Civilization Revolution

Let's take this week off of hockey to discuss strategy for C.R. I've tried taking the Greeks and Genghis Khan so far, with mixed results. I've learned spreading villagers thin with many cities is not a good strategy. I've also seen the devastation of a nuclear bomb. Let's Discuss.

Genghis Khan is crap. They don't get the money you usually get from taking out the barbarians; and the cities that get created start with ONE population. Plus the barbarian villages are usually not in ideal locations.

The Greeks are only good because they start with Democracy, so you can build pikemen practically right away.

My favorites are the Americans because they're rich and can rush units at half-price, the Germans because all of their elite units automatically get upgraded (so, you create a warrior that becomes elite, once you've researched Legions it becomes one, then a Knight, Tank, so on), and I like the Russians because they get the defensive Loyalty advantage.

The Aztecs aren't terrible with their 'units heal after victory' upgrade, and the Romans with their 1/2 price wonders.

The only other civ that's worth mentioning--and only for a water map--are the English because of their naval support.

And, I hate the French. Not much different from real life.

Best game on the 360 in my opinion. Haven't ever played anybody online, but it's one heck of a game.

I just played brett online. I was killed he won. We have to all play a game together.

Ya i built way to many villages. Ya realizing gold is key. I forgot about the half price rush units, I need that i'm way to impatient.

Oh ya, and the cake is a lie dave, don't forget.

And as far as strategies go, until the end when everybody has artillery, defense is always stronger than offense. So if you're going to attack someone, bring an army, because you'll need it.

The biggest bonus your city can get is from Dye, which is researched with Monarchy (unless you're Ghandi, since he has access to all resources). Quite helpful for getting rich or pulling in science.

Also, as soon as you can build a Galleon and start looking for the Lost City of Atlantis. Quite the bonus for finding it.

Did you get the game, Jared? I'd love to play you in it. I'm out of town at the moment but will be home Monday.

Brett has it too? Sweet! That'll be fun, but we'd likely have to schedule a game together, as it would probably take all night.

ya it took us like 3 hours. I downloaded it when i saw you guys playing it so much.

Ya I have to figure out what to research, i'm pretty chaotic. Seems like defending your city with some archers will fend you off for a while, until brett nukes you anyways.

Anonymous said...

Brett NUKED you while you had archers??????!?!?!!!?? Perhaps you need to...ahem....just quit now. :)

Things to know for defense:
Bronze Working gives Archers
Democracy gives Pikemen
Gunpowder gives Riflemen
Mass Production gives Modern Infantry

Legions are better than Horsemen. They have the same attack and are WAY less expensive. Tanks aren't very useful, since almost right after you research them you can make Artillery. Catapults (from mathematics) are helpful for actively defending your cities, since people will camp out on your land to interfere with your production.

The first civ to research Masonry gets walls built in their capital. That helps for creating some early defense.

I always focus on defending first, although everybody plays differently. I build a few warriors to get me some money right away, and once you have 100 gold you get a free settler. That second city I get I typically have bring in gold. Then I create a settler for a third city. I don't usually expand beyond that, but everybody is different.

Science is more important than gold, but they're both important, since gold can rush things, and you get bonuses for hitting milestones with gold. I don't focus too much on wonders, but late game sometimes I'll go for them. Culture is (I think) the least important, but if you're way behind another civ's culture then you can start losing cities, which is never fun.

Also, don't underestimate naval support. Your ships (especially battleships) give bonuses to adjacent combat. If you have a fleet of battleships, they add 27 to their adjacent tiles. With the English civ (or is it the spanish?) it doubles that support. You can protect your cities much better with that, or that helps greatly with attacking.

If you couldn't tell, I really like this game. One of my favorite games I've ever played.

Call me anytime you want to play.

i was hoping this was up to mock john for his lost post.

after reading these comments I realized I was sadly mistaken.

Look what you started John!

Jared said...

Nick maybe you should start your own non-hockey related post that interests you. Perhaps one dedicated to the career of mark belhorn.

it was more devastating when he signed with the yankees, for me, than damon was.

remember when he wit that homer in 2007 against Fuentes? That was a clutch WS homer.

Speaking of the 360, we've either got to continue our season, or create a new one now that has Nick...that's probably the better option now that I know Boston should be terrible.

Jared, can you set it up today?

Who hasn't finished their games? I have four games left versus Brett, and that's it. I think we're close.

Nick said...

make sure we get a recap after you guys play :)

Brett said...

I like the Germans

But the impi warriors have a 2 space moving capacity and if played right you can use them to end other civilizations before they even have a chance to grow

I loved Civilization until "IV". Is Revolution worth upgrading to? I thought I was the only one to ever play this game, lol...

Anonymous said...

Civ Rev is a lot different from the pc games. I own Civ IV; I like revolution much better. It's not as in-depth, and there's a much bigger focus on fighting. Often in Civ IV I'd barely ever even see another player; in this game you're always getting attacked by someone.

My only complaint about Civ Rev is diplomacy is quite limited, and you always end up at war with everybody. At the end of the day I'm okay with that, as warfare is the most interesting part. The game is much more streamlined.

Ya i wish you could actually keep your allies for more than 3 turns without them turning on you and demanding all your gold. It gets annoying every turn all the other rulers start threatening war if you don't give them something.

9 oclock start time we have me brett dave and griff, any takers for the 5th spot! Nerds unite!

I don't think I'll be able to play again this week, but definitely while I'm out there it would be a blast. We'll be leaving Thursday night/Friday morning, and have lot of prep work to do beforehand.

I got lucky; I had the perfect setup. I was on a big enough island to setup four cities with access to resources, but secluded enough that nobody bothered me the entire game. Griff was the only one who ever attacked me. Next time I won't be so lucky. Plus the Egyptians get bonuses to desert areas, and that's what my island was.

Plus Jared nuked you for no good reason, and it kicked you out of the game. I was hoping he would nuke me so I would have been justified in taking him down. My whole 'you nuked Brett so I'm going to destroy you' line of reasoning was pretty shaky at best. I just had a big army and I wanted to use it.

Brendon if you don't like us posting about Civilization Revolution, you are welcome to start your own super-cool thread about all of the super-cool things in your life. No need to complain about our thread. No need to be a hater.

Brett, by the way, have you ever gotten the chance to play Portal? It's available for download on Xbox Live Arcade, and I believe a demo is available so you can preview it. It's hands-down the funniest game I've ever played, and really strains your brain at times, too. Jared's played it as well. I would highly recommend it.

Also, I think the next time we all play, we should all choose our civilizations. There are at least five really good civilizations, so nobody would get screwed:

Americans (gold)
Germans (military)
Aztecs (gold/military)
Romans (culture--1/2 cost wonders)
Greeks (science--they start with Democracy)

There are quite a few good civs, in fact there are very few bad ones, although the Chinese are pretty terrible. And the Mongols.

I also think that we should play with the handicap settings next time. I mean no offense; I've just played that game way more than you guys have; I don't mind evening out the playing field. I like a challenge.

Jared, I wanted to address a couple of concerns you brought up when we played:

1) Be very careful about having a city focus on any particular thing. If you want to change what your city is cultivating, you should use the custom option. Else it's very easy to have a city that's completely unbalanced. Yes, it's good to be able to focus on certain things, but there are better ways of doing so--build libraries, universities, markets, and banks. With balanced cities you can typically adapt better.

2) In the beginning of the game, after I have a few (typically 3) Warriors out and about, I typically stop production in my first city for awhile (though I'll typically build an archer or two). That way you can focus on your city growing, and also on science. The faster your city grows, the more people you have working in the city.

3) Don't spread yourself too thin. You need to be able to defend ALL of your cities. I typically only go for three or four cities myself, as any more than that becomes a bit difficult to defend. It's better to have 3 or 4 great cities than 10 average ones that you can't defend.

4) Except with warriors, always attack and defend with armies. Griff had a perfect example of why single units are a bad idea. He got a knight from the artifact he found. If he had just one army of knights he could have wiped out the map, but he only had one unit, which anybody could defend against.

5) Nuclear bombs have only a very limited use. They're great for the RARE instance when someone has a city that's too well-defended for you to overcome. Think about it--the bomb costs 750 resources to build. You could build five ARMIES of artillery for that price, and that many artillery can usually topple any defenses. Combine them with spies and naval support, and you can typically take anybody out.

I'd love it if the next time we played we were all on the same continent so we could fight it out. There must be a way to choose a map or a scenario to play on.

I don't know why people didn't get the ingenuity of FRAG. I was actually just thinking about that game the other day; I was thinking of picking it up again. I have Munchkin (and a bunch of expansion packs), but apart from me and Sara it's hard to find people to play with.

We should get together while we're out there and play FRAG. SUCH a good game.

This thread is about awesomeness and cake. If you don't understand, then obviously you're not very awesome.

The cake is a lie.

Chris, you in for hockey this week?

couple things irritating me with civrev.

I was playing under a democracy and someone took over my city then immediately wanted peace. I was forced you sign the peace treaty. yay.

What's the point of signing peace anyway? Everytime i researched something new. Every other civilization would threaten me with war if i didn't give it to them!

Aztecs do rule tho, my new favorite. Brett, I wouldn't be able to play until late tonight, past 11.

Yeah, like I said--diplomacy is very limited in that game. The CPU players are constantly trying to get what they can out of you. I like much better the idea of playing versus friends, as we did a lot of technology trading and with the exception of you NUKING Brett, I thought we were pretty fair to each other.

When playing the CPU, always view them as a potential enemy, because they will always turn on you. The only time you should give them anything they ask for is if you're completely surrounded and have no way out of a particular situation.

So, before they take over your city, you should make a deal with them, and in the five or so turns of peace, build up your defenses. It's a constant battle of desperately trying to keep your cities.
