Do you qualify as a "substantial" player?

Possibly. But it depends on when the question is asked. I sure Chris changed the perception of his skills after his performance last night. Perhaps even to the extent where he is drafted higher this coming week. In contrast, Nick may go down in the "draft" after his performance. And here lies the underlying problem. Every week it’s the same thing. It’s like clockwork. Brett, Johnny and Jared do their thing. And we have no idea what to expect from everyone else. (Well, we know Brendon will “butt check”, Dale will try backhanded shots rather than pass and Brad will have a blue mouth guard…but I think you know what I mean). “We” are unpredictable in performance.

It’s time someone else steps up. I’m calling us all out-including myself. We are inconsistent. We like to make the same mistakes over and over again. I guess you can say it’s our forte. How about we change that? Ok…my rant is over…I’ll ramble later…but first a short recap.

*Has anyone else ever noticed that the typical first game in Saugus is always very long? Too long. It happens every week. The first game is just as long as the final few games combined. Well, game one of the night, of the season, was no different. The game started off with a 4-2 lead for the Dark team. It looked like Johnny's team was going to start the year with a win. The Dark Team managed to get goals from John, Brendon and two goals from PPP. (Where did that nickname come from anyway?). The first two goals from the white team were from Brett (assisted by Matt S and Nick). Brett was keeping his team in the game. He gave his team the chance for a comeback. "He must have been on an emotion roller coaster with everything going on around him...but it didn't show, he was clutch", said one teammate. But it didn't end there for Brett, he also had the third goal for the white team bringing his team within one. Soon there after a goal from Jared (assisted by Brett) put the game at a 4-4 tie. Johnny's team was about to blow the game. Minutes went by, each team was playing solid defense. But eventually one team had to crack...it was a pass by Joel to Jared for the goal that ended it. Game 1 of the 2009 season was epic.

*Game 2-the baby is still not here. In game two the tables were turned against Brett's team or the white team...whatever we were called. The white team had a 4-1 lead with goals from Brett(!), Dale, Jared and Joel. The dark team countered with a goal from John Riley. This game should have been in the bag. But for whatever the white team collapsed. But after goals from John, Brendon and Ron, the momentum had already turned. When a team blows a 3 goal lead confidence is never high. But no one expected what was about to happen to actually happen. "Look, when i watch him play I have no idea what he is going to do with the ball...I'm not sure he knows what he is going to do. But sometimes that can work to your advantage", said one scout of Shane H. Shane had the game winner (assisted by Griff). Wow...Shinning moment in a short career.

*Game 3- Brett started to be overcome with the feeling of fatherhood upon him. Yep, Brett left and Joel followed. So a trade was needed. Well it was more of a take I guess. Jared took Mike D away from Johnny and game 3 was to begin. But game 3 was the Chris Young show. "Man, he was great. Gritty on defense. He fought hard for the puck. He even came up and played a little offense", said one player. It was highlighted by a great give and go to Jared for a goal. But Chris's play was overshadowed by another win by the Dark team. The final score was 5-2 Dark despite the white team, at one point, having a 2-1 lead (remember that impossible shot by Jared?). Game 3's star was Ron with 3 goals...

*Game 4-You got to see the baby! Sorry about that...i watching Seinfeld on Leno...i needed to put a reference in here somewhere. Before game 4 we had yet another trade. Nick was traded from the white team to the dark side for Griff (though Griff didnt realize it until 10 mins into the 4th game) Griff made an impact while he was on the other side. Creating offensive plays for his new team. On the other side of the coin, Nick played 5 mins and never played again. I blame Jimmy. Jimmy how many times are you going to get the ball and play with it? Just stop it! you're playing with fire and may have cost you a win in the last game. The final score was 5-3 Dark (yes! I stole a win!). The last goal was scored by Brendon after a bobble by Jimmy.

Nick’s Ramblings

Brad and Matt S: I’m sorry that you were getting ripped publicly about getting the ball out of zone. No Dale, I didn’t forget to say sorry to you. Btw, I was reading the archives last night, and I noticed that Dale made a post…was that really him? LINKY. If you notice in that post was another blow up by Brendon. It certainly doesn’t take much prodding to get him going. Do you think he is reading the blog again? No posts in a while…Is it pathetic that I had to look up my last recap to figure the format? I forgot how to set one up. Hey Jimmy, no slap shots from the net…just cover the ball! Almost gave me a heart attack. Reggie! Are you alive??? Where did you go? We put you on a team (per your request) and you didn’t show…are you still in the fetal position? Maybe next year? Lenny we missed you! It would have been nice to have Chris’s brother here….come on that was clever. Griff, how is the knee, the thigh, and the balls? Again, sorry about that. I honestly have no idea where my shot is going. I did this really quick...hope the spell check caught my mistakes...no re-reading on this post!

Brett tells me all that he saw and then i rank everyone. So yes, the last two games weren't taken into concideration.

But Brett also tells me that they are all doing great. Gabe was Born at 7:57 last night (around the time of Brady's interseption) And he's already in Canadiens clothes.

Griff said...

YAY. I got the game winner in game 2 not the assist!!! Shane passed it to me.

John said...

Griff, I know it went five-hole on Steve. From where I was it looked like Shane had shot it...you actually shot that one?

John said...

WPR, tell Brett, congratulations to both him and Ariel! Have him take pictures of Gabe once he has some "real" clothes on.

BTW, How'd they come up with the name Gabe? I guarantee if they had gone to either our hall or Brendon's that they might have decided differently!

Congratulations to both Brett and Ariel. Welcome to Parenthood!

Your lives are now changed forever... but that’s a good thing :)

john is that supposed to be a reference to the gabe that is 500 lbs and has a red beard and thinks he is of the annointed? He's a nut-job alright.

I think someone was impersonating griff on that post because shane got the goal clearly.

John said...

That's exactly who everyone from our region thinks of when they hear the name Gabe.

Don't worry though Brett - your son will not turn out that way...well providing you don't mess with his mind and put your pink Canadiens jersey on him.

PPP’s Personal Assistant said...

PPP is short for the Professor. To get the full definition of the acronym, you’ll have to do some homework. i.e. look back in the blog archives.

PPP is a master of many things, but playing hockey is not one of them! Get it right and stop messing with his legacy.

He is a master of writing, critiquing and creating controversy. The professor not only wrote ‘game recaps’. He wrote about game changing plays that we could laugh about, talk about and laugh some more.

For instance, the game changer of all game changers, that is burned into our minds, “Ariel Takes Out Brendon- Sending Him Flying End Over End”.

The controversy… Brendon replies, “guys, I let up or I would of killed her. I’m not going to hurt a girl”. Hahaha ok boss. What were other the players gameplan? If Ariel plays… she pays just like everyone else. For instance, in front of the net, master Ron elbowed Ariel in the face and on another play, incidental contact knocked her down”. PPP interviewed Ron after the game. His quote, "She's a player, holds her position and doesn't back down". PPP then asked Ron to comment on the, should of been penalty call. Ron's reply, I apologized to Ariel by saying, “Are you alright? Sorry about that”.

Anyways... Triple P is vacationing in Tahiti right now. But I sent him the tape...

PPP’s quick hit from Sunday night. Who Can Teach Jack How to Score From the Point? I’ll give you a hint, 2 players whose first initial begin with ‘B’. Oh and sorry Brett, you’re not one of them

Even though it wasn't PPP himself that posted, it was a low level assistant. I know firsthand that they run an extremely tight ship. He is not one to make mistakes.

If there was a mistake, you can count on TripleP himself posting a retraction.

I think it was Brendon and yes Bradley, who both, notched goals from the point. Way to go guys, when does class begin?

Anonymous said...

I think at least oneof those goals was actually from about center ice not the point though

Anonymous said...

nick i was reading your linky from the recap page and it was all about that interference call that brendon claims was legal and john says would not be allowed in saugus. did that ever get resolved as to what rule stands and if it is allowed or not? just wondering

Anonymous said...

You guys don't play the blue lines, so anything inside the center line would be considered the point, sound reasonable... you Bozo :)

Anonymous said...

no we dont play the center line the same way they play the point in ice hockey. the point is somewhere between the center line and the blue line.

Anonymous said...

perhaps if our defenceman were as good as nhl defenceman then we could play the center line as if it were the point but they arent that good at keeping it in the zone

An education in futility. Luv it Luv it Luv it

But Lenny, you look so much alike!

John said...

Joel has to chisel the rust off of his game, but I thought he looked pretty solid out there - he's got very good hockey instincts.

I'll put the over/under at 4 weeks before he scores 5+ goals.

John said...

BTW, I thought a few people stood out this past week that didn't get mentioned in the earlier comments:

Matt S - battled hard all night. Wasn't flashy offensively but I thought was solid overall.

Jack - couldn't really hit the net with his shot, but was pretty steady back on D, especially from Game 2 on. Could give Joe a run for his money if he played enough this year.

Brad - Not a mis-print! Granted, I didn't play on his team so I my observation is a little different, but he was much stronger on the puck on Sunday than he was at any time last year. That's something he'll keep needing to work on if he's going to improve.

Tool Time with the Tutor said...

If anybody wants to improve their individual game, then listen up and follow directions.

Stick Handling with your head up, yes even for an old timer like Ron, is easy to do if you practice each time you come to play.

Start by standing in one spot, practice stick handling with your head up. If you can do this without losing the ball, then begin moving forward and backwards. Once again, with your head up.

Once you are comfortable, you can start to stick handle the ball, not just from side to side, but from top to bottom.

Why is this important?

Because often times when an opposing player attempts to knock the ball away, you need to PULL the ball back to avoid losing it. In addition, when you can effectively stick handle (both in tight, and to the extent of stick reach), you will be able to pull off those moves that you see the elite players doing week in and week out.

Finally, the obvious other benefit is for your teams sake. You can look for open guys to pass to. Look for open areas to move into for a shot. No need for blind passes.

As my good buddy would say, "don’t be searching for quarters". Keep your head up and you’ll see your game steadily improve.

PS... this Tool Time Tip from the Tutor is for personal use only. You are not authorized to reprint, redistribute or rebroadcast this information without passing the approved stick handling home study course, which is not available in stores.

Anonymous said...

who has the hardest shot? (wrist shot & slap shot)

not the most acurate, but hardest?

who when you see them wind up do you now want to have it hit you?

Meat ball or curve ball said...

I’d have to see a person shoot 5 straight times to determine if their mechanics are hurting their shot accuracy and or speed.

I’ll say this about shot mechanics. When you shoot, if the ball curves, then you are doing a lot of things well. A few tweaks, for consistency, and you could have a Skippy Fin Fin shot in no time.

If your slap shot doesn’t curve. Then it’s back to the basics. You must get a basic wrist shot down pat, and it’s easy to do. A good wrist shot starts with good wrist movement. Once you get the feel of how to consistently move your wrists, you can then add the element of torque, which is generated from your torso. Your shot will be more accurate with more speed. Once you nail these two essential point... your ready to apply them to snap and slap shots.

I don’t believe any of us have reached our full potential and further believe a lot of coaching is needed.

But to be honest, some very easy to implement, basic coaching drills would help bring up the level of play tremendously.

Anonymous said...

I agree that nobody beats scotty for hardest shot.

Wanna know the easiest test? Shoot from one end of rink. The shot that stays at about 2-3 ft high all the way to the opposite end is the winner. Anybody that can keep the ball under 2 feet the whole length of the rink is deadly for sure.

Anonymous said...

top 5 fastest guys

1. johnny

2. mike d

3. matt s

4. danny

5. joe

brett and jared can handle the ball which makes them look faster.

Anonymous said...

shooting it 20 ft in the air and out of the rink doesn't mean a hard shot. (sorry nick and joe)

Brett said...

who cares who has the hardest shot. Zdeno Chara has the hardest shot and has never scored more than 20 goals in a season.

The thing is that in street hockey the harder the shot the less accurate it is cause it curves more. Plus you don't have to have an overpowering shot with goalies who can't stop shots that are rolling on the ground. That's why JR scores so much. Not the hardest shot but very accurate. He doesn't try to kill the ball everytime he hits it like Nick does.

Anonymous said...

Yeah but when Nick gets the accuracy along with his power his shot is going be a serious weapon

What harder working on power or accuaracy?

Wait a minute, didn't he play D for all to see
Don’t know if I agree

But where were the cool goggles
That he once wore as boondoggles
O where O where could they be

Wait just a minute, I noticed a new gimmick
It’s a new pair of gloves that he positively loves
Yes, he wears two pair if you were not aware

He finds his spot for the backhand shot
He battles for the ball and awaits the call
He gets into scuffles, even with the ruffles
He plays with passion and sports the fashion
Who can complete when we see such a treat
Always raising the bar, what a shining star!

Way to go you gamers, keep those heads turning :)

It's Big Board...yada yada yada...on we go!

1. Ron- PPP partied like it was 1999 last sunday with 8 goals. He eats goalies for breakfast, literally.

2. Jared- Had white teams only GW and was hustling throughout the night. Beginning to have the oakland raider reputation with people leaving the team or not reporting when traded.

3. Brett- Baby or no baby Brett left his team and not even Jared's complaining could do anything to stop what happened after. Star of game one though.

4. J Riley- BB talked up Riley all preseason and thought there was a let down. Ron stole the show on johnny and the board has a reputation to uphold.

5. Griff- Game 3 ends, white team got blown out, time to make a trade. Nick for Griff. Great deal, only problem is half way into game 4 we still see him on the dark bench. Thanks johnny.

6. Chris- Top defensemen sunday night and has jumped into the 6th spot. Nick was just awful sunday, oh wait i'm not there yet.

7. Brendon- Since he obviously doesn't read this anymore, i can say anything about him...he may have scored 4 goals, but he still tried to tape his hamstring in place.

8. Joel- Has a long way to go in his comeback to street hockey, but the passing was there along with the excessive sweating.

9. Dale- Everyone should rate their play at saugus to dale. Ask yourself, am i more valuable than Dale? The answer is probably not.

10. Mike D- wasn't a strong night for him, 0 goals is not gonna cut it.

11. Nick- The only thing worse than his play was his recap, and for that he is banished to outside the top 10.

12. Jack- Had those 50 ft flip outs working and a nice accurate wrist shot from the point. some call that the jack attack.

13. Shane- everytime shane scores it's a game winner, and that is a fact.

14. Brad- Was connecting with Ron all night, good passing.

15. matt s- I'm not done talking about Nick. Did any shot come within 20 ft of the net? I think hte hype went to his head from montreal.

Now I have something to do
let's get ready for week 2

What's in store for poor little Jared
I'm sure John will be in his head

Will we see new dad Brett
Will arial let him go yet

will Jimmy be in net
another performance we'll want to forget

What will we see from John
his first pick will be ROn

Who will be back on D
A pair of guys name Lenny

we hope Brad does improve
or new sport maybe he'll choose

with Joe we'll see the knee slide
into a slap shot one day he'll glide

I can't forget about poor little Nick
he has improved control of his stick

Dale was afraid of a thing call mold
there is a thing called detergent, or weren't you told

Then we'll see the return of Steve
will it be Jack or Jimmy that he'll relieve

We all love Bredon "the coach"
it's as annoying as seeing a cockroach

How could I forget my main man Lee
hope to see you back on D

don't forget big Reggie
or will he say "Nah, I'm to sleepy"

We all love the toughness of Griff
similiar to a character named Biff

Dan does have some speed
a little more practive is what you need

Shane barely says a word
it's ok to talk, or haven't you heard

Were will Mike be
think John will keep him on D

Don't worry this won't be the last
writting these is kind of a blast

Johnny's game is always the same
that's why he's reached high acclaim
How the heck does he score so much
Johnny would say it's nothin but clutch

TPJ likes to stir up the bunch
Always delivers the knock out punch
The kid can score goals like a machine
And even has the looks of a young James Dean

Ron only plays every once in a while
but who doesn't like that kinda style
What can you say about that shot
Except ofcourse that we all like it alot

Here comes Brett ready to play
He says his wife said ok
Their son was born the very next day
Congrats to all I'd like to convey

The Nick that writes has fans that accrue
But during the game that number is few
He got plenty of questions
Just needs some suggestions

In only 2 more days
its time to amaze

Then we do it once more
just as before

Sometimes when I read Nick's ramblings, Actually most of the time... I think I'm reading the ramblings of a junior high school girl who didn't make the cheer-leading squad. He goes on and on about very small things that mean so little in the whole scheme of things. Ex.= I tried one backhander all night instead of passing the ball and he writes like I did it all night. I call an off-sides another night, which I rarely ever call, and also which was accurately called, and he rambles on about that forever and a day like it changed the world of hockey as we know it. Funny he didn't notice I was open 4 different times in front of the net that night when a certain player (which I will leave nameless) did not pass the ball to me on any of those 4 consecutive opportunities but instead tried to go it alone and failed miserably. I didn't say anything to that player...I just kept playing. We all make the wrong play sometimes. Nick never notices those other plays, though. My main point is this.... I don't think little school girls diaries are full of as much petty crap as we have on this website. These are just pick up hockey games, that's all. The attention given to the things that goes on at the games starts to get ridiculous. It stirs undue competition and bad feelings. Lets try to get a grip and enjoy ourselves and stop calling people out for little meaningless plays that occur during the course of a game of fun. There is no Stanley Cup involved and none of us gets payed to play. Everyone should give an honest effort and than when the game is over..come back to reality and worry about real issues like the economy and your Family's health, etc. instead of worrying if someone passed the ball to you on one play. I hope Nick didn't lose any sleep over it. I know I didn't lose any sleep thinking about those 4 other plays where I wanted a pass and didn't get one.

I won't mention who it was, but, I can certainly guarantee it wasn't you I was talking about, Brett. You and I are never on the same team, unfortunately.
I will also say for the record that it wasn't Jared, Mike, Matt, Ron or Nick either. Does that help narrow it down a little? Last clue, I like this brother as a player and a person, but, I don't like how he sometimes calls me out for not making a pass to him sometimes when he almost always never passes to me the whole game every time he is on my team. I could be wide open and have a perfect shot on net and he could have 5 guys on him and he will try to stick handle by them instead of pass it to me. He would rather have all his fingernails pulled out with plyers than pass the ball to me. He doesn't seem to notice that he is a bigger offender of not passing than me and yet he calls me out occasionally and I never call him out.
