I'll take a short

31 comments:
With the first half of the uneventful 2013-14 season in the books, Big Board has heard the cries cry for an accurate ranking system.

With everyone sliding toward a big pile of mediocrity, it's no wonder we've seen the likes of Nick Burton being drafted number 1 multiple weeks.

10.  MVW- It's pretty much impossible to remember anything that has happened in SNH over the past 3 months, except for Mike playing a hilarious version of street hockey.  He's awful.

9.  Brendon-  What is really disturbing about that embarrassing "we booked the rink until 8:30" comment, is that Brendon would've passed a lie detector test saying that.  What else has he been lying about?  Stats?  Hamstring tears?  Zone defense philosophies?

8.  Griff-  Truly has matured as a person and player as one of the original players in our modern day street hockey adventures in hockey town.  A true pioneer on how to continue being productive on the stat sheet despite lack of interest, skill, and effort.

7.  Brett- Barely qualifies for the minimum games played, but if you combine his stats from Saugus and Acton this year he's a top 5 player.  I actually didn't really check the math on that, starting to think it's not true because he was demoted to defense in Acton, and those Russians are the ones cleaning up on that stat sheet.

6.  Billy-  Has less goals than Cindy this year, but he did lose a tooth, and plays slightly above average defense, and brings some guy with a beard every week.  Good participation this year.

5.  Andrew-  Andrew, Elliot, Nathan, Austin, Cindy, Ignads, have all really played better than the majority of the group here.  Andrew get's the nod for playing some defense and somehow has been able to ignore every piece of awful advice Brendon has given him.

4.  Johnny-  Played good at goalie earlier this year.  And continues to score while restricted to power walking out there.  Still the king, nothings changed.

3.  Jared-  Jared is awesome and likeable and it's been really impressive seeing him take the high road when dangerous people like Borges, Griff, Nathan, Elliot, and many others have attacked him with dangerous play.

2.  JB-  Stats don't lie, and Borges is on track to become only the 3rd person to ever win a scoring title in Saugus.  This could be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and if I were him I would put off any surgeries, vacations, and any other distractions that could interfere with this achievement.

1.  Nick-  So this is what Saugus has become, Nick is the best player out there?!  C'mon people, the defensive defensemen can't be the best.  He only has one move to go up the boards.  Am I the only one who sees this!!!

There you have it, you are all terrible.

You left your lights on!!!

10 comments:

Its become a very sad place around here, have you noticed?  How many times can one person read the phrase “Im in”??? from the same 5 people. It makes me want to shut down the blog. Archive it. Make it a story for the grandkids. Breakout the caution tape. Lock the door and swallow the key. Great reading material 15 years from now. I cant remember the last time a good joke was written on this blog. In fact, the blog has become so sad that the most interesting posts come from a blogger named “Wolverine”. First of all, no one remembers how you got this self imposed nickname. Its, at best, a joke a 4 year old would teehhee at.  Its not funny. It never was funny. Can you go back to posting as “Frendon” in your sad attempt at embracing the (funny) nickname you never wanted but actually have?

Its time for this blog to live up to its name, for this week at least. The recap is back baby!

Game 1

Another game that just wouldn't end. The White team being lead by John Riley and Jared who was left trying to make deals with Nick to stop playing defense on him. “You just let that two on one with Brendon and Cindy go right by you to cover me? Bad defense!” Which to me was ironic because they didnt score and Jared had 4 goals in the first game. Despite an excellent in game in net by Jack the dark team won the game 5-1. Goal Scorers included: Jared (4) and John Riley for the White Team and Nick had the only goal for the Dark Team

Game 2

A shakeup! It became very clear in the first game that the defense lacked a quality outlet to pass to so we moved Nick up to wing in hopes of creating offense. I know what you’re thinking...its never going to work. Oh how it did. Nick, flat out owned a goalie for the first time in his sad hockey career. Scoring 3 goals. A slapshot from the point. A wrist shot from the slot (It was a wrist shot i swear!) and a breakaway goal on a great “flip” pass from JB. Who doesn't enjoy a great flip pass?????  Mike D and JB also scored in route to a 5-2 win.  Frendon scored both White Team’s goals.

Game 3

The Defense for the Dark Team started to feel the ramifications of losing a defenseman who doesn’t sub to offense. (I like to think of it as a defenseman who logs tough minutes). Borges had to sub for ahhhh cool down period, which made Billy unable to sub. With Billy tired a MVW deciding that defense is overrated while playing defense the White Team smoked the Dark Team to a score of 5-2. Goal Scorers: Jared, Brendon (2), John Riley (2), Nick, Mike D.

Game 4

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead with goals by Jared and 2 from John Riley, it looked like Jared was going to have his first winning week...ever. That quickly changed as his team quickly blew that lead as both the “stars sat on the bench”. Two excellent goals by Austin and a goal each from JB and Billy set up a chance for a split of games this week. A goal by JB set up by a great pass from MVW set up the gamewinnahh!!! as JB got to celebrate with his team....Sadly he scrapped his elbow during the celebration.

Interesting Notes:

-Frendon’s “zone defense” (in hockey?? yes in Hockey) failed to work yet again. He is incapable of covering a man at the point...or understanding sarcasm...or making a joke...or..well...a lot of things

-The Praters (and captains this week) managed zero goals this week

-Joe may be the only guy with a higher shot than Nick in the world

-Hi Brett! Im glad he can still hang out with us on the website
-Can we get a Big Board?

-4:25 Game for the Pats...I guess we will see you in a month Griff!
-Mike D grows a beard really fast in a day huh? He is like the Wolf Man. :)
-I hope you took note of the smiley face

-Brad bailed on hockey because”i didnt remind him on Sunday we were playing.” I guess me asking on Saturday was “too soon”

-Reggie bailed out because of:

     a) hammy
     b) gout
     c) blackness
     d) all of the above

-Hopefully this recap was mediocre enough that no one asks me to do it again!! ( kind of like when Frendon plays defense) "I gave up a goal, aw-shucks!!! Can I play wing again??? I want stats that arent accurate!!!!"

Shoot out - Sunday January 5th

Peduto and I were thinking we should work in a shoot out before or after the game on January 5th. I need some good breakaway practice and some of you could work on your stick handling moves.

Points

10 comments:
Quick Update: Let me know who is in this Sunday at 6:00.  I want to book the rink today if we have enough guys.

Obviously inspired by the Patriot's offensive explosion yesterday there were plenty of goals and plenty of points to go around last night.  On paper, the dark team looked to have an advantage which appeared solidified after winning the first game rather easily.  Yet, the White team came back to win the next three games, including the fourth game where they blew a 3-0 lead, fell behind 4-3, and then won 5-4.

When picking up the teams JB had the choice: first pick in straight one-for-one picking scenario, or second pick but choice of goalie.  JB chose the first pick and selected Jared.  After Nick was selected for the White team JB chose Joe to solidify his defense while Billy was chosen for the White team.  The remaining picks had Cindy, Andrew, and Brendon going to the White team with Mike D, Elliot, Brad, and Nathan Cuevas going to the dark.  On paper it looked as thought the dark team had the edge in players while the White team had an edge in net.  In Game 1 it did not play out that way with Mike letting in several soft goals and Rick making some nice saves.  As the night went on though the goaltending edge swung in favor of the White team.  That, plus improved play helped them win the final 3 games.

Notes:

  • Brendon played very well from Game 2 on including some great passing from behind the net leading to a couple of goals.  However, two negatives of note: defensive play in Game 1 and failing two 3-on-1s in Game 4.  The only thing I will say about Game 1 is that if you find that you are not covering anyone when the other team has the ball, you probably blew your defensive assignment.  The thing is, blown coverage happens and I had a couple of them last night that lead to goals.  But, you have to acknowledge where the coverage broke down so that it does not continue happening.  As for the 3-on-1s there is nothing else to be said...overall though, I thought you played very well after Game 1.

  • Joe looked in mid-season form with some head hunting slapshots and some knee slides.

  • Cindy had one of the best shots of the night with her second goal: off the post and in, beating Rick to the glove side.

  • JB and Jared continue to master hockey's version of the Hail Mary.  Brad actually had a beautiful transition pass leading to a Jared goal too...it's too bad that he played all of 3 minutes!

  • Outside of some early turnovers in Game 1 and some lackadaisical play in Game 4 Billy and Nick did great on defense.  Huge factor in the White team's success.

  • No one get too excited yet, but I plan to get all of the stats done this week...yeah, yeah - actions speak louder than words!

Talkin' Trash

32 comments:
After a couple decent weeks in Saugus, players are settling into the 2013-14 season.

Once we get Johnny back out playing, games should be at a competetive high not seen in a couple years.  Here's our first installment of the top ten players off the draft board this year.

Sorry Reggie, only Lee is allowed to pout and leave hockey early.  On we go!

10.  Billy-  Sporting a blue mouthguard that is giving us nightmares of Bradley smiling and sluring words with a gallon of saliva in his mouth, William has played solid and is a nice consolation defensemen after Nick is drafted.

9.  Johnny-  Probably goes up a couple spots if playing out, but Johnny has played well in net this year.  Quite a few highlight reel saves, and has been the difference thus far in wins with the two teams being fairly evenly matched.

8.  Elliot-  The only one out of him, austin, and andrew who doesn't try to catch a pass with just the toe of his stick on the ground.

7.  Brendon-  What warrants a stoppage in play?

A.  Elliot taking a follow thru stick in the face from a Ron Leger Special
B.  Cindy taking a rage fueled slapper on her unprotected shins from Griff
C. Brendon taking a below average snap shot in the lower back from Jared

Obviously we all know the answer, but with that in mind Brendon has still played the best hockey i've seen out of him in 2 or 3 years.  Watch out JB

6.  Griff-  RPG has really taken advantage of the rest of the group getting out of shape.  He's already exhausted after 30 seconds of warmups, but he still shows those flashes of terror out there that remind us why Chris Young quit and Mark moved away.

5.  JB-  Solid start to the season for him.  Still waiting for him and Jared to click, which probably won't happen because Brett and Nick are trying way too hard on defense.

4.  Ron-  Good for Ron still being awesome at street hockey.  When he takes those long slapshots, do you think Jack even sees the ball for a split second?

3.  Jared-  Goals are down, points are there.  Nick has definitely gotten the best of him thru the first couple weeks, which means Jared will just draft him first next week to not deal with him, then lose all 4 games because Nick can't defend Austin and Cindy.

2.  Nick-  I feel like Nick was talked about a lot that last post.  Is this the highest he's ever been on BB?  And is this the biggest discrepency between WPR and BB ever?  If only Nick played good defense against children he would have a shot at #1 this year.

1.  Brett-  Brett's life is looking up these days.  Player Spotlight at hockey8.com (you're welcome for the shout out ron), number one on BB, settlements and Italy trips, and a job make Brett not only the #1 player in saugus, but the #1 person as well.

Weekly Power Rankings

20 comments:
9-22-13

New Season, Same Old Grudge

13 Nick – There’s no hope of you ever leaving this spot before an apology is issued verbally and in written form. Of course if the rankings ever get expanded you could drop below this spot, but the point is, you only have one way of escaping the bottom, and for the weeks where I only do 10 spots, you will not even be mentioned.

12 Mike D – Hope you feel better. See you next week?

11 Austin – Really had no chance to live up to all the hype that was being thrown around about him. He did slightly frustrate Nick, but then again Nick was the worst player according to these rankings so take it for what it’s worth.

10 Reggie – Come on Reggie, we all know you have more to give than that. Remember that backhand shot though? If you don’t Borges can showed you what it looked like. Perhaps the tank-top was cutting off circulation to…everywhere.

9 Cindy – Borges might not allow her to play on his team, but I feel like she’s not the worst you could do for a winger this week. That honor goes to someone whose name begins with an A.

8 Griff - I feel his night was hindered by too many shots taken in warm ups.

7 Jack – Lateral movement will always be a problem for this goalie who’s on the back nine of his career, but nights like this show that he got quite a bit left. We’ll say he’s on the 13th hole.

6 Borges – Didn’t really do much on offense, wasted a lot of energy diving on the back-check which is admirable if it were anywhere other than Saugus, and defense wasn’t much better. Pretty sure he did something good though. Post in the comments if you remember something good he did.

5 Johnny – Johnny had some trouble cracking the top 5 last year if I recall correctly. I expect him to be playing net quite often this year, but I don’t expect him to play this well every week. But hey, you have to do whatever it takes to get into the top 5

4 Jared – His first and only goal came in the highly competitive 4th game of the night. But I didn’t actually see it, so does it still count? Does it Borges?

3 Ron – He’s 63 years young and is quicker and more talented than 100% of the players to ever show up at Saugus (granted he’s never won in tournament play). When’s it going to be time to pass the reigns?

2 Brendon – With the new old points race in full swing, Brendon started it off the right way and scored a couple game winners along the way. And now, with technology advancing every year, lost points are a thing of the past.

1 Brett – I think we all know the real reason WPR came back this week. Safe to say if my favorite player didn’t do so well this week I wouldn’t be here.

Honorable Mention: Billy T – Hope you’re ok. I’m going to keep pestering you for an update on your tooth until you finally give me one just so I can put in my 2 cents of past experiences and suggestions

No stats today

2 comments:
Home sick today so I am not going to be able to get to the stats.  Plus Billy would not likely be able to see them with his face all puffed up.  I will try for tomorrow.

One quick note: NESN is hosting a 24/7 type of program with the Bruins tonight.  It supposedly has footage of some of the free agent / trade discussions that happened over the summer.  Looks like it will be interesting!

The Start of Hockey - Sunday, September 1st

19 comments:
All of the hockey that we thought we would be able to play this summer never really happened, primarily due to not having goalies.  Hopefully, with the unofficial start of fall, we will be able to get a couple of goalies and start the season.

Before we start, what rules do we want?  Do we take an attempt at penalties / power plays?  Do we go with timed games or games to 5?  Icing, offsides stay the same?  Let me know your preferences in the comments.

Also, let me know if you can make the first Sunday.

Hi guys,

It's been weeks since we've played hockey, so who would like to play this Sunday?  Let me know if you prefer inside at Saugus in the evening (6:00 or so) or outside in Lawrence during the afternoon (4:00).  Worst case we can do flag football, but let's shoot for hockey this week.

Crack a Bottle

9 comments:
Another year is in the books as the 2013-13 season came stumbling in to the finish line.

More importantly as we build up to a glorious 2014 tournament event that is sure to disappoint, let's take a way too early snap shot at the top 10 people we want to go.

10.  Billy T- Too bad this won't be Billy D, but hey if nothing else he has put his time in at Saugus to earn himself an invite.

9.  MVW- The 2013-14 season might be the first year we see Mike healthy with some semblence of hockey skill.  This "where's waldo" of the 2008 florida trip surely will play better this time around.  I mean, he just has to, c'mon.

8.  Johnny- Going on a couple years without a hockey trip, Johnny will be looking for one last shot at glory.  Expect lots of needless sunblock and 45 minute showers for Johnny.

7.  Griff- As long as Borges and Jared are playing, Griff will be forced to continue his hockey career another year against his will.  Beachball will provide much needed grit and size to our undersized team, or perhaps things will get really weird and he'll be our goalie, more on that disaster in a bit.

6.  Ron-  Ron has tapped into Dale Avecado's fountain of youth program. http://www.drug-free-natural-health.com/.  That was very time consuming to find.  Back on subject, Ron appears remotivated to play street hockey and has atleast one great tourney left in him.

5. Scott-  I know I know, no one thinks he'll go.  But a beach road trip is right up his alley, we just need to keep the actual playing hockey part of the vacation on the down low.  Who am I kidding? Scott's not playing.

4.  Nick- Just realized how terrible our team is with Nick most likely being one of our best players.  He just really needs to follow our strict curfew we will set out for him.

3. Borges-  This is a tough one to predict.  JB keeps claiming a knee surgery is imminent, which we all know isn't going to happen, but still we need that ball of cartilidge to hold up his leg one more year.  He does have a mini-van for the trip, with automatic sliding doors.  More on that as well.

2. Jared-  After winning the points race this year, how can one expect him to be motivated for a measly hockey trip?  He also bought a gigantic mini-van for the sole purpose to go on this trip, so that's gotta mean something.  That was the follow up point to JB's mini-van.

1. Brett- I can't wait until we don't have a goalie and Brett has to jump in net for the team.  That probably gives Reggie a chance to make the roster tho.  And using Brendon's math skills, there's only a 12% chance Brett has another great tourney because he just had one in montreal and next years trip will still fall under the "3 year sample probability hockey trip" equation.

Okay more importantly here are the % of who will be our goalie for this year.

Brett- 70%.  The only "good" option we will probably have, and he's probably not even that good anymore since he recklessly dove at Jared's knee. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2LPa1O4A-Zo.

Griff- 15% He has a year to get good, which i give a 15 % chance.  Once he finds out goaltending is more tiring than playing i'm sure he'll lose interest in the challenge

Joe- 7 , 8% He'll say he's 100% in tho for what that's worth

Tony- 5% This is getting scary

Darrin- 1% Could you imagine?  I can't.

Dave- 0% Not sure why I put his name on here

Someone from Acton- 1 %. I don't know anyones name over there but maybe brett can make some new friends and ron can use his charm to pursuade someone.

No Hockey in Saugus Sunday

17 comments:
The rink is closed on Sunday but we could always play in Lawrence if everyone wanted to. Depending on the weather. We have 2 goalies: Darrin and Tony. And 9 players: John, Jared, Borges, Griff, Nick, Eric, Brett, Reggie, Mike W. I'll make sure Griff's team gets the extra sub. The extra sub means everything to him. And of course stats would have to count.

Palin, Silverman, or Savage?

21 comments:

Do you know what the hardest thing to do in Saugus is? Beating Tony in net? Beating Nick on defense? Shutting a Riley down in the slot? Getting mad at a inadvertent Frendon whistle? Nope. Nope. Nope.

Nope.

It’s Picking Teams. Its a hassle. Its a nightmare. Its the worst. There is no one that wants to do it. There is no one that is comfortable with it. There is no one capable of picking fair teams. I say we just throw sticks. Its more fun (funner) and frankly we are probably better off. “Captains” cant seem to get it right anyways.

The only time it works out is if you’re picking teams with MVW. Thats when it becomes a good time, right Griff?

So on we go! Another week of Saugus is in the books. Some said it was the last week until the Fall but that only seems to be the case for Jared...is the scoring title now within reach? Im sure I could get there if I wasn’t so good at messing  up “high probability scoring chances”.

Game 1: Does anyone have any nice pens I can destroy for no reason whatsoever?

Awful Game to be on the losing end of. Did you hear how horrible Nick was? Did you know the reason the dark team lost 5-0 was because Nick decided to do his best Mike D impression all night? Which, as you can imagine, was not a good thing because the dark team also had Mike D on their team. On a 3 on 2 (though why let the facts get in the way of good story? Lets just say it was a 1 on 1 battle just because its better for the narrative) So the story goes like this: Everyone was out of the play, 1 on 1 battle. Cindy got the ball, by chance, and started streaking toward the infallible Tony. Nick, upon seeing this, began to panic. He managed to be deked around not once but twice, fell down into Tony, taking him completely out the play giving Cindy the easy tap in. Wow. Burned by a Riley (and it wasn't even Johnny but that doesn't seem surprising, did he even play?). I should have turned my stick in at that moment. A Frendon led White Team steamrolled their way to 5-0 victory.

Game 2:  Survival Rope

The White Team continued its dominance in Game 2 taking a 4-0 lead. It was going to be another shellacking. But after an unprecedented “break” after the fourth goal Jared and Borges decided to demote themselves to defense. Nick moved to center, MVW and Reggie were on the left and right wings. With a Selke like presence and a complete domination of the face-off circle from center the Dark teams offense finally started to click. 3 goals in a row. A 4-3 game. But all hopes of a comeback where slashed by Ron picking a corner on Tony. 5-3 Final.

Game 3: Are we allowed to shut the AC off???

This was the most boring 5-4 game ever. The most memorable part of this game was a streaking winger crashing (guess who, its kind of a theme) into Jack causing a huge collision, two contusions and a broken stick. The White team managed another uneventful 5-4 win.

Game 4: Its a cloth that cleans my phone.

This really was the best game of the night because the dark team avoided a disastrous Saugus hockey sweep. A week on your stat line that takes weeks to make right. The game was a 5-4 final but it didn’t end without some controversy. With the game tied at 4 Frendon made an attempt to get the ball out of the zone but he was tripped by Nick. Knowing full well that you have to call yourself on penalties and understanding what my intent was on the play, it was decided that no call would be made. I mean, would it have been called in OT in the NHL playoffs? The ball was dumped back into zone while frendon cried for the tripping call. After some cycling the ball squeaked its way to Jared who missed a wide open shot but  was quickly given a second shot by JB for the game winner.

Never Playing Again. Ever

10 Nick (-7) – PhweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BBBBBBBOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9 Billy T (E) – Played decent. Actually I thought he played really good in game 1 with Griff on the other side. The rest of the night was ok. Stays at 9 just due to new players showing up……..and being a whole lot better than him.

8 Johnny (E) – Johnny crabbed about missing weeks of easy stats and then, when he gets the chance to shoot on Tony in rare form, he squanders it. Even while stat grubbing(shame on you for sinking to Brendon’s level). Did you see that acceleration though? When JB didn’t catch him at the blue line I knew he never would.

7 Brendon (-2) – Vintage Brendon tonight. Dropping on the rankings is also vintage Brendon.

6 Ron – Maybe could have even been higher this week if he didn’t blow game 4 by being a puck hog and trying to impress us all with his age defying puck handling. Your moustache is impressive enough.

5 Mike W (+2) – Is there some workout or stretching routine to make someone’s right arm 3 feet longer?

4 Jared (+2) – Good rebound week. Unfortunately Jared’s word is his bond (bang-a-rang) and he won’t be showing his face in Saugus for the rest of the year. All this while so close to that coveted scoring title.

3 Griff (+1) – Jared’s archenemy. Brendon thinks he can get under Jared’s skin? He’s not even close to Griff’s level. But the thing I love about Griff is that he knows when to take a little something off his shot to make sure he gets it on net.

2 Borges (E) – Sick of seeing his defense get torched over and over again, JB hopped back on defense, with Jared, and turned the tide of game 4.

1 Brett (E) – Brett’s winning percentage was way too low. Saugus has a way of making everything right in time.

Honorable Mention: Jack “The Brick Wall” Riley – He’s gotta be the oldest goalie to record a shutout. Brendon can you update the records page when you get the chance?

Newcomers: Ron

Chicken Caesar Salad

10 Andrew – Same stats on the night as Jared. Is that a compliment for Andrew or an insult to Jared?

9 Billy T – First time in net was a memorable one. He was better than Johnny though. Remember when people thought Johnny was a decent goalie? Good times.

8 Johnny (-1) – 27.4% Guess what this number represents. And mind you, this includes the shutout.

7 Mike W (+2) – Johnny still doesn’t know how Mike scored on him. The answer lies above.

6 Jared (-5) – WOW! Just wow! Not only does Jared pick terrible teams himself, he also gets picked onto terrible teams. An inspiring effort in game 1 quickly faded to embarrassment, comical mischief and the inability to get by Nick for the breakaway even though Nick didn’t hold him. And to top it off, I hear he wasn’t responding to numerous efforts to get in touch with him through text messaging. How’s Scott doing by the way?

5 Brendon (+5) – If you’re looking for someone to dissect the other team and locate their weaknesses, Brendon’s your guy. Did you see the way he was able to score that wrap around goal, knowing that Billy didn’t possess the necessary lateral movement to make the stop? Or the way he again shot on a 3 on 1 like he did last week? He wasn’t trying to stat grub at all. He just knew it was the right play against the right goalie at the right time. Maybe next time you can share your insider information with your teammates so they can take advantage of what you see as well.

4 Griff (+1) – You can only hope to get the Griff we got last night every week. Not many people can throw their stick 3 times in one play and not get a penalty. At least he was accepting of the teams. After all they did have the sub.

3 Nick (+1) – Hitting the net with consistency. A problem that had plagued Nick for years is finally behind him. Who needs a wrist shot when you can pick incredible teams? All I know is that he’s never getting laid.

2 Borges (+1) – Don’t count this guy out of the scoring race. I think he’s finally realized what a waste of time playing defense is.

1 Brett (+1) – The coveted spot that few others have had the honor of gracing. Brett finally took over the top spot from Jared and he could have it for a while. But I doubt it.

Honorable Mention: Mike D – That is a thick beard we’re all very very jealous of.

Newcomers: Andrew, Billy T

Drop Offs: Ron, Reggie – WPR is getting less and less compassionate for those that miss weeks.

Stare down

10 Brendon (E) – It use to be that Brendon was the only one to celebrate like a fool by himself after a goal with his legendary “Gamewinner” cry. Those moments are happening very few and far in between these days.

9 Mike W (E) – One of these days he’s gonna harness that speed and make it useful. I think he runs fast at the wrong times.

8 Reggie (E) – I didn’t mind Reggie on defense last night actually. He did better than anyone else who played back there except Nick. The giveaways need to be reduced, but who doesn’t have a couple of those every now and then. There’s no panic in his game, he just makes the rest of his team panic.

7 Johnny (-1) – Poor Johnny. I heard he went out for drinks after. Cool. I’m guessing the baby is coming soon and that could actually mean Johnny dropping off the Rankings if he misses two weeks.

6 Ron (+1) – I love how defenseman back off Ron like it’s his blazing speed they have to respect. Just a little heads up, the scouting report on Ron has been out for, oh I don’t know, a couple decades now and surprisingly he likes to shoot. He also loves picking corners on open nets with 100MPH slapshots.

5 Griff (-1) – Played ok.

4 Nick (+1) – Played ok. Flip flopped Nick and Griff just because there was too little movement this week.

3 Borges (E) – 3 unassisted goals on the night and a goal for the ages where he undressed and outworked Jared and whipped a shot on net that went by a less than spectacular Darrin. Something to really be proud of Borges. Puff that chest out a little more.

2 Brett (E) – What more can I say about this kid? Jared and he combined for 17 points, while the rest of the team combined for 2. Brett’s just hoping Jared and Johnny’s wives have their baby’s at the same time. Just close your eyes and imagine the roster when those two are out.

1 Jared (E) – Has a pretty solid grip on the scoring title.

Honorable Mention: It worth mentioning that Darrin didn't make the Rankings even though he played. Be ashamed Darrin.

The Return of the Timely Recap

10 comments:
They said it would never be back. Our beloved and glorified stat based game of exhaustion was all but a distant memory.

The stats set in stone. Never to be added to. Records never to be broken. John Riley forever our Colossus of Clout (The Colossus of Clout).

Some said we’d never play again.

Some said they wouldn’t play again. (he did)

Empty Cries for hockey’s return were mostly scoffed at.

Saugus hockey was officially dead.

But with a stroke of a pen and 46 cents Saugus is back upon us and its back big!

Team Breakdown:

Goalies:
Johnny vs. Tony

Wingers:
Jared, Borges, Ward v.s Brett, Ron, Frendon

Defense:

Griff, Billy T vs. Nick, Reggie

Sibling Rivalry:
Andrew vs. Elliot

Game 1:

This game was by far the best game of the night. It was everything you could ask for in a game. In came down to the final seconds. Records were broken. There were some great saves. I didn’t get embarrassed on any play. And thank goodness for that or I would have tackled someone Im sure. The final was 6-5 with Brett getting a point on every goal that was scored. Thats how a first round pick performs! The game was back forth until the last 5 mins when the dark team put the game away with two goals. The game ended with ball dangling in the net.

Game 2:

The story of this game was of who didnt show up rather than who did. The only good that came from this game is that Nick didn’t tackle anyone. Otherwise this game was an utter disaster for the dark team (udder? Its kind like roomer and rumor, right?). Reggie’s game one magic on d was gone as fast as it came after getting burned by Andrew. Nick slowed down big time, with a lazy effort at best. Frendon couldn’t get the ball over the center line. Brett and Ron disappeared. The recipe for a dominating effort by the White team. A weak goal allowed by Tony capped off a 6-0 White Team win with 14 minutes still left on the clock.

Game 3:

It came down to this for the series. Unlike the first two games this was a defensive battle. Both teams were tired and goals were definitely difficult to “muster”. After matching goals to start the game the dark team (and Brett..stats!) was given a gift wrapped goal despite the shot being filthy. A 100 footer found a seam past Griff’s face and Johnny’s pads to hit twine for a 2-1 dark team lead. The dark team was able to add one more goal to clinch a victory and the series. However, the game may be in protest after Nick nearly killed Mike Ward. Did anyone ask Nick what his motives were?

"Im trying to create some space!'

"should I leave the corner of the rink, now? now? how about now?"

Mercy!

10 Brendon – Still doesn’t have the basic instincts you’d hope to see from a veteran hockey player, like not standing still in the corner on a two one 1, or not shooting it from the blue line on a 3 on 1, but his game last night was nowhere near his worst.

9 Mike W (E) – Those feet just never stop moving, but he still remains one of the most overrated defensemen in Saugus and we don’t even rate him that high to begin with.

8 Reggie (E) – Playing defense might not be his thing judging from what I observed last night, especially in game 2. But offense definitely isn’t his thing. So that leaves goalie.

7 Ron (+3) – Started off hot and then fizzled out but only in the scoring department, his play was solid throughout the night. He was setting Brett up in the slot quite a bit too. Maybe the Haverhill Cup sparked something between those two.

6 Johnny (+1) – Better than last week as he robbed Brendon many times during the night. And a shutout is a shutout. His only goal was to not drop any further on WPR and he succeeded. Isn’t that everyone’s goal each week?

5 Nick (-1) – I’m so glad I don’t ever have to go against Nick and his 14’ wingspan. But good news is that now you have people talking about PP opportunities. If I had a vote in the matter (and I do) PP opportunities would be awesome. Think of the possible stats! I’m guessing Brendon would have the worst PK % and Jared would have the most shorthanded goals. Nick drops a spot due to game #2.

4 Griff (+1) – Played uninspired until Nick mauled Mike W, but by then there was only 3 minutes left in the night. And then he maliciously tripped Brett to end the night. Something like that should never go unpunished. Can you imagine what the Dark team would have done with a 6 second PP?

3 Borges (E) – 3 goals but all in the first game. He should have never shown Brett that you can score off Johnny with a slow shot from 90’ away.

2 Brett (E) – New records are great and I love records and all (maybe it is the stick), but game 2 really tainted what was otherwise a good night for the whole Dark team. So Brett stays in 2nd.

1 Jared (E) – 24 points in 2 weeks isn’t a bad average. In game one, him and Borges looked like they were back playing in Dracut….. you know, because they scored a lot but still lost.

Honorable Mention: Elliot – Played a total of 149 seconds and made a bigger impact than his brother

Newcomers: Brendon

Drop-offs: None

Stinkin’ Joe

10 Ron (-2) – Don’t expect to see him again anytime soon.

9 Mike W (-3) – Baby. Congrats! Not enough to keep you from dropping though. It’s been a week you should’ve been there tonight.

8 Reggie – It’s a shame we didn’t have a good group for Reginald. But it was nice to see him and he didn’t completely embarrass himself while showing flashes of averageness.

7 Johnny (-2) – Why does he own goalie pads? You’d think he had never played goalie before. He’d make a diving save and then give up a slow 90 foot slap shot. I don’t care if it was dipping or curving. It’s was going 27 MPH(Brendon clocked it). Anyone with a shred of hand eye or reflexes or maybe a tiny bit of both should’ve stopped it. I’m sure everyone appreciated the fact that you played goalie though. Is that the first time a goalie has scored on another goalie?

6 Miscalculated – It’s either an empty 10th place or empty 6th place. Who cares really?

5 Griff (+2) – Definitely makes those going against him question their own safety. But I say don’t make him mad. Easy solution.

4 Nick (E) – Status quo for Nick. A tough night for a defensive defensemen to shine, and sure enough, he didn’t. Just joking. 2 Goals and 5 assists is nothing to joke about.

3 Borges(E) – Very impressed with his willingness to play net with no cup or chest protector or glove or blocker(did I miss anything). Oh yeah no goalie stick but that was to his advantage as he out produced Brad and was a greater threat than Brendon.

2 Brett (E) – Big big night for Brett, 14 points is no record other than a personal one. His ability to fight through a face full of Nick’s glove was impressive. But Nick apologized after which makes it all better right? Almost like it never happened.

1 Jared (E) – Setting records at a record pace. Jared’s 12 goals in one night will stand the test of time. That is until next week when we’re forced to play 2 on 2 with one goalie. Hopefully Johnny will play net again.

Honorable Mention: No one at all

"Glad He’s Not On My Team"

10 Darrin (-3) – Let’s just say I’ve seen the other goalies for the Haverhill cup…..and Darrin should’ve been first overall.

9 Billy T – That pass. Never to be repeated.

8 Ron (-3) – In all seriousness though, Ron is a great passer.

7 Griff – I hope he’s good at moving players in front of the net. Gonna be tough with a bad toe.

6 Mike W – Made up for the absence of Ron. Almost a “Ron-like” debut on the rankings. Meteoric you might say. But could you imagine how many goals Ron would’ve had tonight?

5 Johnny (-2) – This is one of those games you just throw the tape away. He made his one face-off win really count for something.

4 Nick (+2) – Decent game. Hitting the net with consistency this year. His game has found a new level.

3 Borges (+1) – Kinda gave up towards the end of the night. I wish I knew what it felt like to score whenever you want to.

2 Brett (-1) - Assists

1 Jared (+1) – Goals > Assist = 1st. Simple math. Unfortunately Jared is terrible at math.

Re-Draft

On the day Billy “the lesser Driscoll” dropped out of the tournament, the GMs of each team scrambled to put their heads together and re-draft the same day. Filling the void on the roster left by Billy D was Scott Finalyson. Orders were re-picked randomly by Ashley Borges and it went like this.

Jared

Johnny

Brett

Borges

And with the first pick in the draft Jared picked Scotty F. And so here are the teams for the 2013 Haverhill Cup……(until Scotty drops out too)

Jared – Scott – Mike W – Brian – Bobby

John – Eric – Billy T – Elliot – Jack

Brett – Ron – Griff – Andrew – Tony

Borges – Nick – Mike D – Brendon – Darrin

Enjoy this rare treat from the desk of PPP
Another week of Saugus hockey in the books and after a quick review of the tape, it looks like everyone had a good time. Looking over the rosters it looked like JB picked the winning team even before the ball dropped. After it was all said and done JB's team won the first 3 games, each of them decided by a goal or two. There was a 4th game that went for 20 minutes, and team Johnny saved face, winning the finale 2-0.

The middle game was the closest of the night, needing overtime to decide the victor. There was some contentious moments, in overtime, when Johnny kept digging for the ball, eventually getting it to cross the line. However, since Johnny was the only one celebrating, it went to the replay booth. The goal was disallowed as Bobby had it covered up for a couple seconds before Johnny dug it out.

There were a couple high sticks thrown around tonight. JB was working Billy over for position and JB's stick caught Billy in the head. Fortunately, Billy was only hit in the face and not in any sensitive areas. Billy shook it off and played through it. Way to go Billy. Then, during the very next shift there seemed to be some retaliation when Brett took on JB for possession of the ball. Brett's stick deflected off JB for another high stick to JB's upper body. However, after the play was over it became clear that it was not retaliation and completely unintentional.

The 1st star of the game was Jared. He had a workmen like night and that's all it takes for him to shine brightly in Saugus. However, he's the #1 star for scoring the overtime winner in game 2. Nice shot Jared, off the post too gets you bonus points.

The 2nd star was Ron, the old dog is proving to still have a few tricks up the sleeve. Did he have a bone to settle with being labelled as a "can't pass player" by WPR last week? Maybe, but either way it's going to be interesting to see just what WPR has to say in his report this week. I'm sure he'll have a surprise in store for us.

The 3rd star is JB. His steady hand on D kept his team confident. When he transitioned to play power forward, he made great plays in the passing game as well as being able to bury the shot when his team needed it. Whether on D or playing forward, JB is always a threat to make a deciding play.

The white team had two players worth mentioning. Johnny played a solid game, scoring goals and hustling for loose balls. Johnny kept playing hard, fighting to keep his team in contention all night. He effectively used an extra curricular wrestling move after a play stopped hoping to fire up his team. Kudos to Johnny, you get the the 4th star, but unfortunately you don't get to come out and wave to the crowd.

Jacque also was a bright spot for Johnny's team. He showed off a terrific wrist shot that found the back of the net. Despite fading a little towards the end of the night, he was able to move pretty quickly with the ball showing some good stick handling ability. Jacque takes the 5th star.

But where oh where was Brett and Eric tonight? Eric scored some goals, and Brett might of had 1 or two, but for this dynamic duo much more was expected. They failed to deliver the goods tonight. Was it just an off night? Perhaps, but you have to wonder if the Brett and Eric team are still the odds on favorites to win the Haverhill cup on April 6. After tonight's performance, the odd's makers in Vegas are probably going to rethink the numbers. There's no doubt the other team captains took notes tonight.

BREAKING NEWS!

28 comments:
Big Board has just learned that there has been a major trade accepted for the upcoming Haverhill Cup.

General Managers Jared and Johnny were back and forth all day tweaking the trade and it has just been finalized.

Jared has traded Billy Driscoll, Mike Demaio, and Hunky Tony to Johnny for Darrin Driscoll, Ryan Griffin, and Andrew Mcteenager.

Big Board was the first to report this news.

The Insider's Game Report

13 comments:
Sorry that I can't bring myself to post my Insider's Report as a comment of WPR's thread.

WPR's rankings clearly play favorites. Last night's #1 player was Johnny without a doubt. If he had 7 goals it looked like he scored them on 9 or 10 shots. He's the undisputed scoring champ in Saugus and easily overshadowed Brett's night. I don't know exactly how Johnny does it, but he's deadly when he's in the slot with the ball. Nice job Johnny.

WPR used that final goal as the reason to put Brett number one. The player that should of got credit for that play was Ron. It was a perfect pass- tape to tape. But I was very disappointed that Ron didn't look before he made that play. However, all night Ron worked hard on the boards against the iron of Team Johnny, so I think fatigue was a contributing factor on that ill-advised play. I will say on that goal, Brett gets extra points for scoring a pretty nice game winner.

In looking at the evening as a whole, it was obvious the Borges, Jared & Ron line had their way against the Johnny, Brett and whatever player you put opposite Ron line. There was one stretch where team Borges dominated so much Borges was heard saying, "this isn't fair to the other team, I have to break up our line" and proceeded to put Jared on another line for a good stretch of the night. That was a noble gesture on Borges part and the 2nd line appreciated it, but that is only half the story... read on.

What was even more laughable was when the combination of Brett and Johnny kept taking extra long shifts so that they could get their + - back to respectable. It worked, they scored most of their goals against the second line (or should I say 3rd/4th line players). Their embarrassing strategy didn't go unnoticed. Players on Team Borges asked the captain to counter, doing the same thing to them, however Borges made a firm stand and said, "no we are not sinking to that level, let the kids learn from this and understand this is not how we roll". The young ones jaws all dropped in amazement at Borges wise words. Both Jarad and Ron nodded with approval, then turned back to the game with their heads held high.

Note: The missed icing calls are tough ones, especially when the ensuing play is a quick goal. I think the easy solution is this. If a team ices the puck 3 times in any game, that 3rd time is a penalty shot. This way, every icing call will be contested because your only allowed 2 of them before penalty shots are awarded.

Shameful

10 Billy T – Flashes of Borges with the long passes over everyone. Too bad Brett couldn’t finish like Jared can. Billy sobered up by game 2 and got it together.

9 Ward (-2) – Seems to want to just get one incredible goal per week. No penalty for excessive celebration. Well deserved.

8 Nick (+1) – A tall order for Nick tonight trying to contain a line of Ron, Borges and Jared. But he did quite well and kept his chin up even when Billy forgot how to play D in game one. Nick didn’t even think about blaming Billy T for his poor plus/minus rating.

7 Elliot (+1) – A solid second-liner with a nose for the net. Needs to be faster when he has the ball though.

6 Brendon (E) – Played hard all night and even took a wicked cross-check to the midsection from Jared that he moaned about for oh I don’t know a good 20 seconds. But in good ol’ Brendon fashion was ready to keep playing until he was called off for embarrassing himself and the team.

5 Borges (-1) – Underwhelming performance from JB. Had some very good back-checks to prevent some goals. I think he seems to score more than he does because he celebrates so much after every goal.

4 Darrin (-1) – “On call” my butt.

3 Johnny (+1) – Lit up Bobby with 7 goals. After tonight, both Borges and Brett should be worried about their net minders for the upcoming hockey get-together.

2 Jared (-1) – Incessant complaining and over the top angry sarcasm really wore on both teams. Way to overreact to every little thing that happens that you don’t like. Shameful isn’t what you and Borges claim to be monster shifts from Brett and Johnny. Shameful is the unnecessary bickering and the inability to let things go. Of course Jared probably had a hidden agenda for all his whining, it remains to be seen if it worked though. We’ll find out next week (if it worked it could skyrocket him back to first automatically). But for now all he did was act like a baby whose team never does anything wrong and cost himself the #1 spot.

1 Brett (+1) – Maybe he didn’t score as much as he should have with all those chances but he sure scored the biggest and timeliest goal of the night (unlike someone else who couldn’t beat the buzzer). And mostly got this spot just to spite Cry Baby Jared. Yes, I know that used to be Brett’s nickname.

Honorable Mention: Joe – Was the best defenseman for the White team and while he didn’t turn any heads with his play, he did a lot of the small things well.

Draft Day!!

45 comments:
What a whirlwind of excitement tonight. The much anticipated 2013 Haverhill Cup draft did not disappoint. Names were picked randomly out of a hat by Ashley and the first pick of the draft went to Borges. The second went to Jared. The third to Johnny. The Fourth to Brett.

With the first pick in the draft Jon Borges selected.....Ron Leger from the Acton hockey group!! And the surprise picks kept occurring all night. Here's a list of how each player was picked.

Borges: Ron.
Jared: Billy D.
John: Darrin.
