Recap

A complaint is something no one wants to hear. It's the archetype of every annoying word uttered by your mouth. Complaints are vital in society and life, but there is a time and a place for them. During the game is not the time. If you have a problem with the way a play was called or how a teammate has been playing talk about after the game or on the bench...don't waste precious game time. After all, no one is paying to listen to you. Just play the game.

Some food for thought:

Before we recap the games lets break down the "captains" game log:

Brett:

• w/ John - 35 Games • w/ Jared - 13 Games • w/ Jon - 4 Games

Total Games: 59. With top player: 52 Games.

4 of those 7 remaining games vs Jared only (John played net)

Only 3 solo games vs Jared and John (the week John couldn't do anything with the bad back. He also had Dave in net.)

Percentage w/ top player: 88 %

Percentage of games against teams with more top players: 5 % (3 out of 59)

Jared:

• w/ John - 7 • w/ Brett - 13 • w/ Jon - 12 • w/ Scott - 9 • w/ Derek - 5

Total Games: 71. With top player: 46 Games

4 of those 25 remaining games vs Brett only. 1 additional one vs team w/ no top player.

Percentage w/ top player: 65%

Percentage of games against teams with more top players: 23 % (17 out of 71)

John:

• w/ Brett - 35 Games • w/ Jared - 7 Games • w/ Jon - 1 Game • w/ Derek - 3 Games

Total Games: 64. With top player: 46 Games

3 out of remaining 18 games vs Jared only.

Percentage w/ top player: 71%

Percentage of games against teams with more top players: 23% (15 out of 64)

So check out the stats. John and Jared have both have had the same relative opponent levels…it seems as though Brett has taken advantage of his situation. And it shows too. Brett has the second highest win total this season with 43. Who is first you ask? Brendon. Brendon Martino.

So Brett, are you ready for a larger challenge?

*Game 1 was the best game, despite the score not being all that close. It started out as 4-1 lead for the Dark team. The goals came from Brendon, two from Jared and another knuckleball goal from Lee. It seemed as though the dark team was well on their way to an easy victory, but were we on the verge of another game one comeback. “We almost had another” said one scout. It was another fascinating turn of events. The white team managed two quick goals from Dale and Tony (yes Tony was back and he was playing out). The score was now 4-3. So, did another team lead by Johnny manage a game one comeback? “It didn’t happen. The Dark team played solid defense, but I was mostly impressed with their passing game…they played as a team and got the win because of it’ said one astute player. The game was finished off by a clutch goal Mike D. 5-3 Final Score.

*Game two was another frustrating game for the players for the white team. “It was a blowout. I think the game was closer than the score indicated, but it was still a bad showing for the white team” said one scout. It was bad. At the start of game 2 the white actually had Nick in center. Think about that. Nick. Not to be biased but he the team’s only goal. One player said of Nick, “I honestly thought Nick was our third best winger…” I’m not sure if that says more about me or my teammates. Too bad it was the only highlight for the white team as after Nick’s quick goal the dark team took over: Goals from Brett, Brendon, Jared and two from Mike D. “Mike was fantastic, the best I have seen from him…much improved.” It seems as though Mike has lost his trade mark of hitting the post, instead the balls are going in the net. All night the white team were the ones hitting the posts…including John, MVW, and Nick twice.

*Game three was my tipping point. The games were becoming pathetic. Game three included goals from Tony (after the trade for Brendon), two from Jared, one from Lenny (who played a solid game by the way) and another from Mike De Maio. Instead of describing how the dark team steamed rolled the white team again. I’m going to go on rant. First, let me rip Brad. So, Brad how does it feel that Nick (the defenseman) and Tony (the tiger goalie) out scored you this week? Maybe, once people stop talking to you at the sound department, you will have better focus during hockey (inside joke…don’t worry if you don’t understand) Ok, enough about Brad. Jared, can I ask you a question? I just did…hahahaha-that’s for you Jack-Do you know what it means to be off sides? I’m not sure you do. And finally, white team what was up with the full line changes? I have to say…I never liked them but you used them well.

*Game 4 had a final score of 1-0…white team with the lead. So Johnny, Why don’t we count that as a win?

Quote of the week: This is for Jack

Why do they call it a "building"? It looks like they're finished. Why isn't it a "built"?

Ahem, not to toot my own horn, but I did have 3 assists on the night. I believe it was Jared's goal in the second game that's currently empty.

Nick said...

that sounds right Lenny...I thought you had a better week but when I looked at the stats, I wasnt overly impressed. Now I see why.

Brett said...

when there is only three top players that play most weeks, of course i'm gonna be on the team with more top players. Those stats are stupid.

Don't knock me for picking Dave, the draft was fair, i had first pick so i picked him.

brett said...

and your wrong about playing only 3 vs jared and john. i've played 7 verse both of them. A few weeks ago i lost 4 games on the night vs the both of them. You obviously aren't the stat guru

3/5/09

Shut Down D

5 JR - Yeah that’s right, 5th place. Johnny has been regarded as unstoppable. But all it takes is commitment from the D and maybe a little help from the center. JR got some goals, and set up others, but was relatively ineffective. He should have gotten a bigger trade, but it was nice to give the ears a break from the complaining of the loser.

4 Brett - Why put Brett on D? He’s the second leading scorer? . . . . What Now!!!? Brett returned to his roots and didn’t miss a beat. He was able to develop immediate chemistry with Lee and Jimmy and used each effectively to extinguish the offense of the white team. HE EVEN BLOCKED A SHOT!!! First time for everything.

3 Lee - I hope you look at this site Lee, cause this doesn’t happen too often. Lee’s seeing eye goal has become a regular thing these days. And his vision up the middle was outstanding tonight, feeding . . . someone . . . for a breakaway goal. Best game of his career in Saugus by a country mile.

2 Jared - Drunk, tired, lazy . . . . All the things you want in your top scorer. Jared couldn’t help but score goals all night long and in the process, took over second place for scoring. It’s probably cause Griff wasn’t there.

1 Mike D - Welcome to the top Mike. Not too many people get this privilege. Mike had that break out game as was predicted. He buried every chance that he got and his goals just seem to be the most important ones, the ones that won the game before the game winner. Your help on D was much appreciated by all.

This was the toughest week for the rankings, in a good way

Honorable Mention:

Steve - Was one of the main reasons that there were no comebacks this weeks, making clutch saves so that there were no clutch goals.

Jimmy - Was an intricate part in the tree man d team for the dark team. They all did their job.

So Power ranks, are you saying Lee had a bigger impact sunday night than Brett? Inconsistant! What do you rank on? Is it expectations to actual performance or just straight up individual play that night? I want answers!

Weekly Power Rankings said...

yes lee had a bigger impact. Even had more points, and was back for the few times that Brett turned it over trying to rush the zone

Nick said...

Brett, I didnt mean to rip you only, I just wanted to state the facts-it seems that this has been an object of debate. The stats were pulled from the database that has all the stats...i will believe the database over your memory.

John said...

Hey Brett,

Just to shed a little light on that: you are correct that you were playing against Jared and myself that night, but you had Borges on your team for those games. BTW, WPR seemed to take too much pleasure in my ranking this week! I vow a comeback!

FYI, Brendon told me that he assisted on that unassisted goal from Jared. Who do I believe guys? Anyone else remember the play?

brett said...

could borges really be concidered a top player that week? Come on, really?

brett said...

no ramblings this week nick?

Mike D said...

I thought I have 5 goals and 3 assists
1 in game 1
2 in boht games 2 & 3

Lenny D said...

I assisted on 2 of Jared's goals (one from each corner) and one of Mike D's goals (from the left corner)...

Brett said...

nick you believe that data base over my memory? Every week there are complaints over the stats, numbers not adding up and unfinished games that should never had been started(JR). So you really trust it over my memory?

I'm ashamed!!!

I think we need a new score keeper

John said...

Alright, two separate issues here:

First, the numbers that Nick posted came about from a little research that was done. Last week Brett asked how our winning percentages could be so different since it always seemed like we were on the same team...well when looking into the numbers it shows that we are NOT in fact only on the same team...a little bit more than half the time actually.

So during that research I compared what the teams actually looked like. These numbers are completely accurate. The only thing you could argue with would be who would be designated a "top" player this year (players that would be interchangable when we start picking the teams)...but based on skill and experience I don't think you can argue with Scotty, Derek, or Borges. This goes to show that even though Jared faced both Brett and myself more often than having one of us on his team, he still often ended up with other highly skilled players. To be fair though, I wanted to include what the numbers were for Brett and myself.

John said...

The second issue is regarding the accuracy of the scoring.

Brett, I asked everyone a couple of months ago how they'd like to handle incomplete games...they decided it shouldn't count as wins or losses, but only count the stats instead. That is what i did. You have gotten goals that were credited to you that came from an incomplete game as well, but you didn't seem to be too concerned with that at the time! If everyone wants to change the incomplete game rule, I can do that and everyone will lose their numbers...

As for the actual recording of the stats, when Cindy is there and writes the stats down, she does the best that she can. A person just has to get her attention. What we can do going forward is when the team scores that I am not on, whoever is involved let me know who scored and who assisted right then and there. Yell it out, make sure I get it. I will then let Cindy know so that she writes it down. That being said, it's all in fun...we're not professionals, we don't have video to go back to, it's not a perfect system. The goals should always be correct, but occasionally an assist will be wrong. As long as there's agreement on it, we can always go correct it after the fact. Lenny and Brendon, you guys can decide who assisted that goal from Jared and I'll record it. Jared, if you have any input then let me know. But from now on, make sure whoever scored it let's me know so I can make sure that Cindy records it correctly.

Nick said...

no official ramblings this week brett. It was replaced by my "rant". To be honest the ramblings is the toughest to write becuase you need new material, and I dont see/hear everything.

Though, It also my favorite part of the recap.

when are we definitelty done for this year? June?

John said...

Yeah, definitely by June (we'll be playing softball & beach football / volleyball).

Anonymous said...

Mike you did have a goal that wasn't credited to you...I think they gave it to Lenny, when you shot it it went in and came out and i think lenny put it back in and got the goal.

This poll is the story of Brett's life, will always be just a little bit behind Johnny.

Jimmy C. said...

Im gonna stick up for Brett, Nick may have out scored him, but he really neutralized Johnny those first few games(dont deny it John, we all saw and herd the frustration)and we didnt need Brett to score any way, we won 3 complete games and probably would have won the 4th if we had the time(maybe?).
and totally unrelated Im still undefeated on defense, how dont i get credit for that

Brett said...

true john. But we've never started a game knowing we wouldn't finish. Last sunday we did.

Brett said...

and also john when we try ro celebrate and get the scoring right your trying to rush up the ice cause your tired of waiting. Probably cause you were losing, but make sure everyone is in position first befor you try to start a rush

Mike D said...

I'm not sure what goal that was, Lenny will have to say what one that may have been.

tpj said...

i definately remember lenny making two very nice passes to me from seperate corners for goals

John said...

Brett, I actually did wait this week...overall, when the other team scores I want to start the play as quick as possible, but I do want to make sure we get it correct. I don't remember trying to rush it quickly on you guys last week.

Jimmy, Brett played very well on D - he always does. And Jimmy, your winning streak will end soon.

Mike ...It waas late in the third game

I thought like I said I had
1 in game 1
2 in games 2 & 3
I thought my goals in games 2 & 3 were both back to back.

I think I know which one it was.
I took a pass from Brett who was at the right point and I was to the left just above the circle and I one timed it to the oposite top corner (glove side)

Yes everyone, The Real Deal is back! I make my appearance every time I see that the normal bloggers are way off the mark. I believe this was probably one of the best 3 games played at HT. All 3 games were competitive in particular game 1. (Even despite growing concern over the increase in arguments and hitting).
But, let’s talk hockey.

Game 1 I thought was the better for the following reasons: It was classic offense against classic defense. Brendon, Brett, Jared, Lenny & a surprisingly offensive minded defenseman in Lee! Against the seemingly impenetrable defense of Joe, Nick, and Chris. (Um, what were u thinking John?) All the black teams hopes riding on the offense of J.R. & Dale...who could only muster up limited offense, with patented shots and telegraphed passes. There were some spurts in the black team’s offense, series of nice passes involving the whole line. One in particular when Joe n. teeing off 2 monster slap shots in close that Steve just seemed to handle with ease. Yea, Steve played what I believe was his best performance of the year. A big reason for the 3 wins. But, at the other end of the rink Jack had one of his poorest performances. A big reason for the 3 losses. Hey it happens to everyone. You can't always have a good game. So, all I'm saying is that 'goaltending' ...not even mentioned by you bloggers... was a big reason for the final results.

Game 2: All 3 games were pretty much the same scene. Only that the white team grew consistently stronger w/ their passing, hitting, and verbal competitiveness while the black team grew consistently more tired (this happens when the average age of 5 of them is 30 something) resulting in loss of strength and sloppier passing. Easy goals continued to be a backbreaker whenever the black team could muster up some offense. Forcing John to switch up what I believe was the black teams only strength...defense! Moving Joe and Nick up to offense and Dale & Mike back to defense. A move I don't agree with since I've always preached that defense creates the offense. (Mike and Dale are better on offense than defense)Especially when goaltending was the issue that night.

Game 3: Here both Lenny and Mike D. were the unsung heroes. They played their positions to a tee, picking up right where they left off in game 2. Lenny created lots of opportunities out in front, twice leveling Joe resulting in 2 nice assists. Jared & Mike D. were exploiting the lack of coverage in the slot. Despite trading for Brendon the black team never really mounted any threat. Steve continued stopping the majority of the shots he faced and proved to be the backbone of the white team.
Now for my top five:

5. Lenny ... abandoned the floating technique and got involved. This got you more assists then goals but well worth the W.

4. Mike D. ... Watch out for Mike, he'll be in the top 3 next week I know it.

3. Jared ...Outplayed every one this week and out coached John in the process.

2. Lee ... He looked 10 years younger out there. He did it all himself on D.

1. Steve ... Cat like reflexes against 3 Great shooters, Dale John and Joe. Cementing the wins for the white team.

Lenny D said...

I can't argue with that top 5. But Steve wasn't the top star. I think Jared played his best game of the year.

WPR put Johnny at 5 when his team lost all 3 games. I believe that there were 5 better players on the white team last week than JR. Just my opinion...

Anonymous said...

Lenny, you are correct sir!

Anonymous said...

JR was still a big contributer even though he was up against Brett on D and Steve in net. he made a bigger impact on the game more than anyone else not on the list. Steve could have been there too i guess, but it was a wash i think. How many shots did he face?

But Jared gets #1

Anonymous said...

ya Jack definately got a bad review, he faced double, if not more, shots than steve did. Steve played great midway through game two and game three.

Dark team had the best games of the year from Lee, Mike D, and even Jimmy. Brett and Jared played great as usual too.

The Real Deal said...

Jared definately played one of his best games and easily could have made no. 1 again, but with Jack having the kind of bad game he had any shot on net had a good chance of going in and Jared sure had his share. True that Steve faced maybe what 20 shots all night. But at least 15 of them should have gone in. And if they did the top 5 probably would have been on the black team. Now just like when you carry the puck on the attack whats the first thing you should do? In this situation many coaches say "3 passes before the shot" for a reason. They want you to LOOK around to see what your options are, who's breaking with you? See the whole rink.
Now, when looking at the big picture, Lee comes into focus. Again It was a differant Lee out there and you gotta recognize! You see now, without Steve and Lee THAT NIGHT Jared couldn't have had what I agree was one of his best games. Thats why I put him third (order of importance to the teams win) Unfortunately for Jared, he cant always get the number one spot.
P.S. I guess you could say I am a fan

Jimmy C. said...

Hey Anonymous whats with the "even Jimmy" having his best game.Is everyone that surprised when i play well, especially on D, i mean Im willing to admit I've had a few shaky games in net but i think my D has been consistently solid.

and Johnny Im sure it will end, but just let me enjoy that stat while it lasts

Jimmy, I think your a pretty good defenseman. I like playing D with you...Don't know what they're talkin about.

Hey Jimmy you need to read context. It was quite clear to most that Mike D and Lee had their best games of the year. However, it was an additional point i wanted to bring out that i felt you as well had your best defensive game of the year because we all focused in on the great games Lee and Mike had.

I'm sorry i didn't gift wrap your compliment better.

Helpful tip #1: You will probably gain the most from experience - the more you play, the better you will be at it. You don't need to study film, or listen to technical advice from blowhards on this site. That won't help you improve your game very much, unless you are remakably able to do everything you are told, regardless of any physical limitations it might impose.

Helpful tip #2: Don't listen to anything Jared, Brett, or Bradley says. They're not really trying to help you. They're just having fun with you.

Helpful tip #3: It's just a friendly game (or so we try to keep it), so there's no reason to get upset over anything said. Brush the dust off and ignore negative comments.

Helpful tip #4: Admit it when you have weaknesses and move on. Try to improve upon them any way you can, but don't expect some player to be able to help you turn your game around overnight. Just work on the little things (smarter passes, etc.) and take it one game at a time.

Helpful tip #5: Have fun and forget about this and all previous posts immediately after reading them.
