In for Sunday.

Out for the Haverhill Cup.

Brett said...

Frendon why the ...? just say whether you can make it or not on Sunday. We don't care about the reasons why you can or can't or that you don't want to play 4 on 4 or whatever it is. My goodness it's not that complicated. In or out.

I'm in for both. See how easy that was? Maybe you could ask Billy how he makes it look so easy.

Update on stats: I was having trouble generating some of the normal ones that I do for the season stats (got some work to do to fix it), but I've emailed Nick the scoring and goalie related stats for this past week. So hopefully he can post them tonight.

Nick said...

im a maybe for both days...

:)

Nick said...

um billy!!!!!!!!

you're not coming to defend the trophy!!???!!!

Brett said...

No kidding! I think it's worth a sick day

John, I added what you gave me. There was some formatting issues that I had to fix.

Id rather not have to fix/find issues everytime(is this the only time?) I have to post the stats.

We need to go over that next time I see you.

Also, I hope the update to follow has more than just goals...lol.

Mike D said...

John,

I had a goal from Brett
I think it was the last game

Nick said...

i think he only did top 5...i also had a goal.

top shelf. :)

John said...

Yeah, the stats I gave nick were longer than what you see, and you guys were both on there. Something must have gotten lost in the email.

Since the page has been started I can update myself later tho.

i talked to casey, who runs dracut, and he said he's still working on getting a team to move to thursday. if he cant get one he said he would just have 11 teams and have a bye week. i used saugus as leverage so he really wants us to play there. he said it could take a week or two to get everything worked out. i'll keep you guys posted.

Billy the Kid said...

I wish I could take a sick day, but I dont usually work on Saturday. I have to go to a special all day class. I cant call in sick for that.

Trust me, I'd rather be playing hockey ......

Brett said...

Billy, if you can convince everyone to skip then they can't fire all of you.

Nick said...

saugus as leverage...lol.

Brett said...

cup hangover for the B's. I'm gonna jump to conclusions. I say they miss the playoffs.

John said...

It's looking like not enough people for Sunday. The only one that's out for sure is Jon and Joe, but I haven't heard from enough other people. The only ones definitely in so far would be me, Brett, Billy, and Steve (and probably Darrin). That's three plus goalies.

Nick and Frendon haven't committed (Frendon also being responsible for Elliot).

I haven't heard from Jared, Mike W, Mike D, Johnny S, Brad, Griff, Bobcat or Dale. I guessing that Griff will be lazy due to the Pats-Jets.

If we had only ten then instead of playing with no subs we could try splitting up into three teams like I mentioned earlier in the week.

Something like Team 1: John, Elliot, Nick, Brad

Team 2: Brett, Frendon, Mike D

Team 3: Jared, Mike W, Billy

Games up to ten minutes, or 4 goal deficit. Then winning team stays on, other team jumps in. Winning goalie stays with winning team until they lose. It would be interesting as prep before the Haverhill Cup.

Of course if we had twelve plus guys we could play with just two teams like normal. As of right now though I won't book the rink for this week unless I hear from at least ten guys.

Reggie said...

Im out for the cup, and totally bummed... My dad is in town and im taking him out that day

Dale said...

I can probably arrange to play Sunday if there's enough people.

JB said...

i cant do the 15th either and jared told me he was out that day so we might need to do another day. and we need billy and reggie!

Billy the Kid said...

Lets do Haverhill cup on the 22nd then!

Mike D said...

I'm out the 22nd
In for Sunday

Nick said...

John, I was mocking brett by being noncommittal (did you note the :)???)

As long as we have the guys I'll play.

Jared said...

I'm out for Sunday

Haverhill cup must happen, next Saturday will be tough for me cuz I'm moving but I think I can get most of it Monday and play if people are in, but maybe push it off till 29 or 29

John said...

Unfortunately too many people had pats viewing plans so no hockey this week (unless we wanted to play vs the guys from last week). We will plan hockey next Sunday instead (16th) and then Haverhill cup the week after...

Nick said...

i love that gif. Hilarious.

after she freaks out and runs she puts her hands/arms in position.

a pro to the end baby.

Brett said...

why haven't stats been fixed yet? I want to see my name at the top of the list

John said...

Nick, what gif? I wasn't going to fix them till after we played this week, but since we are not I will fix on Monday.

Nick said...

i added it to this post...at the bottom.

Brett said...

Jared, just a quick question. When you suggested we have set teams for a month, did you think that me and Johnny would never end up together for a month? Your complaint last Sunday was that me and Johnny we on the same team, It's gonna happen, especially if you want set teams for a month. I know we're together more than most, but it was only the first week and your suggestion to keep those teams for a month would just make you complain every week for a month

Brett said...

stats!?

And johnny, don't forget to add my assist from last year that i never got credit for

JB said...

hey guys i talked to the guy who runs dracut and we will be on the schedule for next monday the 17th. i dont know what time yet but i want to get a feel for whose in. its in dracut. its a new rink and its real nice. the refs in this league are a lot better and the guys arent hacks(mostly). who can play.

John said...

Sorry Brett, I've been in meetings for a large part of the day trying to replace an employee that is leaving. I will finish generating them tomorrow. Remind me though about the assist. I remember that from last season but remind me the specifics?

As for Dracut, I'm in with whatever everyone wants to do. Either way I'd still like to do Saugus at least once every three to four weeks.

As for this week, I've posted on this blog so let me know who's in...

Brett said...

1 assist. Thats pretty much as many details as i can give.

And this is your reminder. Just look at this page tomorrow to remind yourself.

JB let me know if you guys start blowing out the other teams. If you do then i'm in.

See, facebook is good for something. Thought you guys might like to do this.

Nick said...

Im in for both.

Brett said...

why not just plan on Saugus for the first sunday of every month? that'd keep it simple. And if not enough can make it then just hold off till the next month's first sunday.

John said...

Brett, I'll probably end up doing something similar to that. For this month we'll plan this Sunday and then figure out the date for next month in a couple of weeks.

John said...

I don't mind the Lawrence one you posted but that's the same date as the Haverhill Cup. So we'd have to choose pretty quick which one we want to do...

Brett said...

first place prize is 250 bucks!!! that's a whole 20 dollars each!!!

I guess it depends on how many we get to play. If we only get 12 guys and 1 goalie that only leaves us 1 choice. but if we get 20 guys like last year, then we could do the haverhill cup. I personnally would rather do the haverhill cup.

Brett said...

i forgot to mention free pizza too

Jared said...

I've been informed our one day assembly is on the 22nd so I may miss the Haverhill cup once again. If we don't have a game Monday night I'm in for Sunday. Otherwise I'm not sure.

Nick said...

the poor haverhill cup...

brett, that "prize" basically pays the entry fee.

Billy the Kid said...

Im in for everything.

Billy the Kid said...

Correction. The only thing I cant do is hockey this Sunday night. I have my very special day on sunday.

Brett said...

is it your birthday?

John said...

I texted JB and he said Monday is definite this week. So for the time being Sunday night Saugus will go down to once a month.

Now with Jared (and I'm presuming Mike) out for the 22nd do we still have the Haverhill Cup on that day? I'm thinking our best option might be playing this Sunday @ Hockeytown and making it three teams.

Getting goalies shouldn't be a problem (Tony can play, Darrin I'm guessing is likely, and either my father or Steve).

The winning team from last year can stay together (Billy, Brett, Brendon). Either myself or JB will get Darrin/Griff or Tony/Jared. Those two teams would each get two of the next available (maybe Mike D, Mike W, Joe, Bob, Brad, Joel, Elliot, Dale, Chris Y, Lenny).

We could rent the rink from either 6-8:30 or 6-9. Games can be ten minutes long, 5 minutes between games.

This will help alleviate issues with schedules / rain that we seem to be having trouble with on Saturday afternoons.

Thoughts?

John said...

Obviously Nick is on that first team too...

John said...

And I'm guessing that if it's the Haverhill Cup there's more of a chance that Billy and Mike can make it after their assembly.

Nick said...

what's the point of a running list that doesnt get updated? As far as I can see John is still the only one "in" for anything.

whats the point of a weekly stats page if the stats only get updated every 4 weeks? (half of them btw) If the stats are "done" but never updated, did they actually happen?

what's the point of naming our "tourney" the haverhill cup when it took place in the ghetto last year and now you want it in Saugus this year?

And I have to ask. What can we expect from Saugus? Keeping Saugus going (is "alive" a better term?)is a great idea. The premise is fantastic actually, Im just not sure how realistic its going to be. And thats with the full understanding that this league may or may not work out.

Like it or not we lost guys for Sundays and I cant imagine we will start to get enough (never mind plenty) on a "once a month basis" when several of our regulars will be playing the day after anyway.

I'll be the first to admit it, I loved playing in Saugus. I wish it could continue, Im just having a really hard time picturing us keeping enough guys to keep it going.

If we get enough guys I'll be there. But I'd be shocked if we do.

So I guess the answer to the question is "not much"...can you give me a reason to expect more?

Nick said...

correct me if Im wrong John, but wouldn't renting Saugus for 3 hours or so be costly?

It wouldn't really bother me but, again, not the best way to attract more people to come.

John said...

nick to answer your questions:

1. I haven't updated the list since I haven't heard any definites from people. Jared and mike have their assembly next Saturday, plus no darrin. So I am Billy and mike have it this Sunday. So I am trying to see who can play when, at which point I can update the lists.

2. I spent the time last week updating the database for the stats. I have a couple of changes left to make, but couldn't get the time at work the past two days. Of course one weeks worth of stats is statistically not very relevant so it will help once we play some more games.

3. My idea originally was to have the Haverhill cup in Haverhill, but everyone liked the Lawrence rink better. Yet people still called it the Haverhill cup.

4. Unfortunately we've lost people over the years due to 3 main reasons: moving, personal circumstances, and Brett. Still, we have enough to play albeit maybe not every week (we never played every week in the past when we first started).

To me, playing pickup on Sundays is more fun. Nothing beats a tourney. But pickup proves to be more fun than a league, at least to me. Each league we do always has us aggravated at it by the end. Is the level of play better? Absolutely, its not even close. But i love playing hockey in general - even just taking shots on a goalie. And what we did with the stats just added to it. People have lost sight of just playing with friends and having a good time. Instead they take themselves too seriously.

Over the years i haven't had fun every week in Saugus, but that's part of sports. By and large it was still a blast. So while we might not play there regularly each week this year, we can still play on a reduced schedule and have a good time...if guys don't lose sight of playing for fun.

Nick said...

Hmm...these two thoughts stuck out to me.

"if guys don't lose sight of playing for fun."

"People have lost sight of just playing with friends and having a good time."

Perhaps Im missing your point but you said it twice and it made me pause each time. What other reason is there to play besides, ya know, playing the game for fun? Maybe the games are more "structured" vs. backyard/pickup style but I dont think anyone goes into Sunday with the "We have to win tonight...no prisoners". We all want to win but I dont think exhuberantly so. If Saugus was taken seriously people would at least show up on time I would think.

Again, you said it twice so you must have formed this opinion off something. Im curious for an example.

Frendon hasn't posted in 4 days....is he alive?

And blaming Brett was funny but get real, we all share the blame on that.

John said...

Yeah, I was jokingly blaming Brett. As for the "fun" comment I am not saying to not play competitive, and not try to win. But it's the "take my stick and go home" attitude that seems to exist if a person's team loses more then they win in a week. To me, playing itself is what's fun - the more we play the better.

Nick said...

well, you just singled out the other two captains.

John, have you ever went 0-3 in a week and said on the ride home or even the next day..."we didnt win any games but it was fun!"

You either? It doesnt happen.

Mostly because the teams are stacked in your favor :)

Brett said...

Johnny's right with regard to the whole "if it isn't league hockey it's not fun" attitude. We all fall victim to it cause losing is never fun is saugus especially with frendon yelling gamewinna in your face as he just scored his 8th goal of the game off Jimmy. some weeks in Saugus are just lopsided and leave a sour taste. And yes me and Johnny play together too much but please stop crying about it and pick first or just have Jared and JB as the new constant captains.

But Johnny fails to realize that his lack of enthusiasm for this site has had an effect on the passion we all have(had) for Saugus and is just blind to it somehow, even though we all repeatedly complain about it. We all wanted stats out of Johnny's hands(hoping nick would take over or even frendon cause he'd definitely have them up every monday) for a long time and now he ran it into the ground cause he won't update the stats unless he has a good week, and if he doesn't, he always justifies why he couldn't do it even though he could do it from home when Jamies not looking so he doesn't get in trouble. Man up Johnny and stop being so passive about the site(we don't care about your predictions)

Open your eyes Johnny!! If you really want to play in Saugus that bad, start showing it. Send out texts every week to everyone till you get a response from everyone. Invite people who don't usually play. Switch it to Saturday so dale can play. Do something. Texts don't take a whole lot of time to write and read.(this isn't because you blamed me. i actually thought that was funny and it made me proud)

I'm in for every week of Saugus hockey if we play on saturday or sunday, i even have money to pay each week this year.

John said...

Nick, I already said that I absolutely have weeks were I go home frustrated. But that's how things are in sports. I never take the attitude of wanting to quit because ultimately i am playing the most fun sport on the planet with a bunch of friends.

As for keeping the stats up to date I would be very surprised if that had an impact on the site. Since the baby and new job last year it has been more difficult to update them as regular as the past, but ultimately i can make sure they get done (or at least show nick how).

As for text msg, I do text guys in addition to emails and posting on the site. Most guys, even if planning on playing don't get back to me, at least not right away.

Finally, as for the new people I have been working on it, and have some other people who should be showing up. But they might not be there every week, at least at first. So I am hoping that when they start at least once a month it motivates them to want to play more regularly.

Brett said...

you'd be surprised?! Johnny everyweek we complain and you think it has no effect? Everyone else has just given up cause they're sick of complaining. Me and Frendon are the only ones left complaining. Everyone use to complain about the late stats, that's why we all played in Saugus. I know that's why i kept playing when i first started playing with you guys.

What's Lee up to these days?

Mike D said...

JB - I'm in for Dracut

John - There is little chance I'd make it this Sunday after my assembly. I'd be out for next Sunday because I'm away.

Not for nothing, but Saugus hockey definately has a "reputation" as not a clean game.

waranted or not it has it. One day randomly my parents asked me if I played street hockey in Saugus and when I asked why my mother said, "I heard they play really ruff and there are fights and brothers have stopped going"

Then a few weeks ago a brother gave a talk in my hall and he was from Malden. He was actually the brother that played once (the night a few people almost went at it)and he asked how's Saugus boxing going. He only came once and said he'd never go again.

So I think that is what your up against when trying to get new people or even trying to get some of the guys that used to come.

When stuff used to happen at Saugus or people would rip each other on here from the outside it looked bad, but what they don't realize is most of you guys grew up together and it isn't a big deal.

John said...

Brett I'm referring to the fact there were complaints immediately after we were done playing the other night, with people sarcastically congratulating you on winning the stats race for this season. Their complaint that night was their team - it had nothing to do with the stats.

However, by the next time we play I'll have all of the stats updated...maybe even the player cards!

Brett said...

Saugus has definitely become a place for the immature

Brett said...

Johnny i'm reffering to the past year and a half where the stats haven't been updated on time ever. People use to complain when they weren't up by wednesday or thursday, now they just give up and know that their complaints are falling on deaf ears. It doesn't matter anymore i guess, it's past saving and the amount of people who care a bout it is slim. You've admitted to not updating stats when frendon has a good week. The stats aren't something you should use as a form of "power".

I fully believe this site is a huge reason for the decline in Saugus. But Mike is right also. Who wants to go to Saugus and have me and Johnny yelling at them cause they missed a pass? Yelling at Frendon is one thing cause he deserves it, but yelling at other people is just stupid.

I never thought Saugus was dirty. Even Griff was never dirty, just aggressive. I think that's a load of crap from who ever believes it's dirty or rough. It's probably from people who played dirty themselves

Mike D said...

Don't get me wrong I wasn't saying I agree with what has been said

I was just saying that unfortunately that is what has gotten around

John said...

Mike, was that Andrew that you were talking about, or someone else? I'm curious if it was him since someone had just told me he was asking when we were playing again because he wanted to play. He's the only one I can think of that goes out to give talks.

I'm torn on the reputation part. In some cases I think it's absolutely deserved and primarily because of one individual not able to control themselves. That aggravates me big time since that's not how it should get played.

OTOH there are certain people like Danny H who like to exaggerate things because we don't all have a group hug in the middle of the rink after each goal. When people like that like to spout off it bugs me.

But sometimes it's just other circumstances of people we don't see showing up:

Lee - he had some issues he was dealing with outside of hockey.

Mark - Moved to Florida

Matt S - Gets another big injury the day he comes back from his eye injury

Reggie, Ron, Joe A, Mark Stevens, etc - Age

Cliff - meetings

Steve P - got married

Obviously there are plenty of other people, and for some of them hockey just isn't their thing.

Billy the Kid said...

I will not be able to play this Sunday after our Assembly.

However, I am all in playing on Monday in the league. Do we have any details yet? Like what time is our game and so forth. I am looking foward to playing in another league.

As far as Saugus hockey, I enjoy playing. I think its fun and would like to continue. I dont think Saugus is rough at all. The league we just finished was way worse then Saugus ever thought of being. We are playing hockey after all, not badminton. People who complain its too rough are not real hockey players. IMO.

Brett said...

don't be dissing badminton

John said...

So without Billy and Mike this week, what do we do about the Haverhill Cup? Try it next week? We'll be without Jared and Mike W. And then later than that the weather becomes a factor.

Do we try for next Sunday?

Brett said...

Go for the 29th with a rain date or Nov 5th. it'll still be nice out and that'll give everyone enough time to make plans for it. If it doesn't happen by then just call it a lockout year and hopefully we can do it next year.

I vote to have it at the place we did last year. Saugus would be stupid plus we couldn't do 3 on 3. it's too big.

Nick said...

i agree with brett.
