Masterton Trophy

The Masterton trophy is typically given out to people that have recovered from injury and returned to the NHL. The official definition is "perseverance and dedication to hockey". We've had a couple of players with major injuries this year, Jared and Matt S, but neither have returned yet from their injuries. So they would be eligble next year, not this (unless you count Jared returning from his cold early in the season). Brett obviously had a horrific injury too (just look at his avatar) and he returned much quicker than normal. In my mind, probably a slam dunk for this award. The only other big injuries I'm aware of were me and Billy both injuring our backs. In his case though he hasn't returned so he's not qualified.

To make this interesting though, let's use age as something so persevere through. In which case you can add Mike Meadows and Jack Riley to the list. Mike playing a respectable, if not illegal brand of forward, and Jack playing very well in net, as well as showing some offensive instincts up on offense. It's probably not nearly enough to overthrow Brett from winning this award, but there are your nominees. If I missed anybody, let me know.

My votes:
1. Brett D
2. Jack R
3. Mike M
4. John R

To answer Brendon's question, yes, post it in order of who you would give the award to. I'll wait the placement each person gets (ie a first place vote is worth 4 points, last place vote is worth 1).

For this one, as I said earlier there is really only one candidate, but I figured I'd introduce a smidge of drama :)

not sure of how intense the other injuries were so I stuck with brett however,

Jack R
Mike M
John R

John, you are too young to be on this list with a bad back. Get to the gym, toughen up. When you are holding your Little girl you will have to be strong!!!!! and what if you have more than one kid??

Great to see you guys at the assembly!

Chris, had to miss a couple of days of work when it happened cuz I couldn't walk (or sit for that matter)!

But in the overall scheme of things, in no way does it compare. I just couldn't think of anyone else that had suffered injuries that made it back.
Reggie, injuries to your pride doesn't count :)

just in case i don't make it through the highly risky knuckle surgery today, i want everyone to know that.........I'm the best

Plus if i do make it through this puts me in the running for the Masterton trophy next year too

Brett, hope your surgery went well!

"Nick, great job with the stats. Maybe they'll be up by 2012."

the world is ending is 2012, so if they arent up before then...

isn't it supposed to be an injury that happened while playing?

Brett said...

no. cancer isn't an "in game" injury but players have won it after returning from it.

brendon, this year i was returning from my index finger injury. Next year it'll be my ring finger injury

Brett said...

i'm saving my middle finger for the year after that
