Perhaps layering is the key…picture this scene: Johnny is coming in hard and a defenseman (let’s say Nick), who was in charge of covering John, was able to knock the ball away from him. The ball started rolling behind Johnny toward the other goal. Which way is each players momentum headed? Johnny is still headed toward the net; Nick would naturally go toward the ball. All of a sudden another winger, let’s say Brett (who represents the second wave or layer) comes streaking in and beats not only Nick but the winger, who is supposed to be covering Brett, to the ball. It leaves the defenseman caught in the middle. Johnny is still by the net, Brett passes it off and goal is probably scored. Do you understand? It’s a strategy that can break down the best defense. If you were the defender where would you go once you were beat to the ball by Brett? And don’t tell me you wouldn’t go for the ball. You all would. It’s an unnatural act to stand there with the ball 5 feet away. Would you try to cover Brett and break up the pass? You leave Johnny open though. Do you cover Johnny and leave Brett room to stick handle or take a shot? The other defender is on his man and I’m sure the center still isn’t back yet at this point.
Do I sound bitter? Hope not. That’s not the point at all. It’s just a play I saw happen several times tonight…to me it’s the toughest play to defend. It’s sounds like a pick your poison kind of thing to me. I want some suggestions. Let’s gets some real hockey talk going. How would you defend the play?
I tried to make a diagram but I failed.

nick your sunday night rants dont count as a recap
Nick those plays are just normal plays in hockey. Hopefully it's a race to the ball and brett can't make a clean pass to johnny.
Here's another scenerio, a defensemen (we'll say nick) turns the ball over, that's fine, we all do it, now the forward (we'll say johnny) has it and shoots it, goalie makes the save. Okay now what should Nick do...
a. try to compensate for the mistake and clear out johnny eliminating any second chances.
b. pout off to the side and not try anymore cuz hey, you already mest up, so let's let johnny shoot as many times as he wants.
I know I was on you Nick but my reasoning is if your going to be a top 3 pick i'm looking for more than decent defense. No more blaming everyone else, make a play!
That was the best hockey i've seen this year tho, a great rebound from last week.
I think it's safe to say that tonight was the best game of the season.
With many friends taking advantage of the earlier start time, teams were able to substitute whole lines rather than individual players.
Through the first 40 minutes, it looked like no contest as the Not-red team jumped to a 5-0 lead, bolstered by great play in net by Jonathan. But within minutes, the Red team was able to quickly score four goals.
The Not-red team responded with an extra goal, but that was followed by a last minute, 2-goal push by the Red team to tie 6-6.
What a game.
Of course what made it great was that everyone got along, treated everybody with respect and had fun. Great job guys!
BOURNE POWER RANKINGS
1. JOHN - John continues to play at a great level and provides an instant boost to what ever line he's in.
2. JOHNNY - Johnny was key in the late surge by the Red-team this week, making his mark in the sand twice.
3. BILLY - Rumor has it, that Billy did his annual declaration of "I'm not playing hockey". We all expect it, but this early?
4. BRIAN - And Brian laced up his sharp shoes, using his rod to twice place the short, black cylinder into the woven chamber.
5. DAN - Dan helped the Red team tonight and gave them the defensive presence they so sorely needed.
In most 2 on 1 situations I was taught at hockey school to try and take away the slot from both players so neither one has a good shot on the net. Try to keep them on the edges so that it cuts down the good angles of the shooter and open man. This helps out your goalie. In most cases, you then allow the goalie to focus on the shooter because that's what the goalie's job is.( To make a save.) Just don't give the shooter a good lane to come in on. It's generally the defenseman's job to mostly keep the other player without the ball (puck) from getting a pass on an open side of the net away from the goalie's focus, which is the shooter. This way he doesn't get an easy, cheesy goal. If you can't get to the open guy in time and you know it, get your body low and lay your stick on the floor (or ice) so that the guy with the puck has to make a perfect pass to get it to the other player who is open. A lot of times the pass will have to be lifted over your stick which makes it hard for the open player to handle sometimes. This gives you and the goalie time to recover. An exception might be when one player is a sniper and the other player is not a good scorer. I may decide to try and cover the sniper. "That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!"
"goalie makes the save"
I usually stop playing when the goalie makes the save. Do you keep playing?
Seriously though, not trying to make an excuse I just had a real question.
nick if me and johnny are in the same play you described i'd say take johnny if he has the puck. but if i have the puch then take johnny cause i'm probably gonna try to force a pass.
While Nick is doing what he suppose to do and playing defense in this scenario, where is the other defenseman? And why isn't he helping?
Oprah?????
Did she by this blog site
The best way to defend Brett is to tell him that the town of Braintree is the worst.
He'll lose possession of the puck as he flips out and tells you why low milk prices are but one of many features that prove Braintree is the best.
WHAT IS BOURNE HOCKEY!!! AND DOES ANYBODY CARE!!?? WHY IS BOURNE HOCKEY POSTIN ON OUR BOARD!!!
"POSTIN"?
Good morning Brett :-)
Now ... How exactly is it that Nick's one of the best defencemen in Saugus? ?????????
Because we dont have a lot of defenseman to choose from. :)
"defencemen" ??? Good morning Petzold! : )
Hey, did I start a trend by quoting, then saying good morning to the person that I assumed left the post then ending the greeting with a smiley?
So who are the top defenders?
in the nhl? probably lindstrom and chara.
Nick, what I was saying was that ...you try to give the goalie the best situation to make an easy save instead of a hard one. And no I don't stop playing when the goalie makes a save. I stop playing when he ties the puck(ball) up. Have you ever heard of rebounds? Try to clear those away if you can. That's a free tip for you. You can thank me later. LOL
Who is TPS????
And is Dale really posting again???
Good morning Jared! :)
"dave you just have to go into firewall settings on router then in the dmz host add your xbox ip address thats how mine was fixed"
Thanks for the tip, Brett, but that was about attempt 4 out of 500 I've already tried. My latest attempt I think unlocked brick mode on my router; I'm pretty sure it's hosed.
Eventually I'll be back online. I hate linksys.
Yes, it really is me posting again.
THE ABOVE QUOTE WAS NOT MINE!!!I have to be the only one on this website who has people use my name WITHOUT MY PERMISSION and say stupid things. I say enough stupid things on my own I don't need anybody's help. QUESTION: DOES ANYBODY ELSE THINK PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE ON A WEBSITE IS A FORM OF LYING! Let me know.
The stats are a form of lying.
That question should have ended with a ? mark. See what I mean, I make plenty of mistakes on my own!
They would be hard to keep track of but, I would love to know everybody's +/- stats. That says a lot about a player.
Wait, so let me get this straight, Dale said that this quote:
"Yes, it really is me posting again."
Was not from him. So? How was that wrong? Unless all those other posts really weren't yours.
Something is messed up here. Dale, I don't know what's going on, but you are confusing as heck!
Can we please ban "BOURNE POWER RANKINGS" aka Scott Mirch?
Thanks
"I have to be the only one on this website who has people use my name WITHOUT MY PERMISSION and say stupid things."
Hahaha! You're the ONLY one? Not by a long shot!
Well then, how do you know when someone actually said something if everyone's pretending to be someone else? Talk about confusing!
I don't care if you want to be anonymous , but, pretending to be someone else is going over the line. It's called: MISREPRESENTATION! Which is a form of lying. It's especially bad if you use someone else's name to say something derogatory about another person who reads this website. That could cause bad feelings between two people for no real reason.I know you guys are going to make fun of this, but, I really do not think it's funny. I really would appreciate it if people who keep making comments and posting my name would stop it. SERIOUSLY.
Ok, I'll stop now.
Hehehe. Hey Dale, maybe if you don't want to be mirepresented, you should only post things when you are logged in with a google account username.
Take a look at Dave's post. He did it while logged into his username.
No one else can pretend to be you when you are logged in. If it bothers you that much, then just sign up for an account and use it.
That way, if anyone pretends to be you, people will just assume it isn't you since they didnt do it logged in as your user. Right?
By the way, did anybody else see Johnny throw Jimmy under the bus for not cleaning up his mess when he let Jared score?
It was the worse case of blaming since Adam blamed Eve. :)
But Lenny, I see you use your "leverage" against guys all of the time to prevent them from getting a shot off (how I hurt my back last year thank you so much). I just thought he could do the same!
Joking aside, I think Jimmy has improved since the first time he played D. He's definitely underrated at keeping the ball in at the point. He was in position a lot last night to cover his guy too - he just needs to be able be stronger on a player's stick in order to improve defensively.
But yeah, I did call him out :)
Darren
Flat out winning those games while getting hammered by shots
Brett
Actually holding is own with a half saw'd off hand
Dale / Griff
Playing peacefully on the same team and PASSING it to one another
Brendon
Pulling his hamstring, but still played
Steve
letting a few rollers in

Not making a trade
picking teams then trading himself for Johny and loosing 2 out of 3 (or is it 3 out of 4)
Mike
Actually handling the ball better
Only yelling a few times
Lenny
finally returning
completely just laying down on the ball in the crease and being surprised that Jared was annoyed by the play
Nick
Actually defending getting beat on a play
Screaming "Brendon" when talks a trade came up
Johny
only willing to trade Dale for Chris (or some equivilent)
after getting bashed in the teeth once already not wearing a mouth guard
Good Idea. Thanks
Sorry about your teeth John!
What was deleted? I demand to know!
Funny stuff jared. The only thing I am surprised at is the fact that you traded your team with Johny. So that means that John picked your team??? And you picked him team???
Really???? What???!!??? WHY????
This is Dale. testing, testing. Does anybody believe me? No? Looks like it's working Dale! See? I was right!
It's a modern day miracle!! I'M CURED!! I'M CURED I TELL YOU!!
This is Dale's evil twin brother speaking. I stole Dale's Password. I will now be posting comments under his name. Some comments will be his and some will be from my evil mind. It will be up to you the reader to decide which one of us is REALLY speaking. Good-bye for now. Ha Ha He He Ho Ho!!! (Evil Sounding Laughter)
Don't you have an actual twin Brother, Dana?
I'm glad you can finally get that monkey off your back. And by monkey, I meant griff :)
griff is more like a gorilla
Yes, I do have an actual twin brother named Dana. Every time I have a bad game it's actually him and not me playing.
As A matter of fact he was the one who insulted Griff and told that 14 year old girl to shut up.
i'm confused, what's going on?
Dale has a real twin named Dana. Not a joke. Has the same kinda personality, too, I think. Creepy.
I have a creepy personality? Is it because I walk around wearing a yellow raincoat all the time whether it's raining or not?
