johnny
Griff Jared
Mike D Brendon
Joe Nick
Lee Chris
Ronnie Brad
dale danny nelson
others? Joel, matt s, lenny, jimmy, reggie?
i like them, definately split up the defensemen even and we'll have close games.
is Griff definate?
he never is.
when will big board realize that it his duty to have his post up by wednesday night!
If Joe and Nick are tied for 6th place, then 7th-10th place is really, 8th-11th.
By the way, hows Dharinne Drihskulle doing?
Excuse my spelling. I meant "Dharrringh Dtrisckoulgh". sorry, Dharrringh!
Now that's finally some good blog speak!
This goalie ranking stuff was enough after a couple comments.
I wonder how jawrod and junny are plotting out their game plans for this weekend.
I am pretty sure I will be playing this week
will joel ever show again?
His hopes of playing for the team in montreal next year are fading
Maybe Joel will corner stone his own team?
that would be funny if 2 teams from saugus went. The original Alliance team and then a team of guys who go that didn't "make" the Alliance team. That would be a interesting test of who plays better together as a team and then top it off with the possibility of facing off against each other makes it very interesting.
I thought we were playing for fun, not to "make " the Alliance team?
dark white
Ron Johnny
Griff Jared
Mike D Brendon
Joe Nick
Lee Chris
Ronnie Brad
dale danny nelson
Nick, I think this would be a slaughter by the white team, but I'm up to the challenge.
Show yourself so I can kick you off our team!
lol ron...very funny.
that wasn't me
I think it was someone one the white team trying to make it look like they were on the dark team
nope mike, it was you.
what about those teams would be slaughter anyway?
its because you're on the team mike.
Was BB intimidated by WPR this week?
How's this?
Dark / White
Ron / John
Brendon/ jared
Dale / Mike
Joe / Nick
Lee / Darin
Matt / Chris
Ronnie / Bradley
Steve / Jack
if darin showed, the white team would have a huge advantage.
Darin is the perfect bench player because he can play both sides of the ball well...
I don't see it.
Well I see it...
Ron Advantage over John
Brendon slight advantage to jared
Dale advantage over Mike
Joe advatage over Nick
Lee advantage to Darin
Matt slight advantage over Chris
Ronnie even with Bradley
Steve advantage over Jack
...advantage Dark 5 - 2
Then if you wanna rank them...
1)Ron 2)John 3)Jared 4)Joe 5)Brendon 6)Dale 7)Nick 8)Mike 9) Darin 10)Matt 11)Chris 12)Lee 13)Bradley 14)Ronnie
...That's 3 of the top five and 5 of the top 10 which means a slight advantage Dark
Dark over White either way!
i dont see the huge difference between Joe, Nick and chris. Why are they ranked so far apart?
In fact, Nick is the only one conrtibuting on offense.
Nick has 22 points
Joe has 11 points
Chris has 10 points
Nick and Chris have both played about 10 more games though.
If Joe has any advantage over those two (which I dont think he does) it is negated by the fact that they are playing together....advantage white!
Can everyone stop overrating Joe's slapshot?????
"Ronnie even with Bradley"
That's priceless. Bradley is our only chance at having an advantage this week???
hahahahahahaha
