Points

Quick Update: Let me know who is in this Sunday at 6:00.  I want to book the rink today if we have enough guys.

Obviously inspired by the Patriot's offensive explosion yesterday there were plenty of goals and plenty of points to go around last night.  On paper, the dark team looked to have an advantage which appeared solidified after winning the first game rather easily.  Yet, the White team came back to win the next three games, including the fourth game where they blew a 3-0 lead, fell behind 4-3, and then won 5-4.

When picking up the teams JB had the choice: first pick in straight one-for-one picking scenario, or second pick but choice of goalie.  JB chose the first pick and selected Jared.  After Nick was selected for the White team JB chose Joe to solidify his defense while Billy was chosen for the White team.  The remaining picks had Cindy, Andrew, and Brendon going to the White team with Mike D, Elliot, Brad, and Nathan Cuevas going to the dark.  On paper it looked as thought the dark team had the edge in players while the White team had an edge in net.  In Game 1 it did not play out that way with Mike letting in several soft goals and Rick making some nice saves.  As the night went on though the goaltending edge swung in favor of the White team.  That, plus improved play helped them win the final 3 games.

Notes:

  • Brendon played very well from Game 2 on including some great passing from behind the net leading to a couple of goals.  However, two negatives of note: defensive play in Game 1 and failing two 3-on-1s in Game 4.  The only thing I will say about Game 1 is that if you find that you are not covering anyone when the other team has the ball, you probably blew your defensive assignment.  The thing is, blown coverage happens and I had a couple of them last night that lead to goals.  But, you have to acknowledge where the coverage broke down so that it does not continue happening.  As for the 3-on-1s there is nothing else to be said...overall though, I thought you played very well after Game 1.

  • Joe looked in mid-season form with some head hunting slapshots and some knee slides.

  • Cindy had one of the best shots of the night with her second goal: off the post and in, beating Rick to the glove side.

  • JB and Jared continue to master hockey's version of the Hail Mary.  Brad actually had a beautiful transition pass leading to a Jared goal too...it's too bad that he played all of 3 minutes!

  • Outside of some early turnovers in Game 1 and some lackadaisical play in Game 4 Billy and Nick did great on defense.  Huge factor in the White team's success.

  • No one get too excited yet, but I plan to get all of the stats done this week...yeah, yeah - actions speak louder than words!

Good thing rick saved us in game 1 otherwise we would've been blown out every game. I can't believe you guys were able to overcome the poor goaltending from Mike.

Good job snagging 7 assists Brendon! We all remember those great passes to Cindy.

In game 1 Mike let in at least 3 soft goals. Not entirely his fault, he hasn't played in that rink before, but they were soft. Rick did not stand on his head in Game 1, but he did play pretty well early on.

I don't remember all of Brendon's assists, but all three that he had to me were legit, and two of them were very nice passes.

atleast 3 soft goals?

I scored on 2 break aways and a slap shot from about 3 feet away. Borges' game winner was an excellent shot. I guess you can say Bradleys was weak because it's bradley but he did put the shot over mike's shoulder from in close.

Tell me Johnny, did any of your goals reach a top speed of over 4 MPH or leave the ground? Was Rick even aware he was playing goalie at any point yesterday?

You don't have to try to pull the miracle underdog victory card every week. Yesterday Rick put one of the 5 worst displays of goaltending ever in Saugus.

Jared, someone on your team (I think it was you) had a backhander that squibbed between his leg and the post for one of the goals, and it wasn't on a good shot. He wasn't very good the first game, but he did get better.

As for Rick, it was obvious that I hadn't played in a while, and there's plenty of room for improvement, especially with my shooting. But, I can't say that there were many "bad" goals that Rick gave up to me. Four were on one-timers in front, two were on rebounds. The one off the faceoff he wasn't ready for was soft as well as a five-hole backhander that I had. The last two were on two-on-ones though - hard to blame a goalie for that.

Ultimately though JB had the choice of first pick or pick of goalie so the rest of the discussion is pretty irrelevant.

After hearing all these fantastic highlights, I'm pretty upset I missed. Sounds like everyone played really hard and gave it their all.

Sorry Brendon, I wanted to book it today but I want to hear from enough people first. If you want to book it for 6:00 inside rink today thought then go ahead.
