Ah, so the truth has finally come out? John has voiced his opinion of timed games...did you see it? For months now, he has never really stated a viewpoint. His viewpoint was obvious based on his actions but we finally know for sure. But John, the middle game isn't an option. It cant be. It wont be. Pick a side.
We all know where I stand on this. But let me state this: Timed games are a good idea in theory, I just dont think it will work in Saugus. I could be completely wrong, but that's what I believe. Hockey wouldnt be ruined for me, I actually think I'd enjoy timed games. But I think it could ruin the enjoyment for others. Some of us need to see the other side of the coin.
So John, quit Flip Flopping! We all need to pick a side! No Poll though. Brett has way to much time on his hands, he could tamper with the results. Instead we will keep a list. Here is what we have so far:
For Timed Games:
Brett,
Jared
Against Timed Games:
Nick,
Chris,
Lenny, Brad, Johnny
State Your View! Dont let Brett fool you, it matters! Except Dave's view of course!

stats are up...sigh.
that's fine if you don't like it, i never asked you to like it. I asked you to try it and keep an open mind.
Johnny already said he'd try it so he's on my side
Yeah, I don't think I've flipped-flopped at all. I've stated all along I wasn't in favor of timed games. Yet I also said that it's not about me...if enough people wanted to do it then we can give it a try. Pretty consistent.
so back to this arguement. How many regulars do we need to agree till we try timed games?
there are good points and bad points regarding timed games. but how about this.
Games are up to 5. but each game can go no longer than 30 minutes.
Thats how they do it in Hoop it up tourney's. (games to 16 by 2 or 30 minutes long) I know , I know , it s Basketball. But it keeps games limited.
So the timing thing used the right way can work.
Thats my flippity floppity flip for the day!
That's an interesting compromise...it helps the goalies, and still kind of keeps the structure of the games the way we have them now. There will obviously be games that hit the thirty minute mark and these will lead to the great finishes.
Thoughts?
So just catching up on the posts...
1. Brett, I played in 53% of the games last year. You played in 61%. If regularity is the deciding factor on whose opinion matters, then Nick B should be the sole judge as he played the most games out of anyone.
2. John, loved the Lost finale. If that means the end of our friendship, so be it!
3. Thanks Chris for the compromise (and support).
Brett, I feel you are preoccupied with making things more competitive instead of more fun. I don't care what you say, timed games do make them more competitive. The more competitive and meaningful it is, the more the higher talented players will want to stay on the floor and the lesser players will be marginalized.
Now you may say that more competition can lead to more fun. However, if the fun isn't spread among all the talent levels that play, then you risk losing a lot of support.
There's my two cents - take it for what it's worth from a 53% timer.
Lenny, you're dead to me! Of course, in Lost, that just means you can do whatever you want in a place that you "created". Just awful.
I think Chris' idea might hold water. Games are to five, but end at 30 minutes no matter what. So you get the best of both worlds in a way. Just my thoughts...
I completely agree with myself, and John of Course
my lifetime attendance is a bit higher than that Lenny. And i've played with one hand while you sit out cause you don't feel like running some sundays. That's someimes the case even when you do show up.
AGAIN(3rd time now), me and Johnny stay out there all game long NOW without timed games. But now that the games will be timed it's a huge deal to people? CALL JOHNNY OFF!!! CALL ME OFF!!!! i don't get the big deal. If you care so much, do something about it at saugus.
Lenny should we get rid of stats? and if not, why not? Why is it ok to make things competitive with stats but not with timed games?
Johnny i guess the whole haverhill cup idea is a terrible idea only cause the games will be timed and at the end of 30 minutes we'll all be at each others throats.
yes i like chris' alteration
I think stats are dumb too (unless you can use them to make a point!). :)
I think it's not so much about the elite players staying out there for the end of the game, but the mid to lower level players not wanting to come off so they can be in the action.
And you know how people take getting called off...
Brett can you ever argue your point without bashing the person that doesn't agree with you?
what does the fact that you played with one hand and Lenny stayed home cause he didn't feel like running have to do with anything?
or saying that he shows up and doens't run show?
So your more dedicated to hockey than he is?
So you showed up more than he does, which he acknowledged...
So what!!
On timed games - I don't care either way. The guys who don't get off now will be the same guys who don't get off with timed games.
The guys who pretend like they don't hear people calling them off now will be the same guys who pretend like they don't hear people calling them off in timed games.
With that said if timed games would bother people or cause them from not coming then I'd say don't time them.
Saying your going to time them so it's more like a tourney it's a good reason for 3/4 of the guys who don't play in tourneys...
The idea Chris had sounds like a good comprimise
Mike, Brett is accomplishing what he set out to do...get people back to reading the blog. It's been a slow summer, Brett throws a little controversey in, and then suddenly there's been more posts in three days then there's been all summer.
To be honest, this debate is completely different than the Haverhill Cup since there will only be 4 people per team - just one sub. Games will only be twenty minutes, so guys will be exhausted and looking for a sub.
I do think that the captains of their teams this year can do a better job anyway of making sure people sub enough. It will never be perfect either way, but we can be more congnizant of it.
And if people feel like they are not getting enough ice time, just let me know and I will try to manage it better.
And yes, I realize the irony since I usually sub the least.
BTW, thanks Nick for getting the stats up. I have the Norris nominations done, I'll probably post it tomorrow.
Hart nominations next week.
No mike i can't. But i'll work on it for next season.
I'm gonna say lenny still shows up to Saugus no matter what i say and forget what i even said in 2 1/2 days cause he doesn't take me too seriously.
"that's fine if you don't like it"
did you read my post?
I said: "Timed games are a good idea..."
Read before you speak.
Mike...well said.
To me the Chris idea is "flip-floppy"
Personally, I feel our best games last longer then 30 mins...those are our 4-4 games...I personally wouldnt want to lose those games...
Also Brett you said:
"Johnny already said he'd try it so he's on my side"
Next post by John reads:
"I've stated all along I wasn't in favor of timed games"
Yeah, what list does John belong on?
nick i already admitted that I was flip floppy so you are restating the obvious.
he said he'd try it for atleast a month. My side
Again you don't have to like the idea, you won't know if you actually like it till you try it though.
Nick do you like broccoli?
I wouldnt eat that if it was deep fried in chocolate sauce...
vile weed!
Honestly, I dont care if we try it. Again, I like the idea...but I think it could cost us guys...we need guys.
no nick, i cost us guys.
Number of people usually isn't a problem till later in the season. I can always bring warren if needed
I have a question...how long do our games usually last? everytime i played we only got in 2 or 3 games on average..and thats in 2 1/2 to 3 hours! in fact i dont think i played in one game that was less than a half hour.
so if it took at least 45 minutes or so for one team to get to 5, i really dont get the whole mercy rule idea.
And im totally FOR timed games...not just because its way better for the goalie stats but for many reasons. I dont know about Steve F. and the other goalies, but when the games are pushing 60 or so minutes, especially if your trying to hold off alot of pressure in net, im not as good for the next game.
Again, id be more excited for timed games, but im just the goalie.
yes darrin. that's what always happens. The best game is usually the first game of the night. Then the other games fly by cause everyone's tired and all the blow outs happen. Blow outs aren't fun(for the losing team)
With timed games we're not just gonna waste all our energy on game 1. Games 2 and 3 will be just as intense.
We're not going to keep a rule that will cost us guys...if it doesn't work out and guys don't like it we can switch back. We'll implement Chris' suggestion though - 5 is the max even if it's before 30 minutes.
Brett's quote that "he costs people" reminds me of the t-shirt Sandler's former boss was wearing "Guns don't kill people. I kill people."
I like timed games for the goalies and for the fact that was stated already that the first game always lasts the longest and then the other two are just sloppy messes.
chris's idea is fine but i dont see us ever getting to that because the games never end in under 30 mins. what happens if there's a tie? penalty shots or next goal wins?
of course my opinion doesn't matter beacause i played 0% of the time last year!
I'm always in favor of penalty shots, but that's up for discussion...
Penalty shots would be cool, but you should have to pick from the guys on the floor when then game has ended
Mike, I like your avatar, but what did you have against that movie?
Ahhh...a new season of change is coming... i love it!
With that said, a new avatar was in order.
Timed games is an awesome idea and having the mercy rule of 5 is right on.
Here is my take on the whole discussion of subbing. If your doggin it because your tired... then get off the floor.
I don't mind someone takin a double shift if they are hustling and not bent over huffing and puffing.
However, its a team sport and taking a 'triple shift' or staying on the floor for 20 minutes straight is not being a team player.
I think teams captains should take the initiative and set precedent that everyone should sub regularly.
To me, quick shifts are the way to go... you run your butt off for a couple minutes and get off for a couple minutes, etc, etc.
Lastly... someone ought to by a big digital clock timer to place on the time keeper booth. Can you imagine Brett or Johnny on a breakaway and Brendon yelling TIMES UP... GAME OVER By My WATCH!!!!
I'm expecting no less than 10 straight posts from the man who types faster than Mavis Beacon...
The subject being Digital Clocks, their benefits, their flaws, their bugs and finally the best work arounds!!!
uuummmmmmmmmmmmmm.............BRENDON
does hockey town let us use the scoreboard?
So Nick, are there more people for timed games than you thought?
That's what i was thinking Nick. That'd be the easiest way.
if its a tie at the end of 30 minutes then it should go straight to a shootout.
more exciting and makes for more interesting stats
yes to the penalty shot after ties.
With regards the icing that may happen. How should we penalize it?
Should we do a penalty shot to really enforce the icing rule and deter people from doing it on purpose? Penalty shots would be one of the best catagories to compare to each other. (Maybe Lenny is a penalty shot specialist) Or maybe the team could just take it a the top of the zone uncontested
I'm all for as many penalty shots as possible, but don't think you can do it for every icing. Maybe icings that are not failed passes within the last 3-5 minutes?
BTW, Ron are you playing in the Haverhill Cup? I've still got a couple of spots open.
no brett, Im not surprised people like the idea...i like the idea. But there are people against it was point.
But this is going to happen so lets do this the right way... We need something where there is no doubt the game is out of time. Everyone should no the game is over right when it happens. If not, it will eventually lead to a problem or two. I dont want someone on the bench with control...
I think they use the scoreboard for flag football, dont they?
Not sure I should play, because after Montreal, my right knee wasn't right... hence the 180 DL
Since you need a goalie, I can bring my own team.
I have Dave Kimple (G), Devin Kimple, Mark Kimple, Jack B and myself.
Ron, so would you guys all be in for sure?
ron's only healthy if he has his own team...
I told them I would have to verify with organizers whether they were definitely needed.
They are interested. I told them I should know by Monday 8/30. I actually only talked to Dave and Devin, but Mark (father) I didn't ask, but he'd probably come to watch or play.
Jack said he'd play if I did... but you have his number and email if you want to touch base direct.
