Keeping with tradition, Ashley, with a little help from Aaron, was forced to determine the order of the draft. Borges got the number one pick in the draft followed by Jared and then Brett.
The best defenseman anyone has ever seen went first to Borges. Trade talks immediately ensued, followed by a full five minute decision on Jared's part to make a pick everyone knew he was going to make anyway. On the hair pin turn Brett took Ron and Johnny proving that Griff not showing up really really hurt his draft position. Just how far would he slide? Jared picked Griff next, with Borges then taking Billy Thomas and Tony. Will Tony be in net or at wing? TBD. Here's where Jared again had to make a tough decision. Take a goalie or take Brendon? He took Demaio. Brett was left with Melo and Brendon while Jared then was given Jack and Borges got Favreau.
So here's the breakdown
1 Nick
2 Ward
3 Ron
4 Johnny
5 Griff
6 Billy T
7 Tony
8 Demaio
9 Melo
10 Brendon
11 Jack
12 Favreau
Ref: Maybe Reggie
But wait the night was not over. Not 10 minutes after the draft was complete a blockbuster trade came to fruition. Trader Jared started flinging offers at the wall and finally one stuck. Jared sent Griff and Jack to Borges for Billy T and Tony. A trade the experts are saying hurt both teams somehow.
Team 1: Borges, Nick, Griff, Favreau, Jack
Team 2: Jared, Ward, Billy T, Demaio, Tony
Team 3: Brett, Ron, Johnny, Brendon, Melo
Stay tuned for more inevitable trades in the next 6 weeks.

Can anyone name the 4 HC MPVs?
Ron Ward Scotty and who cares about that garbage first year
Billy Thomas cares.
I know we won but I forget who was MVP. Was it Brendon?
I think Jared woke up yesterday and realized "Oh crap, I got both Billy AND DeMaio on my team??" No doubt trader Jared is going to make another move.
You won it billy. Your name is forever enshrined on the trophy in sharpie
Draft/Trade Grades
Borges: B/D
There was great potential for his team to take the HC home this year with a team that was overloaded with defensive players. Unlike Nick of past years, Borges is the type of player that could make the defensive strategy work in the tournament. With Nick being able to frustrating everyone but Brett and Borges able to score from anywhere on Melo or Jack and Billy being a nice complementary piece on both sides of the ball leaving favreau to just cover his man at the point and forecheck. Tony would need to make minimal saves most likely from long distances and if any game goes to the shootout, well we all know Tony's shootout record. But Borges couldn't leave well enough alone. Now Griff is a good get, but is he so much better than Billy than Tony is over Jack? Not to mention that goalies can make a huge difference in this tournament. Borges is probably gonna have to deploy the "don't allow any shots on net" defensive strategy now.
Jared: C/A
Ward? So he'll back-check hard a couple times. Is that worth more than someone who can score from anywhere on any goalie? No. No it isn't. But it's all about a comfort zone with Jared and ward. Jared passed on last years MVP. Someone who seems to be getting better with age (in the Haverhill Cup anyway). And picking Demaio in the third round, while in hindsight was the right move, was the wrong move at the time. But Jared read the market better than anyone and somehow rearranged his roster through trades so that no one drafted in the last round is on his team anymore. That is impressive and should not be overlooked. Jared's biggest enemy now is that there's 6 weeks left for trading.
Brett: B+/F
Brett being able to play defense, even if it's not his strength, opened up the ability to take the best offensive weapon in Ron and the second best offensive weapon in Johnny. Brett on defense gives his team something no one else has. Someone who is capable of handling the ball and getting it out of danger without icing it everytime. Not to mention a motivated Brendon creeping around on the forecheck just waiting and baiting the opponents into bad passes that he can pick off by trapping it with his foot so that he can then take it behind the net where he eventually will try a wrap around that has no chance of ever going in. But when a trade comes along where you're offered a 2nd, 3rd and 3rd for a 2nd and in reality a 4th and a 4th you jump on it. Brett didn't. I don't know if it was just pure sportsmanship or if he was worried that the other team wouldn't even show if they had to look at and ponder over their roster for 6 weeks. But Bret may have just blown a golden chance at an easy 3rd HC title. And we all know how Brett loves easy wins.
Imo, Brett didn't draft well.
To me, he needed to let Johnny slide and take Griff. Johnny in a vacuum is a better pick but Brett Ron Griff is the most balanced starting 3. Now you're forced to use either Brett or Johnny out of position.
I don't get the reasoning behind Brett on defense especially against JBs team. Weird matchup against griff playing wing, and Nick and Borges I don't think will have too many problems handling Ron and Johnny. The only time it makes sense is just to ruin my time when I'm playing
If we're going by positions. I should've taken Griff and johnny. A defense and a center with me being a winger. But obviously I wasn't gonna pass on Ron. So I took the best player in Ron and Johnny the only one left capable of playing center (a position I hate). Nick always has problems with Johnny and I'm hoping Ron can score goals in bunches on jack and tony even without jack belan. And yes I'm hoping my speed can negate Ward's and Jared's to some degree. In my opinion offense wins in the HC so I wanted as much offense as I could get.
Can you imagine how many times Griff would've been yelling "get back" while being out there with Ron at wing and brendon at center?
Any hockey this week?
I had called on Tuesday; the only time available was at 9:00. I only want to book it if we have at least 5 on 5.
What we have so far:
John, Nick, Ron, Jared, Melo (G), Joe (G)
Waiting to hear from:
Billy, Mike D, Ward, Borges, John F, Brett
Out:
Praters, Brendon, Steve, John P
John F is in now too:
John, Nick, Ron, Jared, John F Melo (G), Joe (G)
Waiting to hear from:
Billy, Mike D, Ward, Borges, Brett
Mike D and I can play
I can only play Sunday this weekend
Well that might put a damper on it. With Mike and Billy we have 6 with only two more possible players (Brett and Borges):
John, Nick, Ron, John F, Mike D, Billy, Joe (G), Melo (G)
There was availability with the rink for Sunday, but only at 8:00 which I figured would be too late. So unless something changes for Jared then we will probably not play this week or next unless we did Sunday next week which will be tough with our assembly.
If we can get enough people before I leave work then I will keep the rink for tomorrow. Otherwise I'll cancel it for this week.
Should I reach out to the New Bedford guys? Or some people from Billerica/Tewksbury?
Why is next Friday out?
I might be able to play late next Friday (9:00 or later) but I have to help Jamie get things ready for a party she is having for Julianna the next day.
Since I haven't heard from enough definites for today I am going to cancel for tonight. If anything changes then I'll let everyone know. Sunday at 8:00 is open this week but I don't know if we'd get enough guys that late on a Sunday.
Friday night this week let's book it and get people in early
I'm in for that
Would you guys be able to do 9:00? I don't think that I can play any earlier than that this week.
9 on Friday works for me
Maybe we can compromise Johnny and do 8. I'll play whenever but I'm sure Ron will fall asleep waiting for a 9 pm start
I like compromising.
Id like to know ASAP if we are playing
Mike D and I are in
8 sounds good!
Brendon just sent me a text that we are playing hockey friday at 7
For what that's worth...
dont question brendon its booked for 7. Last time slot left
In for 7 or 8 or 9 or 10.
this post is old. move on
