WEEKLY POWER RANKINGS

3 comments:
1 Jared - Always seems to beg for a WPR after he has a good tournament. What a loser. That being said, he had a great day. He finished on every breakaway he had due to his ability to suppress his spin-o-Rama urge, and his chemistry with Borges was evident. Jared led the way with 5 goals and even a few assists.

2 Nick - Impressive. It's like when you see a guy run full speed, put it through the defense, deke the goalie and then shelf it you say WOW. Seeing Nick win battle after battle and even multiple 2 on 1 battles along the boards and then being able to send Ron in on a breakaway with a sweet pass, you say WOW! These sweet passes are becoming alarmingly regular. Its almost like Nick is getting better.

3 Brett - The 2 on 1 goal in game 1 was a pretty shot that ended up being the GW and had Jared looking like a genius with his line combos. But Brett quickly threw a wrench in the operation with an ankle injury that lead to line changes, exhaustion and Demaio expecting to be asked to fill in on the top line RW for the rest of the tournament (if you're gonna show up to a tourney and not play, at least video tape). But it worked out for the best as Brett was able to summon the strength and mental fortitude to overcome the excruciating pain in his every step as he worked really well with Jared and Borges.

4 Borges - One too many passes. That's all everyone's been talking about. But other than that offensively bad play, Borges played a great center. With him being the only one to have the skill to win a face off and his ability to octuple shift while scoring those difficult wide open tap in goals, he slightly redeemed himself from the hangover tourney.

5 Kenny - It's nice that we don't have to see the scapegoat every week and be nice to him even though he blew it for everyone. He was good. Maybe even really good. But we were expecting great. And when you give up a 100 foot goal, a 100 foot GAME LOSING goal, you weren't great. Kenny will probably never again give up another goal like that.....unless he's playing for the alliance.

6 Ward - Finally he was just more than flashes of what could be. Ward put together his hustle, speed, tenacity and actually even his hockey sense as a center, but he just wasn't able to get the bounces when he got his chances. But you can be proud of this performance and put it right up there with the ladies revenge game.

7 Griff - The chirping gets me every time. It also makes the refs hate him every time. It's the same reason everyone hates Sydney Crosby. I don't remember him getting many chances offensively, but the adjustments he made after game 1 was awesome. After getting caught and beat standing still, Griff seemed to make sure it never happened the rest of the day. He made sure he was constantly moving or on a guys stick and had himself a solid day on defense.

8 Billy T - Saugus doesn't do him any favors. You'd think that if Cindy can burn Billy around the outside in Saugus, that a good player in a rink twice the size would be able to run backwards with his stick upside down and still get as many breakaways as he wanted. Billy held his own, simplified his game and actually instilled confidence in his teammates by the way he played.

9 Jeremy - I don't blame him for how he played or of what he didn't do offensively. He just wasn't anything special. And when you get the humbling opportunity to play on Wards wing, you need to make sure you are special. But The New Hampshire The Alliance become whole heartedly thankful for his presence once they start thinking about what the alternatives were. In the end he finished as the teams 4th leading scorer and signed a contract for 1 game a year for the alliance.

10 Ronald - He just didn't have it. And I don't think it was an age/endurance thing because he didn't have it in any game, first or last. It was depressing to have that usual feeling, as Ron is winding up for a bomb, that "this is going in" fade to "I hope he hits the net" to "I hope he gets it through" to "maybe next year". Don't get me wrong, I'm not Payton Manning him here, I'm just saying he didn't have a good day. Hey, at least he's not the scape goat right? Right.

WEEKLY POWER RANKINGS

9 comments:
New Hampshire Golf Tournament, September 18-20 2015

“It's Over”

1 Brett – On the biggest stage, under the brightest lights, Brett shined. After going 5-0 in Thursdays basement games, Brett came out and bludgeoned Jimmy on Saturday; Gracefully embarrassing him, and putting to rest any question as to why Ariel settled Brett over Jimmy (although that became less and less of an accomplishment as the weekend progressed) While there were many deserving of 1st, Brett deserved it most after only coming in 2nd in the Ottawa trip. Ya, I figured id finish up the Ottawa rankings right here while I'm at it. Hope Nick doesn't think this is a new low for WPR.

2 Jared – Not only did Jared finish the weekend 6-1 with Brett as his teammate in the basement games, he was also able to go 5-0 with Iggy and finished with an impressive 11-1 record. Unfortunately bullying knows no bounds and actually reared its ugly head Friday night, claiming Jared as it's victim. Jared was able to overcome everyone making fun of his poorly pleated pants and provided us with the biggest moment there was, sinking a 12' birdie putt from the fringe on 18 to win the tournament, making Zack drop 37 F-bombs in his head. The golf gods were smiling upon Jared this weekend.

3 Griff – As steady as they come. Griff is the center of the North Conway Universe. No matter how many people are there, Griff is the one you want to be around to be assured a good time. Now he didn't fair too well on the golf course and surely that should be a big knock against him. But we all know what this ranking is really all about. Who you playing with in 2 weeks?

4 Ward – Some people (1 person) just don't understand Ward's sense of humor and comedic timing and those people should be slapped in the face by Zack. Ward was attacked for the way he involves himself in conversations and that didn't sit too well. Never before has Ward focused his disdain on someone other than Jared for so long. Him and Shane were unable to do anything of note on the courses other than some chip-ins.

5 Borges – My heart goes out to Borges, it truly does. He was so dejected and depressed and annoyed by the time that Sunday rolled around, that no matter how many tolls he drove through on the way home, it just wasn't going to make a difference nor were the 38 scriptures Jimmy quoted. I hope you learned your lesson. Never go 0-100 and never miss out on a Thursday night in North Conway. Did you get to watch the tape?

6 Jamie – Jamie gave us some of the best 1 liners all weekend and it didn't hurt that they were mostly about the same person. Cargo shorts, Dobson, punching Jared's friend in the face, restraining orders. I have no idea how he did playing golf.

7 Iggy – Iggy wasn't overwhelmingly entertaining this weekend like he has been in the past and the gifts for winning longest drive and closest to pin were just short of embarrassing. If he wants to be ranked higher next year he should probably think about spending more time with Jared.

8 Jessie – Being nice doesn't get you rewarded in North Conway. His refusal to be integrated into any one of the cliques that were formed, and his inability to understand simple rules to a game really hampered his chances at a higher spot on the rankings. But after promising to never let anyone discourage him from accomplishing any of his spiritual goals in life, Jessie went out and played a round of golf that was simply amazing. Easily the best golfer for the weekend.

9 Joe – It's just not fair that a stinking 97 year old guy gets to hit from 30 yards closer. I'm sure Iggy will have all the kinks worked out by next year. And by kinks I mean the roster. Joe was on point Saturday as a twosome with Brett and his ability to go from loving his teammate to hating him in an instant was something unique. I'm just glad I was able to see him have the happiest day of his life.

10 Mike Meadows – As soon as he clears out all the mold in the basement and lets us be slobs that don't have to cleanup after ourselves, he'll be a lock for the top 10 every year. This year he just barely squeaked in. Will the dashiki joke ever get old?

11 Bruce – Another pity rank here. Five and a half hours of golf, knowing that your teammate has zero chance of doing anything helpful or productive.

12 John Star – He's like a tractor beam.

13 Zack – He did what the other 14 people in the house only dreamt about and I'm not talking about playing a 1 player grandprix in mariokart 64.

14 Shane – Who throws their clubs?

15 Phil – This ranking is a bit confusing here. Without Phil, the weekend just doesn't get ranked. I would love to tell you all the things Phil did, but you simply would not believe it. From taking dumps in peoples back yards, to hoarding entire bottles his favorite drink to undoing all the hard work that Jared did. Rest assured that Phil and his political wardrobe will be back for next years tournament.

16 Jimmy – I can't stress enough what a pleasure it was to watch Jimmy interact with 15 other people. It was a treat. A real treat. As the Brendon Martino of the social world, Jimmy could do no wrong. Whether it be him applying Proverbs 25:11 for 3 straight hours or cracking a lighthearted, whimsical math/calender/time of day/conception joke or his retelling of some of the incredible parts that took place at a recent Thursday night meeting. All I know is that the sky is the limit for this kid. And after just 2 whole nights of genuine laughter and endearing comradery, Jimmy road off into the sunset feeling more confident than ever before in his ability to be everything to everyone, everywhere all the time. Not one person who was there this past weekend can say Jimmy didn't leave a lasting impression on them.

3 Ron

I don't know what everyone else was expecting from Ron but I think this year he was worth his weight in gold (his worth seems to keep increasing...) I kept hearing from reputable sources was that other guys in the locker room were less than pleased with his defense or his commitment to it. And aside from that brutal shift that he was only a part of in the final game, Ron did his job and did it well. I don't remember Ron making dumb decisions or lazy plays with the ball. I remember him being the feistiness, dirtiest weasel on the rink and I know I'll never forget the incredible shoot out game winner to end that most intense marathon.

#4 Jared

Let's go down the checklist of what made Jared such a great captain this year. Cool, calm and collected? ✔️ Likable? ✔️ Inspirational? ✔️ clutch scoring? A big fat ❌. "But he scored a ton of goals" an idiot might say. 12 to be exact. Well since Jared is so good at math, let's go ahead and do a bit ourselves. In two games verse all girls, Jared lit up the stat sheet with 2 goal in the first (including the GW) and a hat trick in game 2. Impressed so far? Jared then went bananas in the quarter finals with another hat trick.......in a game his team lost by 5. Real clutch wouldn't you say? So exactly how many meaningful goals are we left with from Jared's stellar weekend? Jared? Little help?

#5 Griff

If you've ever wondered how high up the rankings a game winning goal could get you, this is your answer. Was there any doubt that's what he was going to do with a free take out? His ability to hit the wide open net was just what Slush Fund needed with 2 minutes left. Griff played hard or at least he made whatever he was doing look hard. But stealing goals and assists from teammates just to inflate his stats is embarrassing. What was almost as embarrassing was his ball movement. He stirred up repressed memories of Jack Bellan firing the ball down the ice with every possible chance he had. The creativity just wasn't there nor was that one incredible shift he usually performs each year.

How's Mookie Doing?

#6 Nick

I hate putting Nick here. He almost certainly deserves better. On the bright side, be glad I don't have Jared's unrealistic standards. He probably would've put Nick in 8th, seeing as Jared wanted Nick to transform into this offensive juggernaut who developed a twisted wrister with pinpoint accuracy from the blueline and even tried to convince Nick that he "HAD" to do all this if we were to make any run at the finals. Nick never even came close to satisfying Jared's fantasy. Now, Nick has shown some consistency in the ability to make sweet passes but, the reason Nick is 6th this year is because of his level of defense. The words "not great" come to mind. In fact this is the first year where you could say Nick has performed below his expected level of defense. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that Nick wasn't trying as hard with Brett in goal and harbored some resentment towards him ever since Brett demanded a trade off his team right before the Haverhill Cup. And this especially shined through when Nick snapped at Brett after a bad giveaway yelling "I KNOW WHAT I DID!" What Nick should be slightly worried about is that Jared will eventually be right. Can you say skippy fin fin? Better start working on your E.J. renditions Nick. It's your only hope.

7 Ward

In no way, shape or form does 7th place make Mike the scapegoat (there’s no way im using that up on a lowly #7). But when your whole Saturday can be summed up with, not, “Remember that insane goal where he deked 2 guys and scored between his legs?”, not, “Remember that pass that he had to air-mail 50 feet that landed on the stick for an easy tap-in?” but “Remember that stick lift……?”. I will say that Sunday was much better, and getting a hat-trick off of a hung-over all girls team is nothing to sneeze at but I needed something more. I’m not saying I was expecting, or even hoping for, down the stretch clutch scoring or for him to elevate to some level we’ve never seen before. I just wanted some consistency. Something that his line mates could count on. And other than hustle, I was left wanting, as were his teammates. Does this count as closure?

#8 Iggy

Here at the offices of W.P.R. we care about one thing and one thing only. Hockey performance. Jonathan's after hour antics will go down in history as some of the funniest things to ever happen on a hockey trip. The conversations all weekend flowed through Iggy and he wasn't even in the anchor seat half the time. Just when everyone was about done making fun of Jared, Iggy would get the ball rolling again and keep the night alive. He was even able to extend the trip via group texts with the high level of humor in his jokes. But when it came to contributing to the hockey part of this trip, Iggy fell short. not that anyone is blaming you. I can't believe you video taped at all. But the fact remains that he's no Brett with the video camera. And he was dreadful with the phone camera. Catching all the games on Saturday and filling up half the memory card with clips of pointless warmups with 1 hockey ball and Brett lip syncing to a Train song, left no room for the games on Sunday which were dramatic and heroic in fashion. Having said all that, B.G.T. and Luke will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Tradition!

34 comments:
The 2015 Play On roster has become let's find 7 guys who aren't busy Memorial Day weekend.

When determining pre-weekend rankings, everything needs to be taken into account.  It's not just your hockey skills, but intangibles.  Well timed jokes by Ward, knowing when to bring out the phone for picture time, and having the better mini van with fabric seats so you don't get all sweaty and gross on a 2 hour drive are all things that contribute to your ranking.

On we go!

8.  Ignads- Easily a top 5 in the fun category.  However countless hours spent on his phone, and the realization that he won't be doing much filming hurts him in the rankings.  His hockey performance will probably rank dead last, since he won't be playing.  Snitches get stitches Iggy, how's last taste?

7.  Nick-  Rumors are swirling there may actually be boards this year.  If that's the case he skyrockets up these rankings.  Otherwise, he's probably ranked too high.  Tough competition this year, he'll be middle of the pack hockey wise, but needs to diversify and expand his conversation topics to more than electrical amperage and Redsox pitching staff woes.

6.  Ron- The lack of zeal for touch football and ditching on Margaritas afterwards is not the start Ron needed for this week.  Expectations are all over the map for this Haverhill Cup MVP, who needs to be firing on all cylinders to crack the top 3.

5.  Ward-  Looked great during some practice drills yesterday, I think I may have even seen him look up to make a pass.  Let's be real, Mike isn't here because of his hockey skills.  If he does manage to score a goal, let's all be sure to give him plenty of positive reinforcement of how good he is.

4.  Brett-  Really has been hurt since he lost control over WPR who has gone into hiding.  Brett is still a safe top 5 pick as he will make sure to laugh at everyone's jokes and point out the weekend scapegoat and demean that person for years to come.  Anything short of A+ goaltending and we will all talk about bad he was behind his back.

3.  Jared-  Not a great night for Jared socially or on the field.  Hey, everyone has off days and with his new joke app he downloaded I feel he will rebound nicely.  He also got BB out of hiding to post this thread, which helped him immensely in the rankings.

2.  Borges- This is his year.  The joy of getting away from his family will not be wasted this year as he will cherish every moment.  He also lost like 2 pounds which everyone is getting way too excited about.  I expect him to be the top scorer and be a great anchor at every restaurant.

1.  Griff- Demoting Griff to defense will really allow him to focus on his jokes and night life.  He also was the only person to score in the finals last year, I mean one of two guys to score in every game, or was it he scored the most in the playoffs, no that wasn't it, well whatever he did I'm sure it was awesome.

Doc Emrick says "Fires!"

16 comments:
Steve -- win percentage: 63%  ,  GAA 3.4, 2 shutouts
Brett -- win percentage: 65%  ,  GAA 3.0, 2 shutouts

I dont see a difference. What’s all the hype about?

You are what you are

Some believed that Team JR were the favorites in this Tournament. But shouldn't we have known better? Its like Felger says “They’re the Bengals! They’re the Bengals! In the end they will do Bengal things!!”

Let’s face it guys, in the end, Johnny Riley teams will do Johnny Riley team things. They always collapse. They always disappoint. Frankly, they are the opposite of a Nick led team. Johnny Riley teams never do better than expected.

So if you’re Johnny, how do you fix this? After disappointing with Eric the last two Haverhill Cups who would you pick with your first overall pick?

How about another guy who has won nothing in the Haverhill Cup? Does that make sense? Its like pairing Mike Mussina and Tony Guinn. Both excellent players but neither ever won anything. Their teams always failed on the big stage. And so too will the Combo of JR and JB. They may have a solid “regular” season. They may even play well enough to justify all the preseason hype. But, in the end, they will fail.

Johnny Riley Teams do Johnny Riley Team things.

Yay obscure baseball references that don't really make sense!

The Regular Season By the Numbers:

Game 1 - (Nick vs JR) - 3-2
Brendon(u),Jared(u),Andrew(Jared)
MVW(u),Elliott(JB)

Game 2 - (Nick vs Ron) - 2-7
Jared(u),Jared(u)
Ron(Griff),Ron(Ignads),Joe(U),Igands(u),Ron(u),Ron(u),Ron(Griff)

Game 3 - (JR vs Ron) - 2-3
JR(JB),JR(JB)
Ron(U),Ron(Grif),Griff(Ron)

Game 4 - (JR vs Nick) - 5-4
Elliott(JB),MVW(JB),MVW(u),JR(u),JB(u)
Nick(Jared),Andrew(Nick),Jared(Brendon),Nick(Andrew)

Game 5 - (Ron vs Nick) - 3-0
Ignads(Ron),Ron(u),Ron(u)

Game 6 - (JR vs Ron) - 3-1
MVW(Elliott),Elliott(JB),JR(Elliott)
Griff(u)

The Best Regular Season Game

Lets put this in the not your finest moment category.

Its game 4. A rematch of Game One. Team Johnny vs Team Nick. Team Nick is clinging to a 4-2 lead. After a cover up by Tony the ball ended up on Johnny’s stick who, stupidly, decided to take a shot on Tony.
Now this is where some people would say “the shot was fired!”

Those people would be wrong.

Its wasn't Ron taking a slap shot. It was Johnny taking a wrist shot. A Johnny Riley wrist shot. Can we be real here? It wasn't a blazing shot. Johnny shouldn't have shot at Tony. It was dumb. It was uncalled for. I thought it was a garbage move.

I actually liked the fire and the over the top reaction by Jared. But that doesn't mean it wasn't over the top.

After Johnny scored on the penalty shot attempt he proceeded to score another goal with a chirping Jared all over him on defense. Embarrassing. The game was tied.

I wanted to move on from that sequence. We still had a game to win. But I ended up coming away more embarrassed than I already was.

I wanted our team to move on, instead I have Brendon two handing JB on the other side of the rink.  Embarrassing.

Game Over. 4-2 Lead blown in 3 plays.

Im ashamed to even have been associated with such an implosion.

But we got our "revenge" in the playoffs.

3. How many times will the rollerblade joke be recycled?

4. What joke will be recycled more: Will Billy wear rollerbaldes? or "The better Driscoll" joke?

5. Can you believe Billy Driscoll bailed?

The Haverhill Cup has become symbolized by Billy Driscoll. It may as well be called the Billy Driscoll Cup.

The Haverhill Cup has become the “Lets wrangle up as many random people with no interest in playing as we can and see if it sticks. If not who cares!! Redrafts!!! Wee!!!”

Reggie is injured? Get out of here!

Zack Leighton is in, no wait…he’s out.

Bobcat? Whose knee doesn't swell up in the middle of the night?

So after all the back and forth we ended up short not only extras but “regulars” too. Only 3 teams this year. But the cup delays for no one!! It can only happen on April 11th!!!!

The Draft

The draft order: Ron, Nick and Johnny

Teams:
Ron, Iggy, Jared, Tony and Joe

Nick, Griff, Brett, Andrew, Frendon

Johnny, JB, MVW, Melo and Elliot

The Consensus:

pastedGraphic.png Jared said...
Nick is the worst captain
April 9, 2015 at 10:37 PM pastedGraphic.png

Nick after looking at this draft you have made the odds now 50/50 to win the cup...for the other two teams!

Two things, am the only one who hears Iggy’s voice (and laugh) on all his posts? I swear I can hear him. Its like reading “The Hunt for Red October” you always hear Sean Connery’s voice.

Second, Taylor Swift was right. The Doubters are going to Doubt.

Nick’s team sucks. Goal tending isn't Important: Yada, yada. The problem was…It made me start to doubt as well...which led to...

The Trade.

In a trade that Im not even sure Ron wanted to do. I think Ron actually loved the story more than the trade.

Brett and Griff were headed to Team Ron and Jared and Tony were on their way to team Nick.

Ok, the stage is set. The Cup 2015 was about to begin.

WEEKLY POWER RANKINGS

27 comments:
4-11-15

The Curse Is Broken (For Griff)

15 Brendon - As the 2nd to last pick in draft, Brendon played like the last pick in the draft. After Griff shattered his arm in six places, Nicks team had no shot at winning the cup. Make sure you send Nick an email letting him know how you feel about today's events.

14 Elliot - Funny how the player Brendon pleaded with Nick to trade for, did little all day. We can only imagine how they would've done on the same team.

13 Melo - He didn't cost his team any game; in fact, he played better than usual. It's just that he didn't win any games for his team. But if I were you Melo, I'd be blaming my team for not scoring enough. But just remember, you still weren't great. Full court, arching goals should never happen.

12 Iggy - He did what he needed to do. He cleared the ball, he blocked shots, and he only over committed leaving the other team with a 2 on 1 overtime game winner once.

11 Tony - Played good till the finals came. Angles were off, had holes in his jersey and dropped that glove nice and low for Griff to take advantage of.

10 Andrew - Nothing impressive. That is, until the playoffs. Andrew was carrying his team and being clutch while all his teammates were spent. Maybe all his teammates should have jogged every game during the season too.

9 MVW - Came flying out of the gate with the first goal of the day but cooled off quickly. What a difference a year can make. From MVP one year, to barely cracking the top 10 the next.

8 Borges - I don't know how much Brendon's slash had to do with it, but Borges didn't take over the game like he could have with his usual shut down defense. At one point he was even belly laughing during play. You might think it's a joke, but going 4 years with no Haverhill Cup victory is an even bigger joke.

7 Joe - The small rink was a blessing for Joe. Too small to go around him and there's no way you're getting through the classic knee slide. Blocking shots all day and chipping in with key goals especially with The GW in the clinching game.

6 Jared - Recounting an event accurately was never Jared's strong suit. With Johnny "firing" the ball at the net and with his shot hitting the "dead center of the net" but more surprising was that scoring goals wasn't his strong suit in this year. He has to be disappointed that his most memorable plays was losing to Johnny in every way after he slashed his stick. But I guess he did get the last laugh.

5 Johnny - He did his job for sure. He scored goals all day and even into the playoffs. One of these years he'll get to the finals. Maybe the year we drop down to 2 teams he'll win.

4 Nick - He had to make the trade. He really did. And Brett thanks you from the bottom of his heart. But Nick stepped up his game by throwing some goals in the ocean (albeit during celebration time) which helped to pick up the slack of his teammates.

3 Brett - He played great. He had some good defense in front of him, but Brett was good at weathering the momentum of the other teams and making sure it didn't amount to anything. Goalies ended up being a bigger factor than I thought. I mean way bigger.

2 Griff - Take that monkey off your back and shoot it in the face. Griff stepped up his game big time. According to Brendon's database, Griff played 843% above his normal quality of play in this years Haverhill Cup.

1 Ron - What a display Ron put on this year. Instead of being buried on defense like last year where Jared wouldn't let him shine, Ron took control, dumped Jared on Nick, and carried his team to glory with goal after goal after goal. Ron was controlling the ball and being so gritty and borderline illegal that It would've made Demaio proud. Unanimous MVP for the 2015 Haverhill Cup.

PlayOn Tournament Accommodation

34 comments:
I want to get some feedback on an accommodation I came across today.

There is a house in the downtown area of Ottawa that has converted 2 rooms into a dormitory style setup. There is a 10 bed room and another 8 bed room. As of today there are only 2 beds reserved for the Playon weekend of Friday-Monday.

So basically both teams could stay there and it's pretty cheap considering most of the downtown hotels are already booked.

Now Jared has found a regular hotel option close to the area were the games are played, however, most of us want to stay downtown where the fun happens. I think it's like a 10-15 minute drive to the Canadian Tire Center where playon is being hosted.

So the purpose of this post is to get feedback on what you guys think. Time is ticking and this option will likely disappear before to long. We could book and cancel it without losing a dime.

Google the Ottawa Backpack Inn to see picks and post your feedback on whether you like the option or not

Re-draft Re-recap

8 comments:
The first round was fast and furious, especially since the first pick was made before the draft even started. With ron texting in his draft plan before he headed off to bed, jared was picked first overall and would carry out his captains wishes from there. Nick took billy second, after hearing he had successful eye surgery. Ward was threatening to take Brett at 3 but thankfully came to his senses and chose Borges instead, leaving Johnny to pick Griff to finish the first round.

The second round started with Johnny taking Brett.......and then the drop off. Ward took Tony, leaving Drew for Nick to scoop up. Thanks to Rons predraft text, Jared was forced to take Joe with the last pick of the second.

The round of the children got underway. Jared chose to have Elliot join the team, followed by Andrew going to team Nick. Ward claimed the last of the children in Austin with his 3rd pick and Johnny's 3rd pick was spent on former Cup winner and shootout MVP Iggy.

Fourth round couldnt have ended quickly enough. Frendon had the honor of being the first of the last resulting in Reggie being thrust into Wards roster whether he liked it or not. Last decision came down to either Jack or Melo. Nick decided that he wanted to got to war with Jack (for now) leaving Melo to be the last "pick" For the second straight draft.

Ron
Billy D
Joe
Drew
Jack

Where Do I Begin?

29 comments:
A great story teller once said, " to tell a great tale, you start at the beginning, go to the end, and stop". So that's what I'll do.

The secret meeting that never happened and wasn't secret at all, led off the night. Frendon thought reinventing the wheel was a good idea. The power of captaincy went straight to his head and seem to have caused some temporal dislocation, Frendon wanted to rule out redrafts, therefore making perfect sense to let Billy Driscoll slide to the forth round because he's 100 percent not going to show anyway and so.....you know....

Yet, even after his quest for a completely different system was debunked, he continued with his faulty logic and it cost him and his would be teammates dearly. If how I explained this doesn't make sense to you, then I described it perfectly. And here is how the draft played out.

The names were crumpled up and thrown into a burton ball cap which happened to be owned by burton. Iggy was blessed with the #1 overall pick in the draft. Followed by Mike Demaio, Frendon and Billy Thomas.

Iggy wasted no time selecting Jared with the first pick in the 2015 draft. Demaio just as quickly picked Borges second.....and here's where it all fell apart. Frendon with the third overall pick, picked the man who was hiding behind his menu. Yes, he picked Michael Vincent Ward with the third overall pick. The reason why he didn't pick Billy changed multiple times as he became more and more aware of his baffoonery. He eventually settled on that "him and Billy don't have chemistry". I kid you not. Ron, Nick, Johnny and Billy were still available. But no. The 9th ranked player skyrocketed up the draft to #3. To round out round one, Thomas took a goalie. Brett Driscoll. He knew all along what he was going to to with his fourth and fifth picks and immediately took Billy Driscoll in the same breath. What a turn of events! A goalie so high? We shall see. I know Ron already doesn't like Thomas' picks, but he's going to like the next pick even less because with the 6th pick in the draft, Ron leger was taken off the board by Frendon. Demaio again had a no brainier with Nick still sitting there. Falling and falling like Douggie Hamilton.

Now for the second hairpin picks. Iggy went with Griffin to sure up the backend. But would he now take a goalie? It was now or wait for the last goalie left. He decided to wait on a goalie and instead went with Johnny Riley in the third round. It was back to Demaio and he scooped up hunky. Now it was back to the enigma. This is where the child named Elliot was taken. Leaving Thomas an obvious pick in Drew and then the other prater they call Andrew. Forced to pick a goalie at this point, Frendon took the ole vet in net, Jackie. Leaving the rest to be automatic, with Austin going to Demaio, and Iggy landing melo.

TEAMS:

Iggy
Billy D
Griff
Andrew
Brett

Demaio
Borges
Nick
Austin
Tony

Frendon
Ward
Ron
Elliot
Jack

Thomas
Jared
Johnny
Drew
Melo

Haverhill Cup 2015 Mock Draft

61 comments:
UPDATE

Rounds 3 & 4
9 MVW – Ward will make it this far, and if he doesn’t, it means that Jared has the ear of his captain.
10 Tony – A proven winner……………… and a proven loser. 50/50 isn’t bad.
11 Drew – Remember when for 3 weeks Drew threatened Nick for the top defenseman in Saugus? And then Jared had to go and ruin it. Unacceptable. But if Drew is what we remember him to be, add one more to the list of players who can move Demaio from the front of the net. Not a bad get here if you’re still looking for a defenseman.
12 Austin – Really only thrives verse Jared. No scoring ability, as he hasn’t learned to shoot yet and the bigger players obviously give him more trouble. But effort could win out in this all day event and I’m picking Austin to be the dark horse in this fun filled friendly day of non-competitive hockey.
13 Jack – It’s a toss-up between Jack and Melo here, but Jack’s experience wins out. It’s fatigue that usually gets to Jack. If you can limit the shots (or maybe throw some early games) you have a chance with him. Could he become the oldest player to win the Cup? (record currently held by Ron Leger)
14 Melo – Inexperience cost him….1 spot anyway. In fact the only reason he’s picked this high is because he has to be picked here due to every team needing a goalie. His smiling after a bad goal could either keep his team loose…… or most likely, with this roster, infuriate them.
15 Andrew – Closer to not being a child.
16 Elliot – A child.

Captains: Frendon, Mike D, Ignads, Billy T

Roster: Borges, Jared, Johnny, Elliot, Andrew, Austin, Drew, Ron, Griff, Nick, Billy D, MVW

Goalies: Jack, Tony, Melo, Brett

Rounds  1 & 2

1 Jared – 2-time champions of the Haverhill Cup are hard to come by, especially since we’ve only had it for 3 years. Frendon might be the only one to pass on Jared with the first pick due to the odds of Jared winning 3 out of 4.

2 Borges – Borges took quite a blow to his reputation on Jan 1 2015. While recent history hasn’t been kind to JB, his overall track record is more than reliable in these kinds of tournaments.

3 Nick – Even if Billy T has the 3rd pick, Nick is worth it. Put him on D and you never have to worry about him. Billy can play some sort of defensive center just like Johnny did year 1 Florida.

4 Billy D – If Billy gets to this spot, and he will, he’s a steal…….potentially. Rollerblades or not his pure hockey skills are unmatched by any others attending this event on April 11th. The only thing to stand in his way is attendance. But can we really be mad at Billy for making us re-draft? Something we all love to do?

5 Griff – This is it! This is the Year! With the deepest draft class in history, Griff will actually benefit from this and not be relied on so heavily for offense and defense.

6 Ron – Usually a year older means a year wiser. But the decision to play in this terrible tournament year after year has me questioning whether he actually is wiser. What we do know for sure, though, is that he’s older. He may still be fat and happy from last year’s championship; not a good thing.

7 Johnny – The Payton Manning of these things. His team usually does great in the opening rounds, but in the playoffs…….Johnny has yet to sniff the finals, or even put up a decent fight in the first round. Maybe now that he’s been stripped of the “C”, he can play his game while submitting to someone else's (Frendon’s) leadership. Johnny is low risk, high reward if he makes it to this point in the draft.

8 Brett – And here we have our first goalie being taken. As Jared always says, Brett’s style fits in with these smaller rinks. And while being the better of the goalies, he’s not enough to win the tournament for a team (none of the goalies are). He tends to lose focus and finds himself wishing he was reffing/videotaping instead of playing.

Hockey this Friday, 7:30 Outside Rink

7 comments:
I have booked the outdoor rink from 7:30-9:30 this Friday.  Three questions:

1. Would everyone rather play indoors this week?  If so the only time slot is from 10:00-12:00.

2. If we stay outdoors do you like 7:30 or do you prefer 7:00?

3. Are you in?

Also, season stats have been updated.
