When Will We Ever Learn?

I'm not going to be specific and call to mind all the calls that should and shouldn't have been made. If i did then no one would show for 4 months from being offended. But i just want people to stop making calls the way they think they saw it. How bout asking after the play: "Hey who was that out off of?" instead of "OUR BALL." And please stop saying: "Then call it!" cause if we did call it every time, then we'd play less hockey than we did tonight. The big play of the night was obviously Ron's hook on Jared's break-away. Jared's at fault for not taking the penalty cause he tries to use reverse psychology(it doesn't work Jared) and it's the white teams fault for not calling it on themselves. Own up to your mistakes. If you hooked him, then say you hooked him and personally give him the ball at center ice. If it went out off you then say it went out off you. Darrin stopped playing on half the goals cause he didn't know what was happening. And now he doesn't want to play. The phantom offsides, the ball hits the penalty box area, comes back and we keep playing and leads to a goal. I've never ever seen that play happen and all i hear is: "We always play it like that" or "If it hit's the netting we still play it." I stopped, Brendon stopped, Darrin stopped. I thinks it's time to clear up the rules before we play again. I don't care if the teams are off a little, or if we're losing cause our team is underperforming. That's not why i quit. I quit because i can't stand people making calls in their favor cause they jump to conclusions.

Hey I owned up to my hook on Jared.

I didn't mean to do it, but it would of and should of been a penalty. But since we don't do penalties, I wanted him to have the penalty shot.

I was trying to get behind him and lift his stick. He is obviously way too fast and my stick went up and caused a hook.

In hind sight, I should of just let him go. He definitely made a good play to get around me.

But I never downplayed it at all. I wanted to him to take the ball at center ice for the penalty shot.

Other guys on my team said, no penalty shot because it wan't a clear break away.

Nick said...

why is brett posting? sigh...

jared says I need to be more vocal of what I thought about the play. I think If everyone followed my lead and kept quiet I would play more hockey. In the end, that's all we really want.

stop bickering

Jared said...

I'll take most of the blame for playing terrible tonight, Ron and Nick were tough to play against down low.

Brett, you just aren't used to losing i think is the biggest problem. Less bickering is definately needed by me and others, but it would help if every now and then johnny would throw us a bone and let us have a call without fighting us on everything.

Defense ruled the night, and i didn't want to ruin my 100% penatly shot record, so no worries on the hook Ron. I vow to come back after my week off refreshed and ready to play some good hockey again!

Nick said...

what is jared actually being refreshed from?

Jared said...

nick shouldn't you be working on a real recap?

Nick said...

i will say this, I loved how are defense played. Very smart. We won most of our battles and we knew how to transition from man to man. I enjoyed it very much so. One the best defensive efforts that I have ever seen in Saugus. Everyone but Brendon did their part (for the most part). Sorry Brendon, dale was left open way to much...we survived though.

Nick said...

Im letting the events of tonight fester in my brain as I sleep. Letting it all sink in...after all, it was another winning week for me...I should enjoy it.

new stat! Johnny, winning weeks! get on it!

nothing funny ryhmes with my name...sigh

Nick said...

oh wait, the word tick does. funny.

Nick said...

anyone else notice dale wearing both black and white? He looked like a dalmation.

103 dalmations? That's one two many.

Nick said...

who knows what song "na na na..." is from?

Brett said...

ok so we kissed and made up on the penalty shot.

But by calling off-sides and then continuing to play, that leaves Darrin clueless as to what is really happening.

Like the goal that bounced out and back into the rink. I don't know if it ended up counting or not, but that was one.

Or how bout the 3 mile high clear by chris that "wasn't tipped" that lead to the face-off that led to a goal?

And what call did the dark team get to go in their favor?

I'm sure Johnny is gonna say: "Well Chris hooked me!" ok he did. But you didn't have a break-away right infront of the net, you were along the boards. And it was completely unintentional(i think). Chris went for the ball, missed, his stick wrapped around you, and then he let his stick go cause he tried to do his best not to keep hooking you. And Johnny please don't complain how Brad was bumping into you all night.

Darrin was even complaining about how all the white team players would take their hand off their stick and put it on or around our player when on the boards. That's a penalty

Why can't we keep two hands on the stick? It's a good habbit to get into. There are obviously times to use only one hand. But i hope you have enough common sense to know what i'm talking about

Brett said...

gettin jiggy wit it by wil smith?

Cyoung said...

definitely wouldn't hook intentionally, and i am not completely sure what that is , definitely alwayd going for the puck, so get out of my way.

I wish i could clear the puck that precisely, then I would actually have some kind of shot and score more goals.

too much whining, respect the calls fellas

Brett said...

Lenny, sorry for yelling at you.

I was just running away from Brendon for a long time and looking for someone to pass to and all my offensemen are just standing at the line waiting for the ball.

I needed help obviously and no one came down to help out to relieve the pressure.

Jared said...

all the small things- blink 182?

Brett you'll be back on johnny's team and winning next week, I'll get a new batch of underachievers to come to my side. Why not new captains, obviously i don't know what i'm doing, we should do ron and johnny or brett and johnny.

Brett said...

i'm not respecting the calls when their wrong.

If that's the case then it's who ever can make the call first.

I guess i should just look forward to next week when me and johnny will be on the same team again.

John said...

Brett and Jared, do not be hypocritcal. I did not once argue any calls about balls that went out of play. The ONLY call that I argued was the offsides call. If I missed it, then sorry.

As for playing it if it goes out, we've always done it if it comes back in. On that play I stopped and waited for everyone to get ready, and afterwards asked Jared and he said to count the goal.

On the play that went out from Chris, it looked like Chris just shot it out. Once someone said it was off of Ron's stick, we gave you the ball - never argued it.

Ron said...

I've always been a proponent of, "if it's close, don't call it off sides". PERIOD!!!

Without a ref, we should only be calling obvious off sides.

There was at least 3 calls that fit into that category.

Brett said...

Thank you Ron!!

Why are we such stiklers when it comes to offsides?

People call it like they know for a fact even when the person was .43 inches offsides.

Like the play by Griff when he gloved the ball over the line. I was gonna let it go cause it was pretty close, but he called it.

I like the idea of letting the extreme close offside calls go

Brett said...

Johnny the one that was tipped out that lead to the faceoff in our zone is the one i was talking about. You guys won the face-off and scored. I forget who shot it, but it was clearly tipped cause two people swung at it at the same time and it shot pretty much straight up

Brett said...

and Nick, my thread has generated more posts in 3 hours than yours did all last week.

you can learn from me.

Brett said...

I guess the main thing is, is that Darrin is turned off from saugus because of all the random calls.

Ron said...

Tell Darrin not to get turned off. It won't be this bad again... for at least a couple months.

Plus tell him I'll make him a custom Avatar.

That's sure to get him excited to come back :)

John said...

If we're thinking of the same play, we just let you take the ball out since it was off of Ron.

Brett, not to sound like a jerk, but you guys were the ones complaining the whole time.

And I agree about the whole "if it's close don't call it too". I didn't find Jared's close, but like I said - if I misread it then my bad.

I will say though, just so everyone is clear, if a team is offsides, the entire team must clear and get onsides before anyone can enter the zone. There seems to be a bit of confusion overall about that one.

Brett said...

Johnny i agree we were cry babies. But only cause every call being made was wrong.

There was one johnny where we took the face-off in our zone the others we got to take out but only after we had to fight to get it and convince your team(over Griffs own constant complaining about things that never happened)that we should get it

Brett said...

That deal might work for me Ron but not Darrin. But i'll try to get him

Nick said...

not what I was looking for. It can apply to many songs though, including "Hey Jude", by the beatles.

i'll narrow it down to journey, anyone know the song?

Ron said...

Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" from the Evolution album

Reggie said...

Journey Nick?? Cmon!! shouldnt you be listening to AMR. or OAR.. or LAMFAO or...FOB>!!! but Journey... you old fart! That being said you are a jerk for topping my most consective posts in a row!!!! Im in for this week i hope. My hammy is pretty healed up, we'll see if my back olds up. Im finally back at work.

Ron said...

Appreciate you not callin me out Reg.

But i figure before someone else does, I found the answer to that song title from Journey here

John said...

Brett, for the record when Chris hooked me (or bear-hugged) I was in front of the net with a chance to score. I don't blame him on the play, it happens sometimes. I only brought it up to say that Jared was not alone in the defense making questionable plays against him.

As far as the faceoffs when the ball goes out, that's something that I really couldn't care less about - I can't remember ever caring enough about plays like that to argue them. The way I look at it is everyone is a Witness - if someone says they did or didn't touch the ball I take them at their word for it. As for other people on the team arguing a play - leave it up to the captains to work it out. They should have the responsibility to reasonably sort out the plays without it leading to any big arguments. What they decide is then final so no one else can argue the play. In reality, it shouldn't be too hard.

Cyoung said...

I think I enjoy being in the middle of controversial plays, but last night was ridiculous.

everything was controversial, quoting the words of Rodney King,"can't we all just get along?"

I think that for the amount of hockey we play we are bound to have a few of those nights, plus the pats game definitely did not help anyone! We just need to not lose our minds in the game or even quit.

Lets move on, solidify some of the questionable rulings last night and talk about some of the nice plays or things that did work out last night. for instance, I played center for a bit won a couple of face offs, got some decent shots off last night and played what I think was pretty good D. Still learning though!

who's next,

Ron said...

I got a highlight goal that I would like to gloat about :)

After getting a nice feed from Nick in our defensive zone. I was able to break up ice because TPJ or Lenny (i forget who) was caught down real low.

I went hard up the ice to meet Chris on D. I did my thing and caught Chris playing the ball instead of the body.

After the soft touch ball movement through him, I went in all alone on Darrin.

I knew immediately I wanted to shoot far corner. It worked, I scored.

To my surprise i got some cheers from the other group who were watching the last 30 minutes of our game.

Cyoung said...

Yeah, that was a good one. Frustrated the heck out of me because I knew I was playing the ball and should have laid back. I was mad at myself after that.

Nice goal though. Not sure what I was thinking.

Ron said...

Yeah even though we don't play contact hockey, you need to always position yourself so that you don't allow the player to step around you like that.

It's easy to go for the ball though. I notoriously play the ball and allow the player to run by me.

However, I typically only play that style on offense. I routinely get beat by Brett and Billy at least once or twice per game.

That being said, I usually don't play that style on D, because you have no backup.

The old defensive wise man will always tell you to watch the players chest, not the puck/ball.

Griff said...

Brett, how can you say anyone was complaining as much as you? You were complaining even after you quit and pouted. The majority of the plays you complained didn’t affect anything. There was one major offside that shouldn’t have been called, Jared’s hook and the face off in zone. I know when the ball went out near me and Jared I asked him if he tipped it but he didn’t know. If you have ever seen Nick shoot it is definitely possible to shoot the ball that high without it being tipped. He does that consistently.

The play where the ball hit the outside boards and bounced back is legal. The fact is we even stopped because of your incessant complaining. We have played the ball off the lights, ceiling and everything else. How can you even debate that wasn’t supposed to be played? You also were ready when the play started because you were playing defense against Johnny before he scored. It was only after he scored you flipped out. I am also not sure how Darren wasn’t ready when Johnny started at the red line and scored at the opposite circle. Pretty sure he was ready but made a bad attempt at a save.

I also want to congratulate you on the amazing feat of overshadowing Jared’s complaining ability. That is not a small task.

I think the main problem for your team was Billy’s hair. Your team was too focused on his amazingly long and wavy hair. It was reminiscent of Zach Morris from The College Years.

The fact you quit on your team is inexcusable. Any player who quits on their team is a complete and utter loser. So take that 

Griff said...

I also don't recall complaining. I did demean you for blaming everyone else(mostly Lenny) but yourself for not playing well.

I guess now we truly know who the better Driscoll is!?!?! even if he doesn't put in the effort.

Griff said...

I also let Jared be offsides on one play. We was very cordial and even thanked me for the non call. We almost exchanged a small hug. That would have been nice!

Brett said...

Griff when the ball hits the lights, the net, the ceiling, they are all over the playing field. When the ball goes out of the playing field i figured it stops.

Me and Brendon stopped(even ask Brendon), but the ball came back to Brendon. As soon as Johnny said play it, brendon passed it over to him. I was caught off guard and said "What!? it went out" Johnny kept running so i had to atleast attempt to stop him, but he was too far ahead. (It's funny how people remember the play differently)

I guess next time there's a questionable play i'll yell and scream till everyone stops and gives me a lengthy and accurate answer as to what the right call is. I'm sure everyone will like that method better.

And Johnny you weren't in front of the net. Chris' stick hit the boards when he let go of it.

The difference between me and Jared is he pouts, i complain.

Jared said...

Yes we did share a moment there griff when you let that one slide. Pretty sure you weren't too worried about bradley streaking in on ron on the far wing though.

And Griff, complaining about us complaining is still complaining, and me saying this is complaining. I will admit i took some satisfaction from brett having a melt down last night.

Couple other notes...Why isn't billy the best player there? He's the most talented and can do everything. He must get frustrated or just doesn't have some intangibles. The tough part about a winger is you fail 90-95% of the time, or 100% for some of us. But guys like ron will keep coming at you even if you've broken them up 20 times in a row.

And johnny, you actually use the reverse psychology on me all the time, and i fall for it. But people don't notice your complaining as much because you don't have the obnoxious ear piercing loud voice that me and brett have.

Griff said...

Brett, I am pretty sure quitting on your team is pouting (I would know). You also had an off night and I think that contributed to your frustration.

Do what Jared does and where vasoline. It makes it less painful. The smell of burnt vasoline is pretty distracting too!

Griff said...

RECAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need a real recap

John said...

Jared, I love that line used about your teammate: "I will admit i took some satisfaction from brett having a melt down last night". That's classic stuff right there!

And Brett, on the play where the ball went out and came in, I waited until your team said to play it before I started running with the ball.

Nick said last night he was going to work on a recap today, although since he couldn't sleep last night you would think he'd have it posted today already!

John said...

BTW, I've updated the Player Cards with the latest stats, and pictures for Nick, Brad, and Reggie.

I still need to get pictures of everyone else for the "back" of the card, and will need "action shot" photos for everyone for the "front" of the card once I design it.

Reggie said...

Johnny thanks for my Player card.. i would have preffered using Anson as my pic rather then stare at my double chin in the picture.. lol. im 37 to be, im gonna weigh 255 by march and im a wing that shoots right handed!!! thanks ! I am out for this weekend as well.
keep up the whining and posts guys this is great lunchtime reading!

Brett said...

Maybe nick is the problem with the threads not getting enough posts. He's not controversial, he's just funny.......but looks aren't everything ha ha zing.

John said...

Reg, I might change your pic later...but I'll actually have to see you on a Sunday to remind me!

Nick said...

nice work ron, it was stuck in my head all day yesterday. Today I have that "Give me the beat boys" song in my head...anyways..

why is it whenever someone else makes a blog post they have to compare it to mine?

Nick said...

was that the worlds slowest loading picture?? yesshh!!

Brett said...

Sorry Brendon, as one of Jehovah's witnesses, i wouldn't feel comfortable hanging out at a bar that has a christman theme to it. Those chrismas lights bother my conscience.

Nick said...

brett is always there to demean someone's hard work.

Brett said...

that's what i do.

The attari is quite amazing though. I hope you have pitfall for it

Nick said...

stats are up. recap coming. John, where did you get that pic of me from? My eyes were red...lol

also, what is with the blue on the career and season stat pages????

Nick said...

I also didnt get my new stat!!!

Ron said...

The blue over flow is from bad html code.

You guys are amateurs.

However, my bitterness has left me and I'd be happy to fix it... if you want me to that is

Nick said...

go for it ron.

Brett said...

Ron's bitternes may have subsided. But PPP's hasn't

Brett said...

where has PPP been?

Ron said...

Ok, the master of disaster has cleaned up all the stat pages so they are nice and clean.

No more blue over flow and side bar format problems.

Johnny/Nick, you were missing the Table Tag tbody.

Brett said...

I know it's late and no one will probably responf, but has Brendon turned the corner? This makes(imo) 4 weeks where he's played as expected or better. I gotta say his forechecking annoyed me all game long and it showed by how i played.

Ron said...

I'd agree that he played pretty well. He's about to take over the 3 spot in the points race.

John said...

Guys, playing against him must have given a completely different perspective, because in the car ride home it was agreed that he was the worst player this past Sunday.

And Brendon, I say that without trying to be insulting at all, just an honest opinion. You had probably more chances with the ball in the offensive zone than everyone else combined, and made very few good offensive plays.

Part of that is my fault: I've got to really ingrain in you where you need to position yourself both in the offensive and defensive zones. Poor positional play was at least half of the problem.

On the other hand, your passing HAS to improve. To your credit you are willing to pass. That's not a minor thing since it shows that you are looking to make plays. But you have to both look for better passing lanes, and simply make better passes. If there is no passing lane then try to carry the puck a little to create one, or simply shoot the puck or dump it down low.

On the positive, you did forecheck very well. You just need to work on the other parts of your game to become a more consistent player.
