Haverhill Cup W.P.R.

3-29-14

The Haverhill Cup

20 Nathan - I blame it on the short notice that he was being called up to the big leagues. Those bus rides can take their toll on you, but I don’t think Nick was expecting too much from him. Nathan’s biggest contribution was off the ice capturing footage.

19 Brendon - A promising start to the day quickly turned downhill. He was playing hard and forechecking and being a pest, but just wasn’t able to generate anything offensively which this team needed big time. And that line change…..oh that line change!

18 Jack - For 2 years in a row, Jack played good in the season and a lot less good in the playoffs. But what really hurt Jack was the fact he had no defense what so ever. And we all know what wins games in the Haverhill Cup playoffs.

17 Reggie - Frequently lost his man in coverage during the day, but I don’t think any of us will forget that incredibly skilled goal he scored in the first game of the day that gave Borges false hope.

16 Elliot - Didn’t have a set roll on his team of exclusively offensive players. He was made to play in a position he was unaccustomed to and it showed.

15 Andrew – Will have bragging rights this year as to who the better Prater was. Barely.

14 Autotrader.com - I assume that’s how he wants his name to appear on the cup? Ignats (or Ignads?) shootout winner was a highlight of the tournament and he buckled down his defense in the playoffs while simplifying his game and reducing the mistakes he made.

13 Tony – Wasn’t overly impressive in any game and during the season he was nearly a disaster. But in the finals he made 2 or 3 needed saves verse a very tired opponent as his teammates in front of him did most of the work.

12 Billy T – Played the roll of Mike Ward this year in that I don’t remember anything he did, which is good in the sense that he didn’t do anything egregious, but he didn’t do anything outstanding either.

11 Bobby – Bobby makes himself look big in the net and while not overly quick he makes sure he’s in the right position.

10 Ron – The shot just wasn’t there this year. Not as much as he would've liked it to be. When you’re main attribute is shooting and you’re trying to shoot through puddles, your effectiveness can drop severely.

9 Johnny – Johnny if you want more kids tell Jamie, don’t just draft as many as you can for Haverhill Cup. Even after Johnny realized his team had 0 defense, he still refused to get back and help out and play that defensive center roll like he did in Florida year 1.

8 Griff – Seemed to be in “Griff Mode” the whole round 1 with his most impressive play coming in the tying goal late in game 3, keeping the ball alive in the crease for Reggie to bury. But he just couldn’t put the ball in the correct ocean in the Finals. That’s 3 Final’s appearances and 0 wins. That’s gotta be getting in his head.

7 Eric – While his best stuff was not on display in the playoffs, Eric was still scoring at a good pace and was the only one on his team who didn’t stop running so they could net hang. Maybe he just ran out of Amp energy drinks.

6 Demaio – What Demaio did was impressive on a team that had no right doing what it did. I’m guessing Mike scored 80% of his team’s goals. This seems like a ridiculously high percentage until you see that his team only scored 5 goals.

5 Darrin – Did all he could to help his team reach the finals but fell just short. A lot of Darrin’s saves will go unheralded due to the fact that they couldn’t make it out of round 1 and as a team looked doomed during the season. But you can hold your head high knowing that your team did 68% of the work to give Jared’s team the Cup.

4 Borges – His team suffered from him missing the net way more than he hit it. And not subbing all day really cost him in the finals. Your no Nick Borges. The good thing is that the Haverhill Cup off-season is 364 days so get that knee fixed and ready for next year.

3 Jared – What a scummy thing to do to Bobby! “I got it”. There will be a petition for a sportsmanship rule next year for sure. It’ll be called the J-Rod rule. At the very least, it cost you a ranking. Otherwise you stepped up your game big time and stopped turning it over Jack Belan style like you were during the season.

2 Nick – Otherworldly play from Nick once the playoffs started. Now he can add, “what a goal” to his list of memorable plays along with, “what a pass”. Certainly proved he was worth the #1 pick in the first draft. Maybe Johnny was on to something after all. No other player risked his body more for a chance at the Cup.

1 Mike W – No other player risked his life more than Mike. Mike was relentless every second he was out there and proved Jared to be the mastermind that he is to acquire him. Ward can join the ranks of Billy Thomas and Scott Finlayson as Haverhill Cup MVP. Him and Jared have become like Gretzky and Messier. Dynasty anyone? Congratulations to Mike, Jared, Ron, Ignats and Tony.

Anyone else having trouble walking today?

Good stuff, once we switched Ron back to defense our team finally pulled it together. We gave up 10 goals in the first 2 games and only 5 in the last 4 I think.

Do we get Haverhill cup stats and video today?

my team exceeded all expectations. Especially after the 5-0 loss with Frendon complaining about a torn hamstring and nathan complaining about shin splints. We had a perpetual 3-2 all day and were shootout goal away from the finals. Impressive. The muck it up on defense worked very well. The elements helped too i think.

I thought Mike and Darrin gave it their all and played fantastic.

Oh and by my count we scored 7 goals! Lol

It was tough to overcome Jared's unsportsmanlike conduct, Ron's mustache, mike's recklessly throwing his body into anything and of course ignad's preventing anyone to make a quick change.
Congrats to team auto trader!

Kudos to Jared for pulling off a trade that some people thought defied logic, especially after the first two games. TPJ was hearing some interesting comments from all over, after his team was exposed on D and only managed to score 3 or so goals.

What I want to know is did Jared know he trading for a 1. a shoot out specialist and 2. a cup MVP in MVW?

When things were not looking good for team Jared, he brought the team together and laid out the strategy. In a nutshell, here it was...

Ignads was asked to focus on locking up with anyone infront of our goal, and when in the offensive zone, get in front of their net. Little did we know that Jared was going to pin a crucial moment in the tournament on the stick of Iggy... yup that gaming winning shoot out try. Wow, what a great goal Iggy! A real natural. That was a sweet moment for sure.

Ron was asked to anchor the D and shoot the ball at will. And ya pretty much failed at the shoot and score, aside from 3 goals I that I can remember. But the team strategy was for me to move the ball safely out of our zone, which happened most of the time, but not always (Thx Tony for saving me when I failed to clear). When I was given space I was told to get the ball around the net, and then let Jared and Ward go to work.

MVW was told to leave it all out on the court. Hold nothing back of himself. I'd say Mike did just that. He was was the trigger that sparked our winning streak in the playoffs. You can't underestimate what that does for a team when someone is running around with reckless abandonment, Mike was perfect for that roll.

Jared said he would do what he does best, provide some grit in the corners and of course lead the team in scoring. Jared wasn't about to let his team down and came through in the clutch on several occasions. Jared was the teams catalyst all the way from the first game to the last.

I think overall it was a great team effort. Once we started playing to our strengths and added a little team chemistry (having that beer after game 2 or 3) we liked our chances heading into the playoffs.

Aside from the rain, puddles and a lil' snow bank it was a good time.

WPR is blind!!! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Lost my man most of the day!!??
I admit i was gassed the last two games and did have griff urging me to play better D as only he can. I think i was second to JB scoring.. had 5 goals by my count and 3 assists..

lame...lol.
i call on my captain to defend me.
I demand a new WPR. If we can redraft like ten times then we can rerank!!

Ron may not have scored a ton but he was moved back to defense, which he played great (5 goals against in last 4 games).

Ron I would expect another nice write up on hockey8, we must spread the word of our victory!

I want video and stats...where's brendon?

Ya Reg I agree with you. WPR didn't put the usual time and effort into his ranking algorithm for this years Haverhill Cup. He's probably starting to lean on Brett too much or something. Or maybe it's not that at all, he might just need a new pair of glasses.

He mentioned that Defense wins championships in one of the first or second of his rankings, but when it came to rank my performance he just highlighted my shortcomings of the day. Not a single word about what it was that put our team on the championship course... it was defense first.

Whatever, I'll cut WPR a little slack, one of his favorite players bailed out due to injury and that in itself probably made him a lil less interested this year.

That being said, I would of loved to of seen Brett's last drafted team against Jared's team with Nick. My jelly beans would of all went on Jared's team for the championship win.

So Jared has set himself up to go for the Three-peat next year. It's sure to be an epic event.

Brett said...

Wpr never said defense wins championships. Read it again. All he said was "we all know what wins championships in the haverhill cup". That could mean anything. I would say a little defense and alot of offense wins.

There's been talk of a fall haverhill cup. I wouldn't mind playing because they're fun, but do we want this turning into the 7 winter classics the nhl has. Its surprisingly hard to get people to want to play even though everyone says they love it yet no one is willing to adjust their 1 weekend a month to make it. We need to build a bigger reserve roster before we have 2 a year. There just isnt as many losers dedicated to street hockey like us as you think.

The hockey8.com recap is up over on my site.

Of course there is alot more background info to fill in the gaps for the hockey8 audience.

And of course it chronicles our teams win, so ya it's a little
biased. But I added a prop or two in there for those I thought played above expectations.

Ron said...

of course the prestigious hockey8.com website is loved by Google and the Haverhill Cup Recap is already indexed in the 1 spot... only took 1 or 2 minutes for Google to send a spider and index the post.

Please enjoy responsibly!
