Haverhill / Lawrence Cup, Start of Saugus, Norris voting, and last year's stats

Hey all, Despite our small group yesterday, baseball was a lot of fun. Among the highlights:

  1. Brett hitting the first out of the park homer of the year
  2. Ricky responding to the couple of ten-year-old hecklers with a line drive home run right at them, and then yelling at them as he rounded the bases
  3. Brendon taking an A-Rod chop at Cindy's glove trying to dislodge the ball as he was out at second base
  4. Brendon's team trying to take the lead in the last inning via bunt singles
  5. Our team, started by Jack R's solo homer leading off the bottom of the last inning (a Gibsonesque moment), capped by Brett's walk-off base hit

All told, 5 homers on the day. And no, I didn't hit one out yet, or you'd all be hearing about it!

A couple of things: Norris trophy voting and last year's final stats will be up this week (if Nick doesn't help with it I'll post them myself). We want them up this week since the new season will be starting in just about a month: we're looking at the first Saugus date to be Sunday, September 19th. Does that work for everyone?

Finally, it's time to start planning the Haverhill / Lawrence Cup (we might play in the Lawrence rink instead). I'll post the rules again in a little while, but we're going to have 4 teams, 16 players total (not including the 4 goalies). The date we're looking at is Saturday, September 11. This should be a very fun event, open to anyone that's been coming to Saugus. Since we're only going to have 16 people though, whoever the first 16 are that commit to playing will be guaranteed to play. So let me know if you want to play in that tourney.

In so far for the Haverhill Cup: John, Brett, Darrin (G), Jack R (G), Brendon.

I think i speak for everyone when i say that start date is a couple months too soon. Let's hold off to the end of november/ beginning of december.

Jared, if Welker is back already, can't you make it by the start of September?

Jared said...

ahh welker is not back, and he's like 7 months now, he's not back until he plays in a game! I get to start jogging next week, that'll be more than what bradley does at saugus.

Cool, I didn't know that you were that far along...

Jared, did you want to still ref our tourney?

Jared said...

ya reffing would be fun, although i'll probably call a few too many penalties against brett

John said...

It would be awesome if you got yourself a black and white striped referee shirt with orange arm-bands...and a whistle!

BTW, if this goes as well as I think it will we can do another one by the end of November that you'll be able to play in.

what about rule changes to this year in saugus? or gameplay changes such as timed games and penalty shots.

Brett said...

especially with the A and B teams playing verse each other everyweek

I'll make a new thread in a couple of weeks where we can put in suggestions for the rule changes and decide which ones we want.

why are timed games even a question? we're gonna do it for the haverhill cup, why can't we do it for saugus?

It'd be best to have timed games in saugus. Why not make the games as real as possible?

I'm sure nick is still worried about the tons and tons and tons of icing that is guarrantied to happen everygame because we lack any shred of sportsmanship. And don't forget about all those last .01 second goals that'll happen.

I'll be honest, I'm not the biggest proponent of timed games. Yet, if everyone wanted it then I have no problem trying it. The only thing is, I'd want to start it at the beginning of the year, not half-way through.

"I'm sure nick is still worried about the tons and tons and tons of icing that is guarrantied to happen everygame because we lack any shred of sportsmanship."

First, "guarrantied" are you kidding me? that was Brad-esque spelling. Awful.

Awful.

second...I'd ice it, nhl plyers do the same thing...so what would stop us?

The biggest problem is people like you, me and especially Johnny would never get off with like 7 mins left...we'd "tough" it out to try and get the win. It's our nature. We are competitive.

We all pay the same amount and as much as the time on ice for each player is different for certain "groups" i think the seperation would only grow with timed games.

The "kid" who complained 10 mins into his first game with us about the amount time i play will never shut up if we go to timed games.

Brett said...

so fix your problem Nick. You are the very poor sport that your worried about. So don't do it!! You're not good enough to be out there "toughing it out" like me and johnny do anyway. You should be subbing on a regular basis cause you become lazy and easily beaten when tired. NHL teams put their best players on the ice at the end for a reason so why wouldn't me or johnny be on the ice at the end?

Nhl players don't do the same thing. They don't even like to go for empty nets because they might miss and have it go for icing.

But i guess nick's right and every other street or dek hockey tournament ever held has gotten it wrong by having timed games.

Brett said...

and johnny you say that if EVERYONE wants timed games you'll do it. How bout the fact that everyone doesn't want to go to 5 goals everytime? So why would it take everyones permission to go to timed games?

Hey if it doesn't work out in the first month we can switch back to a 5 goal limit.

Wow - been a while since I've been on here.

No timed games - I agree that the better players wouldn't get off the closer to the end a game gets to. It would leave the lesser players feeling left out. Everyone pays the same amount to play. If the purpose of Saugus is to enjoy a friendly game of hockey, then timing games doesn't lead us further down that line.

And Jared should be back by Sept. No excuses!

Brett said...

yeah we should listen to lenny the guy who shows up 14% of the time

what do you think happens when its 4-4 in a game johnny and i dont get off and those games could last another half hour wouldn't you rather us be on for the last five minutes rather than the last half hour

If you really care about it that much make a stink about it in game call us off the ice dont just complain on the blog Im sure Johnny and I wont be idiots about it
