Seems like some really poor defense was bein played.... in almost every clip of the goals being scored someone was trailing the forward on the other team.

Here's the Professor's take on the action. Can only go by the spy satellites, as the official tapes haven’t been made available yet.

Darrin- Played up to expectations, which were very high. The team had great confidence that when the balls came in on him, they would be stopped. The only exception was the very first goal of the tournament:) After that he played great and made some clutch saves. He also controlled rebounds and covered the ball when the heat was on.

1st Line Offense- Played up to expectations, which were high. They put on a show in the middle games, which was impressive. The forwards need to trust the shot more, as there were times when the pass should have been a shot. Nick's game strength was on display when the other team tried to break out with Nick on the point. More often than not, Nick broke them up and kept the ball in the offensive zone. Johnny and Brett played great together and scored the bulk of the tournaments goals.

2nd Line Offense- Played above expectations, except for Ron. Mike W was able to provide grit and hustle that was instrumental in the lines success. Jack's transition game was also key in creating lots of scoring bids. I was told when Ron was mentally preparing himself for the trip, he envisioned using his slap shot. As a result, Ron was called on 2 slap shots… Doh! Those penalties both lead to goals from the resulting penalty shots. Ron was expected to produce on offense and took advantage of opportunities for the most part, the sticky ball was frustrating at times.

1st Line Defense- Played below expectations. Don’t have the official stats, but got a sense that much more than 50% of the opposing teams goals were scored on the 1st line. That dreaded final goal was a real downer. The bright spot was the in game adjustments as Brett often rotated back when Nick pinched in deep. Worth noting was the good hustle coming back from the forwards which proved to be huge neutralizing their scoring threats.

2nd Line Defense- Played at expectations. Not everyone was sold on Jacks defensive zone skills, expect for the recruiter. High risk or huge reward were the words being tossed out before the trip. Jack showed good poise with the ball behind our net, firing the ball out to Ron on the opposite end. If Jack would of made adjustments in game 4, the outcome might have been different. In game 4 the other teams D and Goalie took away what we were doing all tournament.

i'm working on those +/- numbers for you PPP. I think you're gonna be surprised at the numbers

John said...

Darrin, Brett can put that video together simply because we have no video of all the goals scored against him last year!

"PPP" the Professor said...

The days of me being surprised are long gone.

However, it is possible that my eyebrow is raised.

i tried to rip brendons dvd to my computer to edit it, but can't do it. need more software

Brett said...

Ron's "high stick" was the most ridiculous call. There were legit above the head wind ups from other teams players that weren't called

"PPP" the Professor said...

Why didn't you put that disclaimer on the top.

i have an eye twitch now and I'm choking on every drink of iced coffee since reading that post.

Brett said...

ummmm...... i agree with almost everything Brendon just said.

Now, i'm gonna proof read it to make sure cause i can't believe i agree so much with his prognosis of the team, but as of right now he nailed it. Especially the description of Jack's play

Brett said...

yup, he's right on.

Gonna try and ref for the tournament in Ottawa or Toronto this year.

Jared you could have reffed

Darrin said...

Brett you're dead for posting this.

But thanks for putting it in fast motion so I at least appeared faster.

Brett said...

i put it in fast motion cause there were so many

Johnny, I blew my coverage? It's like you're telling the cops about the candy bar I stole and you have chocolate all over your face!

Sure I could have played the play differently but the only reason I left my guy was because someone else let THEIR GUY get behind them. I tried to compensate...it didnt work. I should have stopped the play, no doubt in my mind. I have broken up plays like that hundreds of times. Im not going to make an excuse, I should have stopped it, however Im not the only one that could have done something differently. To pin that entire play on me is not justifiable. You can make bad plays too. You dont have to have an excuse for every mistake you have.

Like I said, this should be moot, I should have broken up the play. The play is on me, but dont think for one second that you played it correctly. You didnt.

Moving on...

Brett said...

no let's not move on. You don't have to stop the play nick, if Johnny is on his guy. In the video, johnny backs up into no-mans land while their guy heads in the opposite direction johnny is going.

We were playing a zone defense right?

John said...

Nick, stop being so defensive. I've been the one saying all along not to take the last goal too hard. I said blown coverage as a throwaway line, I didn't mean anything by it.

Technically you "blew" your coverage since you weren't on the guy that scored. Even if it was a two on one you have to give the goalie the shooter and take the pass away. So from that sense it was a "blown" play. Even more so by the fact that I angled the ball carrier off...he couldn't get to the net. His only play there was to shoot it into Darrin, or pass it across.

But it wasn't an easy play, and I'll take responsibility of the other guy sneaking behind me in the first place. To be honest, I don't remember anything about the play except for trying to run and catch up to the guy and trying to block him from shooting. I saw video from Brendon where I was in the middle and he went running past on the side and then I try to catch up. I don't know if Brett has a better camera angle of the play or not.

In any event, I wasn't trying to throw you under the bus by saying it was a blown play. I was typing quickly this morning, and that was the easiest thing to type (I forgot I even typed it). Sorry if you read it that way.

John said...

Nick, btw, I was not even trying to comment on that play this morning...my point was on one of the first goals that they scored with what seemed to be a lazy clear. And my point on that was not to berate you, but simply point out we need to bear down more next time and try to eliminate those types of goals.

Brett said...

OK! OK! here come the replay of that goal. Johnny, this clip does you no justice.

Johnny he got the pass off. He got around you and he shouldn't have.

It's both your faults equally. Nick shouldn't have had to stop the pass if you had stayed with your guy.

Nick said...

bring it on!

Nick said...

"Nick, stop being so defensive."

sigh...

John said...

I'm curious to see the video later Brett when you make me a copy. I don't remember how or why he got by me, but like I said, if I was the guy back then he shouldn't have gotten by.

Brett said...

Nick has reason to be defensive when your blaming about 80% of the losing goal on him. Maybe 90%. and 7% on Darrin.

John said...

Nick, no need to sigh...I'm simply saying that you read it differently than I intended.

John said...

Brett, do you have reading comprehension problems? When did I ever say that I blamed Nick (or put a percentage on it). In fact, on the ride home Nick and I had talked about it and I told him not to worry about it - it wasn't an easy play.

You were the one that I recall mentioning that Nick was a scapegoat seconds after the game.

Nick said...

nick being defensive is ironic because I play defense...sigh.

Brett said...

no the percentages were just my guess as to how you would split up the blame.

You told him not to worry about it?

So was it his fault? Yes it was he admitted it. Whether you told him to worry about it or not you still think it's his fault.

Nick was my scapegoat right after the play. I didn't wait till after the game

John said...

No, I had told him just what I said here: he played it wrong. He always has to take away the pass.

But I told him not to worry about it since he shouldn't have been in that situation.

Percentages? Probably Nick 60%, me 40%, Darrin 0%.
