If you can't take the heat...

This past week was a first for the season: we played with the orange balls. Of course, with the temperature in the 80s they were probably somewhere between the yellow and pinks in regard to softness. But, at least we didn't have to worry about people slipping (or falling into puddles, right Lenny?)

The captains for this past week were Jared and Brett. Jared decided to pick first and went with Darrin. The way the teams ended up at first:
Jared's team (dark): Jared, Mike W, Griff, Steve P, Steve's cousin Bob, Brad, Darrin (G).
Brett's team (white): Brett, John, Nick, Matt D, Andrew, Cindy, Steve F (G).

We say that's how the teams started because we had an unexpected player show up. Fortunately it wasn't Billy or Mike D since they had their assembly. Anybody want to guess who it was? That's right - Brendon. Doing some math...his grandmother's memorial talk was at 2, he showed up at 3:15...he either left early, or ripped his suit off Clark Kent style to reveal his Martino # 86 Alliance jersey. Either way I hope she wasn't one of the annointed Brendon! All joking aside, it was nice to have you there this past week...well except for games 2 & 3.

So with Brendon joining the forces of good (I'm referring to the White team Reggie), a swap was made of Brad and Matt D. Game 1 was a 5-0 shutout for the White team. They had three different players with two points...guess who? Andrew (2 g), Brett (1g, 1a) and of course Riley (2 a). However, that is not our beloved protagonist (don't look it up Brad, it means hero) John that we are talking about. Cindy had 2 assists. John did have the gamewinner though so it was happy times for all.

Game 2 started out great for the White team, who had a sizable lead early with goals from Andrew, Brett, and John (2). However, Jared pulled out his secret weapon for his team: heavy complaining followed by a good helping of cheating. Yes, after Jared complained again about the team that he picked, there was a minor dispute over who shot the ball out of play. What followed was Griff just firing the ball down the rink during the stoppage in play and Nick telling Griff that he wasn't going to retrieve it. Suddenly Mike W runs down the rink, gets the ball, and scores on Steve. And, you guessed it: Jared counted it for his team. Even though we weren't even playing at the time, we had a big lead and allowed it to count just to keep Jared quiet. I mean, it's not like we were going to lose, right? Bad mistake on our part as the dark team rallied behind 3 goals from Jared and pulled off the win.

The dark team took it again to the white team in Game 3 due to some horrendous defensive play by the White team (not that we did much on offense either). The only highlight for the White team was Cindy's third assist, a perfect pass on a one-timer to our beloved protagaonist (which means what again Brad?). Speaking of Brad, there was debate over where he was for this game. Some say he was benched in favor of Cindy who played most of Game 3. Insiders say though that Brad sectioned himself off with yellow security tape and took a nap on the bench. The dark team won on a "slap shot" that Jared took from the Tobin. Steve said it was just too slow for him to stop. End result: 5-2 win for the dark team, a 2-1 lead in games, and lots of yelling by me.

Ah, but then came Game 4. 5-0 win by the White team, finished off by John a one-timer on a perfect feed from Nick.

Other Notes:

It was weird how it broke down: 2 5-0 shutouts for the White team surrounding two losses to the dark team. It was definitely hot, but manageable...and no puddles. Andrew was as bi-polar as our team, playing either very well, or awful. Maybe the injury he got walking into the rink (literally) affected him at times...Some great play by Darrin, especially one very nice glove save. Steve was pretty solid as well, that one terrible goal aside. I'll have the stats for Nick later today, but the scoring leaders roughly were:

John - 7g, 3a
Brett - 3g, 4a
Jared - 5g, 1a
Steve P - 6a

HOT HOT HOT

5 Cindy - I don't think I've ever seen anyone get yelled at for setting someone else up with a perfect pass for an easy goal, never mind being yelled at by the person you just gave the perfect pass to. Yet, Johnny was able to find some fault with Cindy's perfect pass to him for the goal. Well Cindy i hope you keep passing, there's too many selfish players at Saugus as it is. 3 assists is nothing to be ashamed of.

4 Darrin - If you looked at the goals Darrin gave up you might think WPR has gone crazy for putting him at 4. But if you look at what happened just before the goals were scored then you'd see that it was his defense that was the problem all night. 3/4 Of the goals that were scored by the White team shouldn't even have been opportunities for them, never mind goals. The soft defensive play by ALL on the dark team, left Darrin out to dry. He did make a game saving save in Game 2 on Johnny and that's why he's 4th this week.

3 Brett - His passes were as crisp as I've seen all year. Rather than just look for Johnny all game long, Brett has been able to widen his view of the ice and incorporate all of his teammates regardless of their skill level.

2 Jared - Definitely has the most goals from center ice or beyond. This winger believes in his shots from half ice, and why not? He's scored from that distance on many occasions this season alone. My question, is what will happen to his attitude in Montreal if his team gets behind by 3 goals? Will his attitude become rotten like it did this past Saturday for games 1 and 4? Or will he be resolved to not give up on the team he has like he did in games 2 and 3?

1 Johnny - Continues to put distance between himself and Jared for the Rocket Richard trophy as this winds down. The chemistry between him and Brett should prove to be a force up in Montreal. Hopefully crossing the border doesn't change anything.

One additional correction...according to the stats, Cindy had 4 assists. If she gets 2 more points she overtakes Billy D for the 25th spot in points.

Brendon, to answer your question: we met at my house on Sunday to discuss Montreal. I had thought I mentioned to you about that to show up, but in any event it looks like we have our team set for MTL.

Goalie: Darrin
Forwards: John, Brett, Jared, Ron
Defense: Nick, Mike W

Some other people like Griff and Matt D are planning on going just to hang out.

We did not get a chance to really discuss Moncton or Ottawa. We might be doing one of those tourneys, and we'd need to see who would be able to make it for that trip (towards the end of June). Not sure who of us can make that trip, but it's likely we will need another player or two if we do that tourney. So Brendon, check the site for the dates of Moncton or Ottawa, and let me know if you have any plans on those weekends.

John said...

Actually, now that I realize that Moncton is the first weekend of June, that'd be tough...we would have Montreal, our District Convention, and then Moncton. Ottawa would be better, and a shorter drive, but we might have our CO that weekend.

The only other possibility would be Toronto, but that would be up in the air for me since I am not sure how Jamie will be feeling by then.

Brett said...

toronto would be awesome. Ottawa is a pretty big city being the capital of Canada and all, so i'm sure there's something to do there. Pretty sure if it has atleast one bar then we have something to do.

Brett said...

Ron has confirmed many times that he's in. both this past party and also to jared since then. I have complete confidence in Ron. We need him in my opinion.

John said...

Brendon, I'll do a records page. I just didn't have time to put it together today. I'm aiming for sometime this week.

Ron confirmed to both Jared and Brett (as Brett said above) and I think he even did it in English to Jared.

I do think Toronto would be an absolute blast, but for that one I might have to wait till next year.

Brett said...

johnny you have till 2 weeks before the due date to go on trips. I did and so can you. when's the due date?

And you can also play hockey the same night as the due date. It said so in parenting magazine.

Brett said...

well we'd have mike d maybe and other people. why not just do ottawa with who ever wants to go. I'll be goalie for that trip. Or maybe Tony would go. Maybe eric will be able to go also

John said...

Brett, Ottawa would still more than likely be a possiblity for me. Toronto would almost definitely not be since Jamie is supposed to have a C-section toward the end of July and will need help at home for most of August.

Brett said...

oh i thought she was due at the end of august.

And brendon why would eric be such a stretch in your mind? he wanted to go to montreal.

Mike D, would u be willing to go to ottawa?

Brett said...

how bout griff or matt davis? Mike W would u go to ottawa too?

Brett said...

nick are you up for 2 trips?

Mike D said...

My going to any tourney is dependent on 2 things.

First being $$$ - I got laid off about a month ago and I am still not working

Second being how I'm feeling, I haven't been well most of the year and felt really lousy, I'm finally feeling better now

So if those 2 things are good, I'd go pretty much anywhere

Brett said...

mike let me let you in on a little secret.............running your hand through a saw only hurts for like a week. It's totally worth it. plus you can sell any extra pain meds to help pay for the trip.

Mike D said...

well seeing that the lovely company that let me go is saying I quit and up in NH they won't let you collect if you quit, so I'm fighting that now.

If this drags on and I'm still not working I just might have to mangle a limb.. lol

Brett said...

BTW does everyone just want their first names on the back of the team shirts for montreal? or Last names? or Ittles?

Jared said...

"Captain" for my shirt.

Johnny i can't believe you side with nick when he pouted and didn't get the ball when griff dumped it in to him. We waited atleast 5 seconds, and we all agree there's too much arguing so someone just play the ball! Maybe nick shouldn't play tough guy with the other team!

And WPR, if we get down 3 goals my goal will be to just not ruin my stick. Brendon, your worried about boredom in another city? I'm sure you can count our beers wherever we go, that should keep you humored.

John said...

Jared, none of us were playing it, obviously it shouldn't have been a goal...but at the time I really didn't care too much (didn't think you guys had any chance to come back).

Mike, sorry to hear about the job - I didn't know. I'll keep on the lookout for you.

Brett, I'll do either first or last name, it doesn't matter.

Jared said...

Uh Johnny...

Mike actually missed on that initial shot, it went behind the net, then i grabbed it, ran around with everyone back playing, threw it in front and mike tipped it in with nick back covering him. You all were back playing! You simply just play a lazy center position in an attempt to get more points offensively. Don't pretend you weren't playing.

Brett said...

i yelled play it before any player on the dark team touched it. It was a good goal in my eyes

John said...

I never moved on that play since I didn't think we were playing it. Hey, we counted it, I'm not complaining about it, and we still should have won that game anyway so it's not the reason we lost, but admit it - it was a cheap play.

But Jared...do you really want to be the one to comment on someone else's defensive play?

Mike D said...

Thanks John

It seems like it happens almost every week that one team gets a goal and parts of the other team aren't ready.

Mike D said...

Brendon, thanks for the info

This whole process is really trying my patience!!

Nick said...

sorry guys havent been around. Stats are up...

Mike D said...

You can rush one in 7 days for a full passport

You can get one like Jared / Brett did last year (license style) in one day in Boston - I think

Mike D said...

From what I remember when I had to rush mine for a business trip it was like an extra $50.

I believe they give you the license style when you're there and then mail you your full passport, Jared & Brett would know better

I'm sure Mike & Darrin are well aware that they need passports to go to Canada....

stevep said...

Bruins Sabres tonight... GO BRUINS!

Brett said...

Brendon, stop being so concerned about a tournament you weren't invited to. We don't need you debby downer input on the tournament and travel plans.

You can get a passport in 3-5 weeks without rushing. or a passcard on the same day of travel if need be.

Brendon we all know your bitter about not being needed for this tournament nor for any future tournaments except maybe to be a body on the court so our good players can catch their breath.

WPR isn't suppose to start controversy. He gives an accurate assesment of the past week. You stuck at doing the rankings.

Brett said...

Brendon, how does it feel to lose out on the final spot for montreal to someone who's only been back to hockey for 3 weeks?

John said...

Oh good, I see we're back to creating controversy.

As I told Brendon before, we were planning possibly two different trips. The first one we have a full roster for. But the second one we're not sure yet. Chances are there will be spots open there, and Brendon and I have discussed that already.

BTW, you can't create controversey going into the weekend :)

Brett said...

how mad will John be when he gets his jersey and there isn't a "C" on the front.

And pretty sure we can scrounge up any amount of players for the second trip.

Maybe we can catch a playoff game in Montreal, you know, cause montreal is going to the finals and everything

John said...

Brett, why would I be mad? That doesn't bother me in the least. I am much more vocal in Saugus than I am playing in tourneys, so if somebody else wants to wear the C it doesn't bother me at all.

Brett said...

i didn't say you weren't getting a letter. it just won't be an A or a C

John said...

Either way, not a big deal.

Brett said...

i think i'm getting "AAC" on my left shoulder. Assistant to the Assistant Captain.
