Selke Trophy

The Selke trophy is given to the best defensive forward. To me, it's probably only a two-man race for this award: Jared and Brad...just seeing if you're paying attention. IMO, Brett and myself will battle out for this award. However, I see a little battle going for my nominees for 3rd and 4th place, and you might be surprised who I nominate for that.

Nominees:

John - Played center almost every night, and made a concerted effort to get back and cover. Improvement in faceoffs helped here too. From a numbers perspective, second lowest goals against among players with a 3.80 (only Nick was lower with a 3.76). Goal differential was second best with a plus 65.

Brett - Despite playing wing most nights, a less defensively demanding position, Brett was by far and away the best winger at coming back to cover defensively. This helps increase his value over other offensively gifted forwards. His defensive numbers were top 5 too: 3.98 goals against, and + 29 goal differential (despite missing significant time). I could probably vote him for the award over myself, but he used up all of my goodwill last month :)

Dale - A few years ago I never thought I'd say this, but Dale took a big step forward with his defensive play this year. He always was pretty good at defense, but as a defenseman. As a forward his defensive play was lacking, seemingly to indifference. This year though he was asked to play quite a bit of center, and really did a good job getting back to cover. He still has room to grow in this role, but he put together a very solid season defensively.

Brendon - Yes, you read that right. Before you think that I've gone mad, allow me to explain: hustle usually wasn't Brendon's problem defensively. Sure, he'd have his lazy nights, and be limping around when the ball was in his defensive zone (before running as hard as could into the offensive end), but his biggest problem has been his awareness of who to cover. Brendon made some strides this year while playing center. Could it have been a fluky few games? Sure, but I don't really have any other candidates. We'll see how he does in the upcoming season.

Overall, a gap from 1/2 down to 3, and then another gap down to 4, but here are my rankings:

1. John
2. Brett
3. Dale
4. Brendon

Not sure Brendon...maybe 10? At most? Not too many people end up playing center. When you did I thought there were times you played pretty well defensively. As a wing though, not at all.

We really didn't have anyone else playing forward enough that was good defensively though. Chris, Matt, and Mike would probably be candidates if they played it enough because of their hustle.

I'm not gonna hate.. but why isnt griff on here? I agree with Brett and Johnny and Brendon being on there becuase he is so disruptive. John gets back and hooks lol. but hey it's defense. I think Griff should be nominated.

2. Johnny
3.Dale
4.Brendon
HM to griff

i can nominate who I choose...Jared all the way.

Reg, I thought about Griff...when he's motivated he is pretty good defensively, but the effort defensively (when he plays forward) does not always last (depends on the day). I thought Griff made very good strides offensively this year though.

Nick, you can nominate who you want...too bad you'll finish behind Chris Y and Danny Hall for the Norris though!

Yeah Horton for Wideman and the 15th and next years 3rd. Wideman put up some good points in the playoffs last year but he was a major liability making atrocious mistakes at key times and fumbling most of his passes on the power play.

Well at least we will finally be on Colin Cambell's good side. I think he was picked up to let Begin go. Supposed to be a good penalty killer, fourth line guy. He has a cap hit of 800,000 which is quite low enough. Big night tomorrow... Taylor or Tyler.

Yeah I think Hall is the better more NHL ready player of the two but Seguin has incredible potential to be more valuable than Hall as a franchise center and a guy you build the team around. B's will put him on the wing for a couple years and he can shoot the puck well since he had 8 more goals than Hall did. Kessel was a center as well that the Bruins put on the wing. It will be interesting if Seguin will make the team this year or if he will go back to Juniors cause he won't qualify to play in the AHL due to age.

Yeah more than likely they should start him. Duchene and Tavares both started this year and made great contributions and there is more buzz this year than last year about these 2. Stamkos and Doughty the year before. I am just going by what Charelli said in press conferences multiple times that the guy they get may not make the team as they have a system where they like to inject young talent gradually. Bruins are a lot older and more experienced than Islanders and the Avalanche.

I think the B's get Seguin tonight, but would not be shocked if they do end up with Hall.

BTW, I am completely fine with Seguin...I think he is going to end up the better player.

I was just thinking the same thing

It especially stinks when Brendon recycles everything he hears on the radio about Hall and Seguin :)

Thanks Bob Biers!!!

Hall is the only player to ever win 2 consecutive MVP awards at the Memorial Cup and the guy plays every shift to win. He has only been held pointless in 2 games of 49 that he played this year. I think Hall will get more playing time then Seguin on a team that is in last place so I see his stats being better than Seguin for his rookie year. Hall goes into the dirty areas to score goals, and crashes the net, the kind of stuff that scores you goals in the playoffs when the refs put their whistles down. They are both great players and both will be stars un the league I'm sure.
