Heads Up

Why is it that some of us like to make nothing into something? Every week it's the same small things that get the same people going. All it takes is a bump or tap. A tumble or even just becoming off-balance. Hockey is a contact sport. None of us are trying to hurt one another, but we do. People will get hurt-it's a roll of the dice we all take. But the question is, when a player goes down how should we react? Should play stop? Should play go on? The truth is, no matter what is decided, some will stop playing and others will keep going. It's sort of an instinctive type of thing. Some of us have the adrenaline pumping so hard that only a goal gets you to slow down. Others are more sympathetic or have a hero complex. But whatever the case may be, there is no right answer to the question. A real "solution" may not be out there. But we need to at least have a rule to look to at the "after point". A small rule to keep some big mouths from complaining.

Game 1: 5-3 final score in favor of...drum roll please...ba-dum (the sound drum makes)...the dark team. Now if you weren't there last night (cough..Ron) when I say the phrase "dark team", it means absolutely nothing to you. Right? Now what if I told you who was on the dark team? Now I'm cooking with gas. The captain of the Dark team was TPJ. And they won game. Unbelievable, right? The MVP of game one was Jeremy, with two clutch goals and Brendon was able to "vulture" out the game winner. But the big story was that Brett and Johnny did not request a trade afterwards. We were headed into game two with the exact same rosters. Oh, the excitement.

Game 2: Same roster, but Dave went into net, and Jack came out to play out (see how that works?). Most predicted that game two would put things back to "normal", and they were right despite a near comeback by the Dark Team. The final score was 5-4 in favor of the white team but this game should have been over soonner. It was 4-2 white team and I remember coming off to the bench saying "We've got this game". And than they scored, twice. Tying the game at 4's. Than all of sudden, Brett hit a deflection, in-mid air, into the net, for the game winner. Can I add another comma? It was like Johnny's game tying goal in that amazing game four comeback.

Game 3: The final score was 3-1 White team. Nothing of note here. It was just another game that Jared was on his way to losing.

Nick's Ramblings.

I think I'm leaning toward a tie dye shirt now. Matt, solid week out there man. Doh! And you too Petz. Mike D we missed you this past week. Hockey is going to be Saturday this week boys at 2. It's like playing a Sunday game after a Monday night game. Reggie you tried that play on me again...you failed. Sadly, Jeremy didn't. Some of us need to learn to control our slapshots. John, hope the back gets better by Saturday because we are playing with or without you. I almost played up your back injury, but when was that last time I played up someones game? In game one I look to the bench and say, "Where is Dave?" the reply: "Laying down". Anyways, 10 minutes later I look over to the bench Dave is watching the game and I notice that John is now missing. I ask, "Where is John?" The reply: "Laying down". Weird family. Brett, we finally know who the better Driscoll is. He wears a leather coat to hockey BTW. Joe, it didn't happen, huh? Maybe next week. Jared you went 1-1-1 this week and your winning perecntage went up, how does that feel? Anyone else think Ron is freaking out that I didnt post the rosters? Ron I would have, but I couldnt remember everyone. Matt S we want updates.

You tell her Tony!

"Hannah Storm in a horrifying, horrifying outfit today," Kornheiser said. "She’s got on red go-go boots and a catholic school plaid skirt … way too short for somebody in her 40s or maybe early 50s by now.

"She’s got on her typically very, very tight shirt. She looks like she has sausage casing wrapping around her upper body … I know she’s very good, and I’m not supposed to be critical of ESPN people, so I won’t … but Hannah Storm … come on now! Stop! What are you doing?"

I get it, nice job...well it worked.

So no Erike Figrorrieah last night?

I will try to have stats up tomorrow, but we'll see how it goes. My hard drive crashed on Friday, and I need to reinstall everything.

Fortunately, on Thursday I decided to back up all of the stat data I had just in case (it was the first time in about a year). I might have been able to recover everything anyway, but it's a good thing I backed it up anyway.

And Nick, I'll have to see how my back is...through tonight it was still doing pretty miserably.

Unfamiliar Faces

5 Brett - Gotta work on those penalty shots if you want to be invited to Montreal. His team played most of game 1 with out it’s top player in Johnny. Yet Brett was still able to rally the troops and pull out a win in game 2 as he tipped in a very questionable goal at about crossbar height. Good thing there‘s no replay. Face-offs were much improved.

4 Dave - Thank goodness he hopped in net cause he wasn’t helping much on defense. Switching goalies and putting Dave in net was that spark the white team needed. With their scoring threat being depleted by Johnny being injured, their only hope of winning was good goaltending, and that’s just what they got. Maybe should be higher on the list, but WPR just can’t get that image of Dave’s give away out of his head.

3 Darrin - Wow! 2 goalies on 1 list?! Before his knee popped out, he was a brick wall. Darrin has improved each and every week he’s played. We may have found a goalie who can hold Johnny (injured or not) to a realistic goal total for the night. Health is the now the question for him.

2 Mike P - Mike filled in for Johnny pretty well as he was able to get open for Brett all night and was one of the main reasons the white team was able to pull out a win in game 2 with his 2 goals(one being a pretty one-handed goal). Most of his shots were at least on net and forced Darrin to make saves from every angle.

1 Jeremy - He must have been polishing his game for the past 3 years cause I saw no rust on him this past Sunday. Jeremy was the same player as he was in Florida, a shot blocking, turnover creating, out hustling, sliding maniac. Too bad he hates street hockey.

Honorable Mention:

Brendon - Once again he was thrown to the lions by being made to play defense. But yet again proved that he has improved his game in that aspect. Now, can he play defense while being an offense man?

Hey Brett, I just wanted to address on thing you said on the previous post. If we don't move out here, and instead we go back to Utah, that means that in the end of March/beginning of April we will be driving back. So there's a few hundred bucks. Then in April we will be planning and executing a move, renting a Uhaul, etc, so there's a few hundred more. Plus I'm going to be in a wedding in early June, so with tux rental and planning the bachelor party and whatnot there's more money going quickly. I'm not trying to play the sympathy card, I'm just trying to take a realistic viewpoint on this. It's much different if I'm already out here, but traveling for it is highly unlikely.

I would recommend pursuing the Darrin route. I'm not going to know if we're going to move back for another month or so, which doesn't help you guys. Plus, he's at (or near) the top of his game now. He played superbly on Sunday, and I'm kind of shocked he didn't make first on WPR's list, as I thought he was the standout reason dark team did well. Obviously I don't want to speak for him, as I don't know the extent of his knee injury, but he's a very impressive goalie.

I guess the other question I would have is, what about Tony? He seemed to be reasonably solid.

Brett said...

i'd bring a Darrin at 50% if that means i can play out and Ron comes along too.

Mike D said...

I'm out this week

Doing penalty shots would be a great idea for all penalties, but what will end up happening is a 10 minutes debate on weather or not it was a penalty or not

Who would call it?

If everyone called their own everyone has different tolerances for what they accept as "part of the game"

Their have been a bunch of times that Griff and I have gotten tangled up and we just generally keep playing or just say "hey you ok", but I know if I had the same type of tangle up with certain other people they'd react differently.

Not saying either one is right or wrong, just a wide range of acceptability which would make penalty calling inconsistant

Brett said...

plus i'm always available for an emergency situation if Darrin were to get hurt.

Brett said...

it'd only be the obvious trips. Not so much hooking or slashing. Just tripping pretty much

Brett said...

But Ron is realistic. and has shown interest for a while now about going to Montreal

Brett said...

oh no. people are going to be sorely disappointed when they see the speed of their shots.

Just let everyone think they can shoot it 90 mph

Brett said...

Brendon's gonna figure out some way to rig it so his shot is measured at about 100mph

Jared said...

Brendon is all about action! I love how he bought a radar gun, that'll be fun.

Brett any updates on darrin's interest? And Ron let's hear from you, are you a realistic option this year?

Anonymous said...

My guesses on slap shot power (top speeds):

Ron...91 mph (but only because of the Moustache Effect)
Dale...87 mph (he learned it in Hockey School)
Joe...84 mph (with a sliding start)
Brendon...84 mph (with a golf swing)
Jared...79 mph (but complaining the whole time about the teams)
Nick...78 mph (but misses the net)
Griff...78 mph (but slashes the radar gun)

I don't think any other regulars would top 75.

--Dave

Brett said...

i'm gonna say that ron is the only one who tops 80

Brett said...

and if dave is right about his predictions, then lets make sure Griff goes last

Ron said...

All of them guys will hit the 80's at least a couple times in 10 shots.

IMO their biggest issue is a lack of consistency. I've seen them all nail it once in a while.

Someone like Nick will hit barely break the highway speed limit on some shots, then lean into one for a respectful speed.

And Dave, don't be letting people know about my secret weapon :)

Brett said...

if some nhl players can barely hit 90 on a real radar gun(mike komisarek), what makes you think street hockey players can hit 90?

Mike D said...

anyone who has a consistantly high shot is not going to register big numbers even if they have a hard / fast shot

Don't mistake accurancy for power

Brett said...

and it's kinda funny, the people with the slowest shots(me johnny jared) are the ones who score the most. with the exception of Ron

So how valuable is a fast shot?

Mike D said...

If you shot a hockey ball from the blue line and puck from the blue line I would think the puck would sustain the speed longer.

The puck has less give than a ball and will react off your stick much quicker than a ball

Brett said...

less friction = more speed so as far as that logic goes you're wrong

Mike D said...

I'm wrong?

Brett said...

>if some nhl players can barely hit 90 on a real radar gun, what makes you think street hockey players can hit 90?

i'm sorry let me clarify:

What makes you think WE can hit 90 on a radar gun?

I wouldn't even consider us real street hockey players

Brett said...

no mike i was refering to brendon saying a more sticky surface would help.

I said in response that less friction = more speed.

Mike D said...

The actual act of taking a slapshot is the same, you should make contact with the ice / sport court about 6 to 8 inches (some say more) before you make contact with the ball / puck.

The power of a shot had more to do with the amount of tourque / bend you get in your stick and how accurately you release that tourque on the ball / puck

Brett said...

the ball is not more aerodynamic. that's why it curves and knuckles on every shot and a puck goes straight when shot correctly and stays flat

Mike D said...

I'm not talking about weight

I'm talking about what will obsorb the energy VS what will react to it better

You shoot a yellow ball VS an orange, which one can you generally shoot harder?
Most often - the orange
Why - because the yellow absords the energy because it's softer

same way even an orange ball is not generally going to have the same spring off a stick

Mike D said...

the ball will also curve because it has several axis's it can spin on and still move efficiently

a puck doesn't which is why if a puck isn't shot correctly it knuckles (end over end)

Brett said...

mike is correct

John said...

A couple of things:

1. Very few, if any, of us would crack 90 on a slapshot. At the Breakout tourney in RI Derek's best was 92 I believe, and Derek has what is probably the fastest slap shot I've ever seen. Ron's is pretty close though, so I'd put Ron anywhere between high 80s and low 90s.

2. Brendon, there is NO WAY that your shot reaches 90. If I had to guess I'd say low 80s tops (maybe 82).

3. My shot was clocked at 65 in that RI tourney...I'd be shocked if it has gotten any faster.

Mike D said...

brendon just so you know your example of pushing a piano VS pushing a stroller is not a transfer of kenetic energy it's momentum

Brett said...

brendons theories of physics are just as off as his theories on hockey

Brett said...

johnny what about brendon's gamewinner this past sunday? That was a rocket :)

Anonymous said...

*When he gets a hold of it*, Brendon has a VERY fast shot. It can score from the point. Usually it doesn't leave the ground, but it does have speed. It's also very inconsistent, but it has caught me off guard on enough occasions that it has to be acknowledged.

I agree that a puck will maintain speed better than a ball, as I believe air resistance will slow down a ball much faster than a puck. Objects in motion want to stay in motion, and the only thing stopping a slapshot is air resistance. Gravity ONLY brings it to the ground; it doesn't affect its speed. A puck is going to cut through the air much more effectively than a ball.

I also think it's harder to get a high speed with a puck than with a ball. I clocked in the 80's in that RI tournament, and I believe it was at 85. I can't do nearly that with a puck. Granted, I tore my hamstring and can't shoot nearly as fast now. But there are guys in Saugus who can shoot faster than I ever could.

Ron, sorry to give away your secret. Perhaps if you're bound by new ropes that have never been used then you will be powerless.

--Dave

Nick said...

stats are up

Brett said...

the reviews said it's pretty easy to use and set up

Brett said...

Brendon what shape has more air resistance going forward = or O

The puck, if shot like this [] would have more air resistance but if shot like this = would have less.

Usually you try to shoot a puck like this =

referring to daves point of not being able to shot the puck as fast as the ball, that all about technique. The ball is way easier to shoot than a puck.

It'd be hilarious to see us play with a puck in saugus. very few would even get it off the groud with their shot. i can get it off the ground only about 50% with my slap shot. Would revert to only using wrist and snap shots. We use to use the street puck all the time in Braintree.

Darrin said...

the hockey ball is a goalie's worst enemy because of the amount of curving it does when shot. on fast shots a goalies best bet is just to play good positional goaltending and try to anticipate where its going to curve.
The puck is the best.
Also, whenever i played out, i always found my shot to be faster with the puck

Mike D said...

I wasn't going to start quoting physics, but since you did...

yes momentum is p = mv which is Product (momentum) = mass x velocity,Volume, or speed ( I forget which)

Pushing something is not kinetic energy. In physics this is called -Work which is when force is used to move an object from point A to point B (Pushing or Pulling)
W=FD (work = forcexdistance)

Kinettic energy is K = 1/2mv^2

The transfer of Kinetic energy has in large part with an object ability to store & then release the transfered energy, this is directly related to an objects mass
or on density

when you hit a puck it can store the energy acrosss its surface as well as into its core unlike a hollow hockey ball which can only store the energy on its surfaces

if you take 2 softballs a regular ball and a red dot, which one can you hit farther?
the red dot- why? even though both have same surface area & mass the red dot has more density which doesn't allow the stored kinetic energy past the mid point of the object this giving it great "kick" off the bat thus a greater transfer of kinetic energy

i love mike right now.

I'm like the invisible man. I wasn't even mentioned in the team line ups. Did I even play last Sunday? Anyway, I disagree with Nick. alot happened that should have been noted about game 3. Some good players on both teams left before the game started and I was traded to the dark team. Brett was tripped for the 3 or 4th time during the game. Brett beat me on a face-off, took a quick shot and scored just after he had missed on a penalty shot against his brother after he was tripped (again) on a breakaway. The white team had a shut-out going (3-0) until I was fortunate enough to score the only goal our team got and It was on a break away after their goalie made a sprawling save on my initial shot, but, couldn't recover in time for the rebound. Then time ran out on us. Other then that, nothing happened, right, Nick!

Brett said...

i would love to play with a street hockey puck. Yeah that's why we switched to the ball too.

Yes bring it. atleast we can shoot around with it in practice

Nick said...

dale, how would you know? You werent there!

I crack myself up.

Nick said...

griff, thats why I dont do line-ups, I forget people.

Though, i was shocked you had the jared in there.

Mike D said...

you're completely missing the point

There are several factors that go into the effective transfer of Kinetic energy, one of which is weight, but it's not the most important.

A very important one is what it's actually made of

Your example does show how an extremely difference in weight would effect the transfer of energy, but do you know why?

if you had a bowling ball, marble, & a bat used a person to swing the bat this is what kinetically would happen.

the person would be the force (F) that would genererate the work (w) that would gernerate the momemtum (P) that would move the bat (A) from point A to point B. If the marble was in the path of movement it would not significantly affect momentum thus allowing the transfer of energy. The bowling ball on the other hand would almost completely stop the momentum, the kinetic energy would actually be giving back to the bat causing the bat to stop or move backward - this is called retransfer

If you used a machine that could gernerate enought force to an object hard enough that could move the bowling ball just 3 feet, do you know how far it would move the marble? 0 feet - it would shatter it because marbles are made of glass

If you took a hockey ball and a golf ball and shot them with a stick, which one will go faster?
A hockey ball isn't more than mabey160 grams and a official golf ball can't be more than 1.6 ounces

or even used a marble half the weight, which would go further?

Using your theory that weight is the most important factor the hockey ball should go faster, but it won't - why because of how it accepts the transfer of Kinetic energy do to what it's made of

Same thing with a puck

Ask one of our goalies if you could shout a golf ball at them. They would most like so no.

Mike D said...

don't mistake my lack of execution on a slapshot for lack of knowledge on how it works.. ;-)

Brett said...

no Brendon, he went to color school

Your best bet is to somehow attach one of those laser pointers you get from staples to the gun so you can get a rough idea of where you actually pointing it

John said...

Thanks. My back is still feeling pretty lousy...the old guy from the Six Flags commercials can probably walk faster than me right now.

Brett said...

Someone just stand behind the net and aim it through the net at the shooter shooting the ball.

Brett said...

well then i guess nick can't try it then. I'm sure we'll all be able to hit the net atleast once

That's how the nhl does it. From behind the net.

Also just a reminder: the lower the shot the faster it goes

Brett said...

it's physics :)
