johnny we were playing zone defense all tournament and this one time you want me to follow the guy? Where were you backing up to anyway? you just starting backing away from him for no reason and then tried to catch up but were to slow. I knew you'd blame me somehow.
The more i see it i say 60% johnny 40% Nick. If johnny doesn't wander the player never gets behind him to make the pass
Hey Brett, settle down. I blamed you just to get you going.
Like I said, the only part of the play I remember is chasing after the guy and trying to stop him from getting to the net. Looking at the video, I'm thinking I backed up to take away the passing lane in the middle of the rink, and was a bit too slow realizing that he was cutting to the net.
That being said, I recovered in time to limit his options and take away the shot. Knowing how the play turned out I would obviously have done it differently, but what happened, happened.
Chris, that's just how Brett is. Word is that he made his brother walk home barefoot after a couple of soft goals in game 1, but we made sure that Darrin got to the rink.
I figured you won Brett! I knew you had it in you! Too bad you had to get locked up with the rest of those guys.LOL
Seriously, it seems like you all had fun!!! I used to play in Hoop it up Basketball Tournaments. Great Competition and lots of fun, especially when you win!!
I should be getting some hoop in soon, John I will let you know. I think I will see you on sunday, I will be in Portland! Brett, I think we have the same District Convention, July 16-18?? Hope to see you !
john why try to get me going if all your gonna do is say settle down after?
So you thought you needed to cover Nicks guy with him? Were you trying to bait him into rushing the puck and then thought you could steel it? Sounds like a brendon play:)
You looked a bit tired trying to catch up to him.
By the way if he was able to pass the ball, then he could have gotten the shot off too. Maybe you meant to say you made him take a worse angle than he wanted. If you took away the shot then Darrin wouldn't have had to play the shot. but he did.
And Nick if you were playing it like a 2 on 1, why weren't you in between the 2 players? your guy was out in front of the net. you were kinda standing next to Darrin, your guy being out of reach. Did you get caught watching the ball?
Like I said, I don't remember the start of the play, just trying to chase the guy down. I am going to guess that I expected him to pass the puck, or shoot it down the rink, and I wanted to take the middle away from him. And yes, he could still shoot if he wanted to, but Darrin would have had it covered. Kind of like when a guy gets a partial breakaway, and as the back-checker you try to force him to one side of the net. His only legit scoring option was to pass it across IMO.
Brendon, I didn't comment on your observation simply because I didn't feel like wasting time debating it. Overall I thought Ron's analysis was pretty spot on, except for the first line's defense (I don't think we allowed too many goals). That being said I'd probably say Brett was our best player overall in the tourney, but it wasn't as huge a gap over the rest of the team as it was in his mind. Ron was our best player in game 1, Brett in game 2, myself in game 3, and Darrin in game 4 (Brett being 2nd). I think you rank Jack way too low. Was he perfect? No, but he played very well.
We can look at making some tweaks to Saugus, and I agree with Darrin that we can make the basis of the teams the two teams that will be going up to MTL (and then add the other players in appropriately). But it's not the structure of the games that make MTL special - it's the fact you are playing for something. You can't just manufacture that type of atmosphere in a non-tourney setting.
But Brett, I'd most likely be in for a summer league providing the play is very clean like MTL. I don't want it how things ended up in Friday night Tewksbury.
In July i could probably start playing again (prob not at 100% but close). Ron or Jack, are you interested in a league? Darrin, could you play every Monday or Wednesday? Griff? Brendon? Mike D? Nick? Will Borges be back?
I'm in for sure. Jared did just get his knee brace, so he's a 75% chance.
Can we get 9 guys or so and a goalie to commit to one night a week?
here are the stats for all 4 games. I know some people are gonna doubt it and say that they miraculously remember every goal and assist they had. But i watched the videos 3 times each. Each time focusing on a different stat. So here they are.
I guess you should get the goal cause there isn't conclusive evidence on either video. I just remember tipping it. But you can have it. i have plenty to share. Anyone else want one?
if you watch the video of game 3 john, on the 3rd goal i'm behind the ref. But like i said hard to tell from the video.
There were a bunch of plays like that where i couldn't really tell what happened. Kinda had to use my best judgment on some saves Darrin made and things like that. So i guess the stats aren't perfect but they're pretty darn close
no cause Jacks goal in game 2 wasn't counted by the ref so i didn't count it.
YOu had 17 goals for that game, minus Jack goal that wasn't counted makes it 16. ref thought it was off the crossbar....he seemed to have a problem determining if shots hit the crossbar or went in. atleast 3 time
Have a nice weekend guys...I'll be away at the convention so I won't be online much. BTW, Nick has the stats already from our last week in Saugus so they should be up when he's back next week. Weird to think it was already a week ago that we were planning to leave for MTL.
Anyway, I should be starting the season awards next week. See you then.
wow.. smh... that has to have been the worst defense ive seen.. but alot of it has to do with the camera angle.. Johnny loks horrible in that play. especially backing up 5 steps to what i dont know. and then getting beat by a guy using one hand on his stick. Soo... bad. But i didnt see the entire rink.. was there someone behing him he was back pedaling to keep a pass from getting too? And where was nick? i heard him get yelled at but didnt see what area he was covering until too late. So to me its the CAMERA CHICK'S FAULT!! lol..
no reggie you described it just how it happened. Nick had his guy, then when Johnny got beat, nick started to try and compensate and left his man open for the onetimer
Hey guys...on the ride home from Montreal Brett said that the last goal against us was 100% totally his fault for not keeping up with his guy but that he'd never admit it to you.
I only deal in reality Brendon, but recognize that fantasies exist, for instance the fantasy that you use a regular sized hockey stick so you can at least look the part of a real hockey player. Jk :)
Every year we've just tried to take the most talent that has been willing to go. Year 1 Florida was a shock the first game we played and we went 3-0 during qualifying round. But that's when our talent took over and we started winning and made it to the final.
Montreal year 1 had a lot to do with chance, and certain players playing out of their mind to compensate for others. We never really had a chance no matter what nick said.
This year we were overconfident, stubborn and lazy mentally. We were way better than every other team and still lost
5 Jack’s Stubbornness - Brett: "Jack, keep it down”. Ron: “Jack, keep it low”. You’d think that by the end of the first half after his long shot/dumps consistently got picked off or covered, that he’d switch up his tactics. Nope.
4 Brendon - I don’t know what the ref was more annoyed with, the fact that their goalie covered EVERYTHING, or that Brendon kept acting like he was the coach and complained about every little play or everything that he thought the ref should have called.
3 Johnny - Johnny is top scorer in Saugus. He even thinks he’s the best player over everyone that plays at Saugus. He thinks he’s more skilled in almost every attribute than anyone else. Where was that “skill” in game 4? He seemed to be content with his shallow goals in games 2 and 3.
2 Rookie Ref - Could he have been biased because the alliance were from the states? Sure seemed like it. Questionable calls and non calls in game 4 alone and a missed goal.
1 Jared - Jared picks up Johnny’s slack if he doesn’t blow out his acl and gives the Alliance that 3rd scoring threat that they thought they had going in to the tournament. Just like year 1 Montreal, 2 players can’t carry a team to the finals.
Okay Brett, so you opened this can of worms, but why wouldn't that be the case in Saugus? Who are you going to make a case for? I think the sample size is plenty big enough. And Saugus based, while I think we play best together, if I had to pick the 2nd best Saugus player it's Jared. He has to play on his own far more than you do (in fact, I believe the only time you've played alone against Jared and I was a year and a half ago when my back was hurt and you had Dave. I would still rather play with you since you cover defensively and our styles mesh together so well, but as of now Jared gets the nod.
Attribute wise, I've never said I'm better than anyone else. In fact, if you look at my "NHL 10" style attributes last year there are plenty of people that are ahead of me in different categories.
I've got good speed though not the fastest player, good size/strength, very good wrist shot and stickhandling. My slapshot is obviously very poor, and what holds me back from being more dominant. As a result I have to work harder than most.
My best attribute is hockey sense though: knowing where to be, how to get open, and the vision to see the play happen. That's what makes up for my lack of top end skill in certain other areas.
Now, let's take this to MTL. Brett, you were our best player overall in this tourney. But, you could have done more. You had some poor passes which blew a couple of scoring chaces for us. You scored two goals in about 30 seconds, and then didn't score again. Since we lost, you have responsibility in that with the rest of the team.
In MTL, it wasn't a case where you were excellent and everyone else was terrible. You were very good, some of us were simply good. Last year Jared and I were both very good. I didn't play my best in Game 4, but neither did anyone else (including you). You might have been better, but not good enough to win.
But don't worry, because now you've opened yourself up to be ripped the next time your play tails off.
And btw, just in case it sounds like I'm angry right now, I'm not (can't be angry at the convention can you?). I think it's just time for a balanced viewpoint.
Well, actually I'm a little upset the Celtics are winning (wanted the Bruins not to be the only team to blow a 3-0 lead). But that's not affecting my writing right now :)
John you biggest criticism of me is that i scored 2 goals in a minute and couldn't score after? You couldn't score in 30 minutes once. You had more terrible passes than me in that game. Are you really blaming me for you not scoring? Are you really that dependent on other players to set you up?
Where was that stick-handling in Montreal? And don't blame the ball cause Ron and me were able to manage just fine.
And Johnny i get to have 4 bad tournaments just like you before i start to get ripped. I'll just blame it on no one setting me up or maybe i'll just focus on defense next time....oh wait those excuses are taken.
And so you do think your the best even though you could be givien the same criticism as me? and you played verse players of lesser talent and goalies of lesser talent.
Johnny face it, you're good verse lesser players(game 2&3 in montreal and all years of Saugus) but verse good talent you fade.
Sorry Brett, never had 4 bad tourneys so just keep making that up.
BTW, game 1 was against a lousy team too. We should have crushed that team. We only faced 1 very good team. So your argument comes down to two goals that you scored in game 4 (one of which I setup for you) against a good team.
Go back and read what I said: you played better than me in game 4. Overall you had a better tournament. But it's been 5 days now how all of your teammates blew it for you. Sorry, that's crap. If you were so good, you could have gotten us another goal when we needed it. You were not on this whole other level than everyone else.
Nice try trying to bait me into coming off super conceited on the site. If we're talking Saugus, I think the 4 years of numbers, and the way the other team game plans to cover me speaks for itself. I am not going to downgrade anyone else.
That being said Saugus plays to my strengths. Just cause I dominate in Saugus, doesn't mean I expect to dominate if every other hockey game I play. Take some of the same players on teams we play against though and I do expect to outperform them though if we play them in Saugus.
Anyway, gotta get to bed for the night. I'm sure having all day tomorrow will give you plenty of time to try to formulate your argument...just try using facts this time.
John stop thinking you setting me up on that goal was anything special, it wasn't.
And game 1 was a lousy team which makes you look even worse. Why would you even make that point?
Not all my teammate blew it for me. Just you nick and Jack.
See johnny that's the difference between me and you. I know my downfalls and weaknesses. Someone needs to tell you. And when they do you don't believe them and you make absurd excuses as to why it's so.
And finally, so you do think you're the best in Saugus.
Brett, stop rambling like a fool. You aren't making any sense.
As I said before (try to read it again so that you can understand): yes I'm the best one in Saugus. Stats aren't everything, but the numbers aren't even close. Again, that doesn't mean that I think I'm going to be the best player in every tourney I play in (between style of play and small sample sizes). But in Saugus, yes, I think the evidence speaks for itself. And while Saugus is not the same as playing tournament style hockey, I apparently have a little bit more respect for people's games in Saugus than you do.
My point about game 1 is that you are cherry picking your games you want to try to rip me about (can't play against the hard teams). Game 1 was not against a hard team. Game 4 was the only "hard" team that we faced. You had two goals. Wow, you're awesome. Post the video of the first one, because no matter how much you want to deny it, you don't score there without me stealing the ball and passing it to you (from where you shot it where you stood).
And enough about the bad tournaments. This year and last year were not bad tournaments. If I had bad tournaments in Florida then so did you. So that's what, 2 out of 3 bad tournaments for you?
And let me just close with this: I like playing with you, but you have been a terrible teammate. That is all you've done is try to rip everyone on the team to try to make yourself look better.
There you go again, unable to see how you stunk up the rink for another tournament. Johnny you can have all the stats you want in Saugus cause they amount to jack squat. Keep thinking you played decent in any tournament besides last year and you'll continue to have bad tournaments and maybe even find yourself on the outside looking in because you were unwilling to see your own faults, too stubborn to make changes, and too proud to listen to criticism.
I said stats in regard to Saugus. I did not have a bad tournament. If this was a "bad" tournament for me, Nick, or Jack, then you were simply mediocre.
And as far as being on the outside looking in, well let's see...I'm sure Nick and Jack will both be with me, and I'm sure Ron will want to play with Jack. Jared, I'm not sure who he will want to play with, but I'll have Borges so I'm sure Jared will want to play with us.
We'll need a goalie for sure, but I'm not so sure Darrin will be on your side after you continued to rip his play.
You didn't have many passes that made it to me in game 4. We've covered that.
Brett, I'm done talking about this with you. Everybody has said, including myself, that you were our best player in the tournament this year. I think most of us played pretty well though. Personally I think that I played good overall (not outstanding, but good), but definitely could have been better in game 4.
Yet for the second year in a row you decide to attack your teammates repeatedly in the week after the tourney. It's classless, and it's being a lousy teammate, because again, we win or lose as a team, not as individuals. We had a disappointing finish for sure, but everyone should be focused on the fun that we had playing together, and what we can do better for next time.
In the meantime, if you want to keep debating your or my performance either shoot me an email or call me...no need to bore everyone else with these details.
Besides, this week I'm going to start on the end of year awards, and on Tuesday propose an excellent idea that Billy Thomas gave to me at the convention today.
[Johnny]In the meantime, if you want to keep debating your or my performance either shoot me an email or call me...no need to bore everyone else with these details.
In my opinion this is not boring, it's down right embarrassing.

i like how you added John's turn over right after...lol
Brett, I wish you had a better angle...you guys were late to the party on that goal. If only Ariel was as good as Brendon with the camera.
Brett, you have it all wrong. This is why the play went wrong:
54.666666667% on Nick
"Nick blew his coverage on winning goal for them"
12.333333333% on John's sleeping issues
"The hardest part of the tourney for me is not getting much sleep the night before"
8.5% on being nervous
"being nervous on top of it"
7.25% on eating issues
"(I) never know how much to eat"
The rest of the blame belongs to Brendon.
we all know what happened after johnny's guy got by him. it's burned into our memory
Revised...55% Nick, 40% John, 5% Brett for letting his guy run away from him and not giving chase :)
And Nick, don't be an idiot.
johnny we were playing zone defense all tournament and this one time you want me to follow the guy? Where were you backing up to anyway? you just starting backing away from him for no reason and then tried to catch up but were to slow. I knew you'd blame me somehow.

I should be getting some hoop in soon, John I will let you know. I think I will see you on sunday, I will be in Portland!
Brett, I think we have the same District Convention, July 16-18??
Hope to see you !
Chris, despite what you read on the blog it was a great time. Wish we could have done better, but it was still fun.
I'll look for you on Sunday...and let's start planning some hoops...
john why try to get me going if all your gonna do is say settle down after?

are there any summer leagues that people would be willing to do? Like every wednesday night kinda thing like tewksbury. but cleaner play
why couldnt we just divide the regulars into two teams who plan on playing together in Montreal?
because there will be players who aren't going to Montreal who will be playing.
I'd love to go back to Tewksbury for like the Monday night league. That ref Rich said Mondays were clean play.
Who could play on Monday nights? or any night during the week?
I'll be out for the next 2 months anyway.
Just think: Play hockey for an hour or so and then go upstairs to LOU's PLACE and have a beer and some wings. Nothing better
why don't we just join a league that plays at Saugus?
They play on Monday through Thursday.
Why haven't we looked into this sooner?
Then you just divide them up between the two teams. but keep the same regulars together
Here's a solution- granted not easy because you need 4 goalies...
Setup 2 side to side playing surfaces in Saugus on each end. Yes, the overall length is about 20' shorter than Playon.ca, but so what.
Play 15 minute periods with 5 minute breaks.
Rotate the teams to play a round robin format. Winning teams face off for final 2 period game and other teams to the same.
All we'd need is some 2x4's and an extra set of nets.
Like I said, I don't remember the start of the play, just trying to chase the guy down. I am going to guess that I expected him to pass the puck, or shoot it down the rink, and I wanted to take the middle away from him. Kind of like when a guy gets a partial breakaway, and as the back-checker you try to force him to one side of the net. His only legit scoring option was to pass it across IMO.

i don't think i was so much better.
I would say that me and Ron were better than the rest.
I thought Ron play exceptional. And was kind enough to shoot one in off Mike's foot for him
And what was wrong with what brendon said? I'm gonna say you disagree with what he said about you Johnny
In July i could probably start playing again (prob not at 100% but close). Ron or Jack, are you interested in a league? Darrin, could you play every Monday or Wednesday? Griff? Brendon? Mike D? Nick? Will Borges be back?

Nick: 2G, 3A, 13 Shots, 5 T.O., +17
Ron: 9G, 4A, 34 Shots, 3 T.O., +9
Mike: 4G, 4A, 15 Shots, 5 T.O., +9
Jack: 3G, 5A, 18 Shots, 7 T.O., +8
Darrin: 111 Shots on net, GAA 3.5, SV% 87, 1 Shut out
Brett, not sure about the assists or anything, but I had 9 goals on the tourney...1 in the first game, 4 a piece in games 2 & 3.
And I believe that you had 12 total. 2 in the first, 5 in the second, 3 in the third, and 2 in the fourth.
yeah john there's one goal in game 3 that i tipped off your shot. The 3rd goal of the game.
ok so Brendons out for a league.
I guess you should get the goal cause there isn't conclusive evidence on either video. I just remember tipping it. But you can have it. i have plenty to share. Anyone else want one?
You sure? I remember 2 one timers, a breakaway, and a wrist shot that I didn't remember you even being near the shot...no biggie either way though.
BTW, I meant to counter your trade in the Yahoo league, but have been too busy.
if you watch the video of game 3 john, on the 3rd goal i'm behind the ref. But like i said hard to tell from the video.
There were a bunch of plays like that where i couldn't really tell what happened. Kinda had to use my best judgment on some saves Darrin made and things like that. So i guess the stats aren't perfect but they're pretty darn close
the highest +/-? I like.
Correction on the stats
Ron had 8 goals, Jack had 2.
Just bad math on my part
ok so i messed up on the math really bad(it was 2 AM when i added it together).
I'll send the corrected spreadsheet to john or nick
no cause Jacks goal in game 2 wasn't counted by the ref so i didn't count it.
YOu had 17 goals for that game, minus Jack goal that wasn't counted makes it 16. ref thought it was off the crossbar....he seemed to have a problem determining if shots hit the crossbar or went in. atleast 3 time

Darrin you're cut
So the truth comes out! If only there was a secret recording somewhere...
I say Brett should be relegated to a full blown water and towel boy.
That means squirting water into my mouth with a gatorade bottle.
Plus in between each shift, I want him to spray me with those combo fan/water sprayers.
I only deal in reality Brendon, but recognize that fantasies exist, for instance the fantasy that you use a regular sized hockey stick so you can at least look the part of a real hockey player. Jk :)
Brendon, you are a odd duck, but don't worry odd ducks are a plenty and we luv em.
You were wise leaving Ron out of the chemistry selections.
Brett's Chemistry List

I think Jared is better than both of us BTW
And so you do think your the best even though you could be givien the same criticism as me? and you played verse players of lesser talent and goalies of lesser talent.
Johnny face it, you're good verse lesser players(game 2&3 in montreal and all years of Saugus) but verse good talent you fade.
So new question Johnny, how much better are you than everyone else?
I'm sure having all day tomorrow will give you plenty of time to try to formulate your argument...just try using facts this time.
no i said Ron was just as good as me.
Ok sorry 3 bad tournaments.
John you don't want me to use facts. the video would break your heart and your image of yourself playing "good" in Montreal.
and who game plans for you? Brad?
That is all you've done is try to rip everyone on the team to try to make yourself look better.
nope just you Johnny.
And again, who game plans for you? The Hanson Bateux certainly didn't have to
Johnny, you're my new Brendon
Apparently Brett, you need to learn how to read.
But hey, you're the whole team anyway right?
have fun. I'm going co ed.
Johnny i've already said that i could have done better and i keep thinking of things i could have done different(like pass to you less).
Johnny check your email

In my opinion this is not boring, it's down right embarrassing.
Ron did you read the posts? If so then it's not boring it's captivating
Hahaha... captivating!
Lets see, does MSN Encarta's definition of captivating describe you and john's back and forth squabble?
cap·ti·vat·ing
Definition:
enchanting or irresistible: attracting and holding somebody's attention by charm or other pleasing or irresistible features
there was something that made you read all those posts, something that made it irresistible.
so irresistible in fact, that you had to comment on it.

I hadn't looked at this since Saugus ended until I was at the convention and everyone was telling me I should..
The title of this post "Who's Fault" - just about sums it up.
Has there ever been a Tourney that didn't end with finger pointing?
B team unite!!!
No mike. And i will always be here to make sure that doesn't happen
